One of the greatest things about 2021 is that, despite a very challenging 2020, the Arabian horse community and industry is thriving! Foals are arriving and people are loving returning to the show ring. That means that it’s important to consider the “business end” of your involvement, and in an industry with many ways to get your word out, I’d like to give you a quick update on what we have to offer and why AHT is one-stop shopping for your advertising and marketing needs. We are a full-service multi-media company focused on our community. We provide not only the top advertising designers in the industry, but also sophisticated website design, video production, brochures, email blasts and more, all from a staff that understands your look and message. Just as critically, AHT also provides an engine that drives interest. Our large digital platform takes our readers around the world. We are onsite at top events not just with our marketing representatives, but with news, photographs, video interviews and more. (If you haven’t caught Kameron Kicklightner’s interviews—and hilarious Useless Trivia segments—then I highly recommend you do (and just to be fair, the “Useless” in trivia’s title is misleading; I usually learn a lot!). Meanwhile, on our Facebook page, we host informative discussions on our breed, such as its history and current issues, sometimes in such engaging formats as Jeopardy competitions. We do all this because we love our Arabians, but we understand that the community is more than the horses. It is also our friends and the camaraderie we share with each other. Arabian horses are my passion, as they are for many of you. We want to see everyone succeed in their equine ventures, and our designers and marketers are here to help you do it on all levels.

WHAT IS A SEEMINGLY SMALL DETAIL THAT YOU APPRECIATE SEEING IN THE RING? LORI CONWAY: A smile. LAURA GAULT: A nice and neat hair bun. MARTHA RATTNER: Polished boots and polished bits. LESLIE CONNOR: When I am judging in-hand classes, two very small details, neither one of which affects my placings at all, but do take a tiny bit away from the overall picture are: chestnuts (on the legs, not the color!) that need peeling, and matter in the corner of the eyes. Most horses are groomed to perfection these days, and I appreciate the care taken to not overlook these small details!

Lori Conway

MYRON KRAUSE: Promptness. STELLA PRESCOTT: Polished boots; and to make sure that the bottom of your boots have been wiped off before entering the room. NANCY SEYFRIED: Impeccable turnout of both horse and rider. DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: Properly fitting tack. A fancy bridle that is too big or improperly adjusted detracts from both a good picture and a smooth performance. ANNE JUDD: An exhibitor who is enjoying the competition because that’s what it’s all about. No fake smiles but just pleasant; not a “deer in the headlights” look!

Martha Rattner Ar abian Horse Times | 22 | Volume 52, No. 1

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE(S) TO SEE IN THE SHOW RING? LORI CONWAY: It’s not a pet peeve per se’, but a suggestion for every exhibitor: use your corners and as much rail space as you can to give the judge the best view possible. By squaring your corners, or by going deep into the corner and coming out in a bit of a diamond shape, this will be a way to use the ring to your best advantage. There is a respectful zone that should be considered when showing. LAURA GAULT: Coaching so loud on the rail that it is distracting to the judges. MARTHA RATTNER: Dirty boots. LESLIE CONNOR: In the in-hand classes, I have two pet peeves: 1). when the handler circles and circles his or her horse at the canter when they should be trotting, and 2). seeing excessive grease around the eyes and on the muzzle. MYRON KRAUSE: I don’t think I have “pet peeves,” I have things I don’t like, such as disrespect.

Laura Gault

STELLA PRESCOTT: Posting at the canter. NANCY SEYFRIED: Unpolished boots and poor turnout. DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: Aggressive corrections, especially when the issue was caused by conflicting aids of the rider. An empathic and confident rider can handle whatever comes up in a clear and fair way without getting overly strong with the aids. ANNE JUDD: A rider that continues to ride on top of me instead of using the entire arena, mostly the rail. Also, since I’m an instructor too, no knee contact tops the list!

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT EXHIBITORS TAKING EXTRA LAPS AFTER THE LINEUP HAS BEEN CALLED?

Myron Krause

LORI CONWAY: No class was ever won by being the last one to line-up, but I have seen a few that have lost it. You must know when to quit. LAURA GAULT: It doesn’t bother me if it is not excessive. MARTHA RATTNER: I think this depends a lot on the class. Generally, if I am calling the class, I am done judging when I say line up. I might watch and I might not, but one thing is for certain, nothing I see will make me change my mind. Showing horses is entertainment, so I think it’s great for exactly that reason. The words “line up” mean done judging, so unless it is illegal, anything I see after that will not change a number on my card. MYRON KRAUSE: They are usually grandstanding to the audience if judges quit judging or turn their card in, it will limit it. If the exhibitor continues, it is disrespectful.

Stella Prescott

STELLA PRESCOTT: Extra laps I would consider them not following directions and would be possibility flip-flopping some placings. NANCY SEYFRIED: We don’t see this at our hunter shows, so it would be out of the ordinary for me. DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: In dressage, most of our judging is done with only one rider in the ring at a time with a clear start and finish, so this is not a common problem that I see. But for a group class following the directions of the ring steward or judge, promptly, definitely makes a positive impression. ANNE JUDD: It is time consuming, and I am finalizing my card, not watching the riders intently, so it is wasted on me! Also, if it is done for entertainment to the crowd, that exhibitor might wish he had those two extra laps in him still if a work off is called, or on championship day! Ar abian Horse Times | 23 | Volume 52, No. 1

WHAT STANDS OUT TO YOU AS A GREAT PERFORMANCE/ PRESENTATION? LORI CONWAY: A rider that looks confident and makes it look easy will always stands out. Now, it may not be going well, but the “fake it till you make it” never hurts. LAURA GAULT: The rider looking like they are having fun and confident. MARTHA RATTNER: The performances and presentations that I remember as the very best all have one thing in common and that is HARMONY. The riders and handlers become invisible and all you see is the horse. The cues given are undetectable because you don’t see them. Horse and human are so in tune that the horse performs seemingly without the human. The result is you remember the horse and you refer to the horse but never the handler/rider. I’ve been around awhile so I have a long list of the horses I’ve witnessed in the ring over the years that were presented in just that manner. A few examples would be SX Bint Cobah, shown by Skip Carpenter; Allience+//, shown by Peter Stachowski; and Kajora, shown by Ray LaCroix.

