COMMENTS from the publisher U.S. NATIONALS IS ALWAYS A WINNER Like many others, when I went to the U.S. Nationals this year, I was just grateful that we were able to have a show. And also like many others (I hope), I came home elated. Elated—in a pandemic year? How on earth did it happen? It happened because we as a community were able to do what was necessary, despite all obstacles, to have a great show. We’d had a taste of what was possible at Youth and Mid Summer Nationals, but Tulsa went above and beyond expectations. For a week or so, we put away our concerns and just enjoyed each other, our horses, and the topnotch competition. I think it was that standard of excellence that most impressed me. There were not only our familiar favorites, the horses who set the standards in their divisions, but also a formidable group of rising stars, promising to define the future in all disciplines. We saw young trainers taking the opportunities to really shine, and were encouraged to hear of so many horses changing hands. That was indicative not only of the quality of the Arabians there, but also that owners were planning their show campaigns for next year. All of that made for such a good experience that it was almost like a normal year. Credit where credit is due, AHA did a great job of putting together a show under the most difficult circumstances, and the Arabian horse people did the rest. Before I sound like Miss Sunshine, let me note that of course not everything was perfect. The weather could have been nicer, and to a person, we all wished that we weren’t in the middle of the worst pandemic in 100 years. In short, we all pulled together. People were happy despite the weather, the pandemic and the political stress. In the second half of October, we were in our world—the world of the Arabian horse. What a perfect way to end/remember the year!

SF AFTERSHOC+ The Proof is in the Progeny SF Aftershoc needs no introduction as an established sire, topping Leading Sire charts of U.S. National winners for the last three years in a row. There is, however, recent buzz shared by his following of loyal breeders, current owners of Aftershoc get, and those that were wowed by his progeny’s 2020 National Champion results, surrounding his acquisition by Hagale Family Arabians LLC from his long-time owners, the Flynn Family. For those selecting SF Aftershoc for the future of their own breeding program, he will now stand at Chrishan Park Arabians in Springfield, Missouri for the foreseeable future. Jim & Mary Martha Hagale, no strangers to owning a significant sire of the breed, previously owned the accomplished sire, Mamage from 1994-2001. Now they have found their next super sire in SF Aftershoc, a profound sire producing not only game-changers in the English arena, but siring National Champions and money-winning get across all disciplines! The Hagale Family and the Chrishan Park team look forward to leading SF Aftershoc into the future, and know that his loyal breeders will continue to support him, and that Aftershoc’s domination as a sire in programs like the AEPA (his get earning nearly $100,000 in payouts) as well as his Leading Sire performance status at the U.S. Nationals will continue to attract new breeders for the future!

Stay tuned for the full story in 2021!

High Spirits and Triumph In A Year Of Uncertainty by ALLY EDWARDS

With all the uncertainty that has plagued 2020, it was a wonder all year if the U.S. National Championship Show would take place during the fall in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Thanks to the incredible show commission and the willingness of the exhibitors’ help to make it happen, Nationals was able to take place. Not only did it happen, but it saw a huge number of entries. Upwards of 1,800 horses showed up to compete for a national title; competitors coming from all over the country—a few even from Canada—in hopes of going home with a rose garland. Unfortunately, Tulsa was rain and low temperatures for the majority of the show, but a little weather didn’t slow down any trainers and exhibitors eager to have a good show, filling three rings. The Ford Truck arena was the stage for performance classes including western, hunter, saddle seat, and other specialty classes like show hack and side saddle. Next door in the Mustang arena, working western was in full slide! The show started off with working cow classes, followed throughout the week with reining, ranch riding and horsemanship. The Pavilion transformed for trail competition early, but later catered to in-hand breeding presentations. A show in themselves, with music blasting and a constant supply of food and drink for its spectators, halter competition did not disappoint. There were cuts for almost every main ring class filled with top quality horses. There were so many, that an extra session was added on Wednesday night to accommodate all the sections added. Even with qualifications waived due to many Class A shows being cancelled, all were stunning and at the top of their game. First Cytation and Klint Black were prime examples; two horses still in peak performance, despite being 20 years old. First Cytation took home the first performance national championship in the Arabian Western Side Saddle with owner Sarah Paripovich, and Klint Black took one of the last, going national champion in the Arabian Hunter Pleasure Open with Stephanie Sage Walker on the final night of the show, proving when horses enjoy what they are doing, and are loved and cared for, competing at the top level knows no age limit. One of the most exciting classes of the show was the last championship Saturday night: Arabian English Pleasure. It was a star-studded event in terms of a national’s class with four of the top English stallions, VJ Royal Heir, Vegaz, Prosuasion, and Life Inthe Fazt Lane going head-to-head, but once again, it was a mare who rose to the top, showing the boys how it’s done. Heirs Noble Love earned the national championship title for the third year in a row with Life Inthe Fazt Lane going reserve. Some of the most beautiful classes ever seen, many said, took place in the halter arena. Most notable was multi-winner Lisa Gaudio, breeder and owner of three Half-Arabian siblings sired by Vitorio TO and out of her treasured mare Kyrie Elleison. The miracle story of Lisa’s triplets got even more magical this year with numerous unanimous championships for all three, cleaning up in both the U.S. and Canadian Futurities, as well as a handful of additional halter titles. It was also the first year that Performance Halter was offered as a class, allowing for more people and horses to experiment with the in-hand discipline.

Ar abian Horse Times | 34 | Volume 51, No. 4

The performance futurity classes are always on the “must see” list. Competing at such a young age, with U.S. Nationals being some of these horses’ first show, and that they are willing to perform and compete at this level with so little experience is exciting to watch, especially the AEPA, AWPA, and AHPA classes, which offer big money to winners of both purebred and Half-Arabian English, western and hunter talent. The trust and bond riders have with these young horses is evident. This commitment from trainers and owners towards their horses leads to success from their futurity days and continues all the way into classes with their amateur owners. Even though restrictions were higher this year regarding spectators, the stands were still almost always filled with people watching their fellow exhibitors compete. Masks were a requirement whenever not on a horse, and most were very respectful of the rule, as there would be no show unless everyone was willing to make safety a priority. The beloved, big barn parties had to be kept to a minimum and other “normal” nationals activities weren’t able to happen, but that didn’t keep people from coming out to celebrate their horses and do whatever was necessary to do what they love most … show their horses. At the end of the day, they are what it’s all about and what brings everyone together in the first place. And with the year the way it’s been, no one wanted to stop this show from happening if they had anything to do about it! Congrats to all!

AHT High-Point Halter Breeders of the 2020 U.S. Nationals, Lisa Gaudio and James Kazanjian won a total of eight National Championship titles; seven (six of which were unanimous) with their three miracle Half-Arabian siblings by Vitorio TO and out of their precious mare Kyrie Elleison.

Vitorio TO took home AHT’s High-Point Halter Sire Award for Oak Ridge Arabians.

U S N

Personal: Sitting in the stands during the evening sessions with my dear friend, Susan Morey.

