Unforgettable Fire

Afires Heir Taking English Pleasure To The Next Level by Colleen Scott When Afires Heir and Joel Kiesner stormed into the Arabian English Pleasure Championship class at the U.S. Nationals in Tulsa last year, mouths were hanging open in awe. As they made brilliant pass after pass, people were talking—the stallion looked even better than he had the year before when he won the junior horse championship title (unanimously). Yet, when another competitor’s mount threw a shoe and Joel dismounted and walked away, leaving Afires Heir (Afire Bey V x Brassmis) unattended the crowd was stunned. Was Joel really the horse whisperer and simply told the horse to “stay?” Was Afires Heir, just a 6-year-old at the time, such a low-key, calm stallion that he would just stand there, in a strange place, patiently waiting for his rider to return? Or perhaps, was it a little bit of both? Joel remounted and took the championship title unanimously for proud owners Bill and Shirley Reilich, who had purchased the stallion in 2004. “What you saw in Tulsa you can see everyday at Joel’s place,” says Bill. “He just loves to trot, and he keeps getting better and better.” So, how did Bill and Shirley come to own Afires Heir, a stallion Kiesner describes as “a catalyst for change in the purebred English division?” To understand, you have to go back to Shirley’s childhood. “I was born wanting to ride a horse,” she says. “I grew up on a dairy farm and tried to ride a cow!” Unsuccessful in that venture, it wasn’t until Shirley was an executive with IBM and married to Bill that she realized her dream.

Afires Heir and Joel Kiesner.

In 1979, the couple purchased their first registered Arabian. Like many who become enamored with Arabian horses, they quickly found that one or two mares grew to many, and they started a small breeding operation, primarily focusing on Egyptian bloodlines. As the two moved around the country for Shirley’s executive role at IBM, Bill found himself building barn after barn to accommodate the horses. “We moved a lot, and it seemed every time we finished a barn the way we wanted it, we had to leave,” recalls Bill. In the 1990s, their herd was reduced to just a pleasure horse for Shirley, but their relationship with Arabians was far from over—instead, the best was yet to come. On assignment in California, but with an eye on retirement, Bill and Shirley asked Joel to find them a “great horse.” While the initial thought was for Joel to find a suitable show horse for Shirley, who is six feet tall

AFIRES HEIR

“He is super intelligent, super willing and always has been. He never bucked at the surcingle or saddle and has just been great to work with. He’ll get excited and really show if you ask him to, but he’ll also just walk flat-footed without fussing about it. His babies are proving to have the same great mind and work ethic.” — Joel Kiesner

AFIRES HEIR

so favors Half-Arabians, there were few other parameters. When Joel called Bill and Shirley to tell them he had finally found a great horse for them, there was good news and not-so-good news. The good news was that the Reilichs had never heard Joel so excited about a horse. The not-so-good news was that the horse didn’t quite meet the parameters of being a show horse for Shirley. “Joel is normally very measured. However, he simply could not contain himself when he talked about this horse,” says Shirley. “We’ve known Joel since 2001 and have such respect for his ability to look at a horse and understand what it can become,” she says. They decided to purchase Afires Heir, then an unproven 2-year-old, sight unseen. When Bill and Shirley did get to see Afires Heir in person three months later, they were happily shocked. “The first time we saw him was at Joel’s farm. His entrance into Joel’s arena was incredible. He was trotting over level in-hand,” says Shirley. There was no doubt in either of their minds they’d made the right decision— even if he wasn’t to be Shirley’s riding horse. Afires Heir made his show debut at the Shenandoah Valley Championships in June, 2006, winning the Arabian English Pleasure Junior Horse class. He followed that up on the big stage winning at the 2007 Scottsdale Show and at the 2007 U.S. Nationals. In 2008, when he moved to the open English pleasure division, Afires Heir still proved his mettle, capturing the class and championship titles at the Scottsdale Show and again at the U.S. Nationals, when Joel so famously walked away from him like he was showing in a trail class. While owners and trainer say they may bring him out in Tulsa again this year, they are more focused on the next stage of the stallion’s already noteworthy career— breeding. Named to the list of Leading Juvenile Sires in 2008, Afires Heir leapt to near the top of the list in 2009 with 96 registered get. As his first foal crop begins to hit the show ring, the normally measured Joel is again showing his excitement about his horse. “I’ve had the privilege of working with some of his get in the barn and seeing them mature. Their performance careers just can’t come fast enough,” he says. “We are having so much fun with his babies. They might be the smartest, most trainable babies I’ve ever worked around.”

