COMMENTS from the publisher THE MOST IMPORTANT CHALLENGE It’s a challenge that is always there. Every year. It never goes away, and it is never not important. It is, truth be told, the greatest challenge in the breed: it is breeding horses, where everything begins. Without breeders, we would have no horses, no equine partners in the present and nothing to take us into the future. That’s because except in rare cases, all the beauty, ability, and temperament that so distinguish the Arabian horse doesn’t happen by accident. In every generation, wise breeders have tried to produce foals to carry on our legacy of excellence, and fortunately, over the years, many have succeeded. Breeding isn’t easy and it isn’t for everyone. It demands knowledge of the Arabian breed and, importantly, horsemanship. It’s not enough just to know pedigrees; you have to know how bloodlines translate into physical beings, and what makes the resulting horses good at what they do. (And that’s even before you count in the cost both financially and emotionally.) Growing up on a breeding farm, where every spring I could watch the babies come into this world, run in the pastures, and mature into adults, I have taken great joy in watching them blossom. When I got old enough to participate in our breeding decisions, it was great fun to see which pedigrees crossed best, which foals would enter the show ring and which would become beloved trail companions. The challenge, of course, that kept drawing me back— beyond just loving the horses themselves—was that the Arabian breed would always need good horses. Always. That, I knew, was important. This is the time of year that colts and fillies are being born, and when breeders are studying bloodlines in search of the best sires for their mares. Anyone with the funding can buy a superstar; not everyone can breed one. The patience alone, from the examination of pedigrees to the evaluation of horses, from the breeding to the foaling 11 months later, is significant when you have so much on the line. It’s not just money in stud fees and mare care; it’s the hopes and dreams that every mating represents. I think we owe a lot of respect and, frankly, “tender loving care” to our breeders. These days, they are a dwindling number, and they rate that gratitude and recognition more than ever. Without them, we would have no Arabian horses to offer the world. Thank you to all the wonderful breeders out there who take the risk and look hopefully into the future.

during his lifetime,” recalls David. “Not only did he have

show ring presence that was unparalleled, but he also became a very popular sire and his offspring, including Garavani, are representing him well.”

Sam Peacemaker had that in mind when he decided to breed

of the individuals combined with the known pre-potency of the pedigrees, I felt I had a good chance of getting a long elegant

IRWIN SCHIMMEL Prestige Farms LLC Hillsboro, OR

Number of years breeding: 40 What were you most proud of in 2020 as a breeder? Our homebred mare, Miz Show Biz. In 2020, two of her foals won three national championships and a reserve. Two other foals have also been national champion and reserve, and there are a few more waiting in the wings that may be the best yet! She is truly a once-in-a-lifetime mare.

How many foals are you expecting in 2021? We’ve bred three mares for 2021 (all proven producers and bred to top stallions out there today): SF Aftershoc x She’s a New Yorker (ASB), KW Micah x Rumorr Has It, and Noble Braveheart x Miz Show Biz (sold in-utero). Our plans are to cut back to four or five mares and do a few more embryo transfers out of those mares.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind as a breeder of the Arabian horse? To have people remember and say, “Irwin bred some nice horses.”

Who or what is your greatest breeding accomplishment and why? Breeding horses that people want to own. We have many repeat owners that come to walk the pastures and see what’s next. And seeing the second and third generation of Schimmels out in the ring riding PF horses ... that is pretty special.

AHT reached out to some of today’s most accomplished and leading breeders to see what’s in store for 2021 and what makes them excited about breeding.

Ar abian Horse Times | 22 | Volume 51, No. 5

LARRY JEROME Jerland Arabians Barron, WI

Number of years breeding: 60 What were you most proud of in 2020 as a breeder? THE NUMBER OF J HORSES that won this past year and numerous top ten winners was exhilarating. It was also exciting to have multiple horses placing in the same class that we had bred.

How many foals are you expecting in 2021? 34 What convinced you to become a breeder? I love genetics and multiple species of livestock. It has always been a passion of mine since I was a kid. Whether it was dogs, cattle or horses, I love studying pedigrees, the selection process, the anticipation of babies being born. Watching your livestock develop and the satisfaction of them going to new homes, and the satisfaction of their new owners, is always exciting for me. It starts with a dream or a vision and ends with the realization that you’ve created something special.