Unrelated: Watching some of the super talented young trainers have their moments to shine. It was so refreshing! —Katie Harvey Personal: Getting to have Nationals! It was wonderful to be with our Arabian horse family and beautiful horses. Unrelated: John Golladay’s excitement winning the H/A English Pleasure on Lake Afire. —Rebecca Skeeles

The 2020 U.S. Nationals was so different in so many ways, but so complete! The Halter quality was amazing, and the atmosphere was outstanding. MD Massima capturing the Yearling Filly Championship was our favorite moment. —Murray Popplewell Personal: Winning the ABS Arabian Yearling Colt class unanimously with our home-bred Kayde VH against heavy competition, thanks to Jeff Schall’s beautiful presentation. When he made an entrance unlike any ever seen before, he owned the arena and had the crowd behind him. We are thrilled! He was bred to be a performance horse, yet his quality and structure led him to be appreciated in the halter ring. The win was a culmination of so much. Carol Steppe has been an influence in how we breed. She told me many years ago to always breed hoping that you get a great colt; that way if you end up with a filly, you are thrilled. If you don’t believe in the cross enough to want a colt from it, you probably shouldn’t do it. To have the dam of this colt be the lovely Aristokayte who Carol bred and sold to friends Mark & Val Sylla made it even more special.

Unrelated: The group of incredible older horses that are still showing and competing and winning big prizes. Seeing the likes of Vegaz, Klint Black, First Cytation, Caliente Virtuoso, among others in the ring, was great to see. It is a testament to the horses as well as the care and training that our trainers do that these horses are happy, healthy, sound and not burned out at an older age to be able to do this. —Michael Van Handel Personal: Watching our 3-year-old, Nirvanas Afire CRF, go top ten in the Half-Arabian Country Pleasure Futurity class … first ribbon at the Nationals in 34 years!

Unrelated: Watching Laura Rodel win her first U.S. National Championship aboard SHF Rosemerry in the Arabian English Pleasure Futurity. It couldn’t have happened to a harder working and more deserved young lady! —Lori Davisson Personal: Spending time with friends and almost feeling like we were getting back to NORMAL! It was the most NORMAL we felt in 2020 and definitely the highlight of the entire year. Unrelated: The winners who truly showed joy for the moment and, most importantly, for their horse, like, Rick Gault and John Golladay … THE BEST! —Candy Conway

Personal: It was a great show with many great moments and a lot of great horses. Showing Vegaz in the open English Pleasure … what an amazing horse! With only nine months training after six years off and 17 years young, he loved it! We really appreciate all the support Vegaz has received and the crowd giving him a standing ovation. It was a great night! The great ones really are just great horses. And, of course, if I wasn’t in the tricolor with Vegaz, then why not let it be his son, Life In the Fazt Lane! “Eddie” took reserve in a very tough class for the second year in a row, a horse I started and sold to Nancy. It was a great night for Vegaz. Unrelated: Laura Rodel winning the 3-year-old English Futurity on the SF Aftershoc filly, Rosemerry, and one of my favorites, Ames Divine, going reserve in the Jr. English and champion in the Maturity with my good friend, Lara! —Chris Wilson Personal: Making my victory pass as Unanimous National Champion H/A Country English 60 & Over Champion … the ride of a lifetime! Thank you, Jesse Clinton! Unrelated: The National Championship ride by Andy Dearing in the H/A English Futurity class. —Lisa Blackstone Seeing Vegaz return to the show ring … it was such a thrill to see him show again! —Todd, Jennifer, and Annie Glomski Ar abian Horse Times | 38 | Volume 51, No. 4

U S N

Personal: The opportunity to show Heirs Noble Love, a horse I have loved since seeing her as a 3-year-old, was an experience I will forever cherish. Thank you, Joel and Ashton, Karlton and Mary Ann, and my parents, for making dreams come true! Unrelated: The Arabian English Open class was absolutely electric! It was an amazing class to watch with so many talented and decorated champions all together in the arena. —Emily Shippee The last class of the show, the English Pleasure of Champions! Vegaz was spectacular from start to finish … a true winner that was a true pleasure to watch! —Merrilee Lyons Personal: Showing in the Jackpot classes. It was my first year competing in them and I love how all the age groups can come together in one class! Unrelated: The quality of all of the horses competing was up from previous years, especially in the Futurity, Maturity and Jr. Horse classes. It’s exciting for the future of the Arabian horse! —Lindsay O’Reilly French Personal: Winning not only my first National Championship, but my second! It was an amazing show with two championships for me and a reserve for my trainer. I couldn’t have asked for anything more special. Unrelated: The need to stay masked and distanced from everyone made the show more difficult but didn’t take away from the thrill of the competition itself. Everyone did a great job and I hope everyone made it through without contracting the virus. —Janell Voss

Personal: The Arabian English Pleasure class has so many great horses in the ring at once! It was really fun to watch and gave us goosebumps to see two major breeding stallions compete against each other (VJ Royal Heir and Vegaz). It is especially cool to see Vegaz looking so amazing for his age and after two colic surgeries. He proved what a great show horse he is and to have his son Life Inthe Fazt Lane go reserve champion was very cool. Unrelated: Seeing the first COLTRANE babies hit the National show ring! It was fun to be ringside cheering them on to all their wins. —Peter & Lori Conway

Personal: My stallion, Affliction, winning the Arabian Country Open with my trainer Jim Lowe, followed by my other stallion, Life InThe Fazt Lane, winning for the second year in a row, Reserve Champion in the Arabian English. Can it get any better than that! Unrelated: I was really impressed by the attitudes of every competitor, trainer and groom, in coping with the weather and Covid19 restrictions. Real troopers. —Dr. Nancy O’Reilly Personal: Winning my first set of roses in the H/A Country English Pleasure Select!

Unrelated: Watching Game of Thrones win two national championships with Janelle Voss and a reserve national championship with Dalton Budd! Game of Thrones is such much fun to watch trot around the ring! —Jaime Stelzer-Fisher Personal: The purebred English Championships. Unrelated: Vegaz. —Rocky Higgins

Personal: Winning my first national championship ever, on my horse, Out West.

Unrelated: Colby Powell, my trainer, winning the Western Futurity. Our whole barn was so thrilled for him and it’s amazing to watch what Colby has been able to do with the young horses. —Katy Quigg

Personal: Our beautiful mare, Girl Crush, named National Champion in the AWPA class after overcoming a life-threatening injury. God took care of her! Unrelated: My friend, Meg Owings, after ten years of hard work and lots of blood, sweat, and tears, winning her very first top ten in the HalfArabian Western pleasure AAOTR 40-59 division. Her joy was something to see! —Janice Lorick Seeing Kola J in the Open championship. I am a big western pleasure fan! —Sheila Curley Personal: Winning the Arabian AWPA class on Girl Crush was a huge highlight for me and Claude Joerg winning the Arabian Jackpot class with Megga Starr+// was equally as exciting. Best ride he has ever had on his 17-year-old stallion! Unrelated: KW Micah with Joel Kiesner in the Arabian English Pleasure Junior Horse class. Incredible! —Rick Gault

Personal: As a sponsor of the AWPA classes, I always look forward to watching the Finals. The quality is fantastic, the stand-up is cool to watch and I enjoy helping hand out the awards. The AWPA has done a great job adding excitement to the western division!