Leslie Connor

LESLIE CONNOR: I love to see a halter horse who has lots of presence when entering the ring and appears to be naturally animated with a high tail carriage and a happy expression. And, during the stand-up, I don’t want to see any signs of fear or intimidation. Ideally, the horse should really show himself without a lot of assistance from his handler. MYRON KRAUSE: Precision, accuracy, and excitement. STELLA PRESCOTT: I want to see clean tack, horses, and riders. Mostly I want to see the rider making decisions. If the rider makes a mistake, I want to see them take action not to repeat the same mistake. I want to know they are thinking about what they are doing. I also like to see riders treat their horse like a teammate, not a robot. NANCY SEYFRIED: A well thought out ride. DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: A smooth forward-thinking ride that shows attention to the correct basics. Clear rhythm in all gaits, a supple relaxed horse, accepting the contact with a supple closed mouth, impulsion, and straightness.

Ann Judd

ANNE JUDD: Great ring generalship with a rider showing himself/herself in equitation with confidence, correct form, and top showmanship skills. In performance I prefer the same thing, but rider form is not critiqued unless it affects the horse’s performance!

IF A HORSE MAKES A MISTAKE BECAUSE OF AN EVENT OUTSIDE OF THE RING (IE. CHILD HANGING OVER THE RAIL, GARBAGE CAN GETTING KNOCKED OVER) DO YOU TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION? WHY OR WHY NOT? LORI CONWAY: Yes, of course. It is a judge’s job to consider everything that happens and then decide what the outcome will be.

STELLA PRESCOTT: It would depend on what class I’m judging. Most of the time I try not to take off too much for it.

LAURA GAULT: Absolutely! We have all had this happen before and exhibitors work too hard to have something totally out of their control ruin their chances if they are having a stellar ride.

NANCY SEYFRIED: Usually not so much. Unless the horse spooks at something very minor or is generally fresh.

MARTHA RATTNER: Absolutely not, unless the horse becomes a mistake because of it. Then I would have to say, “come back another day.”

DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: If there is a brief momentary loss of attention clearly due to an outside event, I may forgive it. If the reaction is ongoing or repeated, that will be taken into account in the score.

MYRON KRAUSE: If there is outside influence that adversely influences one’s performance that they had no control over, I would not fault the rider.

ANNE JUDD: I do consider it if I see it happen. I can even have my announcer correct the situation, especially if it is causing continuous trouble or danger.

Ar abian Horse Times | 24 | Volume 52, No. 1

DO YOU FEEL ATTIRE CAN DISTRACT FROM YOUR HORSE/PERFORMANCE? WHAT IS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON BEING PROPERLY SUITED FOR COMPETITION? WHAT THINGS DO YOU TYPICALLY FIND DISTRACTING? LORI CONWAY: Yes, attire can distract, but if the outfit is clean and tidy and falls within the rules, it is fine with me. Most distracting, however, is crooked numbers. LAURA GAULT: Too much glitz and glam can be distracting. I like for the horse to be the eye catcher and I appreciate outfits that complement the horse. I do think that exhibitors should dress appropriately for each division. It is a horse show, however, and part of the fun is dressing up, so I do always have that in mind. MARTHA RATTNER: I am a traditional person as a rule. However, I’ve never been afraid to stand out in a crowd. So, when I’m judging, I judge the horses. I have seen some wild clothing choices over the years. It keeps things interesting and entertaining. MYRON KRAUSE: It’s a show, not a leisurely casual ride in the park; come prepared for competition and look the part. Most distracting, funny you asked, is addressed in your next question, trainers yelling. STELLA PRESCOTT: If it’s bling and distracting, then I would consider it a fault. Helmets with bling belts with bling. Non-traditional jacket colors. NANCY SEYFRIED: A huge distraction for me and I consider it disrespectful, is unpolished boots, and a general “messy” appearance. DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: Any equipment and outfit that fits within the rules and is clean and well-fitted is fine with me. While fancy attire can certainly enhance the overall look and impression, in the end, I am judging the performance of the horse and rider. ANNE JUDD: Yes, attire may distract, such as things that blow or shake, like hair ribbons or loose hair! Too much fringe on a western outfit or bright coats and light suits do get my attention, which could be good or bad, depending on the performance since I can see them easily.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TRAINERS COACHING FROM THE RAIL? LORI CONWAY: Be respectful of others and try not to educate the judges on the pitfalls of your rider or horse and draw attention to their negatives. Keep it fun for everyone. LAURA GAULT: I mentioned that this is a pet peeve of mine. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with coaching from the rail, as long as it is not too loud and distracting. MARTHA RATTNER: I think growing up around the Saddlebred world kept me immune to over-the-rail coaching. It was just part of what we did at shows. Today, I think it is one of the things we should strive to get rid of.