Who are you most excited for in your 2021 foal crop? This is our first foal crop by Kola J, so I’m anxious to see what his babies are going to be. I’m also excited about the first Ansiedad J babies that will arrive as well. Khaja J foals continue to be real showstoppers. I really can’t say that one breeding is more exciting than another, I’m super excited about everything. With each new arrival, it is the anticipation of “will this be the next great one?”

What legacy do you hope to leave behind as a breeder of the Arabian horse? I hope that J horses will continue to make a difference in the halter and performance world. I hope that the genetic contributions we have made to the Arabian breed will be considered significant. “Jerland is all about new beginnings and great endings. Jenerations of Excellence.”

Who or what is your greatest breeding accomplishment and why? Breeding so many continual generations and being recognized by breeders. We have families of horses that definitely have made an impact in the industry, from the “Blue” horses in the Half-Arabian sector, the Khadraj NA/MPA Giovanni genetic cross, to the great stallions and mares that comprise the Jerland look and quality. My friendship with Sheila Varian was another significant factor in my life. We lived by very similar standards and beliefs. You always have to believe in your own program, but it’s nice when you are recognized by other great individuals and breeders. I can’t say that one horse is more exciting than another, but it was the combination of so many great horses that produced the recognition we’ve received from our fellow breeders and competitors alike.

LISA GAUDIO

Kyrie Arabians | West Grove, PA Number of years breeding: 20+ What were you most proud of in 2020 as a breeder? Every one of our beautiful late mare Kyrie Elleison’s foals (triplets), who won seven national championships and one reserve {six unanimously}. She broke records in her afterlife!

How many foals are you expecting in 2021? Sadly, we aren’t. We tried, but it wasn’t meant to be.

What/who convinced you to become a breeder? Suzanne and Perry Perkins.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind as a breeder of the Arabian horse? That we bred for the love of the breed and with the intention of protecting and caring for them.

Who or what is your greatest breeding accomplishment and why? My triplets so far who were truly thought out. I strongly believed in this cross of Vitorio TO and Kyrie Elleison, and having three born in the same year and all earn national championships just proved our decision.

VICKI HUMPHREY

Vicki Humphrey Training Center | Canton, GA Number of years breeding: Majority of our breeding has been done in the last 10 years; 105 foals to date.

What were you most proud of in 2020 as a breeder? Having three family members riding three home-bred horses to four National Championships in 2020 was a thrill. Jessica Clinton on AEPA winner, Drops of Jupiter VH, Lea Dearing on No Strings Attached in the Half-Arabian English Maturity and AOTR, and Andy Dearing on Hey Siri VH in the Half-Arabian English Futurity.

How many foals are you expecting in 2021? We are expecting 12 foals by Baske Afire, Baskghazi. ROL Divine Style, Afire Bey V and Saddlebred stallions Arrowhead’s Unlike Any Other, Callaway’s Northern Kiss and Tango’s Parting Kiss.

What convinced you to become a breeder? A supply and demand issue nudged me into the breeding business. We had a style of horse we wanted to show and couldn’t find it or buy it.

Who are you most excited for in your 2021 foal crop? We had a great mare who we lost at a young age, Carrie Bradshaw. Her mother is back in foal to Baske Afire, and No Strings Attached’s mother is back in foal to Afire Bey V. We are excited for both! What legacy do you hope to leave behind as a breeder of the Arabian horse? I hope buyers will say they bought happy, kind, gifted horses from VHTC. Our goals are temperament and athleticism, and a game willingness to go forward combined with a build that allows them to perform with ease.

MORGAN PELZMAN-RUNYON Holly Hill Farms Ocala, FL

Number of years breeding: 2 What were you most proud of in 2020 as a breeder? That all six babies I bred, each with very different bloodlines on their dam side, turned out to be successful breedings. Starting out, you have an idea what you’ll get and hope that the wanted attributes come to fruition. However, as we all know, experimenting with bloodlines is always a gamble.

How many foals are you expecting in 2021? Fire And Goldd is expecting three foals: a repeat breeding to the great Cordoba BF which has already produced multi-National Champion, Barcelona BF; and foals out of a wonderful Vegaz daughter and beautiful Triften+/ daughter, both of which I’m excited to see.

What convinced you to become a breeder? I’ve always loved the babies! Ever since I was a young girl, I just wanted to make beautiful babies and see them showing. After Digger (Goldd Standard) came to us, I knew I had to make more incredible babies like him and share them with the world!

Who are you most excited for in your 2021 foal crop? I’m excited for all of them, how could I not be?! Both Vegaz and Triften daughters should have beautiful babies that will no doubt perform!