Unrelated: Watching Stephanie Sage show Klint Black was really fun. They both looked great, and it was so nice to see them take home the roses! —Dr. Mark DePaolo Personal: Watching my 4-year-old hunter horse, BP Maserati, perform beautifully in the AHPA and Maturity classes. Being from Canada, we really didn’t know if we would be able to attend! Unrelated: Seeing Rick Gault win the AWPA class on Girl Crush. His reaction was priceless! —Lori Quinn

Personal: Placing first in my Hunter Pleasure cut on DLC Mister T. He and I are new to each other and what a lot of people don’t know is, that he bucked me off during my last practice ride at RBC and sent me to the hospital! I had a real confidence issue when I got to Tulsa, but Caralyn got me through it and “T” was a total gentleman. Rider error in the final kept us out of the ribbons but I was very pleased overall.

Unrelated: Caralyn Schroter and Blue J winning the H/A Western Side Saddle. He reminds me so much of my CBS Top Dog who Caralyn rode to the same award many years ago. I miss him all the time. —Nan Harley Personal: Winning my first National Championship on Barritzar in the Arabian Hunter Pleasure Jackpot class. That was the highlight of my riding career and one of the best days of my life!

Unrelated: Watching Life InThe Fazt Lane win Reserve National Champion in the Arabian English Pleasure Open for the second year in a row. He is breathtaking, and to know him at home like I do is such a wonderful experience. —Jill Kramer Personal: It’s pretty hard to beat the fantastic feeling of being placed National Champion. DM London Town+// and I have earned that honor six times, but this one was unanimous! Unrelated: I thought it was wonderful that so many folks sponsored extra awards for so many classes. The extra jackets, coolers, gloves and belt buckles allow us to brag to others who might not even know about our addiction! In this time of COVID-19, it’s so much fun to be wearing a mask that says “U.S. National Champion”! Thanks to all of the sponsors who went above and beyond to make this year special. —Peggy Weems

Personal: Going Reserve National Champion in the H/A Pleasure Driving AAOTD with Goldd Standard; it was a class we worked incredibly hard for and I couldn’t be prouder of Digger for such an amazing and fun drive! Unrelated: Klint Black finally getting his well-deserved National Championship in the Hunter & Vegaz absolutely owning the ring in the Open English. I was ringside for his work-off 10 years ago, so to be ringside again for that amazing, monumental class was incredible! —Morgan Runyon

Personal: Taking home National Champion honors in the Arabian Reining AAOTR, Intermediate, and Jackpot on Khaarga Harlequin. The U.S. Nationals was my last show with Harley before he went to his new home, so it was extra special to do so well. Unrelated: Colby Powell winning the Arabian Western Pleasure Futurity on Prime JP, owned by Paula Krost. For the last year, I have watched Colby work hard to prepare Prime for this class, and it was just an incredible, full-circle moment hearing them be called out as National Champions. —Kara Guy

AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL INVOLVED WITH THE U.S. NATIONALS We, the Ford Truck Arena judging panel, would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who worked to make the 2020 U.S. Nationals such an outstanding success. We would like to thank … ~ the U.S. Show Commission, Stan Morey, Diana Bein and all of the volunteers and staff, for working so hard to take care of us on a daily basis. ~ Melissa, our center ring organizer, for all of your hard work and long hours to keep everything running so smoothly. ~ Our ringmasters, who were on their feet all day, every day, for every class, and always with a positive attitude and a kind word. The work you do is never ending and you are the best in the business. ~ The paddock personnel, who worked in the most challenging of conditions to make sure the classes were timely and organized, But most importantly, we would like to thank YOU, the breeders, owners, exhibitors, trainers, and support staff, for believing in the Arabian horse and this horse show. It was an honor for us to adjudicate some of the best competition the U.S. Nationals has ever seen. The preparation, presentations, and performances were all accomplished to the highest level of professionalism and it was a privilege to stand in center ring and appreciate the depth of quality and pure talent of our beautiful Arabian and Half-Arabian horses. In a year of uncertainty, the love of the Arabian horse brought us all together and reminded us of how much we have in common and what can be accomplished when we unite to work towards a common goal. 2020 was a great year for the Arabian horse. Here’s to an even stronger and better 2021! With our sincere thanks, Donnie Bullock — Kelly Elm — Julie Goder-Larson — Bruce McCrea — John Power — Cathy Vecsey

“I think the perspective from center ring is important for many reasons. The classes this year were beyond incredible and placing just ten was almost criminal. Someday I’d love to have a guest program

for exhibitors to come down to center ring during one of the big shows to get a “real perspective” of a National quality class. It’s quite awe-inspiring!”  JOHN POWER

2020 U.S. NATIONAL JUDGES’ REVIEW

WHAT CLASSES STOOD OUT TO YOU? Leslie Connor: The quality throughout the In-Hand/Breeding division was very high. I would be hard-pressed to single out one particular class with so many outstanding individuals, however, two particular stars stood out for me, the National Champion 2-Year-Old Colt, Rhan Al Shahania, and National Champion Senior Mare, Pitonisa. Jeremy Harper: The quality and depth of all the halter classes was truly outstanding. A few standouts: ~ Yearling Colts. There were some outstanding horses that have me excited for the future of our breed! ~ Junior Arabian Mares. The depth of this class was incredible! I felt that there were several horses in this class that could have been pinned national champion. ~ Senior Arabian Mares. Judging this class in the Ford Truck Arena on finals night was a truly memorable experience. The mares put on a horse show! Van Jacobsen: The quality and depth of the breeding classes was exceptional! It is impossible to pick a single class or horse that stood out from the rest because there were so many great horses presented to the judging panel. The owners, breeders and handlers should be very proud of the horses that were presented. The Senior Mare and Senior Stallion classes were exceptional, and the young horses were beautiful and clearly have a bright future in front of so many of them. Kelly Elm: ~ The Purebred English Final was exciting! One go and tons of talent! ~ The Purebred Western Final was beautiful. ~ The Hunter Pleasure classes were deep and filled with quality. ~ I loved seeing the young horses in the Arabian & H/A AEPA Pattern classes. Undulatas First Love with John Golladay was spectacular. ~ The Warhorse and Juliette Dell in the H/A Pleasure Driving… what a beautiful picture! ~ Heirs Noble Love with Emily Shippee was incredible in the Arabian English AAOTR. There were so many more! I can’t say enough about the talented horses, amateurs and trainers that brought their best. Juli Goder-Larson: I think all the Junior Horse classes in all divisions were exceptional. Our industry certainly seems to be going in the right direction if these are any indication. Kudos as well, to the professionals who presented them so well. Bruce McCrea: This may have been the best show ever as far as quality and depth of competition. Some of these classes were just amazing! Our performance divisions have become more specialized and as a result, each division is full of great horses! The Hunter Pleasure horses have made the biggest leap; Open, Junior and Amateur age group classes were fantastic! The AHPA Arabian and Half-Arabian Futurity classes were great, and the English and western divisions, purebred and Half-Arabian, were also superb throughout all classes—the horses and

horsemanship were outstanding! One of my favorites horses was The Warhorse in Half-Arabian Pleasure Driving with Juliette Dell. Sheer elegance! One of my favorite classes was the Half-Arabian English Pleasure AAOTR 19-49 with No Strings Attached winning. It was an honor and pleasure to judge these great horses! John Power: I’d have to say every final of every class was amazing! Twenty of the best horses competing for the championship with it all on the line! The Open classes, as well as the amateurs, were so highly competitive, I could have easily pinned a Top Fifteen. Some of the best showmanship skills I’ve ever witnessed! Cathy Vecsey: All of the classes had exceptional quality, but for me, the significance of the horses showing in the Arabian Open English was really a special moment for me. It was a special moment for the breed to see horses of that stature all in the ring at one time. Brian Scoggins: The two Open Ranch Riding classes. I believe there was around 35 in each class. Any of the top five horses could have won. Jan Decker: Both Trail and Performance Halter classes had outstanding exhibitor quality and an incredible number of entries. Kathy Callahan-Smith: The Performance Halter quality and numbers were phenomenal. It was an honor to judge the first set of these classes offered at U.S. Nationals.

