In the history of the Arabian breed in North America, only two sires have dominated the English division of the show ring—“dominant” being defined as accounting for not only the champion but also a significant number of the top ten horses in the class. The first was *Bask, who was the hallmark from the late 1960s through the early 1990s; the second is Afire Bey V, whose prepotency became apparent in the late 1990s and continues today. Will the Arabian horse industry see their like again? Yes. How will that be achieved? By combining the best of those two touchstone stallions. It is happening at Strawberry Banks Farm. The statistics, simply, are staggering. Central to the Strawberry Banks program are the three stallions Baske Afire, Hey Hallelujah and A Temptation. That all three are proven sires, represented by winners in the show ring, is understood: All have lists of national, regional and class A champion show horses to their credit. For breeders who want what each has to offer individually, they represent solid resources of quality. For others, the excitement will be the interweaving of their pedigrees, as each is bred to daughters of the other two. Even before Baske Afire came to Strawberry Banks in 2008, foals on the ground from mares of the farm’s bloodlines indicated that the nicks would be golden.

Briefly, the components of the formula are: Bask Afire (Afire Bey V x Mac Baske, by Baskevich), who represents both sides of the *Bask/Afire Bey V combination; Hey Hallelujah, a son of Huckleberry Bey (sire of Afire Bey V) and Hallelujah Bask (a *Bask daughter), for another version of the select cross; and A Temptation (Tempter x A Love Song, by *Bask), whose three reflections of *Bask reinforce that stallion’s influence at a time when it is moving farther back in most pedigrees, but without any Huckleberry Bey/Afire Bey V blood—which enables him to be especially useful on mares of that heritage. Each stallion offers other desirable qualities as well. A Temptation’s dam line is known for its extreme elegance and beauty (his grandam *Elkana, was U.S. National Champion Mare and U.S. National Top Ten in English Pleasure), while Hey Hallelujah’s dam was U.S. National Champion in Park and Baske Afire’s was U.S. National Reserve Champion in English Pleasure. Time and again, down through the generations, all of these bloodlines have been proven to work well with each other. They personify the Strawberry Banks slogan, “English is spoken here.” The element of refined beauty evident in each stallion and his offspring also is in the genes.
Baske Afire Baske Afire’s record since his first foals arrived in 2002 has been nothing short of spectacular. By 2004, he was consistently ranking high on the Arabian Horse Times sire lists, his status achieved not by just one or two well-decorated representatives, but by a growing collection that excelled at their jobs. As of August, 2009, his record as a sire includes 92 purebred champions, 20 of whom are national winners (with 46 national wins). This year, before Canadian and U.S. Nationals and the lucrative fall futurities, Baske Afire’s record of champions had expanded by 21 new names. In particular, horsemen are watching Baske Allience, a 5-year-old son of Miss Allience, by the Strawberry Banks-bred Allience, a half-brother to A Temptation. In May, Bask Allience was named Ohio Buckeye Champion in English Pleasure Junior Horse, showing with Jim Stachowski, and then went on to reaffirm that placing by winning the title at Region 14.
Buckeye Champion English Pleasure Junior Horse, who went on to two Youth National Championships in English pleasure this year. With the Polish/domestic mare Brooklyn Bey, a daughter of NV Beau Bey (by Bey Shah), the result was Mariachi WA, a 2007 double-national top ten futurity colt who won a regional championship and reserves at Scottsdale and the Ohio Buckeye this year in country English pleasure junior horse. Bred to American Saddlebreds, Baske Afire’s list of Half-Arabian winners is almost too long to calculate. Thus far in 2009, he has 20 new champion Half-Arabians, for a total of 99 Half-Arabian champions, 29 Half-Arabian national winners (with 91 national wins). This year’s new national titlists include In the Line Afire, Gift of Grace and Somethin Special. To date, his biggest Half-Arabian national winner is She Be Adiva KBS (x She Be Jammin, by Phi Slama Jama), with 20 national awards, including seven national and reserve national championships. Another well-known name is GA
“Bask Allience has an interesting pedigree,” Stachowski notes. “He has motion and prettiness all put together, and it is a great package for English pleasure. I think he has the potential to win junior English pleasure at the Nationals.” The cross of Baske Afire on the *Bask/Strawberry Banks blood is only part of the story; statistics indicate that the stallion works well with many of the old Polish bloodlines. In recent years, daughters of *El Ghazi have been noticeably successful with Baske Afire: Sin City and Card Shark (x Las Veghaz), along with MBF Burning Springs (x Mahalin), all have won national or Scottsdale titles in the English division over the past two years. Another example of Baske Afire on Polish lines is The Way She Moves (x Heavenlie, granddaughter of the pure Polish, *Bask son Promotion). A crowd sensation at last year’s U.S. Nationals when she won Country English Pleasure Junior Horse, The Way She Moves is now 6, and has reinvented herself as an amateur horse, with championships at Scottsdale and the Youth Nationals. While Baske Afire’s success seems assured with Polish bloodlines, it also has extended in a wide range of other directions. Matched with a daughter of Canadian Love—a decidedly non-Polish background—he sired Sommelier, 2008 Ohio

Clio Dulaine, a National Show Horse National Champion and U.S. National Reserve Champion as a yearling. Amazingly, all those performance titles—while important in the English legacy of Strawberry Banks—do not reveal the whole story for Baske Afire. He was added to the stallion roster at the farm not just for his athletic talent, but also for his beauty and type, as one hallmark of the farm through its history has been to maintain the Arabian look. Baske Afire is no exception. “At this point,” reveals bloodstock research by specialist Christy Egan, “most of Baske Afire’s champions at the major shows are divided equally between halter and performance, though nearly all of his performance champions are in the English and country English pleasure divisions.”