What legacy do you hope to leave behind as a breeder of the Arabian horse? Truly wonderful, well-rounded, beautiful and versatile horses. Horses that not only perform and show well, but who are an immense joy to be around; ones that will continue on to produce more great horses that will carry on for years to come.

Who or what is your greatest breeding accomplishment and why? I’m not sure I have one of those yet, however, my happiest accomplishment from this past year was breeding two H/A colts, both of whom truly encompassed all my goals for breeding, and who were sold to excellent show homes with top notch owners and trainers. I couldn’t have ever dreamed of a better start.

Ar abian Horse Times | 26 | Volume 51, No. 5

DAVE (GAIL) LINIGER AND TIM (MARTY) SHEA

Maroon Fire Arabians & Shea Stables St. Clair, MI Number of years breeding: Since 1980 What were you most proud of in 2020 as a breeder? Inception, bred by Maroon Fire, earned his fourth consecutive UNANIMOUS National Championship win: 2017 Arabian English Performance Association (AEPA) Arabian Futurity, 2018 Junior English Pleasure, and Park Horse (2019 & 2020). In all of these championships, he never received a 2nd place vote. Additionally, we are very proud of two sons by the Shea-bred Afires Heir: The Heiristocratt, who was National Champion in the AEPA Half-Arabian Futurity (bred by Sheas), and Inheritor, who went Reserve in the AEPA Arabian Futurity (bred by Maroon Fire). Both trained and shown by Joel Kiesner.

How many foals are you expecting in 2021? 21 What convinced you to become a breeder? When you decide to become a breeder, it’s something you just like to do, and you have to be an optimist. Every breeding season is a brand new start. You never know when a great foal is going to be born and that anticipation keeps a breeder going. When a stunning foal comes along, it makes it all worth it.

Who are you most excited for in your 2021 foal crop? As Inception’s breeding career gets rolling, we are very excited about all of his foals coming in ‘21, both purebred and Half-Arabian. It is now becoming apparent that he will be a historically significant breeding horse. We are also looking forward to our Australian import, Rhythmic AHSA’s first two foals out of Afire Bey V daughters, and two embryos from the great Dutch Harness Horse Ritida, by Inception.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind as a breeder of the Arabian horse? Be true to yourself regardless of what’s going on around you and breed the kind of horse you like to look at and be around … a beautiful Arabian with a great personality, attitude and marketability; an Arabian who other people admire and who can compete on any level.

Who or what is your greatest breeding accomplishment? In 2019, the united breeding program of Shea Stables and Maroon Fire Arabians earned #1 Overall Leading Breeder (Marty Shea), #1 Arabian Leading Breeder (Maroon Fire) and #1 HalfArabian Leading Breeder (Marty Shea). In 2020, their combined breeding program bred 22 National Champions, Reserve Champions and National Winners, earning the titles of AHT Leading Breeder of National Champions and Overall Leading Specialty Breeder. Through this partnership, we’ve accomplished MANY industry firsts. For the Linigers, Inception is their greatest breeding accomplishment.

AMANDA STANDISH Boisvert Farms, LLC Baton Rouge, LA

Number of years breeding: 18 What were you most proud of in 2020 as a breeder? The Boisvert-bred horses that have excelled with their new amateur riders. They had so much success at both the Mid Summer and U.S. Nationals. We credit this to their willing attitude and trainability, passed down in their breeding.

How many foals are you expecting in 2021? 7 What convinced you to become a breeder? I’ve always wanted to improve when competing. To be better, I needed better horses to ride and show. As a family, we decided to breed them. It’s funny now, because I have fallen in love with breeding and raising my own horses. I still get excited for every mare we breed that is about to foal.

Who are you most excited for in your 2021 foal crop? In my personal foal crop, I am very excited to see the foal out of our maiden Saddlebred mare, by Barcelona BF. She is the daughter of one of my favorite Saddlebred mares who has produced many special foals for us. I am excited to see them all, by Barcelona BF, Rizing Sun and Nobilistic BF.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind as a breeder of the Arabian horse? I want to be able to leave the Arabian horse better than I found it. I always hope to breed better conformed, type, athletic and good-minded Arabian horses with each generation.

Who or what is your greatest breeding accomplishment and why? Breeding the mare, Cordoba BF, who has gone on to produce Barcelona BF and several other special younger foals for us. We bought her mother, Koviak, when she was in her late 20s, so we were only able to get Cordoba out of her.

