COMMENTS from the publisher FALL IS IN THE AIR Right now, as I write this, we’re in what is often called “the dog days of summer.” Their one redeeming factor? For me, over the past 30 years, they have signaled that the U.S. Nationals is not far off. Fall is in the air—if only in our minds now, then very soon for real. Even in this different, difficult year, that makes my heart beat faster. Invariably, part of the joy of Nationals is in anticipating it. We all look forward to the 10 days we spend together in Tulsa, Oklahoma, watching some of the best Arabians and Half-Arabians from around the world. To help increase the excitement, AHT’s September issue is all about the U.S. Nationals. Ours has a rich history. The titles of U.S. National Champion Stallion and Mare, as we know them now, were first awarded in 1958, and our first stand-alone show took place in 1967. That’s a lot of horses, people, and good times to be proud of! We hope you’ll enjoy this issue and relive personal memories as you flip through the pages. As we turn our attention to this year’s show, the talent I have seen in the few shows I’ve attended tells me that 2020, despite its hardships, will offer some worthy names for the titles.

This year I’m especially looking forward to watching and competing in the young horse classes, where the talent is off the charts! And let’s give credit where it is due: congratulations to all of our industry’s breeders for giving us such great horses, year after year. They are the backbone of the breed. And finally, let’s remember that the times we are in now will, eventually, pass. I am grateful that we will have a 2020 U.S. Nationals to recall; not every sport has been as fortunate. So, this year it’s our job for those 10 days in Tulsa to be safe and smart. We will wear our masks, social distance, and show the world what a great breed of horse and people we have!

Murray and Shirley Popplewell have achieved a great deal as breeders and owners of world-class Arabian horses. And, along with thousands of other enthusiasts, they have made the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show their first stop of the show season each year, with countless championships earned for their Rae-Dawn Arabians. As the 65th annual edition of the show commenced in February, they felt the familiar anticipation and excitement. Still, they couldn’t know that they were destined to leave there with perhaps their greatest prize ever. Despite the depth and consistency of the RaeDawn herd, Murray is always open to the idea of a new addition, should he come across a horse that ignites his passion and makes sense for his breeding program. Likewise, Rae-Dawn trainer Alcides Rodrigues keeps his eyes peeled for opportunities to continue to elevate the farm profile on the world stage. So perhaps it isn’t too surprising that among the over a thousand horses on the showgrounds, they would, independent of each other, discover the same prize; a horse who gave them both goosebumps. The stunning bay yearling with an exquisitely chiseled head and classic proportions is MD Massima (Truest x MD Mirka [AJ Thee Luca x MD Psylk, by Padrons Psyche]), a third-generation product of famed Ecuadorian breeder Manuel Durini. Murray explains, “Alcides and I both loved her the moment we saw her. She is the type of horse that, when you look at her, she grabs your heartstrings and won’t let go.” Before the filly even showed in the championship, the decision was made to try to acquire her for Rae-Dawn. At the time, Massima was in the capable hands of trainer Mike Wilson, with whom they negotiated a first option to Ar abian Horse Times | 18 | Volume 51, No. 3

purchase and an agreed-upon price. And it was a good thing that they did. Wilson went on to show MD Massima to the title of Scottsdale International Gold Champion Yearling Filly, earning a unanimous decision from the judges’ panel and creating a slew of eager potential buyers. On behalf of Durini, Wilson was true to his word, and the filly went to RaeDawn. “Mike honored the price and the deal, even after the filly went unanimous champion,” Murray enthuses. “I will always respect the integrity that he displayed, with so many other interested parties wanting her themselves. Shirley and I, and the entire Rae-Dawn team, are grateful to breeder Manuel Durini for this incredible opportunity. Massima fits my idea of a great horse, and we feel very good about her future at Rae-Dawn Arabians.” MD Massima is a daughter of Truest (Trussardi x Marlene Dietrich, by Marwan Al Shaqab), who is both the 2015 U.S. National Champion Futurity Colt and U.S. National Champion Junior Stallion, as well as the 2017 U.S. Reserve National Champion Junior Stallion. MD Massima moves with an elegance and regal bearing that captures the attention of everyone who sees her. Her strength of character and presence are palpable and not-to-be-denied. Murray and Alcides felt it, and so did each of the judges who scored her class in Scottsdale. It was, as Murray puts it, “a confirmation” of what he already knew. No one could have known that the 2020 Scottsdale Show would be the last major Arabian horse event to take place before the onset of “stay safe, stay at home” orders, issued in early March. Plans were radically changed; dreams were put on hold. But now Murray has his sights set on the U.S. Nationals in October, where Alcides is set to show MD Massima under the Rae-Dawn colors. Murray can’t wait. “She has earned the right to be the Arabian Horse Times’ Cover Girl for the U.S. Nationals issue,” he declares. “We hope that she will win again in Tulsa; however, we love her no matter the outcome and know that she will make her mark on the Arabian breed.” Ar abian Horse Times | 19 | Volume 51, No. 3

O

Overlooking the rolling hills covered in the morning’s fog on the track at Kiesner Training, it’s effortless to reflect on the impact this training and breeding facility has had on the Arabian horse industry. The visible compounds represent the many facets of their work: open arena windows that look into where countless