Debbie Rodriguez

MYRON KRAUSE: Years ago, excessive loud coaching was penalized by the judge, I wish they would reinstitute that rule. STELLA PRESCOTT: Keep it quiet. Don’t let me hear you. I feel strongly about coaches who give a signal for the posting diagonal or the canter lead. I can hear you and consider it coaching from the rail. I will take points off. If your student doesn’t know these two things, then they’re not ready to be in the show ring. NANCY SEYFRIED: Don’t coach from the rail. DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: In the dressage ring, coaching from outside the ring is called unauthorized assistance and clearly a reason for elimination. I do not hesitate to enforce the rule when needed. ANNE JUDD: Keep it up! Makes my job easier hearing your rider is on the wrong lead or diagonal, or she needs to drop his nose, etc.! Ar abian Horse Times | 25 | Volume 52, No. 1

Nancy Seyfried

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE GOOD SHOW RING ETIQUETTE? LORI CONWAY: The ability to show their horse and be respectful of their fellow competitors and remain poised when things are not going as planned. LAURA GAULT: Being polite to your fellow competitors in and out of the show ring. Try to watch out for each other so everyone can have their best rides. MARTHA RATTNER: I think exhibitors need to ride the whole ring. I like to see riders show a horse to its best advantage by putting the horse anywhere in the ring where they look the best. Some passes on the rail, some right up the middle on a track that makes them look good. My job is to judge them, not hunt for them. I try to judge the whole ring and not miss any action, but feel it’s the exhibitor’s job to present what they’ve got. MYRON KRAUSE: Politeness, considerate of others. STELLA PRESCOTT: Don’t crowd other riders. Use all parts of the ring. Make sure the judge can see you. If the judge is sitting so she/he can’t see you if you ride the rail on their side, try taking the quarterline to stay off the rail. If you must pass another horse, pass wide. NANCY SEYFRIED: Staying well-spaced from the other exhibitors. Promptness to the ring when your class is called. DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: Present your horse to your best ability while still accommodating other riders fairly. ANNE JUDD: “Do unto others what you would have them do to you!” I also love this saying … “Hang your friendship on the gatepost as you enter the ring, pick it up on your way out! It’s your ring to show in!”

CHEWING GUM IN CLASS, TACK THAT ISN’T CLEAN, POOR GROOMING, DISTRACTING ATTIRE, NOT UTILIZING THE ENTIRE ARENA. PUT THESE THINGS IN ORDER FROM YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE TO THE LEAST. LORI CONWAY: If you don’t utilize the entire arena and your tack is dirty; if your horse is poorly groomed and you are wearing distracting attire while you are chewing gum, I will be able to see it well, because you will be riding so close to me, so please don’t. LAURA GAULT: Chewing gum, poor grooming, tack that isn’t clean, not utilizing the entire arena, distracting attire. MARTHA RATTNER: #1Poor Grooming, #2 Not utilizing the whole arena, #3 distracting attire. I can’t rank tack that isn’t clean and chewing gum, because both of those are straight up disrespectful to a judge. MYRON KRAUSE: 1). not utilizing the entire arna, 2). poor grooming, 3). distracting attire, 4). chewing gum in class, 5). tack that isn’t clean. STELLA PRESCOTT: Poor grooming, distracting attire, tack that isn’t clean, chewing gum, not utilizing the entire arena. NANCY SEYFRIED: All of the above! DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: Poor grooming, dirty tack, not utilizing the entire arena, and chewing gum. ANNE JUDD: These are all big pet peeves, almost on an equal standing, but if I must: 1). poor grooming, 2). dirty tack, 3). not using the entire ring, 4). chewing gum, 5). inappropriate attire (not improper attire, which could cause dismissal).

WHAT AND WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST OFFICIAL JUDGING ASSIGNMENT? WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT IT? LORI CONWAY: It was a direct flight on a small prop plane and my luggage did not make the flight. Wheatland is a very small town with just a Kmart, and I had to go to the thrift store to find clothes for the weekend. Since then, I have never flown to a horse show without either a carry on or wearing suitable clothes I could judge in if necessary. LAURA GAULT: If I remember correctly, it was in Utah and what stands out in my mind is there were TONS of reiners. I sharpened up on my working western skills very quickly! MARTHA RATTNER: Salem, Oregon 1981. The first class I judged was won by Jerry Sindt. There was this tiny tot showing with Chris Bickford named Theresa Schimmel. Ray Fletcher’s daughter was a super talented youth rider and when this class called Western Riding came up, I was able to follow that logic and picked LaRae to be the winner. According to Ray, I got it right. LESLIE CONNOR: My very first USEF (then AHSA) show was in Lawton, Oklahoma, in 1976. I was assisted by the great horsewoman, Mary Glass, of Tulsa, and, as I recall, it all went quite smoothly! At that time, I never would have dreamed how long a career I would have judging, and that it would take me all over the world! MYRON KRAUSE: It was about 45 years ago, and I remember it being wet, dirty, cold and long. STELLA PRESCOTT: I think my first official judging was in South Carolina. I remember being very nervous about making a mistake on my cards. I also worried about being fast enough in judging flat classes.

Ar abian Horse Times | 26 | Volume 52, No. 1

NANCY SEYFRIED: I don’t really remember my first assignment. Officiating at new venues is always a thrill. I find each job very exciting. I love my job! DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: It has been so many years now, that it is hard to remember the exact start. Later, as I became a USEF Dressage Judge, the main thing I remember is finding out how much attention you need to pay to every horse and rider all day long. It takes a bit of time to develop that skill. And judges are human too. ANNE JUDD: I could say Rock Creek, which was my first big show to judge and the ring in which I grew up… but truthfully, Oldham Co. Fair, LaGrange, KY. It was so long ago (almost 50 years ago) I don’t remember the year! After a few days of nerves, I had settled in and was proceeding quite nicely (my opinion), when the unimaginable happened. We were located right next to the State Penitentiary and suddenly search lights glared and loud sirens blared. There was an escapee! The spectators all went and locked themselves in their cars! Honestly, it was forever ago, and I don’t remember what I did! I do remember it was very scary!