DAVID BANDY

Wiloma Plantation Fincastle, VA Number of years breeding: Since I was 18 years old

What were you most proud of in 2020 as a breeder? A Half-Arabian mare I bred named WP Corporate Nut Mix. As a 4-year-old, she won one of the largest classes at Youth with Jade Johnson in H/A Country Pleasure JOTR 14-18. Not only was she WP Corporate Image’s first H/A foal, she won out of a class of 44 in only her third show!

How many foals are you expecting in 2021? We are expecting nine foals by WP Corporate Image, five purebred and four Half-Arabian. We will have three Saddlebred and four Hackney pony foals coming!

What convinced you to become a breeder? I could not afford a top-level show horse, so I decided to strive to breed one on my own.

Who are you most excited for in your 2021 foal crop? Our first purebred foal will be out of Audrey Marie Van Oran (a daughter of our *Oran Van Crabbet grandson and out of a rare Mash daughter) and sired by our stallion WP Corporate Image. We are also excited about a H/A foal coming by WP Corporate Image and out of WC Walterway’s Enchanted Evening.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind as a breeder of the Arabian horse? As English pleasure breeders, we strive to breed beautiful athletes that look like Arabians with strong rear ends and upright frames. We also breed for the future, keeping our bloodlines open for crucial outcross opportunities that are needed in the English pleasure ring.

Who or what is your greatest breeding accomplishment and why? WP Corporate Image’s first foal crop consisted of two foals: WP Fashionista and WP Corporate America. Fashionista holds four national titles and Corporate America has two. How often can a breeder say that their stallion’s first foal crop were all multi-national champions, particularly so early on.

are just compelled to do it. It’s in our DNA.

What convinced you to become a breeder? I can’t pinpoint the exact moment I became interested in breeding. As a child, I was extremely interested in the makeup of great horses. I studied pedigrees and videos to try and understand which genetics resulted in the best crosses. Breeding is something I’ve always cared very deeply about.

Who are you most excited for in your 2021 foal crop? We are expecting some really unique and special crosses this Spring that have been in the works for years. Who are you most excited for in your 2021 foal crop? All of them! We have bred several young mares (including a Coltrane daughter) and we have teamed up with Strawberry Banks Farm on several of their great mares to breed to Coltrane. to do. He assessed his accomplishments in a long and highly decorated training career, and gave serious thought to how he would like to spend the rest of his life. Ocala offers other benefits as well, he notes, including a burgeoning business community and the addition of the new World Equestrian Center (WEC). One of the most highly anticipated developments in the industry in years, the WEC is expected to host about every type of equine activity there is, as well as introduce a diverse new crowd to horses through other events. And so, John P. Rannenberg Show Horses LLC is coming together (the “P” is a callout to his mother, whose maiden name was Penn). His clients have followed, filling his stalls and settling in comfortably, and he and Christy are moving forward slowly, further developing a bond already decades old. “I’ve known her since she was 12,” he smiles. “I watched her develop her craft and saw how she handled her clients and her success—she’s someone I’ve respected for years.” Most importantly, their foundation is that their philosophies, their methods of training, and their concepts of integrity match. “I think we can complement each other,” he reflects. “The choices I’ve made have felt very natural. It’s been an easy transition.”

2020 AHAF Holiday Show & Spotlight Futurity November 27-29, 2020 | Tampa, Florida by Ally Edwards

E

xhibitors put their boots on in the Sunshine State this past Thanksgiving weekend to compete at the AHAF Holiday Festival Horse Show at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center. Celebrating their 51st year, the Arabian Horse Association of Florida (AHAF) Holiday Festival was also home this year to the Region 12 Spotlight Futurity. The show serves as a Region 12 and Region 14 qualifying show for a large range of classes including main ring, sport horse, dressage and Academy disciplines. In addition to an expansive class list with payouts totaling over $150,000, the show and sponsors awarded thousands of dollars in prize money to its exhibitors in a variety of select classes, including $2,000 in dressage championships, $400 to western dressage Hi-Score winners, $1,000 in Florida-Bred Payback bonuses, $5,000 to Weanling Jackpot winners, $2,500 in the 2-Year-Old Gelding Jackpot, $400 to the Sport Horse Supreme Champion, and $1,000 awarded to the Purebred Best In Show. Many thanks to our following sponsors: Sunset Chevrolet, Markel/Lisa Seger Insurance, Suzie Cook, Allison Mehta, Pizzonia Training, Ted Carson, Chestnuthill Arabians and other private donors. Offering open-breed western and traditional dressage offered an opportunity to bring in new people to the Arabian community. These and the FEI-rated classes require “S” level judges, which provided Arabian exhibitors the chance to perform for senior licensed judges Renee Johnson and Natalie Lamping. Johnson