National Champions have made their preparations, the isles leading into the show barns where the industry’s most exemplary stallions stand, the breeding barns that house the foals destined to refine and enhance limitless breeding programs, and the office that accommodates all who have a passion for Arabian horses, as well as the headquarters for the inimitable management of the entire operation. Joel and Ashton Kiesner are seldom absent from the show ring, putting forth a performance with some of the best horses to date, but spending a day at Kiesner Training behind the scenes, it is apparent the work and care that is put into getting show-ready. In this environment, for most in the industry, seen are the fond moments and memories between Team Kiesner that occur along the patient and understanding journey of taking each horse to their fullest potential, which makes itself apparent in the barn’s show record. Among their dedication of training and showing, the breeding expertise implemented into years of foal crops, have already shaped the direction of the industry, providing others with horses who are able to guide breeding programs and ignite awe in the show ring. Beyond the windows filled with the stalls of multi-National Champions rolls the pastures filled with foals completely unaware of how thoughtful their creation was inspired by the selective and hopeful breeders whose relationship with the farm has grown over decades. The farm proudly stands and manages a collection of breeding sires second-to-none and undeniably paramount to the breed. The stallions at Kiesner Training have made an indisputable impact attributed to the master training and management of Joel and Ashton. This husband-and-wife duo oversee the care of the horses by attentive grooms, as

well as an unequaled breeding program. In 2020, Ashton and her team completed the laborious task of serving owners of over 360 mares with their timely semen shipments. This amount in any year is a feat, but amidst the challenges of a global pandemic, this achievement is heightened. The commitment to their stallions through to the breeders who have chosen them for their mares is unwavering, as the outcome for this dedication will be illustrated in the future with the industry’s next prodigies. The fields are lined with the pedigrees of tri-colored success. In the past 20 years, looking at the purebred English Pleasure divisions alone, Joel has won 11 U.S. National English Pleasure Open Championships. Since the inception of the AEPA in 2007, the farm has enjoyed garlands for eleven of the top spots. And in the Junior Horse division, the launching of 10 more, now living legends, took place wearing a Kiesner browband. The couple also notes 12 champion and reserve trophies in the last decade in the Open Country English division, with five in the last five years, three in a row by Ashton. Reflecting on all of the wins, the Kiesners are quick to point out that the real reward is happy clients and playing a positive role in their journey within the industry.

PROUDLY STANDING

Now with 15 years on their 65-acre facility in Lousiville, TN, that they have built from the ground up, the two can reflect on years of tenacity and growth. But of course, living in the now is of utmost importance and it is exactly the reason for a past and a future filled with hard work, gratitude and results. The band of long-time clients, friends and colleagues brings full circle the experiences shared throughout the years. However, on the track, a moment is provided in which to center oneself, and to recall the fundamental reasons for the almost ludicrous thought and care

Whether you are brand new to the show scene or a weathered pro, if you had the privilege of noticing a couple of flashy pairs of Prada shoes run past on their way to a winner’s photo, without knowing them, you could probably assume two things … “colorful and winners.” While it’s not too difficult to make that assumption, there is way more to just how accurate that generalization is.

Some people are simply winners. They are so dynamic they radiate a winning shine. Two of those people within the Arabian horse industry are Dr. Joe Kinnarney and his husband, Bradley Marlow. They are a compelling force that goes far beyond a stylish pair of shoes and a winning herd of English horses, and AHT had the opportunity to sit down and chat with them about their “horse life,” past, present and future.

schatzberg Ar abian Horse Times | 193 | Volume 51, No. 3

A long-time client of Kiesner Training, Joe’s showing days go back to his childhood. He was an equitation guy and rode Thoroughbreds with the full intention and goal of making the Olympic team. That dream was smashed, however, with a car accident his senior year in high school which sent him on a much different path to becoming a veterinarian. In predictable fashion, Joe went further, eventually earning the title, President of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) in 2014. It certainly was a pinnacle of a doctor’s career, undeniably dynamic; but he didn’t stop there. Twenty years prior, Joe began his long and successful friendship with Joel Kiesner. It’s had its own colorful longevity; first with his 1994 U.S. National Reserve Championship aboard LA Midyawn (Huckleberry Bey x Musteeka), followed by a slew of winners, including: Afire N Spyce (Afire Bey V x HL Justaspyce), Afires Heir Apparent (Afires Heir x AF Ellenai), and Big Apple Ghazi and The Big Eazy (both by El Ghazi), among others. Joe remarked, “I‘ve always told Joel and Ashton, ‘your job is to make me look good.’” It wasn’t a difficult task for the Kiesners, as Joe always had the right attitude.

A BUCKET LIST BY ANY DEFINITION The 90s were a good time for Joe, as he had another “four-legged” fascination in the dog showing world. A mere few months after his first National Reserve Championship in the irons, Joe earned the most coveted trophy in the dog world. With Scottish Terrier CH Gaelforce Post Script, aka “Peggy Sue,” came the title of “Best in Show at Westminster.” Joe smiles today as he remembers the Governor of North Carolina who came to the launch of his new veterinary hospital 15 years later, and his favorite part of the tour was to see the Best In Show trophy! They have since added to the family during the pandemic, a Chinese Crested puppy named Prince and a black Standard Poodle named Kingsley, to go along with their current Standard Poodle, Peidmont A Star is Born, aka “Prada.” Bradley does not have the lengthy background of horse shows and green shavings that Joe does, but the dynamic winner thing … he has that. Now living in Greensboro, North Carolina, the pair have 15-20 Arabians, Half-Arabians and American Saddlebreds at any given time and enjoy their barn time. “Bradley has a much different eye than I do when it comes to the horses,” Joe explains. “He sees their contour, their lines. He studies the pedigrees and really focuses on both the genotype and Ar abian Horse Times | 194 | Volume 51, No. 3

wins this year with WC RWC Good Luck Chuck (Undulata’s Nutcracker x WCC CH Sultry Heiress) and Joe was named the 2020 Amateur Gentlemen’s Three-Gaited World’s Champion in their debut performance in Freedom Hall. “I saw ‘Chuck’ at Bonnie Blue, then at Jr. League,” recalls Joe, “he was special at first sight.” Brad agrees, “When Joe sees a horse, he wants to ride it immediately, and this one he did!” Another huge highlight was the first horse they bred together, now owned by Joel and Ashton Kiesner. Suddenly Speechless (Undulata’s Nutcracker x RWC Softly Spoken) and Kelly Self Lockhart earned a reserve championship in 2-Year-Old Three Gaited Division 1. Ar abian Horse Times | 195 | Volume 51, No. 3