WHAT COULD YOU SHARE TO ENCOURAGE MORE PEOPLE TO PURSUE GETTING THEIR JUDGES CARD?

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT JUDGING YOUTH/ MID SUMMER NATIONALS?

LORI CONWAY: I began judging as a kid in 4-H, so it was a lifelong passion for me. It is not an easy path to get your judges card, but it is very worthwhile when you do get it. It is intense and a huge responsibility, but it is also very fulfilling. On top of getting the best view in the house seeing so many incredible horses, judging has afforded me the opportunity to travel the world and meet many wonderful people, and for that, I am very grateful.

LESLIE CONNOR: I believe that judging horses is always an honor and a privilege. I approach every show with the same mindset: be well-prepared, so that I can do the very best job I possibly can. And, I have to say, I truly love what I do!

LAURA GAULT: If you have a passion to judge, go for it! It is one of my favorite things to do and it has been well worth all the time and dedication it took to become a judge.

NANCY SEYFRIED: Having the responsibility of judging the best sport horses in the country! Seeing a new venue and seeing some great performances!

STELLA PRESCOTT: The industry needs new judges. It is important for our industry to have people get involved in shaping the sport, and judging is a great way of doing just that. I think becoming a judge is a great way to stay current in the industry. It is fun and you get to meet a lot of wonderful people.

DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: I am looking forward to seeing the quality of riding and horsemanship that will be presented through all levels.

NANCY SEYFRIED: I love judging. I know it’s not for everyone, but if you enjoy it, it is a wonderful profession! DEBBIE RODRIGUEZ: Going through the process of judge’s education is very worthwhile. The knowledge you gain as a judge will help you as a competitor and coach. Seeing things from the judge’s view may influence your training philosophy. Along the way you will meet so many kindred spirits and wonderful people. You will see so many interesting places. ANNE JUDD: I started judging as I believed it was a “give back” to the industry that supplied my career. I would still say that’s the best reason to judge, and I encourage knowledgeable horsemen to get their cards.

STELLA PRESCOTT: I am excited to see horse and riders in a different part of the country than where I normally judge.

ANNE JUDD: Although I grew up in the Saddlebred and Morgan world, for the past 20 years I have been an avid fan of the Arabian horse show world traveling to the World’s, Scottsdale and many regionals, as well as judging the National Show Horse finals twice! I love enjoying and learning about this historic breed and its wonderful owners and trainers! I have not been to Youth before. Over the years I have seen and actually taught some of these talented young riders, but what an honor it will be to see them all at one show where they are highlighted. It’s a great horse show concept I’d love to see in other breeds!

ANYTHING SPECIFIC YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE OR MENTION? LORI CONWAY: Have fun. Be thankful that you get to ride Arabian and Half-Arabian horses! We are all very lucky. LAURA GAULT: ENJOY THE RIDE! MARTHA RATTNER: Winning a National Championship is a joy and a privilege, but it is the performance that is most remembered that counts the most. In our history, there have been many incredible animals perform at the national level who were highly regarded and not forgotten that never won past the rank of top ten. I believe when you are showing, it’s important to make every person watching want to do what you are doing. n

Cover Story: Sabina Berglund … On The Verge Of A New Era BY SARAH JAYNE JOHNSON In her final year as a youth rider, Sabina Berglund is looking

lived close by, and it was just about as close to love at first sight

adulthood. Part of that includes making sure she enjoys every ride

notice that deep love,” says Sabina, “it just took my parents a little

forward to soaking in every last second before launching into full

and every show along the way with Stachowski Farm and her family. Competing with Sabina this year is her exceptional four-legged soul mate, EA Apollomalu (Troy) in Arabian Equitation, Show Hack and Country Pleasure Driving; Noble Bey CRF (Ace) in Arabian English Pleasure and Pleasure Driving;and MJM Hit Man (Hitman)

in Half-Arabian Equitation, Country Pleasure and Show Hack. Reminiscing on her previous years and most beloved memories

from Youth Nationals, Sabina shares, “There are two memories

that really stick out to me. My first year competing at Youth was in

2018. Despite not having any expectations except to go in, have fun, and get the feeling of how competitive it was, Troy and I ended up coming out with a reserve championship in the Arabian Country

Choice and I couldn’t have been more excited! Getting a set of

national roses with your heart horse is truly an incredible feeling. And in 2019, Ace and I showed in the Arabian English Pleasure

JOTR and won that class after only being together since February.

That class was such a rush, and I’ll never forget how much fun it was!” Sabina’s journey into horses is a little different from most. Like most young children, she always loved and had a fascination for

horses, however, her passion did not come to the forefront until she

visited her grandparents in the Czech Republic. Every summer, they would take her to see the breathtaking carriage horses that

as a person could get. “They (grandparents) were the first ones to longer to realize it. But once I started taking riding lessons, I was

hooked! My mom thought it would be a few lessons and we’d move on to the next thing, but that clearly never happened! It’s been an

incredible journey so far and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.” Beyond the show arena, Sabina is just as talented. In November

2018, she graduated high school early and worked on her

prerequisite courses for veterinary school. Despite the challenges of being one of the youngest in her classes, she’s excelling. Her goal

is to graduate vet school with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, specializing in sports medicine, followed up with a surgical residency to become an equine orthopedic surgeon. Her final goal?