Hey Hallelujah While Baske Afire burst on the Arabian scene as a breeding stallion, both of Strawberry Banks’ other stallions first served notice of their quality in the show ring. In a seven-year career, Hey Hallelujah won six national championships, one reserve and three top tens, stretching from halter (U.S. National and Canadian National Top Ten Stallion) to English pleasure (U.S. and Canadian National Champion) to pleasure driving (Canadian and twiceU.S. National Champion, as well as U.S. National Champion AAOTD). For those who were there, the most memorable was the historic 2001 U.S. National Championship in English Pleasure, when Hey Hallelujah and stablemate A Temptation brought the house down at Albuquerque in a blockbuster class. From 25 entries, Hey Hallelujah was chosen champion, with A Temptation reserve—an achievement that in the Arabian breed belongs only to Strawberry Banks.
“Hey Hallelujah is still the only horse who has won the Triple Crown (Scottsdale and the Canadian and U.S. Nationals) in both driving and open English,” says Brian Murch, who showed the stallion to those victories. “When I think of him, I think of heart—that’s the kind of horse he is. Even today, he’s like that. You could ride him and win in the show ring today. He’s still very young at heart.” At this point in his career, Hey Hallelujah is the sire of 84 purebred and Half-Arabian champions, 18 national winners (with a collective total of 87 national wins), and seven national and reserve national champions. Among the best known have been Hey Its My Toi (x Jatoi, by Matoi), with 19 national awards—including championships—in the English pleasure division; and Silent Steel (x Mi Sara Lee, by Le Dez), with 12 national titles, the latest in country pleasure driving. In the Half-Arabian ranks, he has offered such standouts as Hey Bey Be (x Scarlets Swirling Ember), whose 18 national titles include halter and country English pleasure championships.

Hey Hallelujah
Baske Afire
New regional titlists in 2009 have included Emannuel, The Hurricane, QH Tallulah, Top Flyer, Emericca, Hey Bombay, and Morningsky Hallelujah. In Half-Arabians, new regional success stories include REA Hey Look Me Over, Larda Mercy WH, and REA Heymsingridbrgman. Overall, Hey Hallelujah’s best cross has been with *Bask-bred mares. “If you look at the amount of mares that he has bred and the amount of winners he has had, the percentages are unbelievable,” Murch observes. One of Hey Hallelujah’s most consistent nicks has been daughters of Tempter, Strawberry Banks’ intensely *Bask-bred stallion emeritus, also the sire of A Temptation. That cross has yielded seven champions over the years. Particularly valuable has been the match of Hey Hallelujah with the farm’s unanimous U.S. National Champion Mare (and U.S. National Champion in English Pleasure Junior Horse) Ericca, which has resulted in four champion foals: Emannuel was 2008 U.S. National Top Ten Country English Pleasure Junior Horse, and his full siblings Evangelica, Enchanting Love, and Emericca have accounted for regional titles. One of the latest winners from the Hey Hallelujah/Tempter combination is QH Tallulah (x Especialley, by Tempter), 2009 Ohio Buckeye Champion Country English Pleasure Junior Horse, as well as a regional reserve champion. Other demonstrated *Bask-line nicks have come with daughters of Gdansk, Le Dez, Bask Flame, Promotion, Baskevich, Negatraz, First Class and Baske-Tez. He has also proven successful with the total outcross of High Hopes (Egyptian/domestic) blood, through that stallion’s sons MC Sir Hope and MC Hopes Fire, and also with daughters of the remarkable Barbary, whose sire line is related to that of Hey Hallelujah.