And the year of COVID-19 mask-wearing horse shows won’t end there. Crowd favorite multi-national champion RGT Mercury Rising, aka “Freddie” (Afire Bey V x Styling Time) will have Dr. Joe and Joel in the irons in the Half-Arabian English, along with the purebred multi-national champion Movin On Heir WA, “Mo” (Afires Heir x The Way She Moves). Their third entry is Futurama, “Gangster” (Afires Heir x Futurette). He will return to the ring in the HalfAfires Prophecy SS (Afires Heir x Ritida)

Two to watch are maternal siblings of the legendary Adams Reserve National Champion The Heiristocratt—big shoes to fill. Enchanted Heir, a 2018 gelding sired by Afires Heir, looks every bit the part, and born this year is their second prodigy, suitably named Afires Prophecy SS. This colt folds back into his withers and trots forward like a springboard, putting on a show for anyone who will watch, and they all do! An additional threesome is sired by Multi-National Champion Inception out of a power-packed mare lineup of Heirs Noble Love, Rumina Afire and Reds Lady Princess (ASB). Not much more is needed to say with their pedigrees. They all are showing to be everything their papers say they should be and more, so one can understand why Joe and Bradley are just as happy at home as they are at a horse show. The smiles, the ambition, the experience, the enthusiasm, and yes, those colorful shoes … there is plenty more on the bucket lists of this dynamic pair, a fine example of the

amazing people within the Arabian horse community.

Leaders Of The Times

The decision to acquire Fire and Goldd (Afire Bey V x Brassmis, by Brass), was for Renee Pelzman and her daughter Morgan Runyon—their first purebred stallion purchase, from breeder Marty Shea—an easy one. When Renee surprised her daughter several years ago with his Half-Arabian son Goldd Standard (“Digger”), Morgan was simply awed. “I had never seen a horse with so much presence, style and charm!” she shares. “He has a personality unlike any other and we became very quick friends.” Wanting to learn more about where Digger came from, Morgan found from her research that Fire And Goldd had produced quite a few fabulous horses with limited promotion and breeding. “At the time,” says Morgan, “I hadn’t really heard much about him, but had a friend who had bred his purebred mare to Fire And Goldd and gotten the most amazing colt, and I had bought a stunning 2-year-old filly also by him directly from the Sheas, which made my desire to have him even stronger.” As soon as she saw “Goldd”, a stunning, copper-penny colored stallion, she fell in love and knew she had to have him to make more incredible babies. With the help of Dwane Hankins, and the support of the Sheas, the mother/daughter team agree that making Fire And Goldd theirs was one of their best decisions ever made. Giving Goldd his own pedestal and spotlight, there is a lot to love about him. “He consistently produces some of the most beautiful babies I’ve laid eyes on,” enthuses Morgan. “He is so incredibly handsome and easy to be around; his gentlemanly manners and even temperament speak volumes. He reminds me of Afire Bey V’s sire, Hucklebey Berry, so much—I’ll never forget our reaction when I put their pictures side by side, it was quite remarkable! Truly, he’s a complete joy to be around.” Renee agrees, “He is pretty much a throwback to Hucklebey Berry in phenotype and correctness, and he’s a big puppy dog to be around. Now we know where Digger gets his donut addiction!” With Fire And Goldd’s first foals hitting the ground under Morgan and Renee’s ownership, their excitement is palpable. “We’ve bred six babies by him who are living at our farm,” shares Morgan, “and other local breeders have let us come see their babies, along with photos we’ve received from very excited breeders around the country!” Both are incredibly pleased with them, especially as they are from a variety of Arabian and Saddlebred bloodlines. What physical traits does Fire And Goldd pass on to his progeny? Morgan and Renee echo his abilities to pass on his gorgeous, overall conformation; his most outstanding feature in terms of performance ability being his incredible long neck and laid-back shoulder which makes for easy bridling; strong, sturdy legs and feet, and a powerful hind end; as well passing on incredible expression with a beautiful, liquid eye. As for Fire And Goldd’s future, Morgan says, “Goldd will remain with Dwane at Colonial Downs Training Center for his care and management. The clinic we use for collection is only minutes away and they love him there. While I would love to see him shown, it’s not something that we feel is worth risking his safety on the road. His wellbeing is of the utmost importance, in my opinion. Besides, he has nothing to prove. His babies and their show records all speak for what an incredible sire he is.” So, what’s next? In addition to planning next year’s breedings and weaning babies that are on the ground, “We’re always up to something,” says Renee. “Next year it will be showing yearling Goldd babies in addition to our regular show string. We are really looking forward to seeing them in the middle with Steve Heathcott in the open and Morgan in the amateur classes. Digger was Morgan’s entree into the main ring halter world and now we’re hooked!” Ar abian Horse Times | 290 | Volume 51, No. 3

COVID-19 BEST PRACTICES Come Healthy … Stay Healthy SHOW PROTOCOL S Please keep these four thoughts in mind before you leave for the show; we want everyone safe and to have a good time, but we WILL enforce the rules and protocols that are in place from USEF.

• If you have been exposed to someone who has tested positive,

DON’T COME. • If you have any symptoms of COVID–19,

DON’T COME. • If you are unwilling to wear a mask, the entire time you are at the show and practice social distancing,

DON’T COME. • If you are worried about attending due to COVID–19,

DON’T COME.

