The Big Picture In A Small Frame When competing with your Arabian horses, you may frequently dream of that seamless performance … of ribbons … of roses … of adulation. However, sometimes you can’t do that by yourself, and it is imperative that you enlist the help of another to make those dreams a reality. Enter the Arabian horse trainer. Trainers are the individuals in our community that put the big picture together by working on all of the small things. You see the finished horse and ribbons, and the trainer sees every little step (and there are thousands) it takes along the way to get you and your horse there. In short, the Arabian horse trainer puts your big picture—the winning performance—into a small frame each and every day to make your dreams come true. Yet, what happens when an even bigger picture gets in the way of your dreams? What if your trainer—the conjurer of your equine dreams—has an accident or unforeseen medical issue? What then? Lucky for our community, we have the Horsemen’s Distress Fund. The Horsemen’s Distress Fund (HDF) was established as an emergency fund for all Arabian horsemen, amateur and professional, and is affiliated with the Arabian Professional & Amateur Horsemen’s Association. We can all hope that our horsemen won’t need it—but the sad fact is, they already have and they will in the future. As members of our community, we need to be able to help them when their reality is a world away from ribbons, trophies and dreams come true. From the time Baske Afireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sons and daughters hit the show ring, he has been a sensation. Each year has polished that reputation, as step by step, he has built a record that has propelled him into the highest ranks of Arabian sires.

Baske Afire’s pedigree is rich in national champions. His sire and dam, as well as his grandsire and granddam, were national champions and producers of national champions. Most of his champions at the major shows now are divided equally between halter and performance, with nearly all of his performance champions in the English and country English pleasure divisions. In 2008, he was Top Five on 13 of the 18 AHT charts for U.S. Nationals, as well as second on the National Show Horse leading sire roster. The sheer magnitude of Baske Afire’s achievements tells his story. At Scottsdale in 2009, he was the Arabian Horse Times Leading Sire of Half-Arabian Halter Winners, more than 100 points ahead of his nearest competition. In addition, he was second on the Leading Halter and Performance Sires of Purebred and Half-Arabian Winners ranking. As of August of this year, Baske Afire’s record of success reflected a total of 92 purebred champions, 20 national winners (with 46 total national wins) and six national and reserve national champion purebred offspring. At Canada 2009, the trend continued, with five national championships added, along with three reserves and 15 top tens. In addition to winning at the national level, Baske Afire offspring also command a solid return on investment for breeders. In addition to private sales, the yearling filly HA Sahara Afire, bred by Michelle Harris, changed hands for $120,000 at the 2008 Cedar Ridge Select Sale. Prestige Farm’s Irwin Schimmel states that he has bred and sold numerous Baske Afire offspring from weanlings to training age for figures in excess of $100,000, receiving a record price of more than $250,000 for a 2-year-old Baske Afire filly. “I’ve sold every one of my Baske Afire foals,” says Vicki Humphrey, who has bred several mares to the stallion, “for at least $75,000.” Baske Afire’s significance continues to grow in the Arabian show ring. His presence on the leading sire lists, both by points and number of winners, proves salient facts: He offers not only a high percentage of champions and reserves, but also a wide range of successful representatives—not just a few stellar individuals.

Strawberry Banks Farm has announced that beginning with the 2010 breeding season, a select number of breedings will be offered for purchase to stallions Baske Afire, A Temptation and Hey Hallelujah, and when those have been sold, Strawberry Banks Farm's stallions' public books will be closed.

Here young and old, experienced horseman and beginner, all come together in friendship to savor the challenge of competing and satisfaction of improving the Arabian breed … with the hope their passion for the Arabian horse will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” Should anyone doubt the magic that surrounds Midwest, look at the unrivaled success the Midwest team continues to experience in every aspect of the industry: competing, breeding and marketing. While those successes are tangible and can be defined by mere numbers, it is those achievements that can’t be defined by numbers that have become the true measure of Midwest. The many hugs from friends, old and new. The light in a child’s eye when he or she touches a National Champion. The shared tears of joy. The many smiles of encouragement. The laughter of friends joined in fellowship around a bonfire. These are the “things” that define Midwest.

Iff what h iis on the h outside id d matters, the h M Midwest id id kingdom in Elk River, Minn., is welcoming with its gently rolling, grassy hills with mares and foals playing; matching barns; pristine white fencing; and beautifully groomed landscaping. The Scottsdale location, where the show string spends the winter months, is equally appealing, with no attention to detail left undone. But like the numbers, the physical Midwest isn’t the most important. It’s the intangibles. Chat with David Boggs for a few minutes and although he could, he doesn’t start listing numbers of championships, numbers of horses sold or numbers of times he personally has visited the winner’s circle. No, talk with David Boggs and he will tell you about the soul of Midwest. “Enjoyment of the Arabian horse is paramount at Midwest,” he says. “We have tried to create an atmosphere where people are comfortable, have a great time, are able to enjoy one another, and experience the best Arabian horses in the country, if not the world.” David and his team have built it—and the friends he has made in the process agree, Midwest is a special place. Pam Bauerlein, Halbrook Arabians, has this to say about Midwest, “It’s like Disneyland for people. Until you’ve been there, you simply can’t