That the babies are worthy of such accolades isn’t necessarily a surprise to Joel based on his experience with Afires Heir. “He is super intelligent, super willing and always has been. He never bucked at the surcingle or saddle and has just been great to work with. He’ll get excited and really show if you ask him to, but he’ll also just walk flatfooted without fussing about it. His babies are proving to have the same great mind and work ethic,” says Joel. He isn’t the only one that is excited about the Afires Heir offspring. Two of his get were the second and third highest-selling horses at the recent Addis auction. Another of his get, BL Heir Supreme (Afires Heir x Harghaza), was recently sold to a client of Christine Johnston’s at Iron Horse Farms. According to Kiesner, she is singing the praises of the new addition to their barn. “She called and just couldn’t be happier with the horse— how wonderful he was to be around, train and ride,” he says. “There have been many of his babies sold, and all the new owners and trainers are thrilled,” he says. Bill and Shirley, who live just minutes from Joel’s farm, visit several times a week to dote on Afires Heir, who they say loves his carrots just like any other horse. They’re also visiting Shirley’s new show horse, a Half-Arabian, Half-Dutch Harness Horse she’ll be bringing out next year. Still, all eyes around the barn are usually on Afires Heir. “He just has such an incredible beauty and presence,” says Shirley. “I just keep pinching myself that he is really ours.” The couple is committed to taking Afires Heir to the next level as a sire. With the interest they are receiving in him even as a juvenile sire, it’s apparent there are many believers in this stallion. “He has the potential to make a huge impact,” says Bill. “Our role is to properly promote and advertise him, make him available to people, and allow him to reach his full potential. We are so excited about going and cheering for his babies; we just can’t wait for them to get in the ring.” The Reilichs aren’t just talking—they’ve also put a prize money package together for Afires Heir get shown in the Arabian English Performance Association YearlingIn-Hand class at the Ohio Buckeye. “This is a great climax to our longtime involvement with Arabian horses,” says Bill. “Afires Heir is really going to make a great contribution to the English division.” ■

As we continue to build on our reputation of success and integrity, Shada has been elevated to new heights by all of you! Thank you. The Schall Family and all at Shada

Arabians of Qiran Al Sa’dain, LLC, Lisa East It is so refreshing to have an enthusiastic stallion owner like Lisa, with such creative gifts. She is a “take the bull by the horns” type of person. Her stallion Marjestic has begun to reap the rewards of all of our efforts. He is peaking at just the right time, riding high into Tulsa as one of the top contenders for National Champion Junior Stallion. Lisa’s studs, Marjestic and Ron, have been one of Shada’s 2009 highlights!

Aradon Farm, The Olveys One of the newest members to the Shada family Don, Ellen and their stallion PS Andiamo, are a fantastic addition to an already star studded line up. Their stallion is so magnetic that we just light up when we watch him or speak of him. Show plans including the national futurities are on the horizon. It is going to be exciting!

Avalon Crest, The Steffens It has been such a joy to watch Andy and Christine’s dream become a reality. They have created an absolute first class farm and breeding program while entrusting us with some of the most exotic creatures, such as the exported fi lly Marnika. Such great examples of the power of positive energy!

Brevian Farm, Brad Herman Take what you love and combine it with the desire to help others. That’s indeed what Brad has done with his Arabian horse endeavor. He is sincere, straight forward and full of ambition. Our latest conquest resulted in a Canadian National Top Ten Futurity title with the captivating fi lly New York Thymes. Brad has a real understanding and appreciation for a job well done, that’s who he is!

