Comments From The Publisher
Starting The Year Out Right I’m not exaggerating when I say that not a day goes by that I’m not aware of how lucky I am to be involved with Arabian horses, and I would bet that most of us who know them feel the same way. This year, I realized another aspect of our breed that we are fortunate to have as well. Anyone in the equine industry knows how important our community spirit is. We love our horses and, in this time when kids are so involved in pastimes that do not relate to the hands-on satisfaction of spending time with horses, we have to be able to “sell” how wonderful our world is. Every breed and discipline has this challenge, and every one has at least one event during the year where they come together to celebrate. Not only do Arabian horse lovers have many of those events, but we have Scottsdale, right at the beginning of the year. Each February, before we go on to our other gatherings and competitions, we have the greatest show on earth. We see the best of our breed doing nearly everything it does, we reconnect with friends from all over the world, we hand out awards, and generally reaffirm why we love our horses. Cheerleaders before the start of a bowl game don’t have a better opportunity to build team spirit and attract newcomers! At Scottsdale, I saw all of us working together to better our breed. Some years, our collective passion is especially apparent, and I feel that 2018 was one of those times. You couldn’t miss that we are truly a community dedicated to the Arabian horse and its future. In support of that, I want to give a special shout-out to Howie Schatzberg, Scott Bailey, and Kathy Knill Meyer for doing an outstanding job of sending the message of Scottsdale to Arabian horse enthusiasts worldwide. They were the official photographer, videographer, and live feed providers of the show. That’s a thankless job, and we owe them such a debt of gratitude, because the images, excitement and breaking news of Scottsdale depended on their efforts. And as usual, some heartfelt thanks goes to the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Association Board of Directors and to Taryl O’Shea for providing us with an amazing venue in which to showcase these beautiful horses. We’ve started this year with a bang, so let’s do our best to make sure that the rest of our show season lives up to its potential. I think 2018 is going to be one for the record books.

Arabian The Top NATRC Horse In 2017 a.k.a. Ted, a 17-year-old chestnut Arabian gelding, owned and ridden by Jonni Jewell of Decatur, TX, was named the winner of the North American Trail Ride Conference’s (NATRC) highest award, the President’s Cup, at its 57th annual convention in Albuquerque, NM, on February 9-11, 2018. It is awarded to the one horse in the nation with the highest total number of performance points.
Tezuby,
Three years ago, Ted was 14 when friends gave him to Jonni. With conditioning, he bloomed into a handsome horse with a willing-toplease attitude, who won his first National Championship in 2016, his first year of competition. Ted is Jewell’s second President’s Cup horse and could not be more different from the first one, a bay Arabian called Hank. Says Jonni, “Hank naturally took excellent care of himself on the trail eating and drinking constantly. Ted never passes up food, but he is not one to drink well on the trail. I tried different methods to get Ted to drink better, and finally decided he would drink when he was thirsty. Hank always had his own agenda and I had to figure out quickly how to make things my idea. Ted, on the other hand, really does want to please, tries very hard to do what I am asking, and not second guess me like Hank would.” Throughout the ride year, this winning team was chasing another rider in points. It took trailering 9,800 miles and 13 rides, with five firsts, five seconds, two thirds and one fourth, to clinch the Cup at the final ride. Through this outstanding performance, Ted and Jonni also earned his second National Championship, the combined horse and horsemanship award ( Jim Menefee Memorial), 1st overall heavyweight class horse, 1st overall heavyweight class horsemanship, 1st heavyweight class in their region, high point Arabian, and Ted’s 1,000-mile award. All this despite Ted having been laid off for two rides because of a stone bruise. Tezuby must be a living example of the old saying, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.” What does Jonni think? In accepting the award, she said, “If you have a dream, don’t give up on it. One of my favorite lines from a song is ‘Keep on dreaming, even if it breaks your heart.’ You just never know when a dream may turn into what you think is impossible, possible.” NATRC, the United States’ oldest and largest long distance competitive trail ride organization, is open to all equine breeds and disciplines. It offers rides with several divisions providing challenges for those new to the sport as well as for experienced competitors. NATRC invites folks to see what they and their horses can achieve and offers free membership to those new to the organization. n pictured, right: Tezuby, Jonni and friend, Fran Muench, enjoying a wooded trail at the Robbers Route CTR in Oklahoma. March Cover And Leaders Of The Times:
A Once-In-A-Lifetime Horse by Theresa
Cardamone
Once in a lifetime, a stallion comes along who fulfills our every ambition and dreams. He is a model for breed standards, an international champion, and the progenitor of offspring that are his equal, and perhaps even better. For Janey Morse, that once-in-a-lifetime horse is Vitorio TO. Ar abian Horse Times | 62 | Volume 48, No. 9, Issue #3
VITORIO TO
(DA Valentino x Sol Natique)
IGNITING THE WORLD! 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2018 Leading Halter Sire in North America Over $350,000 in prize money won by Vitorio offspring Multiple International Champion winning offspring
The most accomplished son of multi-National Champion DA Valentino, Vitorio TO is out of the double-Negatiw mare Sol Natique. Ever since he won his first United States national title as a yearling, Vitorio has identified himself as a leader of his generation. Likewise, he has identified himself as a leading sire from the time his first progeny hit the show rings of the world. His exceptional quality and conformation have earned him national championships in three countries, while his genetic prepotency makes him a perpetual leading sire at the most prestigious shows on the planet. Vitorio TO leads by example, time and time again. Vitorio reinforces his dominance with each successive foal crop. One after the other, his progeny rise to the top. Meanwhile, Vitorio himself continues to mature into an even more impressive version of an almost perfect stallion. In 2017, Vitorio and his trusted guide David Boggs returned to the U.S. Nationals, looking to add to his previous titles of National Champion Yearling, National Champion 3-Year-Old and National Champion Futurity Colt. In a closely contested final, Vitorio was named the 2017 United States National Reserve Champion Senior Stallion with the high point score of the show. Janey Morse appreciates Vitorio not only for the physical attributes that he passes on to his foals, but for his fine mind and great attitude, which he also doles out in large measure. The trainability of the Vitorio progeny has been a major factor in their show successes, both in-hand and under saddle. They are fun to work with and can also cross the boundaries between show horses and family riding horses. He is the perfect choice for diverse crosses because he consistently adds beauty as well as correct Arabian conformation and type into the equation, producing predictably great results—even on the world’s largest stages. Vitorio TO has been the perpetual leading sire at “The World’s Largest Arabian Horse Show,” the Scottsdale All-Arabian, for the past two years—spanning all halter categories for both purebreds and HalfArabians. Achieving the Leading Halter Sire title at Scottsdale even once is a tremendous accomplishment, but Vitorio TO did it for the third consecutive time when he was once again named the Leading Halter Sire at the 2018 Scottsdale show. Even more impressive, he led by total points (142, to second-best 98), another mind-boggling endorsement of Vitorio, the sire. In May, Vitorio TO will turn 10 years old. It is a startlingly young age to have accomplished so much, either as a show horse or as a sire. To have done it so handily across the board is truly remarkable and bodes well for the future of Oak Ridge Arabians, and the breed. There are many years ahead for Janey’s once-in-a-lifetime stallion to add to his already impressive legacy. n Ar abian Horse Times | 63 | Volume 48, No. 9, Issue #3
HEATHER WEBB, Al Nayfat Stud Farm Manager
Where is Al Nayfat Stud located? We understand it is a new stud farm. What will be the primary goal of the farm? We are a new Arabian Stud Farm, based near Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. I was employed at the beginning of December 2017 to begin creating the stud from the ground up; not just finding our first foundation horses, but designing the stud from paper to the first brick! It was a very exciting adventure. Our primary goal is the same as everyone else’s … to be the best!
Please tell us about some new purchases and what your primary goal with them will be regarding breeding and showing. The primary goal was to come to the USA—who I firmly
believe have the best show Arabians in the world—to purchase our foundation mares and stallions from the best pedigrees that can produce what I describe as, ‘a leg in each corner,’ built with substance and refined faces with the best conformation. A horse to me, whether a show halter Arabian or not, must be a horse in every sense of the word … not just an ornament! In time, results will show for our mares quality, but in regard to our stallions, they are already proving to the world from producing so well at Scottsdale!
In visiting with you, there is a desire from you to put together a strong group of horses that are functionally built, as well as beautiful. Why is this so important to you, as sometimes people will overlook the function part for beauty. What is Al Nayfat’s history with Arabian horses? Yes, you’re right, this is very
important to me. I am saddened to see too many horses bred just for the face, with less and less attention paid to the rest of the body. I see way too many foals produced developing into literally ‘stick insects’ with two legs coming out of one hole! The adage ‘No Foot, No Horse’ and ‘legs carry the body’ still rings true today, and I believe it is something every single breeder worldwide should adhere to.
What was your first impression of Veyron ORA, and do you think his future will be as a breeding horse in the Middle East? Oh my gosh, what can I say about this amazing horse … he is
the reason I met David Boggs and have had so much success already. Veyron is simply incredible, not only somewhat easy on the eyes and amazing on paper and in the flesh, but he has the best temperament I’ve ever seen in a stallion. I can’t express how excited I am for his future; I feel he will be one of the major breeding stallions’ available worldwide.
Ar abian Horse Times | 64 | Volume 48, No. 9, Issue #3
I have just used him for the first time on our own mares and am super excited for next year to meet his get. I expect him to have a fantastic stamp on his babies; there is no reason why not, his sire, the great Vitorio TO, has already proven this time and time again. His dam, Luxemere Jizette, is an incredible mare, not only a U.S. National Champion mare, but she has incredible beauty and a body to simply die for.
How has it been for Al Nayfat Stud, owning the reigning Scottsdale and U.S. National Champion Stallion SM Azraff? What drew you to this beautiful stallion and what are your plans for him? I fell in love with Azraff on my first trip to Scottsdale back in December. Never in a million years did I think I would be so lucky to be in a position to purchase him.
I returned to Saudi Arabia in January, and simply couldn’t get this incredible horse out of my mind. Returning to the U.S. this February, we managed to negotiate purchasing him, fulfilling my dream. I couldn’t be happier, every time I see him all puffed up presenting, he literally reduces me to tears; it happens every time! His first crop of babies in the USA are just starting to sprout and they are all fantastic so far. He has stamped them well and I hope they will all go onto highly successful show careers. They are stunning. As for his future, if all goes according to plan, I sincerely hope that we can take him to the Canadian Nationals in August; depending on how this breeding season goes, as he’s pretty booked up.
Regarding your almost un-heard of success of four championship wins for one stud farm at this year’s prestigious Scottsdale show, what does this mean for Al Nayfat Stud?
I’m still reeling with the enjoyment from my first Scottsdale show experience; the largest and best show in the world. To come away with four championships is way beyond my expectations, especially for a ‘first timer’! It’s raised an eyebrow or two, I can tell you! Whilst it’s an honor to have the most amazing Arabians and do so well with a team of people who have totally trusted me in my choice and stood by me, I seem to have set the bar quite high for the next show! I’m under no illusions that this may not happen every outing, but in the meantime, I’m still going to try and enjoy this ‘after glow’ of having such a huge success and I look forward to the future very much. I truly have some beautiful horses and want to continue producing winners based on quality, not quantity.
When you came to the U.S. to acquire horses, whom did you seek out for advice in purchasing them and why? Now there’s
a story! After being offered the position of stud manager in December of last year, I decided the way forward for Al Nayfat and indeed, the Middle East, was to come to the USA for the best quality Arabians.
I did a massive amount of homework and had chosen Veyron ORA almost before I saw him, along with the beautiful young stallion Hermes. I somehow ‘ just knew’ that these gorgeous stallions were for us, and the way forward for a completely new breeding program with new blood in the Middle East. Because of Veyron, I met David Boggs of Midwest Training Centre in Scottsdale. His bank of knowledge and an understanding of what I was trying to accomplish has been invaluable and extremely exciting. I’m pretty sure I rattle his feathers frequently by being so, as he calls it, “picky,” but I’m sticking to my guns on my choice of horse, as I believe every horse I choose has to have a future as a riding horse too. They have to be functional, so they have to be right in every way and pass top pre-purchase vettings. David sees every horse with me; two sets of eyes are always best, and he keeps me grounded. Since I’ve met him, the rest as they say, is history. He will be training and showing for me with his amazing team at Midwest here in the USA and I hope, of course, in the Gulf when we start there. Through David, I have had the extreme pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with some of the top breeders in the world, and so look forward to seeing their studs during this year.
As manager of Al Nayfat Stud, what impact do you hope to have on Arabian horses throughout the world? I honestly
hope to produce a new line of Arabians based not only on beauty, but on substance, bred out of pure quality.
Horses who not only ‘look the part,’ but who can really perform; who are solid and with character, which will help us to win worldwide. I really want to put Al Nayfat Stud firmly at the top of the best Arabian studs of the world. Its quite the goal I know, but I am one heck of a determined lady with a big dream and who is off to a good start. My team at home are behind me all the way and I’m excited to show in the Gulf soon. I’m hugely competitive, which comes from my endurance career before, so I hope that I can earn the reputation of ‘Oh no, she’s here, we have to run for our money now!’ That suits me just fine!
In your eyes, where do you see Al Nayfat Stud in the year 2025? Gosh, that’s quite a question. I want the name of Al Nayfat
to be synonymous with Arabian breeding and a name everyone will remember and respect. I don’t envision hundreds of horses, just a few, but a few of the best in the world!