Own her own hospital one day. She credits her future career goals

and aspirations in life to the lessons she’s learned as an equestrian. Horses consistently have been her motivation in many life tracks, but now are her focus and drive for her personal and career goals. Until then, Sabina’s short-term goals after graduating from Youth Nationals, include becoming the best rider she can be. “I

really want to work on finessing my skills and becoming a better rider in general,” she says. “There is so much to learn, and each trainer I work with is just so incredible at helping me expand

my knowledge on these amazing horses. Working with multiple breeds has definitely helped that, and I can’t wait to really step it up to get ready for the amateur divisions.”

Sabina made sure to emphasize a thank you for those who have supported her throughout her career. First and foremost, her parents who have

supported her every step of the way. Peter and Susan Witte for giving her the solid foundation in our industry, Josh Shino for helping her gain her confidence in the show arena, Jody LaSalle for her support in and out of the arena, and Nestor Gonzales for his help this year prepping Miss Berglund and her horses for Youth Nationals.

Life is … Life is an opportunity, benefit from it. Life is beauty, admire it. Life is bliss, taste it. Life is a dream, realize it. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is a duty, complete it. Life is a game, play it. Life is a promise, fulfill it. Life is sorrow, overcome it. Life is a song, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it. Life is a tragedy, confront it. Life is an adventure, dare it. Life is luck, make it. Life is too precious, do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it.

F

Positively Impacting People's Lives

rom a dream to help people and a passion for Arabian horses, Bay Area Equestrian Center evolved. Owner Lynn Almond has loved horses since she was a very young girl and was fortunate to have them at her family's home most of her life. She was introduced to the Arabian horse through trainer Kent Caldwell, and learned to train and show these amazing animals. The joy of giving riding lessons to all the neighbor kids allowed Lynn to work her way through Texas A&M doing the very same thing, along with training horses. After graduating, the dream to build Bay Area Equestrian Center was born, and she started construction on the facility after several years of working, designing and building a business plan; opening her doors in 1996. BAEC sits on 15 acres in Pearland, TX and is home to 70 horses. Its spacious indoor arena allows for year-round riding, training and lessons. The large riding academy introduces people to the Arabian horse and the Arabian show circuit through the national level, our show team's specialty. Currently, BAEC operates seven days a week, giving over 250 lessons per week using 20 lesson horses. Our goal? To build self-esteem and confidence in people by teaching them how to be the boss; empowering themselves through learning to ride Arabian horses. The BAEC team has witnessed our program change people's lives. All riders start at the foundation level where they learn the basics of balance and fundamentals of riding and controlling their horse. They learn horsemanship through riding, grooming, saddling and taking care of the horse. When ready, they graduate to group classes and private lessons. Here they learn how to steer around each other, perfecting their riding skills and having lots of fun. From this level, riders are able to choose if they have an interest in leasing a horse and moving towards the show program, or continue to just enjoy riding. Thousands of people have been introduced to riding and the Arabian horse at BAEC over the last 26 years. BAEC's show program is one of the finest in the country for the junior and amateur rider. Under the direction of head trainer Laurie Long and trainers Krista Wilkes and Mallory Harrell, BAEC has won hundreds of national championships, reserves and top tens. We strive to create the perfect combination of horse and rider who work successfully together, and we work hard to always emphasize that this sport is about setting goals and working towards accomplishing them. At BAEC, the emphasis is not on winning prizes, but on the process, which results in life lessons, the ability to have fun, and make lifelong friendships as well as winning championships. They discover what it's like to be part of a team and sportsmanship, by supporting one another in the stands and cheering each other on, learning not only what it takes to be a champion in the show ring, but in life!

L ocated in beautiful Bristol, Tennessee, just off Highway 421 w hich crosses South Holston L ake on a road known as “The Snake,” just driving to G arlands L td. is an experience in itself. Winding through National Forest and adorned by bikers, one will find the trout and y fishing in the area is unreal. The Bristol otor Speedway is within 0 minutes and the town of Bristol itself has great hotels and restaurants. Visiting G arlands can truly be a vacation for the whole family, and their crew is so welcoming. L ocated on 200 acres with 40 s talls, a covered round pen and a beautiful indoor arena, one can expect a laid back, family atmosphere. It is an atmosphere of inclusivity that Tommy and E rica’s clients have come to appreciate; each supportive of one another. All levels of involvement are welcome. Don’t own a horse? Don’t worry! E verybody has to start somewhere, and some people aren’t ready to own a horse yet. Starting with a good solid foundation in good horsemanship practices sets people up for becoming great riders in the future and it helps to have barn mates cheer each other on. G arlands welcomes everyone with open arms, even if you don’t want to ride but you love to be around horses ( they’ll let ya’ clean stalls) ! Horses are very nurturing for people to be around; it doesn’t matter if you’re hanging with them in the stalls or competing at shows. Whatever you want to do with them, the G arland team can help: lessons, leasing, showing, or finding the right horse for you. Whatever level customers need to start at, they can take you to where you want to finish. Tommy grew up around all kinds of horses, but because Arabian horses were smaller, and he was the smallest in his family, they were a good fit. But over time,” he shares, between falling in love with their personality, it just became about ‘ pretty.’ Arabian horses are some of the prettiest, in my opinion, and if you’re going to ride a horse, ride a pretty one.” When asked about his favorite at the farm, that answer needed little consideration. “That’s easy,” says Tommy, “’Ace The Wonder Horse.’ Holding Aces is one of the most interesting horses I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. He is curious, brave, willing and expressive. We instantly hit it off and when we had the amazing honor of a ride-off ( tiebreaker) at the Scottsdale show in the open Western Pleasure class in 2018 a nd won, it was in that moment that everyone else saw what I’ve always seen and known about this horse. He’s so special and I feel so lucky to have had the chance to get to know him and help bring out his best and give him an enjoyable experience while working together.” It isn t difficult, however, to list many more who fit that description at arlands. ast year when the non profit group BACA Bikers Against Child Abuse hosted an event at their barn, the kids were thrilled by the horses. “It was one of my best days,” reminisces Tommy. “E veryone seemed brightened by the horses, and I get to witness that thrill and joy over and over again as a horse trainer. It’s one of the best aspects of the job. A lot of people don’t seem to think horses have souls and experience the same emotions that we do, but they have good and bad days just like us and I think it’s one of the most interesting things about working with horses.” or more information on arlands td. follow them on ace oo or log on to www. ommy arland.com