understand it,” she says. “The people in the barn are all so much fun. David and his team have a unique gift. The people up there make Midwest,” says Bauerlein. She isn’t the only one who considers the Midwest team to be family. Janey Morse, Oak Ridge Arabians, who recently returned from a weekend trip to Midwest, says, “When we go, it’s like we’re going home. They’ve made their farm and home everyone’s home. Don and I got back into Arabians on a whim, and we’ve become hard and fast friends with the Midwest group. We share one another’s victories. We never dreamed we would meet so many wonderful people as part of the Midwest team.” Dan and Maureen Grossman have known the Boggs family since 1984. With the help of David, they have bought and marketed some of the most high profile stallions in the business, including Bey Shah and DA Valentino, but talk to Dan Grossman and it isn’t necessarily all about the horses. Instead, like Bauerlein and Morse, it’s about the friends and family. “When my time on this earth is done, I’ll look back on this as one of the best times in my entire life,” he says. Transcending the numbers and the physical elements of Midwest is this indefinable, magical experience that Bauerlein, Morse and Grossman have tried to put into words. What are the ingredients? A little of Midwest magic dust. Take one talented David Boggs,

an incredible wife in Terry Anne, daughters Courtney, Lyndsey and Emma, young Jake Boggs, and David’s sister Judi heading up the breeding management, an unrivaled team surrounding them, beautiful facilities, world-renowned Arabian stallions, mares and future stars, the Pony Trail with its bonfire, dance floor and outdoor projection screens, dice games, children’s activities ... and the list goes on and on. “We’ve had lots of

open barn parties this summer,” says Assistant Marketing Director Travis Rice. “That’s what people remember. That’s what it’s about. Your time in the show ring is very brief. If you don’t have fun with the people around you and enjoy those relationships, why do it?” Lest anyone think the Midwest magic resides only at the Elk River or Scottsdale facility, they’re wrong.

No, amazingly, the Midwest magic travels with the team. At the recent Iowa Gold Star Futurity Show, the Midwest team collectively had 55 entries with 83 stalls and offered the breedings of more than 20 stallions on the Gold Star auction. But, again, it’s not really about the numbers. Russ Reynolds, chairman of the Iowa Gold Star Futurity, says the Midwest impact on that particular show is bigger than the number of stalls, entries or victories. He also speaks to the magic that is Midwest. “They bring the environment with them” he says. “There’s no question about it. There’s a euphoria they have—it’s hard to describe. But whatever it is, other people recognize it and want to be a part of it. That helps bring new people into the industry,” he says. The Man Behind The Magic While everyone agrees the magical Midwest experience is more than the hard numbers, we would be remiss in not addressing them to give a complete picture. After all, the Arabian horse is what brought this unique group of people together in the beginning, and the horses as well as their now solidified friendships — are what will keep them together. Dan Grossman, who has known David the longest (of those interviewed), describes him as the most Intense, Driven, Charismatic, Talented, Successful halter trainer in the business.

“His record speaks to that. There is only one David Boggs, and David Boggs is the best, period. He wants to win. And what you notice about David is that he doesn’t want to win just part of the time or some of the time, he wants to win all the time,” says Grossman. According to Grossman, the desire and will to succeed translates into an intensity with which David conducts his everyday business. “I’m pretty sure he lives with his computer in front of him as you can pretty much reach him 24 hours a day. He is the best Arabian businessman in the industry. No more discussion.”

That intensity has led to the success of Midwest in business terms, which we will look at by the numbers here: • International, national, regional championships– more than 500 ... too many to count • Average number of breedings marketed each year: 400 – 500 • Average number of embryo transfers: 100 – 200 per season • Value of horses marketed in an average year: literally in the millions • Midwest magic – Priceless!

How does one operation achieve such success in all aspects of the Arabian horse industry? It all starts with the honest and true love of and appreciation for the Arabian horse as the foundation. Winning is important, exciting, a great goal, but the passion for the horse is what drives David Boggs, and what he transfers to his clients. Bauerlein says it all starts with building a relationship with the horse. “They really want you to have a relationship with your horse. These horses aren’t just china dolls that we’re not allowed to touch.” Rather, they are encouraged to spend oneon-one time with their horses, walking them for a bite of grass in the Midwest fields or feeding them treats. Although initially intimidated with the thought of taking a lesson with Boggs, Bauerlein was quick to relax. “He takes all the time with you that you need and makes it an extremely positive experience,” she says. Bauerlein goes on to describe a recent experience schooling at the Canadian Nationals. “There were a couple of people helping me and things weren’t going quite right. I was getting frustrated, and the mare was getting frustrated. Then all of a sudden she just relaxed and let down. When I turned around, I saw what she saw—David.”

Don Morse has also noticed Boggs’ unique gift. “The kindness with which he treats the horses is amazing,” he says. “David has taught both Janey and me so much about horses. It’s too bad he loses at dice all the time!” Besides teaching by example with his treatment of the Arabian horses in his care, Boggs opens the minds of his clients by introducing them to breeding philosophies and programs around the world. According to Rice, the Midwest team, with various members in tow, travel to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Australia and other venues to visit international friends and to learn. “Everyone enjoys seeing different breeding philosophies. We are all very open-minded, and everyone is committed to the betterment of the Arabian breed,” he says. “Traveling around the world as a team is just one of the other ways we all enjoy each other’s company. At Midwest, it isn’t about ‘I,’ it’s about the team.” As the group collectively looks forward to the 2009 U.S. Nationals with its stallion presentations, barn parties and expanded stall space, Rice predicts the Midwest magic will continue. “As the industry has changed, we’ve continued to improve our program to keep things fun for everyone,” he says. Without a doubt, the magic that is Midwest will continue as the team continues building on the intangibles that make Midwest what it is—more than top-notch Arabian horses, more than championship titles, more than beautiful facilities, more than a business success story.

Each year, the enthusiastic and dedicated young man is responsible for assisting in marketing presentations, purchase evaluations, special events and literally millions of dollars worth of sales for Midwest clients world wide. The 2009 Midwest Private Treaty Sales garnered millions of dollars worth of magnificent animals. These achievements were in large part due to the extraordinary efforts of Travis Rice.

As it has for many years, Midwest Station, the breeding facility, represents some of the world’s finest and most sought-after Arabian stallions.