HEATHER WEBB, Al Nayfat Stud Farm Manager A LITTLE ABOUT YOU …
How long have you been involved with the Arabian horse and where did this passion come from? I worked for Sheikh
Saeed Bin Maktoum Al Maktoum as an endurance trainer in the mid90s near Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. I did extremely well, both in the Gulf and Europe. The Arabs as a nation adore their equine heritage … the Arabian horse. Arabians are a major part of their cultural history. I guess in a way, their roots intertwined with mine and my passion developed into a life changing career. I firmly believe the Arabian is the most intelligent of all equine breeds; they are super sensitive to everything around them. I’m a very patient and caring woman and have such an affinity with these stunning animals. Somehow, we just gel, and I am so lucky to get the best out of all my horses, no matter what discipline. I’m not a horse whisperer; I just listen and understand them.
Where is your place of origin and what brought you to the Middle East? I was born in the UK but brought up in Singapore and
Cyprus. My parents packed me off to boarding school in the UK, which I hated with a passion. The good side is that I learned to stand up for myyself. I got bullied something terrible and never got over the feeling of abandonment, but whether good or bad, it made me the strong person I am today. I don’t take silliness or ignorance from anyone, which is not always a good thing, but living in Saudi Arabia as a single female has its challenges and I’m up for a challenge!
My father was in the Royal Air Force and after his retirement, his career took him first to Oman, then the UAE. Me? I simply followed, fell in love with the Arabian breed and stayed. So far, my entire life has been in the desert. I totally love it; not just the beauty, but the people, culture, history, food, way of life and, of course, the heat!
You have a strong love for endurance horses; how did that come about? I used to be a vet tech at Dubai Equestrian
Hospital in the early days of endurance in the UAE. I knew there was a way to win without being detrimental to the horses’ welfare, so I proved it! My very first race was 120km and I remember thinking it can’t be that tough! How wrong I was. Five days later, I was still coming down the stairs on my backside as I hurt so much! But the bug had bit, and I was hooked. It’s still my real passion and competing in the Tevis Cup—the hardest 100-mile race in the world—is on my bucket list. My dearest friend, Jennifer Waite, is riding this tough race again this year, so I shall crew for her to get the feel of the testing course, and hopefully, in the not too distant future, I can try to finish it.
What is the perfect day for you? This is soft I know, but walking down the aisles kissing soft noses first thing in the morning.
I just like to be with my ponies and when I can, ride for hours. It takes a lot for people to understand just how much I adore my horses.
What has been the most rewarding experience to date for you with the Arabian horse? Winning four championships at
Scottsdale is right up there, believe me, but honestly, it was finishing a really hard 120 km endurance race on a mare called Hillyuri, who literally pulled my arms out the entire race. She was a bit of a nut job. I cried with pain and wanted the vets to vet me out, but they didn’t and we finished in the top ten. I will never forget that day!
What has been the most overwhelming aspects of acquiring some of the most beautiful Arabian horses in the world? That’s
easy … having just the best boss in the world. My team trusts me totally and let me choose the Arabians we have to date. The fact that we won four championships with just four horses is amazing. Hopefully, I’m doing something right! Azraff still manages to make me tear up every time I see him, I can’t believe such beauty and character can exist in a horse. He simply blows me away.
You have traveled a lot over the last few months; what has been the most challenging for you? Jet lag! My poor passport was new in 2015 and I only have one page left!
I miss the UAE and Saudi Arabia so much, but it’s nice to be surrounded by some of the best people I’ve ever met here in Scottsdale. I came with one suitcase and cabin bag with no winter clothes which is
hard, but I am managing to acquire a new wardrobe now. Boot Barn … what a fabulous place! I have left my amazing grooms in charge back home in Saudi Arabia. Asad, my foreman, has worked for me for years and knows exactly the high standard I expect in all aspects of running a top-class yard. Without him and my other staff, I would spend my entire time here fretting about the few horses I have there. I’m very lucky. When I’m here in Scottsdale, I’m working them. It’s hard, hard work, but good for the figure and the weigh scales!
If you were to describe your experience with the Arabian horse in the USA, what would you say and why? Simply the
best. They are solid, proper horses. Each owner and trainer I’ve met here knows every single horse they own and the pedigrees. The passion here is deep rooted and it’s not just a way of making a living, it’s truly a passion to everyone I’ve met. It’s really quite humbling and very special.
Away from the horses, do you have any other hobbies that you enjoy? Cooking, cooking and more cooking. I love to entertain
at home and watch my friends enjoy my culinary attempts! I used to run and hike too, but I’ve broken my back twice in the past, so it’s somewhat challenging nowadays. Walking is hard enough half the time! I do enjoy just being quiet and chilling, and one day hope to find a partner who totally understands this and enjoys the same simple way of life. Horses, food and peace … what could be better? n

