Hagale Family Arabians | Region 12 by HOPE ELLIS-ASHBURN
CoverStory
The level of excitement at Hagale Family Arabians had already reached a fever pitch when, just a few months back, they hosted their first open house at their new facility in Springfield, Missouri. Fast forward to the Region 12 Championships and it’s clear that not only has the level of their excitement never waned, but it has also increased exponentially. With a trio of mares representing the Hagale family at the show, they came away with three champion titles and one reserve. Two of the Hagale family’s Half-Arabian mares headlined the Region 12 show. I Love Luci (HA Toskcan Sun x Laurel Hill Pennies From Heaven) took home two titles earning Unanimous Champion H/A English Pleasure Junior Horse with trainer Shan Wilson, and Unanimous Champion H/A English Pleasure AAOTR ridden by Jennifer Hagale, daughter of the farm’s owners Jim and Mary Martha. Hazelnut BF (Undulata’s Nutcracker x Ames Deja Vu) brought home the title of Reserve Champion H/A Country English Pleasure Open with Chris Wilson in the irons. The family’s purebred mare, Esperranzza (Emerald J x Vesperra) shared in the spotlight, competing in the Arabian Mares 2 & Over AOTH with Jamie Hagale at the lead. This was Jamie’s halter arena debut, and she came out with a Regional Champion title! Farm manager Jennifer Wilson shared the story of how the Hagale family came to acquire I Love Luci. “I Love Luci was a horse that my brother-in-law, Shan Wilson, bought for a client of his.” She continues, “I don’t think we all knew quite how special she was going to be at that moment, but Shan had a good idea. He took her to Region 11 last year and she just kind of lit the world on fire.” It was around this time that the Hagales were looking for a replacement for the family’s aging Half-Arabian gelding, CSP Hot Dam (Mamage x The Vintage Rose) for Jennifer. “[After Region 11] we all kind of just knew that this was the horse for them,” Wilson says. The decision proved to be a sound one as, following their purchase, the mare enjoyed successful National Show Horse and U.S. Nationals shows. The halter arena is equally thrilled by Esperranzza. “She’s not been shown very much but she’s kind of surprised everybody with her presence, and her ability, and her beauty,” says Jennifer Wilson. Chris
then, they later crossed paths at the Region 13 show. Jennifer Wilson was standing in the warm-up ring with the family when she pointed out Hazelnut and suggested that Jim go watch her class. While he liked another horse better, both Jamie and Mary Martha fell in love with her and the deal to acquire her was made. Beyond their acquisitions, the Hagale family has high hopes going forward for the 20 homebred foals they are expecting next year by their stallions SF Aftershoc (SF Specs Shocwave x SF Sweet Elegance) and SF Destination Victry (SF Specs Shocwave x Aparty Girl). But it isn’t just about the contribution they hope their foals will make. “The Hagales’ are extremely involved and dedicated to the Arabian horse and the industry,” states Jennifer Wilson. “They are in this to make it better for everyone.”■ I LOVE LUCI & Jennifer Hagale Wilson agrees and adds further, “Nobody knew her going into the Scottsdale show and she came out the Reserve Champion Mare in the Open. The halter world has seemed to kind of separate here in the last few years from the performance world just a little bit. We don’t get the opportunity to watch the halter classes or follow them as we did in the old days. But this mare is one that kind of brings you back to the halter. It’s something when she stands up and shows her socks off.” Finally there’s Hazelnut BF. “We were looking at horses for another client of ours and we just happened to look at her,” recalls Jennifer Wilson. “I remember Chris riding her around the outdoor arena at Scottsdale last year and I just thought, she’s not finished but there’s something about her that took my breath away.” While the Hagale family didn’t acquire the mare