and Lamping in turn, enjoyed judging the Sport Horse Supreme under the spotlights, as this is not something done at a traditional dressage show. And for those just beginning their show career, Academy classes were also offered, allowing new riders to gain the experience needed to compete in classes not normally offered at rated competitions. The Academy Horsemanship Cup, sponsored by Eric Wolfe Arabians, gave Academy exhibitors a chance to win a wonderful trophy. Because the Region 12 Championship show was cancelled earlier in the year, the Spotlight Futurity classes were held at the Holiday Festival, paying out $155,000 in prize money. Adding halter classes for yearling and 2-year-old colts, geldings and fillies, as well as western, hunter and English pleasure for 3-, 4-, and 5-yearold horses, brought more exhibitors to the show. This boost in the number of entries increased the level of competition and quality of horses, and for the first time in five years, all five barns on the property were used. Despite coronavirus restrictions, it did not dampen spirits completely. Saturday evening classes were held outside under big, rolling spotlights, lighting up the arena in such a way that it felt like one was competing on a stage—the exhibitors loved it! For spectators, tables were spaced six feet apart and appetizers and drinks were safely distributed for all to enjoy. The beautiful Florida winter evening added to the magic while watching dazzling horses express their joy under lights.

Ar abian Horse Times | 38 | Volume 51, No. 5

This year threw everyone for a loop with so many shows being canceled, moved around, or added, but the show’s management, led by AHAF President Laurie Salmi and co-manager Suzie Cook did a fantastic job of putting on a successful and large show for all to enjoy. Laurie felt that a new level of excitement and camaraderie was present at the show that had not been felt in a while. “The weather was perfect, the Tampa fairgrounds is a wonderful facility to work with, and Clay Crosby, the Equestrian Center’s manager, is always available to help us with what we need; he and his staff went out of their way to do what needs to be done,” says Laurie. “It was so exciting to see pink ribbons on people’s barns ... it meant the classes were sizable! Everyone enjoyed themselves at this year’s show and, hopefully, next year will be even bigger and more amazing!”

Excellence in horsemanship and sportsmanship was recognized with the following: ~ Youth Sportsmanship - Lily Miller ~ Adult Sportsmanship - Bob Burton ~ Junior Sport Horse/Dressage Excellence Alana Nyborn, recipient of a $100 gift certificate to use toward future show entries. ~ Partnership Award, sponsored by Platinum Performance (given to two horse andrider pairs chosen by the judges): • Mike Wilson & Malik El Jamaal • Lian Otieza & SF Top Shelf ~ StressLess Award (given to those who demonstrate above and beyond care for their horses and chosen by show management): • Professional – Rob Bick • Amateur – Linda Ziegler

2020 AEPA BREEDERS OF THE YEAR

by CHRISTY EGAN

Maroon Fire Arabians broodmare Sweet Summer Fire (by Afire Bey V).

It was a particularly exciting and satisfying 2020 U.S. National Championship Show for the perennially successful team of Maroon Fire Arabians and Shea Stables. Even though it was a stressful and difficult year for the horse community and the entire world, the end of October brought some welcome joy and cheers for Arabian horse competitors in both the AEPA $100,000 Arabian and the $50,000 Half-Arabian Saddle Seat Futurities; classes filled with nose-to-tail talent and quality. In 2020 the winner of the Half-Arabian AEPA was The Heiristocratt (Afires Heir x Ritida, by Majesteit). This is auspicious for a multitude of reasons. The Heiristocratt, owned by I Ask LLC, was bred by Marty Shea (a 2020 Leading AEPA Breeder), ridden by Joel Kiesner (2020 Leading AEPA Trainer), sired

by Afires Heir (2020 Leading AEPA Sire), and out of Ritida (top Shea broodmare and the dam of seven National winning offspring during 2020). This must be some sort of a record for a broodmare. Ritida now has 12 National winning Half-Arabian offspring to her name. The purebred AEPA Futurity was won by Vicki Humphrey’s Drops Of Jupiter VH, by Afire Bey V grandson, SF Aftershoc, and out of an IXL Noble Express+ daughter. Reserve in the class, Inheiritor (Afires Heir x Sweet Summer Fire), was bred by Maroon Fire and ridden by Joel Kiesner for Candace Avery. Sweet Summer Fire had four national winners in 2020, two were previous multi-National Champions, Noble Soldier and Saxton DGL. The others were relatively new. Inheiritor, making his second trip to Tulsa, was 2019 U.S. National Champion English Pleasure Futurity. Imperator DGL