The 63rd Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show A Glorious, Grand and Giving Community
by Catherine Cole Ferandelli
W
hether winning your first championship roses or meeting an Arabian horse for the first time, a common bond community creates itself every February at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. With fire flower excitement, the annual Scottsdale show launches each show season for our industry. 2018’s event was “all in,” embracing inimitable passion and promotion of all that is the Arabian horse. What makes the Scottsdale show a “top of the list” favorite for so many folks from so many different walks of life? The first attraction is arguably the glitz and glamour an Arabian horse projects, whether under saddle, cart or prancing with a halter handler. From February 15-25, the competition hosted more than 1,100 classes across six bustling show rings, from native costume to hunter and English, working western and halter to jumpers, totaling over 12,000 entries this year. “2018 was a great year,” enthused Arabian Horse Association of Arizona (AHAA) Executive Director Taryl O’Shea. “We saw our horse count up over the last few years, and our sponsorships and commercial exhibitor participation was strong. The quality of the horses was unparalleled, and the number of countries represented was up over 100 this year. So, on all accounts, we had a banner year!” Clearly the multiple breeding programs and other prize money incentives bring out the very best of the Arabian horse breed.
“
This year’s Scottsdale Show was amazing. We had the most horses we have had in a decade, with more classes, vendors, sponsors, events and spectators. Despite the cooler weather, people were excited to be at the show. It was one of the best shows on record and I was proud to be a part of it. —Taryl O’Shea, Executive Director
”
The horse entries numbered approximately 2,400, all vying for over $2 million dollars in prizes—a compelling catalyst for breeders, professionals and amateur competitors alike. Within this mix, handlers and riders are of the tenderest of ages (even preschool!) to folks well into their “golden years.” Equally diverse in age and origin are the more than 300,000 spectators exploring the WestWorld show grounds community, taking in performances from multiple arenas, exhibitions, sales presentations, events and special demonstrations. Bred for beauty, function and kindliness, the Arabian horse enchants we humans, bringing out the best in us. Community creates itself from this unique atmosphere, a feel-good connection of sorts, paying tribute to the majesty of the world’s oldest breed of horse. Heralding good will, the show was a proud donor to numerous charities, including the March Of Dimes, Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund, Arizona State University Western Equestrian Team, Scottsdale Community College Equine Sciences, Horses Help, Ryan House, Warrior Horses and more. New this year, Wednesday’s

Wine Walk offered great wines, craft beer, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and live music. Located in front of the main aisle, folks imbibed, engaged and enjoyed the splendid Scottsdale sunset all while benefitting the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund. This event and others delivered a community gathering crafted to give for the greater good. 2018 Scottsdale enjoyed weather a bit kinder to exhibitors than the previous year; cool, mostly comfortable and just one day of rain. Still, regardless of weather conditions, Scottsdale always brews a concoction of exhilarating atmosphere throughout the show grounds. From first time visitors to seasoned equine professionals, the air is electric with the anticipation of accomplishment, intrigue and an energy like no other. This ambience invariably sources back to the gorgeous, yet gentle Arabian horses giving their all. Indeed, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show personifies:
“THE GREATEST HORSE SHOW ON EARTH!”
Dozens of daily features kept the action going non-stop. Spectators of all ages could meet an Arabian horse, express their equine passion through art classes, attend learning sessions, enjoy pony rides, visit wildlife displays, and even adopt a dog through the Waggin’ Wheels Arizona Humane Society and more. Over 300 commercial exhibitors created a shopping venue offering delights in all price ranges. Culinary vendors were varied and delectable. The two largest classes of the show were the Scottsdale Signature Stallion (SSS) Futurity Yearling Filly and Colt Amateur to Handle (ATR) halter classes with 81 in the fillies and 63 entered in the colts. The SSS futurity is a program that AHAA started in 2002 and is the largest prize money program in the Arabian industry. Between all the AHAA shows, the organization gives away over $500,000 in prize money to SSS classes each year. Performance classes featured in the Equidome and Wendell arenas maintained excellent numbers too, with many of the classes requiring elimination competitions, whittling down the numbers for the dramatic final event. Working western classes performed in two arenas on each end of the show grounds. Entry numbers stayed strong with a special note of increased numbers for the always exciting and unpredictable Reining Futurity competitions. Put on each year by the Arabian Reining Horse Association, $75,000 in prize money, saddles and other ‘goodies’ are awarded to the top Purebred and Half-Arabian 4- and 5-year-olds. Scores were high and the excitement was electric! Ranch Horse Riding, new to the Scottsdale show in 2017, saw excellent numbers in both the open and amateur classes. Drawing mainly from the trail

“
The 2018 Scottsdale show proved once again, why it’s the “Greatest Horse Show on Earth.” The show was up across the board this year, from the number of horses to spectators and everything in between. It’s always fun to see the high caliber of horses every year and how they get better every year. We had many first-time spectators this year. Every Barn Tour was full and the “Meet a Horse” always had a huge line. These two programs give the public the opportunity to get upclose-and-personal with an Arabian horse and ask lots of questions. With “Meet a Horse”, over 1,100 pictures were taken with them on the horse. It’s one of the best souvenirs they can take home with them. Thank you to all exhibitors who chose to come to Scottsdale. We put this show on for you—the reason it’s such a success. And a huge thanks to our entire staff. You spend countless hours before, during and after the show to make sure things run as smooth as humanly possible—you are awesome! The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is the place to be! —Jay Allen, AHA A President
”
horse and reining horses, ranch riding gives the horse and rider a more relaxed partnering of completing a pattern over simple obstacles at varied gaits, similar to riding out on the range. In addition to huge cash prizes at Scottsdale, the same can be said for horse sales. The 2nd annual Marquise Auction exemplified this perfectly. Offering fifteen lots of top bred bloodstock, the sale achieved over $2,000,000 in proceeds. The average sale was $153,000, the highest sale $450,000. Auction action was busy and brisk as was the charity fundraising auction for “Legend,” an exquisite life sized Arabian gold sculpture created by renowned artist Suzanne Economopoulos. Auctioning of “Legend” was part of the Arabian Horse Association’s Market Development and Promotions Committee’s Horses for Humanity project, utilizing the Arabian horse as an ambassador while uniting communities through a common philanthropic interest. Breeder Dan Grossman won the final bid, giving $75,000 for the statute. In addition, a remarkable $25,000 was donated by Arabian Soul with all proceeds going to benefit the Arabian Horse For Humanity Project and Warrior Horses for Warrior Kids, a charity for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Hundreds of Scottsdale show volunteers hand over countless hours, working everything from the half dozen arena in/out gates to concierge for the thousands of spectators seeking to view the Arabian horse extravaganza. Every day brings multiple thrills to the Scottsdale show with the final weekend like the frosting on the cake. The final Saturday night session features the Gamblers Choice Championship, daring riders and their mounts to navigate multiple obstacles on a timed rapid-fire jumping course. And the $5,000 Platinum Performance Arabian At Liberty Championship gives the Arabian horse a free style opportunity to show all its beauty, glamor and grace to a packed grandstand of cheering show goers.