Elizabeth Pizzonia & her team at Ocala Equestrian Academy are no strangers to Arabian horses. And because of them, neither are the hundreds of students who mount up each week at “OEA!” Ocala, Florida, is one of the most populated horse counties in the country; home to just about every breed you can think of. What lines every stall of Ocala Equestrian Academy are not Quarter Horses or Thoroughbreds ... but Arabians. Every lesson horse is an Arabian or Half-Arabian. Why? “There is no other breed I would consider,” says instructor/owner Elizabeth Pizzonia. With over 30 years’ experience, amassing over 30 U.S. National Championships throughout her career as a youth, amateur and professional trainer, Pizzonia shares, “When a person begins their experience with horses, it’s our job to have it be safe, fulfilling and fun! Many people have ‘fallen upon’ an Arabian horse by accident. There was one in their trail ride, or a friend of a friend had one. Our clients are well informed from the get-go that we choose to use Arabians in our lesson programs, then the horses basically explain why for themselves.” The OEA holds seasonal camps, group and private lessons, clinics and workshops; all for the opportunity to share the experience of the magical Arabian horse with those of all ages. OEA understands the great value in bringing new people to them ... and giving them the best experience they can. That’s the simple philosophy.

Choosing The Right Lesson Program By Elizabeth Pizzonia, owner of Ocala Equestrian Academy Photography by Lluvia Sommer “How do I find the right place to begin taking lessons?” It is the most important question when beginning your journey with the Arabian horse. Unfortunately, there is not one answer that makes a place the right choice, but a combination of things. This guide will help you make the best choice in reaching your personal equine goals and dreams. First, you must establish your personal goals within the horse world. Ask yourself,

Are you looking to become a master showman or enjoy the horse in a recreational fashion? Whatever your equine direction is, choose a facility that will help you reach your goals with a structured plan to guide the way.

The Instructor. A friendly, welcoming environment is key. Learning to ride is an enjoyable adventure and you want to make sure you are encouraged in your riding process. Make sure that there are opportunities for you to advance your skills which is very important to your success as a rider. Take the time to observe lessons. Is the instructor attentive to his/ her students? Listen to the teaching style. Instructors have many ways of teaching; make sure that the instructor you are considering teaches in a way you can resonate with. Often, a good riding instructor will have positive references/referrals and credentials. With any successful riding program, it is critical to teach new riders from the ground up. Remember, horses are not soccer balls that you can just stick in the corner until you are ready to play with it again. To become a successful horseman/ horsewoman, it is essential you learn how to completely care for your horse. Riders should learn the skills to properly care for their lesson horse, from feeding, cleaning and grooming, to tacking, sportsmanship and much more. Look for a program that will teach you these important skills.

Ar abian Horse Times | 14 | SE Experience 2021

Tour the facility. Something very important to every new rider is what kind of facility is offering riding lessons. Is this a professional equine facility promoting lessons? Set up a tour of the facilities you are considering. Look around and ask yourself, is this a safe and professional environment for lessons? Make sure there is a set arena for lessons, NOT an open field or poorly fenced area. Make sure lessons are done in a safely enclosed riding arena. A beginner rider will not advance properly or safely in wide open spaces that are not enclosed. A facility with a covered arena is a plus so inclement weather doesn’t cause unnecessary cancellations.

Ask what types of lessons are offered. Are group and private lessons available? Private lessons are great for one-on-one learning. Group lessons are a fun way to ride with others and learn new skills with multiple horses in the arena. Talk with your potential instructor and see what he/she suggests for you. If you choose a group lesson, make sure you are in a group of riders with similar riding experience. It is very frustrating for new riders to try and keep up with experienced riders in a group lesson. Ask how long the lessons are and the amount of time you are actually in the saddle. Is grooming, tacking and untacking part of the lesson?

Cost and inclusions. Riding horses is a commitment, be sure to talk with the instructor on lesson pricing. Ask if there are packages or discounts available. Check to make sure you know what’s included in your lesson package. Many facilities accept credit cards or similar forms of payment, however, be sure to discuss what type of payment is preferred and when you need to pay for your lessons.

Ar abian Horse Times | 15 | SE Experience 2021

Check the surroundings. Check the surroundings of the designated riding areas. You don’t want to see obstacles in the way (i.e. tractor equipment scattered around the arenas, rakes and brooms not properly stored, hoses laying around). These are important to the safety of your riding experience.