WITH QUALIFICATIONS BEING WAIVED FOR U.S. NATIONALS, HOW DO YOU FEEL THIS IMPACTED THE OVERALL COMPETITION AND QUALITY OF THE CLASSES? WHAT DO YOU FEEL WE CAN TAKE AWAY FROM THIS? Leslie Connor: Since I have no way of knowing which horses had qualified, and which ones had not, I can’t say how the numbers were affected by the qualifications being waived. It would be interesting to know if, perhaps due to lack of shows, or other reasons concerning the virus, some of the top winners this year were not able to qualify, and if that were the case, then it would have been a real shame to not have allowed them to show. If problems such as shows being canceled persist next year, then I would be in favor of waiving qualifications again. I will say that, I only observed one or two entries that might not have been shown, had qualifications been required, so, for any people who thought that, without qualifications, the quality would be diminished, their fears should certainly be alleviated! Jeremy Harper: The classes overall were large and I truly feel that the quality was as good, if not better, than in recent years. It was exciting to judge large, competitive halter classes again. I believe this showed our

breed that qualifications do not always mean our best horses are being shown. Waiving qualifications allowed some older horses the chance to come back and compete and they looked healthy and fresh! It also allowed some exhibitors who have budget constraints, the ability to show at nationals for the first time ever! What a great way to promote our amazing breed! Van Jacobsen: The quality of the breeding in-hand horses was truly exceptional. The classes were VERY competitive and had very nice numbers. Of course, we do not know what horses were “qualified” and which horses were shown without qualification, though we did see a few handlers that perhaps had not had as much “practice” with their horses; but they sure were having a good time showing at Nationals. The takeaway from this is that it is apparent people want to show their horses at all levels of competition. Kelly Elm: The quality of not only the horses, but the training and performances, was very, very good. I believe removing the qualifications due to COVID was the right thing to do this year, though I’m not sure there were many horses there that wouldn’t have found a way to qualify and attend if it was a normal year. It also gave trainers more time at home to get all of their horses schooled and ready to show, although fewer shows no doubt had a negative financial impact on many of them. I was concerned going into the show that without having to qualify, and attending practice shows, there may be fewer quality rides, but was I extremely pleased by the overall quality of horsemanship. Juli Goder-Larson: The quality overall this year was exceptional. I think people were afraid we would have a lot of horses showing that were non-competitive, but that certainly did not seem to be the case. The classes were very deep. I think the biggest impact it had was that horses were entered in more classes per horse. I don’t think this year can be compared to other years. Since many people may not have had the multiple local/regional level shows in their area to qualify for all the classes they normally compete in due to cancellations, perhaps they had more money to participate at the U.S. Nationals. That in itself is not good for the local shows, but might be a reason for some of the success of U.S. this year. Bruce McCrea: I don’t think the lack of qualifications affected the show. Sur, we saw a few that probably didn’t belong, but that was fine. We had amazing horses and they rose to the top. Hopefully, things will get back to normal so we can use the old qualifications or develop some new ones. We still need a way to support smaller shows and our Regionals. John Power: Without qualifications, it seemed more horses were entered in more classes. As I said in the first answer, the quality and the competition was outstanding, but we did end up seeing horses multiple times in different classes and many didn’t hold up well to it all. A little more restraint on how many classes you actually show your horse in would be good advice.

Cathy Vecsey: I thought the quality was beyond compare to any other year, but personally, I feel horses show in too many classes with this level of competition. I would like to see more timely scratches so the show commission can plan more adequately for exhibitors to have time to make a schedule to make the show easier on everyone, especially the horses. Nationals is not the show to plan on showing in a section where everyone advances and use it for a practice ride. Brian Scoggins: The quality did not suffer at all with no qualifications. Jan Decker: I don’t feel the lack of qualifications impacted the quality, and it may have helped the number of entries. I have very mixed emotions regarding qualifications at this time. Do we really need qualifications? That is the question. Time will tell. Kathy Callahan-Smith: For the classes I judged, I saw lots of new faces and horses, and the quality was high. The silver lining to a difficult year, was the qualifying requirements being waived. I think we have learned a lot about how our previous requirements may continue to change in the future.

HOW DID JUDGING DURING A PANDEMIC DIFFER FROM JUDGING ANY OTHER SHOW? DID YOU LOOK AT OR APPRECIATE THINGS ANY DIFFERENTLY? Leslie Connor: Apart from having to wear a mask at all times, I found judging to be quite normal. But, as is usually the case, we don’t fully appreciate certain freedoms until we no longer have them. Masks are an essential part of curbing the spread of the virus but knowing that, doesn’t make wearing them any more pleasant. I, along with everyone else, certainly look forward to the day when they are no longer necessary! Jeremy Harper: Obviously, having to wear a mask the entire time was different from judging during non-pandemic years. I am not sure my job as an official differed much beyond that. For me, it was truly such an honor to judge during a year where so much about our lives was not positive. Being an official at this year’s U.S. Nationals is a privilege I will carry with me for the rest of my life. The U.S. Show Commission, AHA Board, and all the employees and volunteers worked so hard to put on a great horse show, and I commend them for the blood, sweat, and tears it took to make the 2020 U.S. Nationals a reality! Van Jacobsen: We are all aware of the added safety measures taken during the show by everyone, but did it change anything about the judging? Not in my opinion. As a judge, I have a system to evaluate each horse and followed that system at the U.S. Nationals the same

2020 U.S. NATIONAL JUDGES’ REVIEW

way I do at any other shows. I did appreciate that so many people did their best to comply with the safety precautions so they could show their horses! Kelly Elm: I so appreciate the effort, passion, tenacity and camaraderie that it took by everyone that was involved with the show. It showed our love of and dedication to the Arabian horse and our shared community. I believe this show was one of the all-time great accomplishments of AHA and its members. It was important and beautifully executed. The main ring looked amazing! The only noticeable difference was not having a big crowd on Finals nights, but those that were there made it sound like the stands were full! Juli Goder-Larson: Other than having to wear a mask from 7:30 am till about 10 pm every day, from a judging perspective, not much was different. Because of the schedule, we didn’t have an abundance of spare time, so spent our time either at the show or hotel. It does make you appreciate the ability to even HAVE the show this year. It also makes you realize that our way of life is not guaranteed during a pandemic. Bruce McCrea: Judging wasn’t really impacted by the pandemic other than wearing our masks. We worked pretty hard; 12-15 hours a day for nine days. That’s a long time to wear a mask! John Power: Judging during the pandemic was not all that different for us as judges other than having to wear a mask all day. The obvious joy the exhibitors showed each and every class showed us how grateful they all were just to be able to be at the Nationals. Even when the weather really tried to beat them down, they were smiling and congratulating each other and their horses in the line up! A big “Well Done!” goes out to them all! Cathy Vecsey: I really enjoyed the overall attitude and energy of the show as if everyone was happy and excited to be there and just glad to have the experience. I think it made us appreciate the moments and the memories. Though I am not sure what made it tougher, the pandemic or the weather .... Brian Scoggins: I was able to stay in my own camper which was very nice. I appreciated the work done on the horses. Jan Decker: The biggest thing was wearing a mask or face covering. It makes it difficult to express a smile to the exhibitors—I missed that. Verbal communication was also more difficult to give exhibitors instruction as the voice was muffled. Kathy Callahan-Smith: Judging in a mask certainly was a challenge, especially when trying to give instructions to exhibitors or a scribe. However, it was worth every minute in order to be able to judge this year. Traveling by air was a real adventure, and things like COVID certainly make us appreciate the good times.