The Scottsdale show concluded on Sunday evening. After a full day of championship events, the APAHA awards recognized the industry’s best and brightest horses and humans, professionals and amateurs of 2017. Dedicated to promoting and upholding a fair and level playing field in the horse show arena, the APAHA promotes “kind and ethical treatment of our horses and the people who own them, and the pursuit of excellence in all things relating to our sport.” The conclusion of the APAHA Horseman’s Awards means the show has come to an end. Emotions range from triumph to truly tuckered out, all of which soon give way to setting out plans for next year’s Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. n

Dean and Terri Wikel
First as Wikel Arabians and then as Pegasus Arabians, Dean Wikel and his family have been creating exceptionally beautiful and athletic animals in a true family business. It has been a successful enterprise from the very beginning and set the stage for producing the type of horse they would soon become known for. From the very first horse ever bred under the Pegasus Arabians moniker, the Pegasus Arabians breeding program took off to create a legacy that continues to flourish in both performance and halter. Particularly over the last five years, Pegasus Arabians has developed into one of the most impactful breeders in America, pulling in numerous important year-end or competition-related titles. In 2014, Pegasus Arabians was acknowledged as the Leading North American Halter Breeder; in 2015 they were on the list as a Leading Breeder of National Champions. The acknowledgements for excellence in breeding continued. In 2016, they were a Top Breeder of National Champions and Reserves; in 2017 they were a Leading Halter Breeder at the U.S. National Championships.

“We want to be known as a breeding farm,” states Dean Wikel. “We’ve bred over 1,000 horses (both purebred and part-Arabian) over the last 28 years. Currently, we breed 20 or so mares a year, although we used to do more. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved. For the last five years, we have been the High Point Breeder at the Arabian National Breeder Finals in the fall. We have also been the High-Point Breeder at the Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas for two of the last three years.” Dean pauses before he wryly continues, “I guess somehow, we’ve gotten the word out that we’re breeding some pretty good horses!” Consider the word spread. Already this year, Pegasus Arabians topped the list as the 2018 Scottsdale Overall Leading Breeder, an achievement which sets the farm up for consideration for 2018 year-end breeding honors and deserves a closer look.
An impressive array of 33 horses bred by Pegasus Arabians competed in championship classes at Scottsdale to take the Leading Breeder title, with Dick Ames’ famed Cedar Ridge Farm finishing in 2nd place with 27 horses and Marty Shea coming in 3rd with 16. Separated into halter and performance divisions; 21 Pegasus-bred horses competed in halter championships to secure 1st place on that list over 2nd place Aljassimya Farm and 3rd place Oak Ridge Arabians. In addition, the 12 Pegasus-breds in performance championships tied for 4th place on the leading performance breeders list. It is an incredible achievement which places Pegasus Arabians even more firmly among the world’s most elite breeders. Pegasus Arabians consists of three facilities: two ranches in Arizona and the home farm in Berlin Heights, Ohio. Pegasus Arabians at Sandspur Ranch, Scottsdale, is the primary center for show and training while a second ranch in the desert houses the clinic of the Pegasus reproduction veterinarian. The Ohio location is primarily a breeding farm, with most of the

broodmares and foals enjoying its vast pastures. In order to keep the pedigrees fresh, about a third of the Pegasus mares are bred to outside stallions each year to introduce new bloodlines to the existing herd. But all of the horses that are showing and winning are bred by Pegasus Arabians. “We show what we breed,” says Dean. Dean believes that the success their horses have enjoyed is proof that they are breeding something that sustains the balance between form (halter) and function (performance). “That is one of our goals, to breed a horse that can not only compete in halter when they are yearlings and two-year-olds, but can also make the transformation into performance when they are four or five. There have gotten to be specialties within the breed, where people are breeding, say, for an English horse that can’t necessarily compete in a halter class. And others are breeding horses that are high-functioning as far as halter is concerned, but yet can’t make it under saddle. Our horses do both well. We believe they need to have a job for the rest of their lives.” Two examples of Pegasus-bred horses who have stood the test of time are Kappuccino and Vitality PE, who were the 2018 Scottsdale All-Arabian Overall High-Point Purebred Arabian and Overall High-Point Half-

Arabian, respectively. Kappuccino is one of the most highly decorated Pegasus Arabians show horses, by their Huckleberry Bey son Bucharest V and out of their Allience daughter, SS Wildflower. The 2017 Canadian National Champion Country English Pleasure JTR 18 & Under and 2016 Youth National Champion Native Costume JTR 14-18 winner (among many national honors) competed in a dozen classes to earn his 2018 Scottsdale Purebred High-Point award. Kappuccino brought home three championships and two reserves in English Show Hack, Country English Pleasure, and Native Costume, including the Open Native Costume championship. Vitality PE is a bay part-Arabian gelding by Armani FC, foaled in 2002. Already a Youth National Champion in Hunter Pleasure JOTR 13 & Under, Vitality PE also competed in twelve classes at Scottsdale to earn his Overall High-Point Half-Arabian honors.

A 2003 U.S. National Top Ten Yearling Colt and Regional Champion, Masquerade earned 2005 top ten honors as a hunter pleasure horse in the U.S. and Canada before winning five national championships or reserves as a western pleasure horse, the two most recent at the 2016 Youth Nationals. luster to the contents of the Pegasus coffers by being named the 2018 Scottsdale Western Pleasure JTR Select Champion. That win contributed to even more Scottsdale honors for Pegasus Arabians when granddaughters Tristen and Tory Wikel each won the high point for their respective divisions. That alone is a startling result, as there were over 2,400 entries at Scottsdale and all of the exhibitors are tracked for points earned in the main arena for halter and performance. To have two individuals from the same family succeed so brilliantly at such a high level is almost unheard of. Regardless of the odds, Tristen Wikel was the 2018 Scottsdale High Point Junior Exhibitor 15-18 and Tory Wikel was the 2018 Scottsdale High Point Adult Amateur Exhibitor 19-35.

“That’s what it’s all about,” says Dean. “We take a lot of pride in our grandkids, who are all doing well with the horses. They are dedicated to learning what it takes and putting in the time to get it done.” Judging by the results that the current generation of Wikels is achieving, it is apparent that the future of the Pegasus Arabians breeding program will be in very good hands for many years to come. ■