Ar abian Horse Times | 2 | A.E.P.A. Futurity

(Afires Heir) took his first top ten this year in the English Pleasure Jr. Horse for owners John Code and Greg Lymer. The stats for the Maroon Fire stallions, Afire Bey V and IXL Noble Express+, remain remarkably strong. Between these two, their sons and daughters won 28 national or reserve national championships and 153 top ten awards at the 2020 Youth, Mid Summer and U.S. Nationals. Twothirds of those were Afire Bey V get, though he passed away in 2015. IXL Noble Express+ offspring dominated the U.S. National Park with five of his offspring taking champion, reserve and three additional top ten awards. Junior breeding sire Inception (IXL Noble Express+ x Bonita Afire) won his fourth consecutive, unanimous U.S. National Championship (his second in the Park) with trainer Joel Kiesner. Inception’s full sister, Noble Blessing, was 2020 U.S. National Champion English Pleasure AAOTR 50+. Their dam, Bonita Afire, now has four national winners. Inception’s oldest offspring turn three in 2021 and are now trotting their first straightaways under saddle. Next summer … the show ring! Tim Shea can’t wait. “I’m incredibly excited about the Inception Half-Arabian youngsters we are riding and about to ride,” he laughs. “We couldn’t have guessed how well Inception would cross with Saddlebred mares. Necks, hips, style, elegance. I’ve never seen an Arabian sire hold onto the best Saddlebred attributes of the mares, while adding the best Arabian qualities. His purebreds are exceptional neck, front and hock!” It can’t be a surprise that Maroon Fire Arabians and Shea Stables have now imported an outstanding Crabbet-bred Arabian stallion as a potential English outcross here. As the breeders of the Leading All-Time Arabian Sire and the creators of the current dominant Arabian English bloodline, the Linigers and Sheas feel compelled to bring in a new cross. Their candidate is Rhythmic AHSA, a big, solidly built Afire Bey V look-alike from Australia. If the past 20 plus years are a precursor, the future is bright indeed!

Top to bottom: 2020 Unanimous U.S. National Champion Park Horse, Inception; Tim and Marty Shea with multi-National Champion producer Ritida (DHH); and 2020 Unanimous U.S. National Champion AEPA Half-Arabian, The Heiristocratt. Left: Gail & Dave Liniger.

SF AFTERSHOC+ 2020 AEPA Leading Sire By COLLEEN SCOTT

After the winners were named,

points awarded and dollars counted, it didn’t shock anyone that SF

Aftershoc (SF Specs Shocwave x SF Sweet Elegance)

was named the AEPA Leading Sire in all categories: number of

winners, points and payouts. The highly decorated stallion has sired

AEPA winners every year since 2014, with prize money earned by his

get totaling near $100,000.

SF Aftershoc sired the Arabian Horse Times $100,000 Arabian

Saddle Seat Futurity Champion, Drops of Jupiter VH (x ERA

Madusa). Jessica Clinton had a thrilling ride on the mare to win the

title for owner Vicki Humphrey. SF Aftershoc also sired two others in

the top ten, BL Shoc Affair (x BL Torrid Affair) and Aftershocs Anzapollo (x Anzapolla Bey). In the Equine Athletic Veterinary Services sponsored

$50,000 Half-Arabian Futurity, two of the top ten winners were sired by

SF Aftershoc, SD Nuttin Honey (x Lismore’s Nuttin Better) and Eye Candy

VH (x Bothered and Bewildered). At the 2020 Scottsdale Show, another of SF

Aftershoc’s offspring, HS Shes a Shocker, (x Hush Hush) claimed a top ten in the

AEPA Conway Arabians $20,000 Country English Pleasure AOTR Maturity. All of these winning rides combined to make SF Aftershoc

the leading sire in all of the AEPA categories for 2020.

Bred by Alicia Guzman Pace, the now 15-year-old stunning chestnut was recently acquired by Hagale Family Arabians LLC from long-time owners, the Flynn

family, following the passing of renowned horsewoman L.A. Flynn. SF Aftershoc is now standing at Chrishan Park where they are thrilled to be managing the

superstar’s career.