AS A RESULT OF COVID19, WHAT POSITIVE CHANGES DO YOU FEEL WILL OCCUR FOR THE ARABIAN HORSE INDUSTRY IN 2021? WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CONCERNS? Leslie Connor: At this time, as a result of the pandemic, the only positive change in the Arabian horse industry I can possibly foresee in 2021 is that, for however many shows that are able to be held, people will appreciate those opportunities more than they would otherwise. I am concerned though, that the majority of our population will not be able to be vaccinated until mid-year, so there may still be travel restrictions between states, etc., that will inhibit showing horses. So, again, I would think that waiving qualifications for Nationals again next year would be the most prudent decision. Jeremy Harper: My hope is that everyone has realized that working together is the only way our industry will move forward in a positive manner. If Covid has shown us anything, it is that we are so much stronger as a united front and we can overcome any adversity that is thrown at us. For me, the largest concern I have is the use and misuse of Social Media to air grievances about our industry. I have found it particularly disturbing to see licensed officials calling out other licensed officials publicly for supposedly having ulterior motives or doing a less than acceptable job. Everyone in this industry wants to make it better I believe, but absolutely nothing positive comes from complaining or blaming others on public media platforms. If people are interested in creating lasting change, I encourage them to get involved locally with their clubs and attend both Convention and the AHA Judges schools when they are again available. Van Jacobsen: This pandemic has made every one of us appreciate what we have and enjoy the simple pleasures again. I am hopeful that in 2021 the pandemic will be under control and we will be able to enjoy horse shows like we have pre-COVID. My concern is, of course, that the pandemic is not under control. Kelly Elm: The excitement and enthusiasm that this show generated under extreme circumstances was terrific. I’m sure it will carry forward to next year. I am concerned that if qualifications are completely removed going forward, the smaller club shows may not be able to make it, and there will be fewer places for newcomers and our young horses to get the experience they should have to compete at the National level. Juli Goder-Larson: I feel perhaps the biggest positive was watching our association and show commission demonstrate how flexible they can be in order to have the show, and they deserve a big thanks. Many of these changes that were thinking outside the box could apply to future years.

AS A RESULT OF COVID19, WHAT POSITIVE CHANGES DO YOU FEEL WILL OCCUR FOR THE ARABIAN HORSE INDUSTRY IN 2021? WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CONCERNS? (cont.) My only concern would be that we saw a number of people not wearing masks. No matter how you feel about them, it is required for the horse show, and I am concerned we would be fined or not be approved because of it in the future if we have another requirement like that. Bruce McCrea: Let’s just all hope and pray that the world gets back to some normalcy. John Power: The pandemic forced many shows to be canceled and opened up qualifications for Regionals and Nationals. By this happening, I think it showed us that we have essentially saturated ourselves with too many horse shows that are failing because of too few entries. We also have seen that without qualifications, the need to show in a class becomes purely educational and for the enjoyment of the competition. In 2021, shows should have fewer classes with more horses. Better competition can be a result we didn’t see coming out of this but one we should continue to strive for. Less classes per session and per day will result in a better show experience for everyone involved. I look forward to a safe and successful 2021! Cathy Vecsey: I think Covid has made us aware of how much our Arabian horse life means to us and how much we really do love to spend time with our horses and our friends. Hopefully, this will change the focus of horse shows away from qualifying and turn the focus back toward showing for fun and showing to train horses and riders to be better competitors and not just to get a point so they can advance to the next level. And I truly hope the Class A shows can grow and benefit from this new mindset. They are the backbone of our industry and need our support. Brian Scoggins: My biggest concern is that the small clubs, show barns, and trainers will be unable to survive this pandemic. Jan Decker: I can’t think of any positive changes needed to our horse show world. My concerns are mainly the unknowns as we go forward into the new year. USEF says Covid-19 guidelines are to continue through 2021. Waiving of qualifications or not will determine the structure of next year’s horse shows. As of today, qualifications for 2021 are up in the air (the Board of Directors will determine this at their Convention meeting). We are waiting to see how to structure shows in 2021 based on Covid-19 expectations of facilities/government regulations and other factors that impact our show world. Kathy Callahan-Smith: I think AHA did a great job trying to help our Association stay safe and continue to enjoy and show horses. The Emergency Response Team met every day for months to keep up with our ever-changing world. The fact that we were able to have three national Arabian shows this year, is amazing!

You Have Lemons? I See Lemonade Bob Battaglia has observed the Arabian horse industry since childhood; he began training in 1966 and opened his f irst public stable in 1970. He’s long since lost count of the number of national champions he produced, from his f irst, 1978 U.S. National Champion in English Pleasure, Featurette; through the youngest English winner, multi-champion Gai Argosy; through such modern names as Magalad and Second Sight. As importantly, he mentored some of the industry’s most decorated amateurs. Since “retirement” a few years ago, he has consulted for owners, trainers and amateurs, and is especially well known for developing exhibitors’ showing skills. His observations here reflect more than half a century of experience in Arabian horses. What I’m going to say may sound crazy to you, so please, just take a minute to go with me on this: the Arabian horse breed and its community are in a wonderful place. If we want to, we can put the industry where it needs to be, on a path of growth that will lead to a solid future. Those who were at the U.S. Nationals and, earlier, at the Youth and Mid Summer Nationals, may catch what I mean. I say “crazy” only because in 2020 it’s darn hard, really, to define much of anything as “wonderful.” But I’m convinced, based on what I saw and felt—some of which was driven by the unusual circumstances of the pandemic—that we have a great opportunity. Here’s where I believe we are. After coming back from the Youth and Mid-Summer National Championships, I was excited and impressed with the quality of the horses, riders and trainers. Tulsa just confirmed that view. The horses are better than ever and the training techniques have improved too. The quality of the classes in each division was incredible. I particularly enjoyed the breeding/halter; the size of the classes had increased and they were such a pleasure to watch, which is good, because we need more breeders. In performance, I think we hit another level this year. Watching hunter and western, as well as English, was incredible. In the recent past, it has seemed to me that many trainers and amateurs were so hungry that they over-rode, trying to do more than their horses were capable of. This year, people seemed to achieve that critical balance of control, pushing their horses, but rarely going over. I was extremely impressed with everybody overall. In fact, my only complaint was that the standard of English performance has been raised so high that it was sometimes hard to tell the difference between country, English and park, except in the behavior of the horses. What also struck me about the show was that despite concerns about safety, the numbers held steady from past years. The crowd of people may not have been huge (mostly exhibitors and their families), but it was sincere. They were having a good time. All around, it was a striking success—so, what can we learn and use in the future?