Daly Pride Arabians, The Truitts Every vision needs reality to make it happen – that’s where Ed and Sarah complement each other tremendously. He conjures up the image and she handles the details. Their dynamic young colt GH Maryn has catapulted them into the winner’s circle and all the excitement that comes with stallion ownership. Hopes are running high with two foals on the way. It’s a time to flourish as we embrace the motto: “No task too tall!”

Day Dream Arabians, Carol Steppe If we had a dime for every time that Carol has been referred to as an outstanding breeder or phenomenal person, we could retire. She and her horses are indelible in our hearts and souls. We have such fondness for her and the beautiful horses she breeds. Better is one day with Carol and her companions than thousands elsewhere!

Deer Haven Arabians, Derus and Gellin Here’s a mother-daughter team with a knack for making just the right moves. Carol and Terri sent their fi rst young star Sohlaris to Shada six years ago. A number of training horses and numerous accolades later, we still laugh together as if we just met. With their new up and coming young Marwan Al Shaqab son, Marvilloso and fantastic group of mares in foal, it is certain that more good times lie ahead!

Elevation Farm, The Blackburns An enthusiastic young couple; Jeremy, Kim and son Cal can now say they have it all! They have JB Hometown Hottie! A sports car with four legs, she is lightening in a bottle! As newcomers to the halter ring, Kim and Hottie are a perfect match. Kim brings the best out in Hottie and vice versa. Everyone was grinning from ear to ear as we watched Hottie win her first national championship in Canada. We have only just begun!

Falconhurst, David Zouch Ross Have you ever met someone who knows more about your lifetime trade while claiming to just be starting? Enter David Ross from Australia. If you need clarification on a who, how or why, go to the man from down under. His great wealth of knowledge (and not just about horses), is inspiring. His wise decisions on breeding and show stock are proof positive of such insight. We look forward to Scottsdale 2010 with Marwan Al Magnifficoo, the stallion that is setting North America on fire and heating up elsewhere!

Gemini Ranch, Duke Mendel The challenge of owning one of the preeminent sires and show stallions in our breed is not an easy one. Duke, since his exciting acquisition of Odyssey SC nearly three years ago, has done a tremendous job of expanding the Odyssey family and continuing the journey. Salute to our 2009 Canadian National Champion Stallion!

G-Force Arabians, The Gromelskis The perfect blend of involved, knowledgeable and informed, Jim and Cindy have been quietly breeding some of the most beautiful athletes in the industry. They are beginning to turn heads in multiple divisions. Look and listen as we turn up the volume in 2010 and make some noise with the newest Maserati WR foal out of an Ali Jamaal mare. Revving up for the future!

H B Arabians, Hilliard & Bruce What an opportunity it was when David Cains rang our phone in the spring of 2009 with John & Christine’s interest in relocating their stallion, Brixx IA. Some six months later, we have all developed a forward-thinking, common goal approach to promoting one of the most beautiful young stallions in the world. Congratulations on your recent Canadian national championship title. The sky is the limit!

Island Arabians, The James When you hear the sincerity and heartfelt way in which Don and wife Ruth speaks of their prized possession mare, Island Elegance, it is truly inspiring. She has brought so much joy not only to them, but also to others in her life: The Pringles, The Friesens, Shada, etc. When Elie wore the national champion mare rose garland this year, she was truly a “Lady in Red.”

Jerland Farms, The Jeromes and The VanHandels It is an understatement to say that Larry and Shelley do things in a big fashion. A big family, large weddings, lots of grandchildren. It comes as no surprise they also promote, breed and show their fine Arabian horses on a grand scale. We’ve experienced both the tears and cheers

through the glue that holds us together, national champion MPA Giovanni. His Half-Arabian daughter, Blue Moon J, most recently garnered a Canadian national title. Like father, like daughter!

The Kruses With a national top ten and regional championship to his credit, Justin has a cool, calm and collected approach to the show ring. His seemingly lack of nerves translates into high anxiety for mom Laure and the rest of us! Th is mother-son combo can light up a room, their smiles and down to earth attitudes are refreshing for all of us. We are optimistic for big things as their two homebred beauties compete in an upcoming futurity jackpot.