“Aftershoc is just an amazing sire,” says Shan Wilson.

“His get did particularly well at the 2020 U.S. Nationals in all of the English

classes, but especially well in the AEPA and futurity classes.”

The stallion himself won the AEPA Futurity class in 2009

with Peter Stachowski aboard. The following year, he and Peter

returned to the ring at U.S. Nationals, capturing the Reserve

National Champion title in the U.S. National Arabian English

Pleasure Junior Horse class. His last show ring appearance was in

2013, but Shan doesn’t rule out the possibility of him returning to the ring.

“He comes out everyday with his ears up, moving forward with a lot of enthusiasm,” says Shan. “We are really excited to have him at the farm.”

New owners Jim and Mary Martha Hagale are equally thrilled. “When we were watching at U.S.

Nationals this year, I remember telling Chris and Shan that we needed to breed to Aftershoc,” Jim recalls. “They just kept calling his name out as the sire of one after another of the class winners.”

DROPS OF JUPITER VH x ERA Madusa 2020 U.S National AEPA Arabian Horse Times $100,000 Arabian Saddle Seat Futurity Champion Bred & Owned by Vicki Humphrey

Little did Jim know at the time there would be an opportunity to purchase the stallion. “We are very grateful to the Flynn family for everything they’ve done to promote this horse. Vicki Humphrey was also instrumental in managing this stallion’s career. We are honored to continue building his legacy.”

With a steady rise in the AEPA Leading Sire Overall list (SF Aftershoc now ranks 5th based on the

2020 U.S. NATIONAL TOP TENS WINNERS IN AEPA CLASSES:

2020 statistics), the future continues to look bright. Next year’s class of contenders is really promising as

BL SHOC AFFAIR x BL Torrid Affair

highest level in the 3-year-old classes, with a combined five tri-colored ribbons in the English Pleasure

AFTERSHOCS ANZAPOLLO x Anzapolla Bey

SF Aftershoc get not only did well in the AEPA classes at U.S. Nationals, but they also performed at the and Half-Arabian English Pleasure Futurity classes and Half-Arabian Country English Pleasure Futurity class.

Currently, SF Aftershoc has 195 registered foals on the ground. Chris, Shan and Jim are all looking forward to adding to that roster of already proven progeny.

“There are so many great ones out there,” says Jim. “Not only are they winning the AEPA classes, but they are also winning the other national, Scottsdale and regional championships. We are excited about the future of this great stallion and thrilled to be a part of it.”

AEPA Futurities

THE ARABIAN ENGLISH PERFORMANCE ASSOCIATION with Peter Conway, President U.S. Nationals 2020 was incredible as we all came together and celebrated the Arabian horse. It was a joy to be there, and once again, the AEPA classes were the highlight of a fabulous week. I am always amazed at how the Arabian horse, our common bond, can bring us together. After reaching the milestone of $2 million dollars paid out in prize money, this is a good time to reflect on the AEPA and what it is all about. The benefits of the program and enrolling a stallion are clear. For the cost of donating just one breeding, the stallion owner gets a GREAT DEAL! • • • • • • •

Every foal sired by that stallion is automatically in the program. NO extra nomination fees. NO paperwork to enroll the foals. Progeny can compete in the $100,000/$50,000 classes as 4-year-olds. They can compete at the Buckeye and Scottsdale shows in the $20,000 AEPA classes for the rest of their lives. Every foal is more valuable. Every breeding is more valuable.

BUT THESE ARE NOT THE BEST REASONS TO BE INVOLVED. Do it because you love it! It is your passion! BE PART OF MAKING IT HAPPEN! Enroll your stallion, BUY AN AUCTION BREEDING, be a contributor to this wonderful community; continue helping the Arabian English horse prosper! A special thanks to the Arabian Horse Times and Equine Athlete Veterinary Services for supporting our Nationals classes and to Strawberry Banks Farm and Conway Arabians for their support of the Buckeye and Scottsdale Maturities. Most of all, THANK YOU, to every stallion owner that donates a breeding, and every breeder that buys one in the auction. It is your love of the Arabian English horse that makes this all possible. The AEPA was created to serve breeders and to promote the Arabian English Performance horse. Get involved, breed wonderful horses, enjoy the competition, and have these horses in your life! Ali Brady ABCentre Scottsdale, AZ