by BOB BATTAGLIA

For one thing, this year, horses didn’t have to qualify to be entered at Nationals. With the lack of shows in the summer, qualifying was impossible and that became a blessing. It you had a horse you felt was good enough, you could come, compete, and have fun doing it. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Ar abian Horse Times | 250 | Volume 51, No. 4

Why not do that every year? Of course, we would have to retain some of the larger regional shows—and, I hope, the wonderful Mid Summer Nationals—but why not otherwise focus on having many, many more local, fun shows? One- and two-day affairs where everyone could go easily and at less expense. A large regional show can run a tab of $5,000 to $8,000, and if you have to qualify for Nationals, that adds up. How many people can do that multiple times a year? Plus, let’s face it, Nationals is a 12-14 day commitment if you’re really going to show. Going to local shows, you can have a lot of fun and probably get more practice because you can go more often. And if you’re going often, no one show would have to cover every class; some disciplines could be at one event and some at others. If you’re there with your friends, you’ll likely see more of other divisions as well as your own, and if you bring non-horse friends, it would be easier for them to learn about what you’re doing. I’d also suggest that on a two-day event, we show only at night, so that exhibitors could socialize during the day. The enthusiasm I saw at U.S. Nationals led me to believe that this is a fantastic opportunity to change the way we’ve been doing things: we can not only satisfy people’s desire to show their horses, but also grow the Arabian community’s grassroots. Given the potential for that, it would seem feasible that some regional organizations, in lieu of staging a regional show, could shift attention to helping member clubs put on more local competitions.

For years, we’ve all talked about how to expand and improve the Arabian industry. This year has given us insight into how much our people love showing their horses. Folks took a step back and considered what was important in their lives; they had to make real choices on where to go and what to do, and I believe that their involvement with the horses and their friends came out high on the list of priorities.

Multi-National Champion Second Sight.

So, let’s go with making more opportunities to get together and compete, reasonably timed and priced. Let’s keep the Mid Summer Nationals, in conjunction with the Youth Nationals. That gave everyone a chance to appreciate the broad spectrum of the industry (youth and adult), while still providing each their own spotlight. This year, no one knew what to expect. I predict that next year, we’ll see even higher attendance there. And again, dropping the need to qualify will, I think, boost participation even further. As long as I’m on the topic of improvement, let’s not forget the importance of Academy programs. That goes hand-in-hand with “local.” We have to give newcomers a place to break in before requiring a large financial commitment. That said, we also need to realize that keeping a couple of horses who are not income-earning can be pricey for some barns before the program pays its way. Perhaps here AHA could help with financial support until some Academy students are in a position to buy horses and show on a higher level. Let’s remember too, that Academy shows don’t have to be big or fancy. A few barns getting together will do; what’s important is that new people can compete and see if they really like it before getting out their checkbooks. They say every cloud has a silver lining. Without diminishing the tragic effects of Covid-19 in any way, I’d like to see the Arabian community take what we can from this experience and turn our future into gold. n

2020 Arabian National Breeder Finals & Silver Sire Futurity September 16-19, 2020 WestWorld, Scottsdale, AZ

I

t was a tough year, but the Arabian National Breeder Finals horse show brought out the best in people. With over $125,000 paid out by the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona, plus the Silver Sire Futurity prize money offered, exhibitors were happy to be at the show and followed the safety rules—as well as those spectating—their love of the Arabian horse on display.

“The success of the Arabian National Breeder Finals was much better than we could have imagined,” shared Show Manager, Taryl O’Shea. “We added performance classes this year which accounted for more than half of the 247 horses at the show, and the majority of the halter/ breeding horses at the show were the best in the industry. The championship halter classes

are always exciting and watching the quality of the competition was second to none. The Liberty class also had some amazing horses and was really fun to watch.” The performance divisions created a lot of enthusiasm, allowing those there, to experience action all day. As it was so well supported and fits into the schedule nicely, there are plans to offer performance next year; it being a nice crossover with halter owners who also brought their performance horses. Amidst the challenges this crazy year presented, the success of the Breeder Finals and Silver Sire Futurity was in stark contrast to the dark days of the past and shown a light on the resilience of those who seek companionship with what only brings joy ... the Arabian horse.

Women In The Industry K i m b e r l y Ve r H a g e , D V M

Number of years in the Arabian horse industry: 35 How did your association with the Arabian horse begin? As a child I wanted a 7-year-old dapple grey, Arabian gelding, so, my love for the Arabian horse started before I actually had one; but my first horse couldn’t have been more different: a 6-year-old, bay, Quarter Horse gelding, and he was the love of my life. After becoming a trainer, you decided to become a veterinarian. Why? Actually, I grew up dreaming of becoming a veterinarian or a jockey, so, I guess I have sort of fulfilled both of those dreams.

Ar abian Horse Times | 293 | Volume 51, No. 4

Prince LOA+// It takes a very special and unique personality to tackle vet school and training horses. How would you credit yourself to having accomplished this? I know I couldn’t have done it without an incredible team. What were some of the biggest challenges? The biggest challenge of vet school was leaving whatever I thought I knew at the door. It was humbling to say the least. One of the best decisions I ever made was continuing to train while attending vet school, because honestly, it kept me from completely losing my confidence. Training and the horses were the only part of my life where I felt like I knew what I was doing. While in vet school and training full time, did you ever consider giving up at any point? How did you persevere through it? I never considered giving up; but my faith, family and friends definitely played a part in my success and fortitude. You are known for thinking outside the box when it comes to training horses. Where does this come from? The horses actually taught me to think outside the box. Every horse is different, just like every human is different. To me it’s crazy to try and train every horse in the same manner. Similar yes, but I learned a long time ago to listen to the horse and let them guide me. Many if not ALL difficult horses have a real reason for why they have become non-compliant. I have found every horse can be helped if you listen to them and earn their trust. How has what you have learned as a vet changed your outlook and/or attitude towards your training methods? Mostly my attitude has evolved. I have a unique insight that not many have had the opportunity to experience. My history of training and working with vets to keep my horses healthy and happy to perform at top levels and now being a doctor, allows me to see the situation from all sides.

How has your experience as a horse trainer served/ benefited you as veterinarian? I know how to handle a horse properly and I know how to read a situation to keep my patients, myself, the owners and my staff safe. My ability to actually train a horse and earn its trust allows me to help each horse as an individual. Some horses who are phobic and tense with the veterinarian need a little extra time spent with them to teach them to relax, stand quietly and trust, and rushing is not the answer. Trust is the key to the horse’s soul. Is there anyone specifically that stands out to you as a mentor/inspiration in either fields of your career? What’s the most beneficial thing you took away from this relationship(s)? This list would be very long and I feel like no matter how hard I try, it would never be complete, but I will say I really miss my very dear friend and mentor, Dr. John Sparks. How do you plan to balance your time between your vet work and training? With an excellent team to be certain. Life is all about balance and I am still working at getting that right. Probably like everyone else. Originally, what did your dream horse look like? Has that image since changed? Originally my dream horse was that 7-year-old, dapple grey, Arabian gelding. Now I just want an athletic individual with a good work ethic any day.