A Temptation
“The majority of the time, Hey Hallelujah will help a mare who needs shape to her neck,” Murch says. “He certainly produces quality, and he also puts a really expressive eye on his foals. The biggest thing about him was that as much as he has won, he has such a big heart. You see that in his babies too—they give you the ability to do what you want with them because they are so willing to go forward, as he was.” A Temptation The power of A Temptation’s pedigree cannot be overstated. All of his grandparents are national titlists, and three—Cognac, *Bask and *Elkana—are national champions; the fourth, Tonki, was national top ten in formal driving and combination. Two of his greatgrandams, U.S. National Champion *Gdynia and U.S. National Reserve Champion *Boltonka, not only topped the charts but also went on to found national-winning dynasties. A Temptation is a three-quarter-brother to the unanimous U.S. National Champion Mare and U.S. National Champion English Pleasure Junior Horse Ericca (Tempter x Elegant Crystal, a daughter of *Aladdinn and *Elkana), as well as a half-brother to Allience, a multi-national champion in park, and To Love Again, a national titlist in English pleasure and park. A Temptation could have entered the breeding ranks solely on the credentials of his pedigree, but instead, he trotted into the show ring and proved himself there. In an eight-year show career, the elegant grey stallion was seven times a national champion or reserve. In 2000, he was named U.S. National Champion English Pleasure Junior Horse unanimously; the following year, he placed reserve in the open championship to his stablemate, Hey Hallelujah, and the year after that, won the title on his own. A year later, he took on pleasure driving and picked up a U.S. National Reserve Championship, then came back in 2005 to be named unanimous

U.S. National Champion in the division. That same year he won the amateur driving championship, showing with his owner, Barbara Chur. He closed an illustrious career with the U.S. National Reserve Championship in park. Brian Murch remembers his first impression of A Temptation, the year the stallion won the U.S. National Championship for English Pleasure Junior Horses. “I judged him at the Ohio Buckeye,” Murch says. “Tim Shea had him there, and I remember thinking, ‘For the Arabian breed, this horse is Michael Jordan.’ When I watched again at the Nationals, I literally had goose bumps. He won on all five cards, unanimously, because he was such an amazing individual—he was so loose, front and behind— and what was even better was that when you looked at him going down the rail, he was so clearly an Arabian. He had so much type, especially his beautiful tail carriage and big, soft eyes.” Over the years, having been associated personally with A Temptation, Murch has come to admire the stallion even more. “Barbara has always said, and I agree: When A Temptation trots, he is so light and soft on his feet that you can barely hear him. He’s like Michael Jordan driving down to dunk the basketball—it is all so effortless for him because he is so much more athletic than most. He is one of the most supple horses that you could possibly ever imagine, and as a sire, his babies are like that. They are easy to train because they are very supple and very fluid. And they’re pretty doing it.” A Temptation’s best known winning foal to date is Chaparral DGL (x Chamorrita Afire, by Afire Bey V), who first came to national attention in 2005, when he won the U.S. National English Pleasure Futurity, then went on to win the title of U.S. and Canadian National Champion Junior Horse. Two years later, he added a U.S. National Top Ten in Park, showing with Joel Kiesner. A brief scan of other winners by A Temptation reveals the solid show contenders HS Justatemptation and Tempting Tango in English pleasure and country English pleasure; Solarra in western pleasure; WWW Breathless and Starze N Stripes in hunter pleasure; Temper Tantrum in native costume; and Tempting Fate in sport horse halter and under saddle. From limited breeding for Half-Arabians, he is the sire of HS Liberty (x Pilenora), 2008 U.S. National Top Ten Half-Arabian English Pleasure Junior Horse. At the 2009 regionals, new names added to the A Temptation list of purebred champions included D M Fool Proof and Proficient Fire.