Ask to see the lesson horses You will also want to request a viewing of the lesson horses and ask how many are actively used in the program. It is extremely important to see that these horses are well taken care of. Do they look healthy and well groomed? Watch the horses used in lessons. A horse that is happy and bright will put forth a quality lesson, but a horse that is unhappy and sour will deliver a poor performance. It is so important to take care of these horses. They are the true TEACHERS and their well-being is very important.

Get started today! These are just a few tips to help you find the right place to begin your equine journey. Ultimately, you want to feel confident and comfortable as a new rider and expand your skills. Every second you spend with your new equine friend is creating a bond that has no limits. Enjoy the ride!

Alana Hasman

An Ambassador & Her Arabian Alana Hasman is a 10-year-old rider at the Ocala Equestrian Academy. What sets Alana apart from the other horse-crazy kids, belly-laughing around the barn, is her diagnosis of Limb Girdle Muscular dystrophy type 2i (LGMD). LGMD2i is a form of MD which refers to a group of conditions that cause weakness and wasting of the muscles in the shoulders and hips. “What the horses have given Alana is amazing,” says her mom, Anna. “She is supposed to wear support-type boots, yet she doesn’t, as riding dramatically has improved her legs. It has increased her core strength and stamina immensely ... not to mention her confidence! Before riding, she tried gymnastics and dance. but she couldn’t advance. Riding horses has leveled the playing field for her. “She has taken a few tumbles falling off a horse before, but she dusts herself off and gets back on. Liz says when you fall off you get the “Cowgirl” award, and she loves that because the other riders encourage her by telling her it’s ok! She gets back on and goes again! Riding horses has given her freedom she doesn’t get anywhere else.” Alana enjoys working with the other riders at the barn and is treated equally. She helps clean grooming areas, grooms horses and keeps those laughs going with the other riders. So ... when Alana is at the farm, she IS one of the other kids. The CureLGMD2i Foundation has appointed her as their new Junior Ambassador. Oh, and one day, intends to be a Top Ten Finalist at Youth Nationals!

The barn is supplemented by a covered, enclosed riding arena, as well as a bull pen, walker and turnouts. “We are where the agriculture – f armland – be gins, but if you go another two miles from us, you enjoy the convenience of restaurants and motels.” Close to town, but rural, too, ob and Caralyn are greeted by six or eight deer in the driveway every night. ecognized as Nationally accomplished and successful individuals, their teamwork makes them doubly formidable in the show ring. BC runs the full gambit in experiencing Arabian horses. Beginner to seasoned competitors, this farm welcomes newcomers to participate at any level and excels at really finding the custom fit for individual personalities. Whether you are a timid, first timer, or a thrill seeking adrenaline junkie, the team at BC will find you the right horse and expose you to the right environment to learn on it. The relationship between horse and rider is heavily respected here. It is important to the entire staff to nurture that. After all, when you leave the barn after your day with an Arabian horse, it is that you take with you for the rest of your week.

The team at BC work hard to bring each individual to its potential. As Caralyn puts it, Our best is the least we can do.” When a horse first arrives,” R ob explains, “we try to get an idea of what the expectations of the owner are. We then evaluate the horse to see if that horse can meet those expectations, so that we’re not completely out of balance with what the horse can do and what the owner thinks it can do.” R ob continues, “If it all seems workable, we start bringing the horse along as qui ckly as it can progress, and let the horse tell us how fast it can progress to that goal. We take each horse as an individual and make it the best that it can be.” ob and Caralyn take special pride in the care the horses receive. Because we have 55 stalls and no more, we feel like we can do qua lity work and give each horse a lot of personal time. E very horse gets out of its stall six days a week, whether that time is spent with conditioning exercises, training exercises, or turn-out time – t hey all get personal attention. We take no shortcuts on feed, bedding, or anything regarding the care of the horses. They get the best of everything.” ob Bick, Caralyn Schroter, and BC Show orses represent the pride of ownership, a commitment to the care and education of clients and their horses, and the unique advantages of a strong, versatile team. Where one is good, two are definitely better ome in Smithfield, North Carolina, BC Show orses is a place where people and horses can enjoy learning together; achieving their goals while gaining friendships and support along the way to success! KM Bugatti

Ted Carson, of Ted Carson Training Center has traveled the globe showing Arabian horses in-hand for owners and breeders in arenas the likes of Paris, Dubai and Brazil. He’s not only a presenter, but also an honorable international judge in those accredited competitions as well. He and his wife Brandi have even thoughtfully bred many of those horses. The satisfaction and thrill to be on the line of such an animal is certainly the reward of the hard work, preparation and conditioning that takes place at home, long before the event begins. And that’s “all good” for this team … l iterally. J ust a 40- minute drive from the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport or two and a half from artsfield ackson Atlanta International Airport lies the scenic dream, made reality by the Carson family at their training center in the small town and rural charm of Allgood, Alabama.