PANEL 1 – ENGLISH BRIAN FERGUSON
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? The Arabian English Pleasure Mares and Championship. It was the most amazing performance by Heirs Noble Love. I had the privilege of judging her when she was named National Champion in 2016, but her performance at Scottsdale surpassed anything I have ever witnessed. Her performance in both classes put her in a class with the very, very, elite of all-time greatest English performances. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? The setting in February, especially when you come from Upstate New York. I also very much appreciate the promotion and professionalism of everyone involved with the AHAA. Taryl O’Shea and Matt Kwapich do such an exceptional job of organizing the whole event, that it appears seamless, and I know it is not. Scottsdale is the ideal platform to promote the beauty and versatility that is the Arabian horse; I am grateful to have been a small part of it. From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? The performance classes that I judged were overall, quite nice. I was especially impressed with the depth and quality and beauty in Show Hack this year. I was also able to get over to Wendell a few times to see a bit of the halter sections. The 3-year-old mare class that I saw seemed to be exceptional in quality and depth. I also fell completely in love with the yearling filly winner in the International class. Ar abian Horse Times | 116 | Volume 48, No. 9, Issue #3
PANEL 2 - WESTERN/HUNTER DONNIE BULLOCK
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? The Arabian Western Pleasure Open Championship. A phenomenal group of horses that were presented by their riders exhibiting the extreme athletic abilities of the Arabian western horse. Beautiful movement, impeccable manners and extreme beauty at its finest. Every horse in that final championship class deserved to be applauded loudly. It was an honor to judge such a great class. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? The Scottsdale Show gave me the opportunity to judge some of the best Arabian horses in the country in an upbeat and positive atmosphere. Excellent management and awesome exhibitors. Another rewarding aspect was having the opportunity to judge with two exceptional horsemen in the Arabian horse industry; John Rannenberg and Leo Hansen were the best! I now have two awesome friends to add to my life from this Arabian community that I love. From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? This was my first time judging on Panel 2 at Scottsdale with our primary classes being western and hunter pleasure. These divisions exhibited extreme quality throughout the show. It was unbelievable the depth of quality of the Junior horse classes in both divisions. In conversation with the other panels, it was evident that the overall quality of the horses at this year’s show was at the top.
LEO HANSEN
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? The Arabian Western Pleasure class. We had a work-off with six horses and in my 40 years of judging, it was the best example of western horsemanship I have seen. The horses were stellar and it was an honor to judge. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? Having already judged U.S. and Canadian Nationals, and living here in Scottsdale, it has always been on my bucket list, but work conflicts always prevented me from being able to judge previously until now, and it was a blast! Excellent horsemanship was on display and the show committee treated us like adults and not children. It was a pleasure to judge this show. From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? The overall quality was the best I’ve ever judged. The hunter and western classes were outstanding, not only the horses, but the exhibitors as well.
JOHN RANNENBERG
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? The Arabian Western Pleasure Championship, in my opinion, will perhaps go down in the history books as one of the most exciting and entertaining classes Scottsdale has seen in years. The sheer depth, quality, performance and athleticism of the horses was outstanding, and combined with the level of horsemanship and showmanship of the riders, was unparalleled. It was an honor as a judge to stand in center ring and be a part of something so profound. The energy, vibe and excitement created in the Equidome that Saturday night was truly memorable to its full house, as well as to over the 23,500 views of that single class on Facebook! What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? After doing the math, I figured that I’ve been coming to Scottsdale and competing for 39 years. In those many years for me, I’ve been fortunate to have had countless rewarding moments with lasting memories. 2018 marked my second opportunity to judge the show, first in the halter arena and now in performance. It was my pleasure to view so many outstanding performances by the horsemen and women who I admire and respect and who are so dedicated to the Arabian breed. Coming back to Scottsdale in February is the mark of a new year and show season. It’s a show like no other, appropriately named, “The Greatest Show On Earth.” From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? That’s easy ... a 10!
PANEL 3 – YOUTH ENGLISH ELIZABETH SHATNER
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? There were several memorable classes for all the right reasons, but my all-time favorite was the Western Pleasure Championship called by the knowledgeable horseman, Leo Hansen on Saturday night. It was electric and advanced! I was thrilled beyond belief. One for the record books! What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? I was so honored to be part of the “Greatest Horse Show on Earth.” Personally, Scottsdale was rewarding because the Arabian breed was my “roots” in the horse business. I earned my Arabian card in 1985 and have been judging Ar abian Horse Times | 117 | Volume 48, No. 9, Issue #3
ever since. I’ve added other breeds through the years, but the Arabian youth programs were my mentors in judging and horse training. To be invited and to judge the best of the Arabian breed for 14 days straight, associate with the other judges and show management who felt like a “tribe” and be more invigorated to look at horses than when I started, says it all. I met knowable horse lovers and picked up a piece of artwork that I love, love, love, which will forever remind me of my first Scottsdale and our family’s love of and connection through horses. From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show?Chillingly beautiful and extraordinary. So many were honestly fitting of the cliché, “living works of art!”
PANEL 4 – YOUTH HUNTER/WESTERN DEBBY CAIN
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? The open western was an amazing class that I watched from center ring but did not judge. The talent and horses were amazing. Our panel was privileged to judge the AATR and AOTR classes, and it was very rewarding to see so many families enjoying the same horse, once again confirming that this is a breed that becomes a part of the family. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? After pinning one of the 10 & Under classes, I realized that I had just judged the third generation of exhibitors from the Beethe family. Larry was a great exhibitor from Missouri, Shannon and Mike showed me impressive horses in numerous divisions, and now Mary and Larry’s grandchildren are following in their footsteps. I couldn’t help but smile. From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? I usually find myself adjudicating in the halter ring, but this year judging performance, I was able to see the exceptional quality of all the divisions. There were stars in each class. The Arabian community is breeding amazing performance horses with great conformation and athletic abilities, as well as stunning halter horses.
VAN JACOBSEN
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? Our panel had the opportunity to judge many of the youth performance and equitation/ showmanship classes, as well as the amateur hunter and western classes. Not one specific class stands out because there were many classes where the quality was deep, and the exhibitors showed their horses according to the class specifications. That alone stands out to me and they are a joy to judge. Many of the equitation and showmanship classes were very deep, with many of the exhibitors having great pattern work. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? I have had the pleasure to judge the Scottsdale show on several occasions and the show is ALWAYS special! It is a huge honor to be asked to evaluate the quality of horses that the Scottsdale show attracts. Classes are full, horses are great, and exhibitors are happy. The show management, staff and volunteers make this show great. It is always a pleasure to work with multiple judges who share your same passion for this great breed of horse! From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? The quality of the horses is exceptional. We can see some young horses making their debut, we see seasoned show horses, and we see new horse/rider combinations. The quality is so deep, it makes judging a pleasure. I enjoy the Scottsdale Signature Futurity and Maturity classes. It is great to see the get of Scottsdale Signature Stallions making their sires proud when they are showing under saddle and in-hand.
HALTER 1 & 2 – INTERNATIONAL/AAOTH/JTH/BREEDERS CLUB/HA-AA RODRIGO FORTE
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? In general, I liked the level of the show, but the female classes pleased me a lot! What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? Scottsdale is by itself, a unique and special show. I went to Scottsdale for the first time in 1993 as a child. After that, I came back many times, but I never imagined that one day I could judge this show. This was also the first time I judged in the USA, so it was all very special. I will never forget it! From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? Very good! The U.S. continues to be one of the best Arabian horse breeders in the world. For me as a Brazilian, it is always good to see the influence of Brazil in North American breeding and vice versa. Ar abian Horse Times | 118 | Volume 48, No. 9, Issue #3
It was very cool to see Brazilian horses winning again in Scottsdale. This partnership between countries has been extremely valuable to the breeders of both. We must work harder and harder on this.
RICHARD PETTY
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? As a division, the Yearling Colt and Filly classes in the International arena consisted of some of the most beautiful horses the Arabian breed has had to offer in a very long time. They literally took my breath away. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? The Scottsdale show has been rewarding and special for me as an exhibitor beginning in the late 70s, and as a judge for the first time in 1982 (remember Paradise Park on Bell Road?). Now residing at WestWorld, the Scottsdale show has blossomed into the best managed and one of the most prestigious horse shows in the world. This year I was honored to serve on the panel in the International halter arena with knowledgeable and respected colleagues from around the world. The enthusiasm of the owners and exhibitors was exhilarating, and I must congratulate the handlers for presenting their horses with style, dignity and respect. From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? The horses exhibited at Scottsdale—whether their discipline be halter or any of the many divisions in performance; youth, amateur or professional—were virtually unequaled in beauty quality and athletic ability. So many horses are introduced to the Arabian community for their first time at Scottsdale and often finish the show year eight months later as National Champions.
CORKY SUTTON
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? The International Stallion and Mare Championships. I really enjoyed judging these beautiful horses. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? The quality of horses you see. I really enjoyed the younger classes as this is the first time most of the yearlings have shown. The camaraderie between all of the judges is also very special. This show is the best managed event in this country, making it a pleasure to judge.
HALTER 3 - HALTER MARES/HA-AA OPEN/SSS ROB LANGLOIS
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? The 3-Year-Old Fillies were amazing. In my humble opinion, you could easily argue that there were four or five that could have been pinned champion in this incredible class. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? The magic of the Scottsdale show has and always will be the majestic Arabian horse, but the Association is second to none. From Taryl and Janice, to Matt and the unbelievable office personal, they were always friendly and efficient with a smile for everyone. Scottsdale assembles the very best ring men and announcers that the industry has to offer; along with the best sponsors, vendors and volunteers. So, the magic that everyone sees when they arrive at the “Greatest Horse Show in the world,” is due to having the greatest staff in the world; all the wonderful men and women that do all the hard work behind the scenes. From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? I believe the overall quality of young horses at this year’s show was the best in many years. I believe we a new group of more involved and informed breeders. They embrace the fantastic ideas and success of past breeders, while adding new ideas with a very hands-on approach to modern day breeding programs.
JOE POLO
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? The Yearling Fillies are always amazing because there is so much quality. After the show is over and I’m on a plane home, I always think about the horses I’ve judged and the decisions I have made. This year was no different as I reflected on the horses that won and I placed. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? It’s always great to have a unanimous championship because you know your judgement was among the consensus. However, classes that don’t have that tells you that it was a high-quality class and any number could have won, which is just as exciting. As a judge, I have always been respectful to every exhibitor, and am proud of my impartial and knowledgeable decisions.
Ar abian Horse Times | 119 | Volume 48, No. 9, Issue #3
From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? I’ve judged the Scottsdale show many times, and this year’s fillies and mares overall, were of the highest quality since I began judging.
HALTER 4 – HALTER STALLIONS/HA-AA/GELDINGS OPEN/SSS DUANE ESSER
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? One that clearly stood out to me amongst many great classes was the Senior Stallion Championship. The front line was incredible! It took a tremendous amount of thought to decide amongst great breeding stallions as to who should be on top of that class. It is one of the best stallion championships I have ever judged in my 27-year career. Even the second row of stallions in this championship are impeccable. That was an incredible group. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? The Scottsdale show on its own is just one of the best horse shows in the world. Every time I judge it, is a special event for me. Scottsdale in February is a glorious place to be, let alone surrounded by some of the best Arabian horses in the world. The Scottsdale show offers so much in the way of exciting events all the way through. There is something there for everyone to be amazed by. From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? The overall quality at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is just downright the best! It is a great preview to incredible breeding in-hand and performance horses in every division. Scottsdale is also the best preview for up-and-coming new stars in our breed—horses that will clearly go on to win the biggest titles possible. In my mind, there is no horse show that exists in the world that does it better than Scottsdale, giving a Scottsdale title tremendous prestige.
REINING PANEL MATT MILLS
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? The Half-Arabian and Purebred Arabian Futurities really stood out for me. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? I was happy to be able to have the chance to be part of such a well-organized and exciting event. I really enjoy judging; it’s not something that I get a chance to do very often being I’m usually the one getting judged. Thanks again for having me!
DRESSAGE/SPORT HORSE
DOLLY HANNON
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? The western dressage classes. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? The atmosphere, shopping and food. From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show?Very high quality in general.
PATTI O’CONNOR
Is there one class that stands out among the rest to you? I was truly impressed with the whole sport horse division. It would be too difficult to say one group of horses stood out more than the others. What made the Scottsdale show rewarding and special for you? I think that this is the best horse show for Arabians, and its reputation for high quality shows itself every year. From a judging perspective, how would you rate the overall quality of horses at the show? I am so impressed by the quality of horses, and how much the sport horse division has become an important part of this show.