Milestone Arabians, The Miles Take a passion for animals, including horses, and turn it into a family affair. That’s what Steve and Darla are doing. One visit and it hits you like a ton of bricks – great kids, a ranch like heaven on earth and passion – that’s what it is all about. Th is is one hard-working family with a zest not just for Arabian horses, but for life. Wishing you the best with your two yearling stars who’ve earned their spot on the national roster!

Mountain Classic Arabians, The Buxtons It was five years ago when we embarked on a national campaign with Gary and Debra and their futurity fi lly, MCA Eternal Secret. Their horses have always reflected a taste for the finer things and an eye for quality. Following Secret’s national top ten win, she rewarded us with a spectacular son, MCA Prince Marwan. We have come full circle as Prince vies for the futurity colt title in Tulsa!

Park Place Arabians, The Bachmans From the green fields of Wisconsin to sunny Arizona, wherever Bill and Donna go they bring a passion for life. They have been a pillar of hope for all of us. Jeff is the most fortunate since he and Bill converse most frequently, talking candidly, enjoying every step in the process. FoxFire BHF was a big part of our lives, and since his exportation to Australia, the Bachman’s mare line-up has really come together. Their young Marwan son, Casanova PPA is U.S. nationals’ bound and expecting siblings in the Spring. Hang on for what promises to be quite a ride!

Prairie View Farm, The Bensons If we told you our relationship with Punch, Ann and daughter Megan went all the way back to the illustrious Mujibar, you might ask ‘who?’ Although Muj may not be a “who’s who,” their small, yet mightily successful program is! Ann conquered Scottsdale in 2008 and will once again be pursuing the limelight in 2010, MN Breeders and 2011 Scottsdale with auction contenders.

Premier Arabian Farms, The Aspeslaghs We simply don’t get to see Frank and Marji enough. They are hard at work, high on their top of the world Colorado paradise. This year they leased many of their special mares out in hopes of being ready to fire up next year. It is such a delight to work with such good spirited individuals and we look forward to once again being in the winner’s circle with them.

Rehorn Arabians, The Rehorns A decisive, quiet leader that gives his all for the girls in his life, Scott and his wife, Susan, have huge hearts and are extremely good to us. Together we have had a wide range of success, the latest of which is an outstanding auction jackpot colt named Alter Ego RA. Th is one is so good that we are certain to not be in the “Red!”

Shuster Arabians, The Shusters It’s been said that letting clients become friends is dangerous, but is there any other way? When Jason, Devon and Aunt Laura brought their lanky, gorgeous gelding, Relentlyss, to us four years ago, we had no idea of the good times that would ensue. Now a multi-national winner, Jason, Relentlyss and Imagine Fame are part of the Shada landscape. With such fantastic memories already, his horse passion has been ignited!

Tall Timber Arabians, Noel Bosse It was reported that Noel and her adviser Ken Davis were looking for just the right place for their amazing stallion Art Dekko TT. We’re overjoyed by their decision to bring him to Shada. If ever a horse could make you melt, this one does. Noel and her love for Dek remind us all why we enjoy what we’re doing so much. We consider it an honor!

Weber Arabians, The Webers Nestled along a winding road in Minnesota, rests a serene place Hal and Margot call home. Along with daughters Anissa and Anique, they have had an avid life long affinity for and with the Arabian horse. Adding to our already deep roots are those fond family moments when we all, including Felicia, get to rush to the winners circle for the picture. Times to remember!

Western Cross Ranch, The Dillins If exotic is your flavor, Linden and Holly has the Baskin Robbins of Arabian horses. No matter your color preference, purebred or part-bred Arabians, there is a special companion for you in the pasture or stalls of Western Cross Ranch in Texas. WC Ciao Bella, son WC Ciao Psyche and WC Gorgeous Gazal are just a few of the many beauties that have graced Shada in the last couple of years. A program that is “heads” above!