The 65- stall facility, sitting on 252 trail lined, wooded acres is a laid back, centered and calm environment for both breeding and show horses. The family’s clientele has evolved into many passionate horse breeders who enjoy the comradery and competition of the show world while taking pride in their individual programs presented on the regional, national and even international stage with Ted Carson Training. Of course, every owner is thrilled to be the big winner on any day,” Ted explains, “but when they reed the horse, sometimes even a 2nd or 3rd generation, it is awesome. We spend hours, days or even months discussing with our clients the different possibilities in breeding decisions, so when the resulting foal two years later is everything they hoped for and more? Boom! It feels allgood!” The farms stands anywhere between 6- 12 breeding stallions at any time, servicing breeders domestically and internationally, while also enjoying 10-15 foals born each year. “It keeps everything dynamic and inspiring, along with simply beautiful at the same time,” Brandi says, who primarily takes care of the breeding at the farm, while the show team is on the road. TC is proud to stand these world renowned sires including one of the breed s celebrities, Bugatti. e is who we would call one of our great Arabian horse ambassadors.” says Ted “Aside from contributing some of the most successful show horses of all time, he’s proud, kind, smart and fantastic to be around! He is what an Arabian horse should be!” Visitors to the farm who don’t have a horse … yet, are always welcome to the farm to simply get up close to an Arabian. They are encouraged to put their hands on one and really look into their eyes. Y ou do not have to be a breeder to enjoy the group at Allgood. They are happy to introduce you to the Arabian horse with a serene walk through their forest, hugs on a foal, or spectate a photoshoot; then see what goes from there! Newnan, Georgia We welcome you to Talaria Farms in Newnan, Georgia! While visiting our farm, we hope to share the beauty and joy of the legendary Arabian horse and our knowledge of their history, lineage, versatility and kindness. As we tour the barns, you will see a uniquely “open” design of the stalls, where all horses have a view of the central arena and can hear and see each other in a close-to-natural herd-like existence. We offer to both Talaria-owned horses and our client horses, elite, spa-like amenities, including exercise areas and an equine swimming pool (which enables exercise without undue stress and provides therapy when needed)! We also offer plenty of pasture time, and low-stress comfort for the breeding animals, babies, and those horses in worldwide competition, that need a little time to “unwind.” Educational activities are available, along with other fun celebrations (clinics, seminars, open houses, farm fairs), which take place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Founded by Allison Mehta and her husband, the late Curtis Westley, the name “Talaria” (borrowed from Greek mythology) means “graceful and swift,” a beautiful description of the Arabian horse with which the farm is associated. We choose to dedicate our lives to the Arabian horse, because there is no other breed like them and their ability to connect to the human being, build bonds, establish trust, and give you their heart, no matter what the task. It is this passion we hope to share with all newcomers as well.

Canton, Georgia

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and 40 miles from Atlanta, Vicki Humphrey’s Training Center (VHTC) is a full-service training and breeding operation where Arabians, Half-Arabians, Saddlebreds and Friesians fill the barns. VHTC is also home to The Atlanta Riding Club (ARC), a program open to the public, to riders who do not own their own horses but want to learn to ride. The ARC also provides additional lessons for riders who own show horses but want extra practice. Clients range from beginner lesson riders up to those who compete at the top level of competition, the U.S. Nationals, and all have one thing in common, the love of the Arabian horse. Some are beginners, some are breeders, some come to cheer on their children, and some come to cheer on their parents. They have chosen the Arabian horse for many reasons. They have a personality that is sensitive, kind and responsive at a softer and higher level than many breeds, and they are charismatic and beautiful, with tiny ears, a chiseled head, and high tail. Bey Berry Love is an excellent example of this at the farm, a 7-time National Champion in English and Costume, he is kind with a good-natured soul. VHTC’s doors are always open for visitors to stop by and tour the show and baby barns, and you won’t be disappointed. The list is long, the lessons that an Arabian can teach just about anyone, but especially children. They teach many life lessons beyond equestrian skills that are invaluable. Along with courage, perseverance and patience, they build their self-esteem and confidence. They learn too, about camaraderie, working toward goals with a team, failure, success, and dealing with both. All are important qualities for living the best life while creating a bond with Nature’s most beautiful gift. or more information isit www. ic ih mphreytrainingcenter.com

Palmetto Arabians sits on 80 acres in Timmonsville, SC, approximately two hours from the Charlotte International Airport, and historic, Charleston, SC. Owned by Frank and Sara Chisholm, this working breeding facility stands six stallions, 15 broodmares and 30 prospects ranging in age from weanling to 2 years of age with their primary discipline focus being Western Pleasure. Frank shares their goal, “to breed not only beautiful Arabians, but great minded ones that you want to live with, as they crave human interaction. Nothing fills us more than walking the pastures with newcomers to the breed, and showing them the love they have for us.” A shining example of that perfect Arabian on the farm is May Dancer V, the matriarch of Palmetto. “She was the easy choice,” shares Breeding Manager, Sarah O’Brien. “From the moment you meet her, you just want to hug her and give her carrots! I can’t tell you how many children have crawled all over top of her in her stall—she is just the kindest and sweetest mare.” or more information on almetto ra ians follow them on ace oo or log on to www. almetto ra ians.com

And the Chisholms breed a lot of those. Awarded multiple Breeder of the Year Awards by their peers, they were inducted into the Hall of Fame just so others might attain the same goal. “We focus on breeding performance horses. Horses that are conformed well, can easily, and therefore happily, carry a rider,” says Frank, “but it is the icing on the cake when they are beautiful enough to compete in-hand as well. Thoughtful and responsible breeding is so important. The life-span of an Arabian horse can be over 30 years, so breeding one that has purpose for a good life is paramount.” They measure their success by those who enjoy their horses. “Whether it is winning a ribbon, trail riding, or simply just bringing pure happiness to a family,” says Sarah, “that’s what brings us joy.” A visit to Palmetto Arabians is to have an emotional experience. The stunning farm offers one a visual foundation of their program—mares out in the pasture grazing—from the moment you pull in. Walking the fields of the young horses and babies is everyone’s most favorite. “We socialize these guys a lot,” Sarah states, “so the moment you walk in the gate, they know you are there to see them.” To know an Arabian horse is to be tutored in patience, but once you’ve established their trust, your life will become more thrilling and filled with kindness and love.