SCOTTSDALE HIGHLIGHTS... “Lowe Riders came out strong riders. A great show and a little chilly, but our friends and horses warmed our hearts. What can I say? Affliction … Affliction … what an amazing horse. I am one lucky woman. The Amazing Horse Woman came to the show.” —Nancy O’Reilly
“What a great kick-off to the 2018 show season! The weather was good enough and the horses competing were excellent in all divisions, particularly English—it was incredible! For Tim and I, it was a great treat to watch the classes as many of the horses were of our breeding or bred by Maroon Fire Arabians/Shea Stables. With great sales in all disciplines, it looks like 2018 will be a very exciting year!” —Marty Shea
“I thought that all of the amateur English classes were really strong and Scottsdale was the place for amateurs who want to be considered on the national scene. I thought Heirs Noble Love, Eves Fire, and Coltrane’s performances with Joel Kiesner were among the best I’ve ever seen in that ring, and winning the championships was outstanding.” —Tim Shea
“I personally, had a blast showing at Scottsdale. Heirs Noble Love was better than ever, I got to show Eves Fire, and Coltrane snapped up his game three-fold. All our amateurs had a great show as well, and the Cohen’s dinner party for Kiesner clients was again, over the top! It is always fun to see everyone in a social setting away from the show and I always look forward to that evening.” —Joel Kiesner

“Ribbons, trophies, oh baby ... what an amazing 2018 Scottsdale Show for Dynasty Arabians and Team China! Thanks to everyone who has supported us and see you next year!” —Eric Xu, Dynasty Arabians
“It’s a Scottsdale to remember for Al Shaqab. Um Graiba Al Shaqab, a daughter of Hariry Al Shaqab was named Reserve Champion Junior Filly, and personally, I was thrilled about the return of Falah Al Shaqab on American show-grounds after one year in Europe. I always believed in Falah’s quality, but it was important to wait for the right time. His unanimous International Senior Stallion win confirmed his excellence. We look forward to his upcoming appearance in Las Vegas.” —Sheikh Hamad Bin Ali Al Thani.
“What an incredibly exciting experience to see Turismo RA achieve the coveted Scottsdale Stallion Championship! A magnificent horse fortunate enough to have the greatest teams, Midwest and Adandy Farm, give their all towards this UNANIMOUS win. Turismo remains undefeated!” —Merrilee Lyons
“I was blessed to have been an intricate part in unanimous Champion Stallion TURISMO RA! It was such a thrill to see my good friend David Boggs present him to perfection! Thank you, Silver Stag LLC, for giving me the opportunity to manage such a superstar horse!” —Cathy Vincent

SCOTTSDALE HIGHLIGHTS... “I never met Sigi Siller but know how much she meant to the Arabian horse universe. It was so special to have our friend (and Sigi’s daughter) Janina, present Queen Ayda the award for Senior Mare Champion and the accompanying Memorial Perpetual Trophy.” —Steve & Christina Poore, Orrion Farms
“The quality of the halter horses at this year’s Scottsdale show was perhaps at an all-time high, very reminiscent of the 80s. Absolutely exquisite was the young open filly classes and the resounding success of the Signature halter classes, reaching numbers into the 80’s! Both Champion and Reserve Champion Open Mares were imports and both previous National Champions in their homelands. The big, bold and dynamic Turismo RA brought back the electricity to the stallion finals, likening it to that of DA Valentino for many, myself included, having had the honor to present both. The newest rock star on the scene was El Rey Magnum whose appearance left not an inch on the rail to fit all the on-lookers during his unanimous Gold victory win and at his presentation Saturday afternoon at Midwest. Vitorio TO proved that greatness never goes out of season, earning Leading Halter Sire once again in spades. My personal most favorite moment was escorting the somewhat frail Lady Gina Pelham from Buenos Aries, Argentina, into the winner’s circle with her beloved Byronika (full sister to ‘The Queen’ RH Triana), thus fulfilling a breeder’s dream. Sales at Midwest during the Scottsdale festivities were amazing and hovered around a number very popular in our world … that being 20, and the number of horses Midwest helped market. For that, we are grateful for a successful and well-rounded show. All in all, Scottsdale proved once again, to be in fact ‘The Greatest Show On Earth!’” —David Boggs

“In addition to the terrific horses at Scottsdale, my kids and I were extremely impressed with the food available. I had a Chick-fil-A sandwich and Nothing Bundt Cake for lunch almost every day. Amazing!” —Andy Sellman
“El Rey Magnum RCF was embraced by the Arabian community during his showing at Midwest. They understand he is special.” —Doug Leadley
“Champion Arabian Reining Futurity Classic … Champion Half-Arabian Reining Futurity Classic and Reserve …” —Crystal McNutt
“Having my children and grandchildren in Scottsdale to enjoy the horse show for a few days with all of us was the highlight for me. It was extra special to see how my great granddaughter has blossomed into a little rider. I take great pride and joy in watching her.” —Dick Ames

EVENTS... Marquise Invitational Auction 2018 In their unwavering commitment to the Arabian horse and the breed community, the Marquise Auction Group met their mission of providing a beautiful event to showcase the finest Arabian bloodstock in a live auction environment, creating a public benchmark relating to values and demand. They successfully created energy and enthusiasm for the magnificent Arabian horse, broadening its worldwide base and instilling confidence in the marketplace, all with the highest degree of integrity. Well over 1,000 attendees/spectators were present for the last Friday evening of the Scottsdale Show at WestWorld with full capacity in the 550-VIP seating and standing room areas. Of the 15 lots, 14 sold, all meeting their net reserves. $2.149 million was raised, with an average of $153,000 per lot, the highest selling for $450,000. The Arabian community responded positively to this caliber of public auction. Proving the strength of the market, FA El Shawan and Virtuosa MLR’s 2-day-old foal sold for $225,000. With an international flavor and following, lots were consigned from the U.S., Australia, Brazil and Equador, and brought people from all over the world to bid as well. Organizer, Greg Gallun shares, “It truly was an elite auction with the grandest of Arabians available. The response we received to this being a must-attend event was exciting. It was the hot ticket of the Scottsdale show and participation was incredible. Not only were Arabians of the highest quality purchased, but we were able to give back as well, by auctioning “Legend” to Dan Grossman for $75,000 to support the Ryan Melendez Warrior Horses For Warrior Kids Project. We look forward to continuing to provide this exemplary auction every year.” n