Elizabeth Haven and Affirmativ Actionn with Kimberly.

Where do you see yourself in the horse world 10 years from now? I hope I have touched a lot of horsemen and women and helped them to understand the importance of prevention, pre-habilitation, proper rehabilitation and integrative medicine. What stamp do you hope to leave on the Arabian horse community? Service with dignity for the horses and enhancing the human animal bond. What is a perfect day for you? Get up when I want but not too late, say 8:30; coffee, trail ride at the beach, good food and company, sunset, sit around fire, in bed by 10 pm. Do you have any superstitions? Always listen to my gut. What is your favorite meal to cook and why? Chinese, because to have all the different dishes ready at the same time requires a lot of cooking, on one stove, all at once in a frenzy but controlled. Sounds like a horse show! What is one thing you never travel without? My Rosary. What do you like to do to unwind from a busy work week? Hike with my dog Daisy. n

Arabian Horse Association

2020 Convention Resolution Review with CHELSEA WESSON

The resolutions for the 2020 AHA Virtual Convention were an assortment of new classes, housekeeping, and pandemic-inspired items. All seventeen resolutions were approved. The delegates first had to approve Resolution 1-20, which allowed for electronic voting in AHA Elections. Resolution 2-20 established Emergency Provisions to help AHA and, in particular, the Executive Committee to have the ability to postpone or cancel the Annual Convention in case of a national crisis. Both of those resolutions were, of course, inspired by the current pandemic. Resolution 3-20 - AHA Executive Vice President position changed to Executive Director. The Executive Director will be the highest-ranking executive in the organization with ultimate responsibility for making managerial decisions. This stems from a decrease in AHA staff, as well as the consolidation of Marketing and National Events under one Director position.

Resolution 10-20 - Fair way created to break ties … that can occur in the working western division. This allows shows to hold these classes more efficiently. Resolutions 11-20 through 15-20 - Creation of new classes: ~ Ranch Reining ~ Ranch Horse Working Cow ~ Ranch Cutting ~ Versatility Ranch Riding ~ Ranch Horse Conformation With the popularity and growth of the Ranch Horse classes, these will give the horses and exhibitors more showing opportunities at competitions. These classes are all in effect as of December 31, 2020 or when approved by USEF/EC. That means we can start seeing them offered as rated events in 2021.

Resolution 4-20 - Only one Steward or Dressage Technical Delegate necessary to oversee an event offering both breed restricted dressage and open dressage classes. It is no longer necessary to hire a separate C2 Steward or DTD to cover each division.

Resolution 16-20 - Allows National classes to change venue (pandemic inspired) … such as moving classes from a National show which must be canceled. Any change of venue must be approved by the appropriate National Show Commission and the AHA Board of Directors.

Resolution 5-20 - Housekeeping update of language … to continue allowing licensed officials to judge in one section and allow horses trained by a member of his or her family to compete in different sections at the same event.

Resolution 17-20 - Western Horsemanship is exempt from using the MOS Scoring System.

Resolution 6-20 - Arabian division allowed to define Junior Exhibitor ages for Western Dressage classes at its shows … as the Junior Exhibitor ages for Western Dressage differ from those we use. This goes into effect December 31, 2020 or when approved by USEF/EC. Resolution 7-20 - Youth National Championship Show Commission allowed to modify the order of go … for Breeding and Gelding In-Hand classes to help avoid conflicts with other rings. Resolution 8-20 - Hunter jog rules updated to align with USEF Presidential Modifications made earlier in 2020. In working hunter classes, horses will now be required to trot a circle on a loose rein at the end of each over fences performance. This replaces stripping the tack and trotting for soundness in hand. This goes into effect December 31, 2020 or when approved by USEF/EC. Resolution 9-20 - All entries in open dressage classes must comply with Dressage rules … at shows offering both breed restricted and open dressage classes that Arabians & Half-Arabians are excluded from at AHA shows.

All in all, this group of resolutions shares a vision of looking forward as we continue searching for ways to improve and grow our shows. Thank you to all of the proponents and committees for your time and dedication! n

Perfinka has since returned to her native land of Poland, but not without leaving a legacy behind in the United States. After purchasing her mother, Perfirka, in 2014, Perfinka joined her mother in Minnesota last year. Leased by Cedar Ridge Arabians from Bialka State Stud, Perfinka (Esparto x Perfirka, by Gazal Al Shaqab) was an important decision in moving the Ames’ breeding program forward. “We were having some issues with getting Perfirka pregnant, so thought it would be nice to try and lease her daughter Perfinka,” says Lara Ames. “Perfinka had great success in the European and Middle Eastern circuit, but what she did for us here in the States is beyond what we ever imagined.” Little did they know what they had planned for her, “she accomplished and beyond,” shares Lara. “Perfinka came into my mom’s life and mine when there were not many bright days. Her first show was the Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas and the beginning of her undefeated record while in the United States. She followed that win with Champion Mare titles at the 2019 Arabian National Breeder Finals, the U.S. Nationals and 2020 Scottsdale AllArabian Horse Show. She was our angel.” Adding to that legacy, Cedar Ridge is very excited about their babies that will arrive this coming Spring, particularly a special filly out of Perfinka who they look forward to sharing. Doubly blessed, Perfinka’s dam, Perfirka, is also expecting a filly in 2021, who they hope will follow in her half-sister’s brilliant steps. Recently, Perfinka was chosen and sold to Abdulaziz Saleh Al Rajhi’s Al Rajhiat Stud in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where she will undoubtedly add to her beautiful tapestry. Cedar Ridge will continue to honor Polish bloodlines with the recent lease of Pinga (Gazal Al Shaqab x Pilar, by Fawor). She arrived in late August with plans to possibly show her but most definitely, add to her worldfamous lineage.

Top: ROYAL ASAD (*El Tino x Lumiar Ethna) | 2015 Stallion Owned by Royal Arabians, U.S.A. Middle: RAZEER SERONDELLA (*El Tino x Queen Ayda FWM) | 2017 Stallion Owned by Stormy Skye Arabians LLC, U.S.A. Bottom: LATIFA MAM (*El Tino x Lumiar Zingara) | 2018 Mare Owned by Hanaya Arabian Stud, Switzerland