W H AT T O E X P E C T W H E N YO U A R R I V E 1 – Changes to the show office – adds/scratches and results hands free 2 – Patterns will be online 3 – There will be a limit to number of people allowed in the warmup arena 4 – The show will be limiting seating areas in front of stalls 5 – We will be having pre-show meetings for review of COVID protocols 6 – Ingress and egress to the show grounds will be one way 7 – We have added staff who will be monitoring compliance of masks

MASKS

Participants are required to wear a facemask or face covering in any setting where there is a possibility of being within six feet of any other individual, except when mounted on a horse or driving a horse.

WEAR YOUR MASK

If for some reason you can’t wear a mask, you need to get an exemption from the USEF-compliance officer. The exemption request is to be submitted to USEF via email to USEF COVID legalrequests@usef.org. Mark the email as urgent. Once the exemption is received, you will be given a band to wear at all times.

COVI D -19 PROTOCO L S • Bring your own safety equipment with you. At the very least, you should have masks for everyone for everyday. Hand sanitizer is a must. Consider having individual air purifiers (some are designed to wear around your neck and make breathing easier). • Everyone must wear a mask. This helps to protect each individual from either getting or spreading the virus. Since there will be many folks coming and going, we ask that you have on your mask at all times. You may ride your horse without one, but as soon as you get off, put the mask back on. • Practice social distancing of at least 6 feet. We know that while you are in your barn area, there will be people that you see all the time. However, since someone may stop by, there is the need to wear the mask and practice social distancing even in the individual stalling areas. While in the stands, there is plenty of room to spread out, but keep those masks on.

• Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands often. Don’t touch your face. The OKC fairgrounds staff will be continually trying to keep common areas clean, but don’t rely on them. Look after yourself and keep those hands clean. Also keep your tack clean especially if it is shared between horses and/or riders. Don’t forget brushes or rags that might be shared with horses. They need to be sanitized as well. Allow only one person at a time in a dressing room to practice social distancing. There will be no parties allowed.

Ar abian Horse Times | 293 | Volume 51, No. 3

• Take everyone’s temperature every morning. If anyone in your group has a fever of 99.5 or higher or shows any signs of the virus (fever, sore throat, trouble breathing, etc.), stay away from the show and self-quarantine.

• Remember to social distance when you are going out to eat. The restaurants are limited in their seating, so you may want to make a reservation or not eat at peak periods. Also consider takeout. Many of the local restaurants will deliver to the barn areas. • While in the lineup, distance yourself out across the entire ring. • Be considerate at all times to your fellow exhibitors. This is a new normal for all of us. • All of the above is meant to keep you safe from the virus while at the horse show. If you do not wish to comply with these restrictions, then please notify us immediately that you won’t be coming and we will refund all but your office fees. • Travel safe as well. If you are driving, be sure to wear a mask anytime you stop for gas, food, lodging, etc. If you are flying, wear a mask at all times and be careful what you touch. Think of all those other folks that have touched that handrail or doorknob. Be sure to have your portable hand sanitizer with you and use it often.

FINAL THOUGHTS This will be one of the biggest shows with collective classes this year. All eyes are on us to prove that we can conduct ourselves in a responsible manner. If we do not follow the rules, we jeopardize all subsequent shows with collective classes. OUR INDUSTRY IS

DEPENDING ON YOU. Together we can make this work. Whether or not you personally believe in masks and social distancing, please don’t let your behavior reflect poorly on the rest of us and put our industry at risk. COVID isn’t going away anytime soon. If you choose not to comply with these restrictions, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE IMMEDIATELY.

We look forward to seeing each and every one of you.

Best wishes for a fun and successful show!

U.S. NATIONALS Judges’ Perspective

In-Hand/Bre e ding

LESLIE K. CONNOR Judge: 45 years | # U.S. Nationals: 6 First time U.S. National competitor advice … Try not to be overwhelmed by the occasion and enjoy every moment of the experience! Consider it a privilege to be showing your horse at the National level and think of winning a ribbon or trophy as “icing on the cake!” Biggest frustration when judging a class … When judging in-hand classes, when an exhibitor circles and circles his or her horse at a canter. It is not a lunge line class, and I would like to see the horses move out at a consistent trot. Also, I wish more exhibitors would walk their horses directly to the judges, and then walk and trot directly away for an adequate number of strides to be properly evaluated. What are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not, and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? In the in-hand classes, it is very difficult (actually, nearly impossible!) to properly evaluate legs from every angle from the stands. Initially, I love to see a horse who appears to be naturally animated, happy and full of life, and who exhibits outstanding Arabian type characteristics!

Ar abian Horse Times | 330 | Volume 51, No. 3

JEREMY HARPER Judge: 24 years | # U.S. Nationals: 2 First time U.S. National competitor advice … Relax and enjoy the moment! You earned it! Biggest frustration when judging a class … When handlers over show their horses. What are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? In the halter arena, legs and feet are much more obvious inside the arena than outside looking in. In the performance arena, we are able to observe many subtle changes spectators are not. In performance, I look for the “it” factor; that special difference that makes me do a double take. In halter, the walk really shows me who belongs at the top of my card.

VAN JACOBSEN Judge: 39 years | # U.S. Nationals: 7 Biggest frustration when judging a class … Please have your horse ready to enter the arena when the horse ahead of you is done and the judges are ready for your horse. We appreciate everyone entering the arena in a timely fashion! What are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? Judges have the opportunity to observe conformation strengths and weaknesses that may not be evident to someone sitting on the rail. In the halter arena, when a horse enters the ring with beautiful carriage, exhibiting classic Arabian type … this will get my attention.

KELLY ELM Judge: 29 years | # U.S. Nationals: 3 First time U.S. National competitor advice … Focus. Plan your ride and adjust as needed in the moment. Pay attention to your surroundings. Watch how others you admire ride their classes. Enjoy the time spent with your horse and friends! You’ve spent a lot of time and money for this moment! Biggest frustration when judging a class … When the class falls apart the second direction. For both halter and performance judges, what are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? The quality and expression of the horses really stands out when you see them up close, at ground level. You also feel the energy and intensity of the class more from center ring. I look for a horse with a good attitude that likes its job and performs it willingly, with ease and confidence, and possesses the conformation suitable for its division.