EVENTS... Stachowski Farm’s Scottsdale Select Sales Presentation & Online Auction by Ashley Roberts A few years ago, Jim, Peter and I were brainstorming new and unique ideas of marketing show horses. We discussed the possibilities of utilizing horse show locations in conjunction with sale horse presentations. For marketing, it would ultimately prove to be the most convenient method of giving the potential shopper the best opportunity to acquire a new horse. This conversation eventually lead itself down the path of combining a horse show location with sale horse presentations in the show ring, to be viewed live, both in person and online. This would showcase the beautiful Arabian horse under the brightest of lights, which adds excitement to the horse show as well. We all remember the glory days of big horse auctions, which horses were bought from rush decisions by buyers, or from just being caught up in the thrill of the auction bid. Because Stachowski Farm prides itself on the process of matching the right horse with the right rider, Jim, Peter and I, wanted to add that excitement of auction-style selling, but do it over several days, to give the potential buyer the opportunity to make the right decisions by giving them a chance to try the horse out. Before last year’s Scottsdale show, Stachowski Farm teamed up with Arabian Horses Times’ Lara Ames to help bring the idea to life. For the online auction, a “Buy It Now” option was added to each horse listing. This gives a buyer total transparency on what the horse was priced at by the seller, and for a serious purchaser, a way to immediately purchase the horse without delay; by pressing the “Buy It Now” button, the horse is yours, without negotiations or going through a bidding war with another perspective buyer. There was a horse for everyone at this year’s Scottsdale Select Sale. With two live Sale Presentations, the first being Sunday, the 19th, at Cedar Ridge Arabians in front of approximately 200 people, 33 horses available for purchase were previewed. The main sale presentation was Wednesday night during the horse show in the South Hall of the Equidome. Excitement was in the air as 42 horses were presented in front of a huge audience of potential buyers and spectators. At both presentations, buyers were able to view the horses, take them for a test drive or schedule a private viewing at their convenience. With Stachowski Farm’s third time using this new system of marketing and sales of show horses, 28 horses were sold at the show, compared to 25 sold the previous year in Scottsdale and over a dozen at the Buckeye Sweepstakes Show, totaling over 65 horses sold and over $1.5 million in sales. Congratulations to all new owners and trainers of horses sold through Stachowski Farm’s Scottsdale Select Sales Presentation and Online Auction. We wish you all the best and are looking forward to hearing of your success and seeing you wear ribbons in the winner’s circle! n

A Loving Tribute To Rick and Laura Gault ‘Two Hearts Are Always Better’ by CATHERINE COLE FERANDELLI Family is usually defined in genetic terms, be it human or horse. That said, the Gault family—making up two and four legged friends—begs to differ. Tammy Sanders (Laura’s sister) attests, “Our barn may not be blood, but we are all family.” With amour in mind, many of us can tell a warm-hearted recount of how a couple met through a horse. But, how many loving couples can trace their beginning to a Half-Arabian gelding aptly named Key To Mmy Heart? True story—the foundation of Laura and Rick’s Gault Training LLC, Archdale, North Carolina; its inception through this endearingly named gelding. Laura’s father, John Faircloth, tells the story, “Rick and Laura met through a horse trade. We were at U.S. Nationals—one of the last in Albuquerque. We were looking for a Half-Arabian Pinto; until then, most of our showing had been with purebreds. Laura had located a prospect she liked through a trainer named Rick Gault, who at the time, was training out of Washington State. Well, Rick showed us this Pinto, gave it some thought, and said he had another he wanted to show us. That was Key To Mmy Heart, aka “Tommy.” Little did I know then, how Laura’s and our lives were about to turn over a new leaf!” John and Laura bought the gelding, returning home to their family home and horse operation in High Point, North Carolina. John laughs, “I was oblivious to Rick and Laura’s having struck a spark in Albuquerque; staying in touch, building a bond, falling in love across the miles. Sometime after, lo and behold, Rick was re-locating to our farm from Washington. Rick packed up his business, lock, stock and barrel, moving cross-country to High Point, taking a colossal chance on love and a new life.” John adds, “Our horse life has always been a family adventure, it’s just our family has gotten bigger.”

Laura aboard Key To Mmy Heart, aka “Tommy.”
Gault Training, now in its 17th year at the Archdale, NC location, started with 19 acres and has grown to a nearly 50—a custom designed operation turning out national champion bloodstock, consistently achieving national championship honors in all disciplines, both in open divisions and with its spirited, supportive amateur clientele.
John confesses, “I’d have started with the horses earlier in life had I known all the joys it would bring to our lives.” Reflecting, he continues, “Back around 1976, we moved to High Point, my having become the new Chief of Police. Soon after, Laura discovered horses, begging to learn how to ride. Wanting to keep peace in our family of three girls, my wife, Linda, found a local family operation offering riding lessons. Their daughter was Laura’s age and the family had Arabian horses. The girls’ friendship blossomed, plus Linda and I became good friends with the owners.” Several months went by. One day John and Linda were invited to go see a horse show at the fairgrounds in Raleigh. “Turns out, this was an Arabian horse show,” John remembers. “Here was where the Arabian horse ‘lightning bolt’ jolted our family. We were awestruck by the beauty and versatility of these gorgeous performing creatures. Another appealing discovery was the friendliness of this horse community—family and friends having a great time and supporting one another. As we were taking all this in, a large youth amateur hunter class entered the ring, around 25-30 riders. Our friend pointed out a grey gelding and asked what we thought of him. Taking a closer look, Linda and I spotted Laura on board this beauty! And she won the class, with my learning soon after that Linda and Laura had leased the horse a few months earlier. These were our Arabian horse beginnings; again, had we known, we’d have begun this joyous journey earlier. The rewards have been beyond anything we could have imagined.”
Ar abian Horse Times | 144 | Volume 48, No. 9, Issue #3
Long-time client, Rebecca Fulkerson-West, nods in agreement, “I too, was introduced to Rick through a horse, though it was not a likely beginning. My flashback takes me to Region 12 at the beginning of my horse show days; I was 16 years old, riding one of my first horses. This horse was a challenge, and I confess to getting increasingly frustrated in the warm-up pen. Rick (then a complete stranger) approached us, asking a few questions, then so kindly offering advice and support. He had no idea who I was, yet he helped me a few more times during the show. My parents and I were so impressed by his patience and concern, we promptly sent this horse to be trained by Rick and have been with the Gaults ever since! Rick and Laura took us on even though we probably had the lowest quality horse in their barn. Their innate kindness and caring quickly brought our family into the fold of theirs. The Gaults give all their horses and clientele the same attention, regardless of who or how important you are.” Rebecca’s horse was given the ‘old college try,’ with the realization he was not the right horse for her. Finding a compatible home for him was a win-win for all. Rebecca elaborates further, “Rick is truly soft-hearted. Still, when ‘tough love’ needs to be dished out, he will give it in a nutshell. During my second year of competition at Canadian Nationals, I was showing a nice Half-Arabian; my confidence boosted by this really cool horse I was just getting to know. To my shocked surprise, I was—unfairly, I thought then—given the gate, leaving the arena in a shook up, emotional state. Rick took me aside straight away, saying simply, ‘You’ve got to buck up and move on. Now.’ In other words, gain a positive perspective and go forward. That has always stayed with me as a top-of-the-list lesson in life.”
Rick aboard 2006 U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure Jr. Horse Melody V.
Rebecca concludes, “Our lives with Rick and Laura continue to make memories. One of my favorites was last fall at the 2017 U.S. Nationals. We were in the warm-up area watching Rick on Koweta Phoenix, getting him ready for our Western Pleasure AAOTR final—our last ride together in the show pen as he had earned a much-deserved retirement. Here’s Rick, showing off, having fun, exhibiting the inimitable bond he has with all his horses. This was such a happy sight to take in, my 16-year-old gelding and Rick, concluding their 14-year partnership as show horse and trainer. I’ll always remember it with a smile. You see, with Rick, it’s not all about the big prize, though goodness knows, we have been blessed there too. That’s what makes the Gault family so special.” Virtue, hard work and ‘rolling with the ups and downs’ are constants at Gault Training. Virtue is exampled by a program that always puts first the horses’ and riders’ unique character, talents and needs. Every horse and rider is evaluated and paired to the best of their abilities. Gault Training clients affirm, “You may bring a young prospect to Rick with your heart set on winning the western pleasure futurity—certainly, Rick is your man for that aspiration—but Rick will be the first one (after his best efforts) to tell you if your horse will be the right one for that job. If not, he will give the horse its best chance at the job for which it is suited. That’s how much he loves his horses. He wants all of them to succeed and be happy at whatever they do. A Gault show horse is a horse that enters and leaves the show pen with a bright, happy expression. They’re doing what they do best and enjoy it. We clients appreciate this—it is a big piece of what makes the Gault Training barn an allegiant community.”
Ar abian Horse Times | 145 | Volume 48, No. 9, Issue #3
A hard-working partnership is another vital cornerstone to Gault Training’s success. This family business is a training and breeding operation; housing multiple barns, pastures, arenas and office space. Four iconic national champion stallions currently stand at Gault Training: Anthem V (Jullyen El Jamaal x Alyce Bey V), Chablis WA (Magnum Chall HVP x Tatiana WA), Megga Starr (Besson Carol x AR Belle Starr), and homebred RGT Mozart (Zimmeron PGN x Melody V). Remarkably, all of these stallions were trained by Rick, and are multiple western pleasure national champions. Though the stallion showcase at Gault Training is ‘top of the line’ western, versatility runs throughout the show barn. National champions from nearly every discipline and division reside here: driving, English, hunter, show hack and more. Meg Daughton Gwyn, Assistant Trainer at Gault Training, knows the barn’s versatility firsthand, “When I was 11 years old, my family bought our purebred country horse, WMS Last Dance, from Laura. I was beginning my amateur show career and couldn’t have picked a better place!” Starting out as a groom, Meg has been an assistant trainer since 2016, learning the fundamentals from Rick. “Rick taught me that there are no shortcuts to training a great horse,” Meg proclaims. “We start with the fundamentals of dressage, a basic start for all our young horses. Timing and patience are key. Our method may take longer, but in the end, we turn out a horse with no ‘gray’ areas. How many show barns do you know of where the horses all nicker when they see their trainer? Our horses know their job, whatever discipline that may be. And equally important is the longevity of our horses. It’s telling to see the teenaged horses healthy, happy and still showing at top levels of competition.” Meg continues, “We have a top-notch breeding program. Yes, we are known for our western horses, but turn out some great English horses and hunters too. A good part of my work is starting and working with the youngsters. I was honored to show home-bred 3-year-old RGT Mercury Rising (Afire Bey V x Styling Time) at the 2016 U.S. Nationals, earning a top ten prize in the Half-Arabian English Pleasure Futurity. We were thrilled see him in the 2017 U.S. Nationals winner’s circle with Joel Kiesner as the AEPA Equine Athlete $50,000 Half-Arabian Futurity Unanimous Champion. Rick and Laura have jumpstarted my career and I’m extremely grateful.” Can a mentor also be a friend? Meg is adamant, “Absolutely. Rick is my horse training mentor, but both he and Laura are truly my mentors in life itself; such great examples of living life in a quality, giving fashion. They are open-armed, transparent, supportive and fun, whether or not the prize is won. Yes, we work long hours together all week, yet come Saturday night, my husband and I will frequently join them for a date night dinner out. I cannot imagine a better place to work.”