Westridge Farm, The Syllas When Aristokayte came into Mark and Val’s life seven years ago, it was a magical, unforgettable day. Multiple national championships and several outstanding babies later, Aristokayte is irreplaceable. What a blessing she has been to all of us. She has raised the bar for those who have followed. Only the best!

Will-O-Mar, The Summers A pair of spark plugs, Ric and Cecilia are one of the most genuinely nice couples you will ever meet. We are thrilled with their breeding and show success as of late. There’s no one that gets more nervous than Ric when a Will-O-Mar horse is in the ring. He’s here, he’s there, he’s everywhere. We have witnessed him standing far away amongst a group of total strangers during a crucial point in a class. The good news is he always comes back!

ready to debut on the national stage. In 2000, Miller’s final Youth Nationals, he captured the National Championship in Arabian Gelding In-Hand Junior Owner to Handle 17 & Under. That victory cemented the deal, his life’s vocation would be working with Arabian horses.

Growing up in Kansas City, Kansas, Austin developed his passion for the breed thanks to his mother who was an avid horsewoman and had him riding before he was even in school. “I grew up around Arabians and loved being around them and working with them,” he says. “I never really considered another breed – Arabians are so unique, there was nothing else out there that compared.”

Three and one half years later and counting, Austin remains happy to be part of the team, one that he considers family. “We have a great atmosphere and chemistry here,” he says. His natural talents and genuine love of the horses, combined with a stellar work ethic, makes him a great asset. He has been experiencing success at every turn, from earning open National titles himself, to being the trainer and man behind numerous amateur jackpot wins for Shada’s clients. Austin’s positive attitude and attention to detail is evident. We tip our hat in appreciation for all he does.

He showed as a youth rider in both performance and halter and when his grandfather purchased RH Lexington, he was

MARWAN AL MAGNIFFICOO

Marwan Al Magnifficoo (Marwan Al Shaqab X Pacific Echo).

98AA | AR ABIAN HORSE TIMES

MARWAN AL MAGNIFFICOO

Cover Story:

Marwan Al Magnifficoo The Legacy Begins by Colleen Scott David Zouch Ross of Victoria, Australia, breeder of Welsh Ponies, English Riding ponies and Australian stock horses, may seem an unlikely candidate to launch an Arabian breeding program. The connection to Arabians, however, is closer than you think. “Most of the horses I’ve bred over the past three decades have Arabian blood in them already,” states Ross. A long-time student of bloodlines and breeder of highly successful ponies abroad and in the U.S., when he decided to start an Arabian breeding program, he did so like he began his other programs—by carefully studying bloodlines. Ross scoured websites, studying numerous prospects, eventually landing on Marwan Al Magnifficoo, whom he viewed as a yearling over the Internet. Ross requested additional video footage of the colt, which is by Marwan Al Shaqab and out of the Echo Magnifficoo daughter Pacific Echo, with specific requests to see him moving toward and away from the camera at different gaits. Then owners Milton and Leanne Davis complied and with trainer/handler Jeff Schall of Shada, Inc., produced the video and sent it to Ross, who was immediately sold. “He has the bloodlines I was looking for, had very correct conformation at all gaits, and had such a beautiful neck—probably the prettiest I’ve ever seen,” he says.

as he knows the stallion has the makings of a great one. “He is unique. It is so rare to have one horse embody such scope, stretch and elasticity combined with incredible beauty.” With those victories, Schall and Ross both had high hopes for the remainder of the 2009 show season. Such would not be the case. Just prior to the Canadian Nationals, the stallion suffered a bout of colic, forcing him to the sidelines. The two made the difficult decision to leave the stallion home from the U.S. Nationals, even though he is now 100% recovered. “It just didn’t seem to be in the best interest of this incredible horse to put him back into the kind of conditioning schedule required for the U.S. Nationals,” says Schall.

The first time Ross would lay eyes on the colt in person was at the 2007 U.S. Nationals where Shada’s Austin Miller would show him in the Arabian Yearling Colt/ Gelding Breeders Sweepstakes Championship Class. The pair captured a Top Ten title out of a highly competitive field of 33, solidifying for Ross that his decision had been a good one. “I wouldn’t have changed my mind about the colt,” he says, “but having him place well in that class did help validate that I was on the right track. I knew he had a lot of potential.”