JULI GODER-LARSON Judge: 36 years | # U.S. Nationals: 5 First time U.S. National competitor advice … Go into Nationals with the intention of enjoying the entire experience, win or lose; and don’t lose sight of what an incredible opportunity it is just to show there. Enjoy the people you are with and appreciate all the beautiful and talented horses in every division. Biggest frustration when judging a class … Horses that are overridden and pushed past their optimum performance. Fast is not always better. All horses have a best speed; use it. What are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? The entire frame and motion and their relationship to one another is better perceived from the ground.

Ar abian Horse Times | 332 | Volume 51, No. 3

BRUCE MCCREA Judge: 44 years | # U.S. Nationals: 5 First time U.S. National competitor advice … First time competitors need to arrive well prepared and ready to compete. Plan ahead how you are going to warm up. Try to stick to an overall plan. Relax, think and be confident. Go get the job done! Biggest frustration when judging a class … In the bigger classes, is being crowded and pushed out of my position. What are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? You definitely have the best view from the arena floor. I try to see the whole arena, so I will see little mistakes people in the stands won’t see. You also see motion, cadence and soundness better in the arena. When the horses are coming in, I am looking to see who will be my stars in that class on that day. I will always be looking for expression, brilliance and quality!

CATHY VECSEY Judge: 10 years | # U.S. Nationals: 1 First time U.S. National competitor advice … It’s not about showing. That is the smallest part of what the week will be. Rail work in a class is less than 10 minutes. Make the week about your relationship with your horse and your friends. Make memories that will make you smile when you think back. The experience is so much bigger than the class. Live in the moment! Biggest frustration when judging a class … Watching wonderful, beautiful animals that are overridden and/or stressed which then no longer satisfy the specs of the class that I have to follow when I place the class. What are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not, and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? We get a much closer look at the whole picture from a totally different ground level angle. For me, it is easier to see and hear softness, balance and cadence from center ring. Those three things are huge for me coupled with a horse with an attitude that tells me he/she just loves being in there doing the job. As far as my first impression, I love to see a reflection of confidence in both horse and rider.

Ar abian Horse Times | 333 | Volume 51, No. 3

Main Ring - Ford Are na

JOHN POWER Judge: 20+ years | # U.S. Nationals: 3 First time U.S. National competitor advice … It would be the same as for the long-time competitor. First, be prepared! Start by reading the rules for the classes you are going to show in. You’d be surprised at how many exhibitors have never picked up a USEF rule book and read the rules that govern the class they are competing in. Pay close attention to the class description and then look for the Class Specifications for your particular class. We as judges are required to use these when judging the classes. Class specifications are listed in order of importance for each and every class we have. It can vary greatly between the different classes, so know how your class is going to be judged and use it to your advantage! Second, understand that we can only judge what we see. The amount of “quality face time you get from each judge” will definitely reflect in your placing. A class will last on average a total of seven minutes; seven minutes to view, evaluate and place, in order, up to 11 horses. Each horse/rider will get a series of 1-3 second views by each of the judges. These can add up on average to 30-40 seconds for an entire class if you’re lucky. Make the best of them and realize each judge has their own viewing spot. Show your best at those spots! Biggest frustration when judging a class … When an exhibitor will school/train on a horse while in my viewing area. I realize horses can’t be expected to go around the arena time after time without some little reminders of how to be their best. Just try to choose spots where the judges can’t see it. Don’t waste your 1-3 second moment! The things that I see as a judge in center ring are much more magnified in both speed and view. What are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? What we see down in the ring is a very different view from what a spectator sees from up in the stands. A horse coming “down the middle” looks great from the stands, but what we see is the blurry side of the horse and if the rider polished their boots or not. It is better to be seen by creating space and distance from the other horses by planning your pass coming out of the corner so the crowd is left behind, or you’ve created some distance in front of you. What stands out the most to me is a horse and rider with quality and attitude. A horse prepared and ridden within their own physical talents pushing but not exceeding the intent of the class; a horse/rider who shows, by their actions and expressions, that they deserve to win. Good luck and enjoy the show!

BRIAN SCOGGINS Judge: 28 years | # U.S. Nationals: 2 First time U.S. National competitor advice … Have fun and enjoy the experience. Biggest frustration when judging a class … In reining, when the centers are missed in the circles and the markers missed on the stops. What are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? There is a different view from sitting at ground level that is not in the spectator stands. The horse and rider need to be polished and have the attitude of a winner. Show me some sass and attitude.

TERRY THOMPSON Judge: 33+ years | # U.S. Nationals: 1 First time U.S. National competitor advice … Try not to go outside your horse’s ability and stay within yours. Biggest frustration when judging a class … Delay of exhibitors to show.

Ar abian Horse Times | 335 | Volume 51, No. 3

JAN DECKER Judge: 45 years | # U.S. Nationals: 5 or 6 First time U.S. National competitor advice … Have a good experience that is fun and enjoy your horse! Biggest frustration when judging a class … For Trail and Horsemanship, I can’t think of any; I just enjoy looking at a well-trained horse and rider perform the class requirements. What are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? Judges get an up-close view of the appearance the horse and rider present: details of attire, tack, grooming, etc. When judging trail, the judge has a good view of the performance of the horse over the course/pattern. A trail horse that negotiates the pattern with no penalties, style, ease, and cadence, will stand out in a class. What are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? From the ring, we are better able to observe penalties. Standouts are the movement and attitude of the horse.