Clients Janice and Neville Lorick, recently celebrated their 14th year with Gault Training by acquiring the property next door. Janice smiles, “We have the best of all horse worlds. Early any given morning, I can look out my window and see Rick out feeding the horses, looking things over, making sure all is well. Our multiple western pleasure national champion Anthemn V, aka ‘Andy’, is now retired from the show pen and lives with us, but conveniently near his breeding operation. Our current western pleasure star is Gault’s homebred stallion RGT Mozart, aka ‘Duke’. After winning national championships as a western pleasure futurity and junior horse with Rick, Duke is now my ‘ride’ in the amateur western pleasure competitions.” Janice is avid, “Rick turns out the best in the western pleasure business. Even more wondrous is his ability to take these open horses and teach us amateurs how to show them! I am one of several mature clients Rick has in the barn. He has an uncanny sense of our physical challenges, training our horses to do their job willingly and happily, perhaps in spite of us! It’s a real confidence builder to go into the show pen knowing your horse knows you.”
He said my problem was that I did not believe in myself. Boy, did Rick and Laura change that belief! Going national champion in Canada was beyond my wildest dreams. It is such a great barn to show with. Everyone supports each other and even my non-showing husband has a great time!”
Most Saturdays at Gault Training are described as a weekly ‘family reunion.’ Lunch is brought in, clients old and new come to ride. Invariably, visitors who don’t own horses yet come to visit, and enjoy a kindred congregation of Arabian horse lovers.
Laura’s sister, Tammy, is Gault Training’s lead cheerleader, “Rick and Laura are drawn to people who treasure and appreciate their horses. My daughter, Jessica, was 11 years old when Rick came into Laura’s (and our) lives. I knew immediately she had found her perfect horse trainer match. It took a lot of nerve for him to move from Washington to North Carolina, but it was a good move. In fact, Rick and Laura were married in our living room.” Tammy further reminisces, “Early on, Rick picked out a horse for Jessica, a grey mare named Pelar, whom both went on to win Rick’s first national title as one of his amateurs; though we had been told by Rick that Pelar would be a starter horse and that Jessica would probably need to step up to another horse to win at the national level.” Tammy chuckles, “Golly, Pelar proved that wrong! —ultimately collecting multiple national champion and top ten awards. It’s the perfect example of Rick’s masterful talent as a horseman, getting as much as he gave. And that is how Gault Training has blossomed to today’s operation, a national level Arabian horse training operation fused with a culture of warm community.”
Antoinette ‘Toni’ Elliott, and her purebred Arabian gelding, The Wizard King, are formidable amateur western pleasure competitors, having won 2016 Canadian National Champion Arabian Western Pleasure AATR; just one of this pair’s many jog trots to the winners circle to receive those revered rose garlands. Toni tells it well, “My best memory of Rick is that he was the first person who told me I could actually ride.
The gates to Gault Training open wide and welcoming to all folks embracing fine horsemanship, camaraderie and just plain fun. We salute Rick and Laura Gault, from their beginning, of meeting through the gelding Key To Mmy Heart, to their superbly self-crafted horse community of today. Indeed, two hearts are always better … just ask the Rick Gault Training family.

We have worked alongside Rick and Laura Gault and provided veterinary services since they first opened their beautiful facility in Archdale, North Carolina. Their success in the Arabian world can be attributed to their work ethic, and dedication to their horses and clientele. It is not unusual to find Rick alone in the barn with his arm around one of the horses, just talking to them while feeding treats. His love and passion for the Arabian horse is truly heartfelt. The RGT experience is our family’s first introduction to showing with a trainer. Having shown on our own fairly successfully, it was time to find a trainer who was honest, hard working and talented to take us to the next level. Having known Rick, and watched him show for years, we knew he had received many accolades in the Arabian world, and we knew his horses were happy and loved their jobs. However, until taking lessons with him, we didn’t realize how willing and patient Rick is when teaching each of us different riding skills. He manages to convey the confidence and knowledge to his riders with the same intuitive level he challenges his horses in training. Within three months, he managed to prepare Taylor and Maggie to a National level with numerous Top Tens, and two Reserve National Championships in multiple divisions. His patient, informative approach to getting his horse and rider in sync is an art that few have accomplished, and he does it with a smile and “Yes, my dear!” each and every day.

Breeders of Multi-National Champions
Our family story of accidentally getting involved with Arabian horses has, over the years progressed from one leased Half-Arabian gelding ridden by Laura, a station wagon pulling a simple two horse trailer, and many weekend nights in motel rooms around North Carolina. As Laura became quite talented and successful, the first single horse led to searches for higher quality horses, a fancier trailer and truck, and a whole lot of tack and saddles.
Archdale, NC
It was during one of our father-daughter trips to a national show that a certain cowboy that we had not met before was showing a nice paint gelding in a western class. We were looking for such a horse, so we followed the cowboy back to his stalls. Short story: I bought a horse, my daughter met a guy with a charming personality who knew how to train and show horses and was thinking about moving his small operation from the northwest to another part of the country. Before too much time passed, Mr. and Mrs. Rick Gault had established a small but successful operation out of our 15 stall barn. Customers were beginning to send horses to Rick, even from the west coast. Out of this small start, Linda and I became partners in their new, much larger, and still growing complex named Rick Gault Training. Laura’s sisters were our loudest cheering section. As it turned out, Rick’s true talent brought top quality western horses to his barn and National titles became excitingly frequent. At the same time, Laura was pursuing her dream to become a top-level show judge. She has now accomplished that and is staying busy traveling the show circuit. What could be better? Through a little good luck and advice from close friends, our little group has been involved in a very successful breeding venture. RGT babies are growing up, being marketed and making their mark in the show arena. Linda and I are so very proud of Rick and Laura. We have watched them plan and struggle through hard decisions and build a name for themselves in the Arabian horse business. And I believe the best is yet to come.

Rick and Laura made my dream come true, when I worked for them. But more than riding amazing horses every day and having loads of laughs, they opened their home and hearts to me. “Royal Nobility is absolutely one of the best Nationals stakes horses we have ever bred. He has as much quality and stature of any horse in our breed today. He is long legged, has a laid back shoulder, and high defined withers, all which extreme athletes must have for National Championship roses. Royal Nobility is set apart by his pretty head with an extreme neck, tight ears and broadness between the eyes. Add to that, extreme tail carriage with incredible attitude and a commanding presence. His gaits and trot are beyond that which will produce thrilling goose-bump performances. The sky’s the limit with this great stallion for the future of our Arabian breed.” ~Tim Shea, Shea Stables | St. Clair, Michigan~