Many who have chosen to breed to Marwan Al Magnifficoo include top breeders, owners and handlers, which delights Ross. “It says something when people from all walks of life, with all different types of mares, buy breeding rights to your stallion,” he says.

At the 2008 Scottsdale Show, Marwan Al Magnifficoo won the Arabian Stallion Breeding 2-Year-Old & Over Class, and then took the Reserve title in the championship class. Schall wasn’t particularly surprised,

Thankfully, there are no plans for Marwan Al Magnifficoo to leave the United States for down under anytime soon. “I left him in America because he has so much potential, so much to offer,” concludes Ross. ■

The team is now focused on the 2010 season, with a dream of winning the Triple Crown (victories in Scottsdale, Canada, and the U.S.). In the meantime, they are easing Marwan Al Magnifficoo back to work and awaiting additional offspring to hit the ground. “We’re very excited about the breeders that have selected Marwan Al Magnifficoo as a sire,” says Schall. “Sometimes, when you breed, you have to give something up in order to get something else, but not with this stallion. I think you have a chance to get everything with him.”

Ross himself has amassed a group of mares from the most well-known bloodlines (think *Padron, Ali Jamaal, Magnum Psyche) in the industry, and is looking forward to launching his own program.

"I had the distinct pleasure of judging Megga Starr with Rick Gault at the Canadian Nationals this past August. To me, these two expressed the epitome of a solid, pretty western pleasure performance. Along with beautiful expression, Megga Starr was balanced and free moving at all his gaits—the look of a true National Champion." ~ Richard Petty

The one thing I can’t forget when I go to a horse show is … enough coffee to get me through the long days and good shoes. 3. As an amateur I can provide a welcoming environment for newcomers to the breed, along with showcase my animals to new people, especially children wanting to work with a horse for the first time to promote the Arabian horse. 5. Linda Hackett

1. I got into Arabian horses because … of their beauty and presence. My husband and I visited a local Quarter Horse farm where we planned to purchase two horses. We must have looked at 40 Quarter Horses that day and there was just nothing that excited us. As we left the barn, tucked in stalls in the very back corner were two horses that we were not shown. I glanced in the stalls and there they were, exactly what I wanted. The barn manager informed us that they were Arabians, the only two on the place. With absolutely no knowledge of the breed, we purchased those two beautiful Arabians. Someone was looking out for us that day! Have you ever seen an English class at a Quarter Horse show? 2. The one thing I can’t forget when I go to a horse show is … my baseball caps. 3. My favorite part of a horse show is … entering the class. I love the sound the horses hooves make when entering the ring. 4. As an amateur I can participate in our club’s all-breed local activities to promote the Arabian horse. 5. If I had the time/energy, I would also compete in the Show Hack division. 6. If my husband wasn’t at a horse show with me, it wouldn’t be the same. 7. Besides riding, I enjoy ... healthy gourmet cooking. 8. The book I’m reading right now is … “The House On Sprucewood Lane,” by Caroline Slate. 9. I finished the class and made it into the Top Eight.

Beth Hageman

Farm Name/Trainer Affiliation: Rick Gault Training 1. I got into Arabian horses because ... as a teenager, I worked on an Arabian farm one summer and was so taken with their intelligence and beauty. Later, when my daughter and I were looking for her first horse for 4-H, we were enamored with a 10-year-old purebred Arabian named Step Ahead, and he has been the greatest horse and companion! 2. The one thing I can’t forget when I go to a horse show is ... to take lots of Imodium!