Ar abian Horse Times | 336 | Volume 51, No. 3

KATHY CALLAHAN-SMITH Judge: 34 years | # U.S. Nationals: 5 First time U.S. National competitor advice … Download the AHA app for all daily updates and patterns, then breathe and enjoy the ride! Biggest frustration when judging a class … Exhibitors being too close to me in a performance class. It’s hard to judge that horse and the entire class, plus it is a safety concern for those on the ground. For both halter and performance judges, what are you able to observe from the ring that a spectator might not and what do you look for initially that will make a horse stand out for you? Being on the ground floor makes a big difference. You get a feel for the horse being up close and personal: quality, movement of the horse, leg conformation and other details that look different from our position inside the ring. For a horse to stand out to me, they come closest to meeting the rule specifications for that class. It is one thing to pick the most talented horse in the ring and another to pick the most talented and qualified mount for that particular class.

COUNTRY ENGLISH PLEASURE: *Imperative that the horse give the distinct appearance of being a pleasure to ride. A quiet, responsive mouth is paramount. Mandatory ‌ that horses be asked to halt on the rail, stand quietly, back readily and walk off on a loose rein at least one direction of the ring. OPEN* Shown at a walk, normal trot, strong trot, canter and hand gallop. Judged on attitude, manners, performance, quality and conformation, in that order. AAOTR/SELECT AATR* Shown at a walk, normal trot and canter. Judged on attitude, manners, performance, quality, conformation and suitability of horse to rider, in that order. JUNIOR HORSE (horses five years old and under)* Shown at a walk, normal trot and canter. Judged on attitude, manners, quality and performance, in that order.

AAOTR MATURITY Demonstrate snappy, animated movement at the walk, normal trot and canter, and in saddle seat tack and attire. Shown in a single snaffle bit with a cavesson. Horses in this class carry their heads lower and perform gaits in a longer, lower frame than the English pleasure style horse. Gaits are performed with the purpose of getting across the ground with an efficiency and ease that easily accommodates an all-day ride outdoors. Judged on quality, performance, suitability as a hunter, manners and conformation. This style of riding is very secure and comfortable and is the preferred style for many people learning to ride.

ENGLISH SHOW HACK: OPEN/AAOTR Shown at a walk, trot, canter and hand gallop; collected, extended and normal gaits to be called for; stand quietly and back readily. Light contact must be maintained with all reins at all gaits. Judges are required to consider the performance at each gait equally in adjudicating this class. REINING HORSE: OPEN/AAOTR/FUTURITY All deviation from the exact written pattern must be considered a lack of or temporary loss of control and, therefore, a fault that must be marked down according to severity of deviation. After deducting all faults, against execution of the pattern and the horse’s overall performance, credit given for smoothness, finesse, attitude, quickness and authority of performing various maneuvers, while using controlled speed, which raises the difficulty level and makes the horse more exciting and pleasing to watch. All riders must dismount and drop the bridle after the performance. FUTURITY (horses 5-years-old & under and must have never been shown in a bridle) Shown in a snaffle bit or hackamore. All entries will compete in two go-rounds. The final results to be based on an accumulative score from both go-rounds.

REINED COW HORSE: Horses are asked to work a single live cow in an arena, performing certain maneuvers that include circling the cow

and turning it in a specified manner, as well as performing a reining pattern. The reined cow horse class consists of two mandatory phases, the reined work and the cow work. Each phase will have equal bearing and the final placings will be determined by the total of both scores. All reined cow horses are to lope a figure eight; run at speed; stop and turn easily. Judged on rein, conformation, manners and appointments.

WORKING COW HORSE: At the start of the cow work, each contestant, upon receiving a cow in the arena, shall hold that cow on the prescribed end of the arena for a sufficient time to demonstrate the ability of the horse to contain the cow on the end. After a reasonable amount of time, the contestant shall take the cow down the arena wall at least once in each direction. The contestant will then take the cow to an open part of the arena and circle the cow at least once each direction. The contestant shall show the horse to the best of his/her ability upon the judges’ instruction, or at his/her own discretion. At the close of the gate, the contestant will have 20 seconds to signal for a new cow or shall work his/ her assigned cow.

CUTTING:

HERD WORK:

FUTURITY/OPEN/NON-PRO/NON-PRO FUTURITY/LIMIT–NOVICE HORSE/LIMIT– NOVICE HORSE NON-PRO Shown under Arabian Cutting Horse Association rules. Separate one calf from the herd and then prevent it from returning. It is the horse’s job to prevent the calf from rejoining the herd. Once the calf has been separated from the herd, the rider lays down the reins and hangs on, as the horse takes over and works on his own to keep the calf from the herd.

Similar to regular Cutting but allows more direction from the rider. Approach the herd without hesitation or reluctance on the part of the horse. Enter the herd deep enough to show the ability to make a cut and work the cow quietly and alertly causing little disturbance to the herd or the animal brought out. Credit given for driving cattle, clearing the herd by a sufficient distance and setting up a cow while holding it in a working position near the center of the arena.

The horse maneuvers back and forth, nose to nose with the calf, anticipating every move. Each rider is given two and one-half minutes to demonstrate his horse’s ability on as many calves as he chooses to work.

DENNIS & LINDA CLARK Long Meadow Arabians Owner ~ Breeder ~ Amateur

Discipline focus: Country English Pleasure

Discipline focus: Western, Working Western

The person who inspired me to get involved with Arabian horses ... my dad. He bought me my first pony at age 4. As an adult, the first horse that I connected with was an Arabian. It was destiny.

My proudest moment within the Arabian horse industry ... was in 2014, three national championships for Clark-owned horses: Dennis with Kristian Dior and Stanley White III with DLC Thebuckstops Here and Jeepers Kreepers.

My proudest moment within the Arabian horse industry ... when I won my very first USN top ten! My goal was simply to make my cut, but I did that and then some! I could not believe when I heard my number called! What an honor! The one thing I look forward to the most about U.S. Nationals ... spending time with my horse, my husband, and all of my horse friends.