& SPOTLIGHT Ocala, Florida … the Kingdom of the Sun, well-known for its citrus production, and listed as one of only five cities to claim the official title of Horse Capital of the World, was host to the Arabian breed’s largest regional show held at the prestigious World Equestrian Center, May 4th-8th. Within an hour’s reach of the well-known sandy beaches of Daytona Beach to the east and Orlando’s many theme parks to the south, the WEC sits on 300 beautiful acres, the over-the-top grounds meeting an exhibitor’s every need and then some. The exposition center, beautiful show arenas and first-rate stabling notwithstanding, nowhere else can one find hotel and RV accommodations, multiple restaurants, a chapel, vet clinic, general store, gas station, retail, salon & spa and laundromat, and more first-class amenities minutes apart from one another. A vast departure from its original home of Perry, Georgia, this game-changing facility provided exhibitors and spectators alike, a unique and appreciative venue to highlight the exquisite Arabian horse. Don’t feel like going out? Watch the evening performances in the Grand Arena from your hotel room or from the Veranda. Have some extra time on your hands or don’t show? The Festivals of Speed Classic Car Show, a dog show, or Kentucky Derby party around the Grand Arena, where the race was played live for all to watch were just a few options. The

destination city of Ocala is also home to and surrounded by many prestigious and well-known farms, including Hennessey Arabian LLC and Rohara Arabians, which welcomed visits throughout the week. Regarding the show itself, the opportunity to show at WEC was just too amazing to turn down for most, some class sizes the equivalent of U.S. Nationals. With that came incredible competition from around the country and a record number of horse show enthusiasts. In addition to the myriad of disciplines and age groups represented at the Championships, the $150,000 Spotlight Futurity and Classic Egyptian Championship classes were well attended once again, and the Spotlight Auction saw nearly 90 stallion breedings sold for over $215,000! Overall, one could not get past the atmosphere and convenience the WEC facility offers, removing all stress and leaving only the enjoyment one experiences from showing and visiting with those who share your passion. A flawless facility makes it impossible to be anything but happy while there, your days spent working horses in the nicest facility you can imagine in the country and once done, you can hop over to the hotel bar, enjoy burgers, pizza, tacos or ice cream at one of the on-site restaurants, or browse through the many shops WEC offers. It surely is, one for the record books.

thoughts from the judges.
Judges: Scott Brumfield, Brian Ferguson and Bob Gordon
I am thankful for the invitation to judge the Classic Egyptian Championships. Initially I was hesitant to accept as it has been quite some time since traveling to the U.S., but after learning where it was taking place, I had to come, and I was not disappointed. The facility was amazing! I have traveled all over the world and judged at many show locations, but the World Equestrian Center by far, had the best show grounds I’ve ever attended. From the overall quality of the buildings, cleanliness, design and layout, to the show staff keeping everything orderly with no delays, the organizers of this event surely gave their all, which was evidenced in their increased entries this year and the overall success of the event. I feel privileged to have met many breeders, and it was an honor to be present among so many wonderful people, judging top quality horses at a stunning venue. -CHEN KEDAR, Ariela Arabians & renowned international judge

It was smiles all around, as usual, at Hennessey Arabians’ Annual Region 12 Luncheon featuring George Z’s world-famous Polish sausage and the incredible 2022 foals that line the pastures. Just 10 minutes from WEC, the farm hosted daily lunch on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with opened pasture gates for everyone to enjoy this year’s mares and babies. The event keeps growing, and this year in particular, enjoyed more “newcomers” to Arabian horses with visitors from the community. “It is always great to have our colleagues join us, and when non-horse related folks show up, it’s even better!” said farm manager George Z. Hennessey Arabians hosted over 100 people across the three days, and when people would ask, “What’s in your famous Polish sausage George?” His response was always “It’s an ancient Chinese secret!”
ROHARA ARABIANS OPEN HOUSE & PRESENTATION On Thursday, May 5th, just a short drive north from Oclala to Orange Lake, Rohara Arabians, along with Midwest Arabians, hosted an evening featuring exquisite Arabian horses under the warm sun of a pleasant evening. Attendees were treated to charcuterie boards of cheese, crackers and fruits pleasantly paired with margaritas and sangria while the sweet sound of a guitar and vocals filled the evening air. Among the 15 beautiful horses presented was … the QR Marc daughter Rohara Marcella, in foal to Midwest’s Sharif Al Zobair, the A Jericho daughter Esprit of Jericho, and Selestial Skye ARS (by Soltire TO) with her Alizandros filly by her side. The night concluded with a shared meal and jovial camaraderie, providing a relaxed and fun opportunity to gather during the Region 12 Championships and Spotlight Futurity.

REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS
REGION 7
Championships
Dubbed the “Valley of the Sun”, anyone who has visited Scottsdale, Arizona would not be surprised to hear that this destination city, over the last few decades, has been one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Its year-round temperate weather and unique landscape, vast culture, shopping, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and art galleries, attract visitors from all over the world to explore. But the cherry on top is the tremendous amount of opportunity to see an Arabian horse! What’s most impressive is the number of farms that call Scottsdale their second location. It makes great business sense and is the ultimate environment to showcase beautiful equines.
The Region 7 Championships does just that. Attendance returned to its normal high before the Covid pandemic hit and barns filled the stalls with eager local and out-of-state participants, happy to be back for the 5-day show. The air was filled with a sense of fun and WestWorld was ever accommodating, its top tier show committee making sure all arenas were filled with every discipline imaginable
that the Arabian horse excels in, as well as providing every shopping need. After kicking off the event with a youth super soaking water balloon fight, excellence showed up in many forms. A double take was needed when many witnessed hunter phenom Justin Cowden in the western pleasure open ring. Aboard Carolyn and Ryan Dunn’s Dixon VA, the pair rode to champion roses. On the opposite side of the spectrum, an Academy ride with Julie Daniel in his first regional show, garnered a top five in a tough Half-Arabian Country class, and Gege Flamino from Burkman Centre, also showing for her first time in the 14 & Under division, took two championship titles in Hunter Pleasure aboard her mare Flawlessly. Regardless of one’s experience, the comradery expressed between competitors was potent, and Region 7 offers an overall welcoming spirit to all, including attracting area spectators with its incredible ability to get the word out which it is well-known for. Ultimately, all were happy to be part of it.

The five days of Trail, Ranch Riding, Ranch Rail and new this year, Ranch Trail, was well attended with 22 goes! The reining classes are always deep at Region 7 with Scottsdale and the surrounding areas host to some of the best Arabian reining trainers, and in the cattle arena was the Herd Work, Working Cow and Reined Cow. I also judged Horsemanship and Reining Seat Equitation. Excellence was found everywhere at this show: Tim “the man of trail” Kimura’s designed trail courses had a lot of challenging obstacles, and being the course designer for U.S. Nationals, working one of his patterns will surely help you get ready for that; the Scottsdale arenas are known for having good footing for reining, and they did not disappoint; the gate managers were very efficient and helpful, eliminating conflicts from the other rings; scribes, Carmen and Walt, were two of the best (a big thanks to them!); and the entire Region 7 show commission and staff were top notch!
thoughts from the judges.
One thing I took home from my experience of judging Region 7 is the horse quality and the horsemanship from both trainers and exhibitors—it is inspiring to all Arabian enthusiasts. I hope one day I can be part of the main ring as well; I got a small taste from judging the ASHO4U, and there’s some fantastic horses to see there, too. –STERLING BRADLEY, Working Western I thought the Region 7 show was very well managed. There was great depth in all divisions and there was a lot of positive energy, which made it fun to judge. My teammates, Lisa Jo White and Bruce Bates, were a pleasure to work with. It was a privilege to judge Region 7. –JOHN RYAN Judges, John Ryan, Lisa Jo White and Bruce Bates (not pictured: Sterling Bradly and Sheri Odom)
The Region 7 Championships was a very good show; every division had national-quality horses. The English and hunter classes were really good, and the halter, though small, had some very nice horses also. I enjoyed judging this show. –BRUCE BATES