Whether intentional or not, *El Tino’s breeder couldn’t have chosen a better name. Translated to mean, good judgement, he was paired, at the time, to the fairly unproven sire, DA Valentino, and unknown dam, Imprimista CF. Born 13th in his 2nd foal crop and currently the 2nd oldest producing sire from DA Valentino, *El Tino is the only sire of this cross (Imprimista CF passed away several months after his birth). After his exportation to South America and 2014 Brazilian National Champion Stallion title, *El Tino returned to the U.S. and stands at Cindy McGown and Mark Davis’ Royal Arabians. When asked what makes him stand out, Royal’s Manager of Sales and Marketing, Travis Rice, shares, “*El Tino is unique and brings a lot to the table in a multitude of ways, from producing extreme refinement and an amazing show horse attitude to overall Arabian type that we desire so highly. What he brings that is different is his overall personality which he contributes consistently to his offspring. All of his children are kind, generous souls with beautiful eyes that you just get lost in.” Certainly, he is accomplishing what all stallion owners dream of, becoming a household name for propelling the breed to a higher standard. And Rice avers, “*El Tino is doing that and in a powerful way.” Familiar show champion progeny of *El Tino to name a few, include Brazilian National, Las Vegas World Cup, Breeder Finals and Scottsdale International Champion Junior Stallion *Royal Asad, Brazilian National Champion Young Colt *Razeer Serondella, Brazilian National Champion Young Filly *Latifa MAM, and Brazilian National and Scottsdale Champion Filly *Rhadashah Arabco. “They represent Arabian type as in the definition of what Arabian type should be,” says Rice. “They are all beautiful silhouette horses with extreme attitudes and tiny, delicate, beautiful faces.” It is his consistency in passing on large eyes, tiny muzzles and extreme expression, that Rice believes has caused South American, European and Middle Eastern breeders to take notice of *El Tino and his progeny. “But most importantly,” Rice concludes, “he is producing the total horse in neck and shoulder, body and topline, with great movement … horses that can compete universally on any system.” So, what does the future hold for *El Tino? His story has just begun but is so far filled with proven results and good judgement. Ar abian Horse Times | 305 | Volume 51, No. 4

L.A. FLYNN (1955-2020)

Lee Ann Flynn, a renowned owner, breeder and competitor of National Champions in the Arabian horse community, was well known for being a passionate horsewoman and genuine friend. Her radiant personality welcomed all.

A competitor as well, L.A.’s most recent accomplishment was this past June at Region 14. She showed her homebred mare After Charm School, an Aftershoc daughter, to a unanimous win in the Half-Arabian Mare Championship. She was also a regular sponsor of the Awards Room at U.S. Nationals and always extended a helping hand to those in need. She was an advocate for all, horse and human. L.A. was a very gracious woman and had a huge impact in the industry, especially with younger girls, whom she always wanted to share her love for horses. One of those girls was Raven Gropp. “L.A. kept me under her wing, providing me with unimaginable opportunities throughout my Youth career, “she shares. “The one gift that I am eternally grateful for, is the gift of National Champion SA Rapid Fire. She always believed in me and simply wanted the best for me. She will be truly missed by both me and my parents for all her generosity throughout the years.” Remembering L.A. during their African trip, one-time client and close friend, Vicki Humphrey, shares, “L.A. had a soft heart for children. Some Masaii were having trouble getting their goats across the road so she got out of the jeep and herded the sheep with them! I’m pretty sure they ended up with a few extra dollars and candy in the deal. She had a wild, restless soul; I hope she is at peace. The horse industry will miss her enthusiasm and support for the Arabian horse.” She is survived by her two sons, EJ and Patrick, and five grandchildren, including a granddaughter named Elliot born this year who she helped name and will, hopefully, one day carry on L.A.’s legacy in the horse industry. n

IN MEMORIAM say, “WE HUNG ON FOR THE RIDE” ... and what a ride it was!

REGAN ROHL (1961-2020) Regan Rohl, age 59, of Fargo, ND passed away of natural causes in his home on Wednesday, November 25th, 2020.

Regan is survived by his loving wife Renae (Zahl) of Fargo, two sons Brent (Shayna) Rohl of Brookings, SD, and Brock (April) Rohl of Phoenix, AZ, one daughter India Rohl of Fargo, ND, three step-children Adam (Courtney) Bergman of Grand Forks, ND, Amy (Tom) Deacon of Fargo, ND and Ashley (Grant) Gagner, of Fargo, ND; two brothers Ryan (Char) Rohl of Lincoln, NE and Rick (Amy) Rohl of Bellevue, NE; nine grandchildren Calista, Rayanna, Pierson, Jackson, Piper, Alexander, Hudson, Lainey, and Brooks. He was preceded in death by his parents Allen and Sandy Rohl.

In 2006, they built their country home and started raising Arabian horses, a passion they both loved. They enjoyed spending time working together, having a glass of wine by the koi pond, or planning new adventures by the fireplace. The important things in Regan’s life were faith, family, and a passion for helping others. He touched countless numbers of individuals through guiding, teaching, and mentoring. His compassion and impact reached far beyond family and close friends. Regan truly lived life to the fullest. For anyone who knew him, you know what we mean when we

The Lervicks valued smart and people-friendly horses with sound dispositions. They bred for these characteristics, Out of Cyte among them, who has passed this on for generations to come.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the early summer of 2021 at the Rohl Farm.

Regan Allen Rohl, the son of Allen and Sandy (Kjellsen) Rohl, was born on August 29th, 1961 and raised in Volga, SD. He married Julie (Hope) in 1979 and they settled into the Brookings, SD area, and welcomed two sons into their family, Brent and Brock. Regan attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, and the family relocated to Thief River Falls, MN in December 1988 where he began his career as a financial advisor. In May of 2000, Regan and Renae joined in marriage, where Regan embraced three additional children Adam, Amy and Ashley. In 2001 they relocated to Fargo, ND, and welcomed their daughter, India Rose, into their family in 2003, who Regan once wrote about, saying, “What can you say when you see kindness, God’s love and hope in one person.”

HALSTEADS DEVEN+// (2002-2020) Halsteads Deven “was a one in a million horse,” states past owner Sarah Jayne Johnson. She made countless dreams come true for multiple owners. Bred by Richard Halstead and born in 2002 to Ariberry Bey V and Halsteads Devon, this strong chestnut mare was bred to trot.

OUT OF CYTE (1992-2020) Bred and owned by R O Lervick Arabians his entire 28 years of life, the black stallion Out Of Cyte (Cytosk x Amandi) lived out the Lervick’s hopeful expectations. His brief foray in the show ring proved his worth as a breeding stallion, which quickly turned into over 220 progeny of his own, among them over 112 champions and 45 national winners, such as his first born, First Cyte (x ROL Wild Flower, by Fame VF) and ROL Intencyty (x Intensive QCA, by Expodent), both national champion-producing halter and performance sires of 117 and 112 offspring respectively. Out of Cyte produced both beauty and talent in the halter and performance arenas for open, amateur and youth exhibitors. Other top performers include O Whata Cyte, Out Til Ar abian Horse Times | 308 | Volume 51, No. 4

She began her major show career in 2011 with then owner Melanie Ronen in Half-Arabian park and English pleasure. Michelle Pease-Paulsen then took ownership and continued her winning ways, adding driving and show hack to her accolades. The Glaser Family followed, enjoying her talents before Sarah Jayne was blessed to have her in her life. In just 8 years, Halsteads Deven earned her riders over 60 Champion/Reserve titles at Scottsdale, Regionals and Youth, Canadian and U.S. Nationals, not to mention an additional 31 Top Ten national titles. Sarah Jayne shares, “I was thankful to own Dev for a period of time and be part of her success. She made my dreams come true in so many ways, from being undefeated in park as a youth and amateur, to helping me master new disciplines. She had the best heart of any horse I know in the arena and was a snuggler in the stalls. I am blessed my mom and Jim Lowe were able to make this all happen. We sold her to Nancy O’Reilly, another loving owner, who allowed me to continue loving and showing her. She will be missed.”

Praise “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise and rejoice, and sing praise. Psalm 98:4

Thank you for the incredible outpouring of love you showed this amazing horse in his return to the arena at 17 years old. It was a night I will never forget on the horse of a lifetime. ~ Chris