The one thing I look forward to the most about U.S. Nationals ... catching up with friends that we do not see throughout the year. What Covid has taught me the most when it comes to me, my horse(s) and the barn ... take each day at a time. Worry about what you can change; the other things will take care of themselves.

What Covid has taught me the most when it comes to me, my horse(s) and the barn ... live for the moment. I realized I took for granted the shows, lessons and just making plans! Every minute I spend with my horse is a gift.

Discipline focus: English/Country English Pleasure

The person who inspired me to get involved with Arabian horses ... I spent my summers of middle school at an Arabian breeding farm in Michigan with Ted and JoAnne Tees and a little mare, Fleetwind’s Twin Anna.

The person who inspired me to get involved with Arabian horses ... my two grandfathers. One gave me money to buy a horse and saddle. The other took me to an Arabian farm.

My proudest moment within the Arabian horse industry ... when all my friends who supported me in getting into breeding Arabians were able to join me in the Scottsdale winner’s circle.

My proudest moment within the Arabian horse industry ... breeding horses that went on to win national titles, and watching my daughter Abby show our horses.

The one thing I look forward to the most about U.S. Nationals ... the amazing animals across the disciplines and the lively fans.

The one thing I look forward to the most about U.S. Nationals ... the PEOPLE first and foremost! The horses are a close second.

What Covid has taught me the most when it comes to me, my horse(s) and the barn ... that wearing a mask is a small price to pay to attend a horse show.

What Covid has taught me the most when it comes to me, my horse(s) and the barn ... I miss being around my friends. Thank God for my horses! They are my therapy. AND they are therapy horses for STARS, a local organization serving physically, emotionally and mentally challenged clients. They LOVE the work and so do I!

What inspired me to get involved with Arabian horses ... the Arabian horse itself inspired my involvement with this magnificent breed.

The person who inspired me to get involved with Arabian horses ... June Yahola, breeder of Pyro Thyme SA, inspired my sister and I to take lessons with Arabians. The rest is history! My proudest moment within the Arabian horse industry ... watching my husband Colby win the Open Half-Arabian Western Pleasure and Reining Futurity at U.S. Nationals.

My proudest moment within the Arabian horse industry ... having my husband, parents, and aunt and uncle watch me win a National Championship on STLA C IM FONDAU.

The one thing I look forward to the most about U.S. Nationals ... a week away from school and work to hang with my barn family.

The one thing I look forward to the most about U.S. Nationals ... I love competing and seeing all my friends from all over the country!

What Covid has taught me the most when it comes to me, my horse(s) and the barn ... the barn is as essential as it gets.

ABBY JENSEN VHTC/CMPH Owner ~ Breeder ~ Amateur Discipline focus: English, Reining The person who inspired me to get involved with Arabian horses ... my mother, Gail. My proudest moment within the Arabian horse industry ... watching my retired reiner Zen work with Edward through the STARS Equitherapy program here in Steamboat. The one thing I look forward to the most about U.S. Nationals ... seeing all my friends and getting to compete with horses my mom and I bred. What Covid has taught me the most when it comes to me, my horse(s) and the barn ... the biggest change for me was lack of travel. My show horses are in AZ and GA, so getting to them has been difficult (I have only seen them once in OKC). Watching others slow down has made me realize I need to slow down. I’m working on it ...

Richard’s Lifelong passion for the equine world had early roots in his family’s business

in Colorado and was launched in the early 1970s with John Rogers Arabians in Walnut Creek, California. He went on to serve as head trainer for owner-breeder John Davidson

in Calabasas, California, until joining the team of Nichols-

DeLongpre’ in 1976 at their farm in Bridgewater, Connecticut. Richard was a valued trainer for NDL and assisted with their “glamour sales” of the 70s, along with subsequent sales when NDL relocated to Santa Ynez, California.

During this period with NDL, Richard was instrumental in

developing the apprentice programs at an Arabian horse facility. Many NDL apprentices have gone on to become successful

judges, trainers and breeders. Richard remained with NDL and later with DeLongpre’ Arabians until the operation ended in

2002. During his tenure as a trainer, Richard earned numerous Canadian and U.S. National Top Tens, as well as National and

Reserve National Championships in Halter, Western Pleasure, Pleasure Driving and English Pleasure.

Richard’s career path then shifted to horse show judging. He

has held Registered status with the Arabian division for over 30 years and is currently a USEF Registered judge with National Show Horse, Western, Friesian, Andalusian, Morgan and

Shetland breeds, and has judged each of their National and

World shows on numerous occasionzs. Richard is a recorded

judge in the Saddlebred, Saddle Seat Equitation, Hackney and Roadster divisions with USEF. He is also a senior judge with

both Miniature Horse Association – AMHA and AMHR – as well as with the Pinto Horse Association.

In 2012 Richard was inducted into the Pinto Association’s Judges Hall of Fame. Richard has been an invited judge

throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Europe and South Africa. Well known and highly

regarded for his honesty, fairness and integrity, Richard enjoyed widespread respect among his peers and the general public. ~ Courtesy of AHA’s 2015 Judges Hall of Fame