Amelia Hruban

Farm Name/Trainer Affiliation: Chestnuthill Arabians – Joe Alberti, Jessica Belt 1. I got into Arabian horses because … at the time, I had been riding for about seven years at a hunter/dressage barn when I realized I wanted to show competitively. I had a friend who rode Arabians at Chestnuthill and traveled all over showing successfully. I pretty much thought this was the coolest thing, and not once have I regretted my switch to the exciting world of the Arabian horse. 2. The one thing I can’t forget when I go to a horse show is … my horse! You can forget almost anything else and have someone who is willing to share. 3. My favorite part of a horse show is … the atmosphere and the competition. I love seeing everyone I missed from last season and catching up. There is also nothing that can actually beat showing. The best times are those spent at horse shows. 4. As an amateur I can share my enthusiasm for our breed to promote the Arabian horse. 5. If I had the time/energy, I would also compete in, definitely, the English division. It’s not necessarily a time or energy issue, more a money one. 6. My favorite place to travel to is … Thailand.

Laurie Husband

Farm Name/Trainer Affiliation: Culbreth Equine Training and Management 1. I got into Arabian horses because … my family has been in the business for a very long time. My dad, John Ames, bought his first Half-Arabian from my uncle Dick when I was 4. My mom made our stall decorations, and my dad and I showed the horses. I stopped showing for a while and just started again about 7 years ago. It is much different as an adult then it was as a kid. Having more obligations as an adult makes it difficult to balance it all sometimes. Thank goodness for my husband, Dale. 2. Farm Name/Trainer Affiliation: Our Farm is Paper Chase Farm; My trainer is Rick Gault Training Center. 1. I got into Arabian horses because … I grew up with black and white television, and Roy Rogers was my Saturday morning hero. It was always my dream to own a horse. I test-rode some nice Quarter Horses, but I purchased an Arabian horse because of the sheer beauty and presence of the breed. 2. The one thing I can’t forget when I go to a horse show is … my wife, Nancy. Nancy and I met showing horses, and we have shared our passion together ever since 1986. As an amateur, to promote the Arabian horse, at the East Coast Championships in Lexington, Va., recently, I was working my Appaloosa in a warm up ring and some spectators were trying to take pictures of his beautiful spotted blanket. I was fortunate that there was time to stop, and not only allow these people to take pictures of “Double D,” but also pet him. I believe that we all need to make more time for those people who have taken their time to come and watch our horses. 5. If I had the time/energy, I would also compete in the Reining division. 6. Lester Martin

Farm Name/Trainer Affiliation: L&B Farms, Liberty Meadows – Ryan Strand, Elise Worman and Alan Clanton 1. I got into Arabian horses because … it was a good way to keep me out of trouble when I was a young kid. My parents were more interested in having me at the barn, as opposed to getting into more trouble with my friends. I then fell in love with the Arabian horse because of their passion for life, beauty, and true spirit. My first horse became my best friend. 2. The one thing I can’t forget when I go to a horse show is … make sure to stock the wine cabinet in the RV. I have found a horse show with red wine is a horse show full of laughter and friends. A horse show without red wine seems like something is missing. 3. My favorite part of a horse show is … seeing my friends from other barns and from around the country. Th is is one of the best ways to meet people from all over the country who have so much to t each me about life. 4. As an amateur I can share my experiences with the Arabian horse with everyone I come in contact with to promote the Arabian horse. I feel the true way to grow our business is to find new clients among the business and personal associates I come in contact with daily. Getting people guided and directed into lesson programs, that are designed with Arabian horses at the core, is a great way to allow people around me to see what I do in the breed I so love. 5. If I had the time/energy, I would also compete in the Western division. I actually just purchased a new Half-Arabian western prospect. She is a yearling, but I am willing to wait and work hard with my trainers to learn to relax and go slow. As Jody Strand stated, “There is not enough Valium in the place to get me through a western class.” I am here to prove him wrong. 6. If my life partner, my dogs, and my friends weren’t at a horse show with me, it wouldn’t be the same. 7. Besides riding, I enjoy … playing as much tennis as my schedule will permit, camping, and traveling with friends. 8. The book I’m reading right now is … “National Geographic,” on Peru—taking a trip to there in November with a few of my horse show friends. 9. My favorite place to travel to is … again, have not been there yet, but hoping it is Peru. I like Greece a great deal, but hope the mountains and deserts of Peru are as wonderful as Mona Mulford has made it out to be—she states it will be life changing. 10.