Trainer Kevin Price, who is developing an A Temptation 4-year-old now, is pleased with the experience. “Just Tempted is very trainable and easy to be around,” he says. “He has a real bouncy kind of attitude, like his dad—he wants to do his job every day. I think he is a really nice show horse.” Just Tempted debuted in English pleasure with four straight wins, and is looking forward to a career either there or in country English pleasure. The sire of nine national winners and 31 champions, A Temptation has found his best results with mares of Bay El Bey and Huckleberry Bey heritage, siring national winners with daughters of Afire Bey V, Huckleberry Bey, Hucklebey Berry and Barbary. He is particularly successful with Afire Bey V daughters, as he has no Huckleberry Bey in his pedigree, providing a classic outcross opportunity. Like both Baske Afire and Hey Hallelujah, he also does excellent work with *Bask-bred mares, offering several national champions along those lines. Among the best nicks there has been the Cytosk line of *Bask blood. In some cases, a whiff of Russian influence has proved a productive match with the snow-white stallion. Strawberry Banks— A Role In The Arabian Horse Industry In the opening decade of the millennium, a new Strawberry Banks Farm has emerged. Its breeding program is stronger than ever; its commitment to the breed, long expressed through years of service to the Arabian Horse Trust and other organizations, has become even more comprehensive. Already, Barbara Chur has been instrumental in the Arabian English Performance Association, and she is sponsoring incentives for owners and breeders in the Strawberry Banks program as well. One of Chur’s guiding principles has been the desire to encourage the breeding and showing of Arabian horses. The farm has established the private futurity Trot To The Gold, totaling $330,000, which awards payments to owners, breeders and trainers of foals by A Temptation, Hey Hallelujah and Baske Afire. The futurity is comprised of two divisions. The first is available for 3-year-old performance horses, both purebred and Half-Arabian, at the U.S. Nationals in the English Pleasure Futurity, while the second spotlights classes for yearlings at the U.S. Nationals and the purebred-only Arabian English Performance Association class at the Ohio Buckeye. The farm also offers a special program of three months’ training at reduced rates for horses by Baske Afire, Hey Hallelujah and A Temptation, with the aim of evaluating each youngster and beginning its development for the future. A bargain for horse
owners, it also allows Strawberry Banks to learn more about the various crosses to the farm’s stallions.
stepped onto the world stage. Now, breeders look for the next dominant English sire.
Finally, in honor of her late husband—and in a gesture of support for the enjoyment of Arabians—Barbara Chur annually sponsors the Neil M. Chur Memorial Award, which presents a check for $5,000 to the winner of the English Pleasure AOTR 40 and Over class at the U.S. Nationals.
Will the Arabian horse industry see the like of *Bask and Afire Bey V again? Yes. How will that be achieved? By combining the best of three touchstone stallions. It is already happening. A forecast of the future is available every year in the futurity and junior horse classes, and in 2008, the story was unfolding. In the Country English Pleasure Junior Horse class, five out of the top ten horses—including champion The Way She Moves—were by Strawberry Banks stallions. In the English Pleasure Futurity, an astounding five of the top ten, including champion KD Kontagious and reserve champion Glitterati, were by Strawberry Banks’ Baske Afire. By anyone’s standards, that is a spectacular debut in history. ■
Looking Ahead Over the past few years, Barbara Chur carefully has restructured the farm that she and her late husband, Neil, founded. In more than three decades of Arabian ownership, the pair had observed the history that was happening around them. They lived through the high-dollar heydays and then the low spirits that followed the tax reforms of 1986, and they continued their support of the Arabian breed by enjoying their national champions in halter and the English pleasure division. For Barbara, the experience always had revolved around her day-to-day enjoyment of the horses for their personalities—from the late nights in the foaling stalls, to watching Brian Murch train their powerhouse show string, to afternoons observing the mares and foals lazing in the sun. From that involvement, after Neil’s death in 2005, came her commitment to the future. The arrival of Baske Afire in 2008 has added another dimension to the farm’s already formidable breeding program. For Murch, Baske Afire’s qualities strengthen and reinforce the attributes of Hey Hallelujah and A Temptation in such a way as to lift the whole program to another level. “He just seems to exceed ‘the stretch limit’ in a horse,” the trainer marvels. “He brings in more size and length of leg, and he has great strength. He has so many characteristics of the way the *Bask horses were.” The Arabian industry is different today from what it was nearly 50 years ago, when *Bask came on the scene— different even from when Afire Bey V and the other great Varian stallions

Carol Curran of Peach Creek Farms began breeding Arabian horses in 1978, and it is her passion. Carol's main focus since that time has been breeding beautiful English pleasure horses, which earnestly began after purchasing the mare Basks Delight at a Lasma sale. Under the guidance of Dr. Eugene LaCroix and Dick & Kay Patterson, Carol learned about pedigrees and the valuable lines from Poland; what bloodlines mixed best; and what to be careful not to do when breeding Arabians. Carol added the beautiful Ariston daughter Aristo Brocade to her breeding program, infusing the bloodlines of Bask, Ariston, Comet, Arex, and Cytrys. She now has offspring that carry the blood of Aladdinn, Afire Bey V, Medalion, Monopolii, Baske Afire, SF Specs Shocwave, The Nobelest and SF Aftershoc.