Horseman Judge Gentleman & Friend

I had the honor and privilege of sharing center ring with Richard Petty on numerous occasions over the years. It has given me pleasure and solace over the last few days to read comments from scores of adoring exhibitors on social media since his passing, calling him their “favorite judge.” He deserved that high praise. Richard was that good and he absolutely loved judging horse shows and could relate to all exhibitors. In his day, he was a top rider, trainer and exhibitor himself. He handled some of the best Arabians in the country and won many National and Regional Championships on horses that we still revere and remember. He knew how hard it is to get a horse properly presented and appreciated both the effort and the end result. When he walked the line and spoke, it was to give genuine praise or encouragement. Once, when judging a huge Regional show together, it was during a halter class that a nervous amateur was unaware that Richard was right behind her. She hauled off to whip the ground and caught Richard upside the head instead. It knocked his glasses off his head and onto the ground. “Shannon!” he yelled, “find my glasses! I can’t see!” As I dropped down to find his wayward glasses, I made some silly remark about the bad timing of this event, which started both of us laughing. By the time I stood up to hand them to him, a huge red welt was already starting to form on his temple. He could have been excused from the ring, it met all the criteria, but he straightened up his glasses as well as he could, put them back on, went right over to that exhibitor and put his arm around her and spent the next few minutes speaking to her softly and consoling her. By the time we got back into center ring after the class, it was purple and looked angry and painful. Someone remarked about his concern for the exhibitor and he said, “I have been there! That happened to me!” then proceeded to tell us his story about being a young trainer in Connecticut when he first went to work for Mike Nichols. He was showing a halter horse and smacked the judge in the face by accident. It hit him so hard, that the medic called for an aid car and they hauled him off the grounds to treat him. The whole show came to a halt and when they brought him back to judge the remainder of it, he was sporting a big white eye patch for the rest of the weekend. Everybody on the grounds knew who the perpetrator was, the new kid from California. I will never forget the way he told this story on himself; his eyes were twinkling and he had all of us rolling in laughter. That was just one example of our Richard. There he sat, beautiful and looking perfect, but it was easy for him to share a personal imperfection in his own humble and self-effacing manner. With all of his accomplishments both in the show ring and judging breeds all over the world, not once did I ever hear him brag or compare himself or his experiences with anyone else’s. That wasn’t his style. With great joy, there is great sorrow. I’m blessed to call him my friend. We miss you Richard. Love, Shannon Ar abian Horse Times | 387 | Volume 51, No. 3

EQUINE TIPS Gone Are The Days Of The Handshake Agreement by Johanna Sheehe, ESQ. I was once told by a long-time horse trainer that the sale of a horse is very straightforward, “You pay me the money, I give you the horse.” Unfortunately, the purchase of a horse is almost never that simple. Although “handshake agreements” are commonplace in many everyday transactions, the failure to memorialize the terms of an equine sale can result in unnecessary disputes and even costly litigation. While the conditions of each sale are unique, the following elements are recommended for inclusion in a written contract to properly record the transaction. Although this list is not exhaustive, the inclusion of these terms should eliminate confusion and establish the conditions of the sale for both buyer and seller. Be sure to consult your own state’s laws for guidance; some states, such as California, Florida, and Kentucky, require specific terms to be included with written bills of sale.

THE PARTIES Who are the parties to the transaction? Identify the buyer and the seller of the horse, including full names, addresses, and telephone numbers. Keep in mind that the name of the seller should match the horse’s registration papers. Inconsistencies between these two names could lead to questions about the seller’s authority to sell the horse and the validity of the purchase. Indeed, the buyer would be wise to verify the horse’s registration details to correct any mistakes or deficiencies prior to the transaction’s completion.

contracts explicitly address warranties made from buyer to seller to eliminate fraud and unfair and deceptive trade practices. Florida Administrative Code requires a buyer to verify that any warranty or representation relied upon in acquiring the horse is set forth in writing as part of the bill of sale. Such language puts the burden on the buyer to ensure that all promises upon which they rely to make the purchase are memorialized and has the effect of disclaiming oral statements and representations made by a seller that are not in the contract. In contrast, if the horse is sold with no warranties—a common occurrence—it is sold in “as is” condition; the contract should reflect this. Although “as is” language will not always protect a seller from claims of sales fraud, language which explicitly states that the sale is being made with no warranties is helpful if a dispute does arise.

PRE-PURCHASE EXAMINATION It is common for a horse to be inspected by a veterinarian prior to the purchase. The occurrence of a “pre-purchase exam” should be documented in the sales contract, particularly if the buyer decides against conducting an examination. A statement setting forth that the purchaser was provided the opportunity to conduct a pre-purchase examination, but declined, can protect the seller if questions arise post-purchase regarding the horse’s soundness.

IDENTIFY THE HORSE

SIGNATURES

Describe the horse clearly. Include the full name, age, sire and dam, registration number (if applicable), gender, breed, and any distinguishing characteristics, such as color or markings. Consider also including applicable nominations.

Both parties to the transaction must sign the sales contract. If a minor is involved, a parent or guardian must sign the contract. In the case of a corporation or business, ensure that the signatory is authorized to sign the contract on behalf of the entity.

PRICE & CONDITIONS

COMMISSIONS

State the sales price and any other conditions of the sale. For example, will the buyer make a single payment, or will there be installment payments? If doing installments, set forth the exact amount of the installments, any interest, the dates the installments are due, and how the payments will be made. Who will retain possession of the horse, and its registration papers, until the purchase price has been paid in full? It is also prudent to set forth the repercussions of the buyer’s failure to make timely payment. Have the parties agreed to a trade? Include all the details of the trade in the agreement to ensure that all parties fully appreciate the conditions of the sale.

It is common for agents to act on behalf of a buyer or seller and to receive a commission from the horse sale. If a commission is at issue, it is advisable to set forth the terms in writing.

WARRANTIES If promises have been made regarding a horse’s physical condition or abilities, consider documenting these warranties in writing. This includes oral statements made by a seller upon which a buyer relies in making their decision to purchase the horse. Some states, such as Florida, have legislated to ensure that equine sales

The purchase of a horse can be a significant investment. In order to protect the interests of all parties, it is essential that the parties prepare and execute a written contract which memorializes, at least, the essential terms and conditions of the transaction. The preparation of a written contract is a cost-effective way to eliminate misunderstandings, fraud, undisclosed commissions, and avoid expensive litigation.