Years as a trainer: 30 Services/Discipline: Hunter, Western, Side Saddle Competition | Youth & Amateur | Sales & Marketing What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? It saddens me to see our trainer and exhibitor pool forever shrinking. I miss the days when I did not know half of the people at a show. We have become so specialized and competitive that only the powerhouses can survive, thus making the mid and lower priced horses harder to find homes for. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I showed saddle seat at most of my first shows as a youth. Hunter was not really much of a thing then. You could say I pretty much learned hunter as it evolved. I enjoy a powerful horse with the precision and finesse of a solid hunter. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? I never leave home without my favorite work saddle, Patches! I bought her with a student loan back in 1992. She has been re-stuffed and has had many face lifts. That saddle fits all the horses and is the most comfortable. We have put a lot of miles on our odometer together! What’s something most people don’t know about you? I come from very “humble” beginnings. I was raised by a single mother, she changed jobs and moved us from town to town, state to state several times per year. The one constant in my life has always been the Arabian horse. I am proud of my business and reputation.

Years as a trainer: 15+ Services/Discipline: Western & Classical Dressage, Sport Horse In-Hand/On The Rail

In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? Last year was a challenge; we had to do some creative things. We now offer online courses for Amateurs, video coaching and consulting. We are setting up in-house clinics but with few participants. I will say that having done all this, we have been able to give much more personalized attention to our clients. We have developed a different perspective toward training. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? Our online Amateur Academy. Here, riders will learn rules and regulations. We have videos that help the clients develop their horse and themselves. There are video critiques, coaching and personalized consults. We want to get the Amateur rider ready to show. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? I’d like to see more classes for the beginning rider. More green classes. I would also really like more shows to offer western dressage. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I started in saddle seat, and moved to western pleasure and hunt after that. I fell in love with western dressage which we have been doing for several years now. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Towels. You never have enough! What’s something most people don’t know about you? I’m a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.

Laura Rodel Cedar Ridge Arabians Jordan, MN

Years as a trainer: 4 Services/Discipline: Saddle Seat In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? Things might not always go as planned in the beginning, but in the end, it all works out. What was the most difficult part for you? Trying to not overwork the horses when a lot of our shows were cancelled. What was the most positive? Seeing the excitement from the clients when they were able to come and ride/spend time with their horses. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? We are excited to get the 2-year-olds going and see what they become. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? That we keep supporting our smaller shows and programs. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I started out showing western/hunt. My trainer at the time kept trying to get me to ride an English horse she had, and I finally agreed to take a lesson on her. From that moment on, I’ve been hooked and fell in love with saddle seat. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? A lunge line.

Cory Byrne Cedar Ridge Arabians Jordan, MN

Years as a trainer: 10 Services/Discipline: Halter Trainer/Showman

In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? 2020 has been a big year of self-reflection, for me. The most difficult thing has been realizing how many things about myself were in need of a good overhaul, but the most positive is making those changes and realizing how great the rewards are for doing so. Especially this year, I’ve been learning how to really embrace life, instead of always going with the flow. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? I hope to bring on some new clients to show for and with. I love training amateurs as much as I love training their horses! What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? New people! What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I started in halter and have stuck with that. I didn’t have any horse experience before I started out cleaning stalls at Ted Carson’s 12 years ago, and I feel like I’m still mastering my craft in that discipline. That, and I really just love it! What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? A good set of clippers! I really enjoy show clipping and bringing out the horse’s finest features by doing so. What’s something most people don’t know about you? I grew up on a stage, participating in musicals and theater, from the time I was 6 years old, all the way up until I got into the horse industry. Trainers

Joe Alberti Chestnuthill Arabians Ocala, FL

Years as a trainer: 24 Services/Discipline: Stallions at Stud | Halter, Hunter, English | Youth & Amateurs, with individual care

In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? I have definitely learned that my horses are trained, and I can rely on that. The most difficult part was not being able to see friends and family. As to the positive, we had a FANTASTIC year at the shows we did attend. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? More of a focus on amateurs and youth. I did so much of this in PA, and want to get back to that. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? Positivity and less bad talking. There can be a lot of negativity and negative talk which does nothing but hurt us all as a whole. The professional community needs to be more cohesive. We need to do a better job at keeping clients in this industry and not driving them away. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I started riding horses as most people do, when I got my first Arabian. He was a coming 2-year-old, too young to ride, so halter was originally something I was doing to just have something to do until he was broke, but I totally fell in love with it. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Draw reigns. What’s something most people don’t know about you? In high school and college I did a decent bit of modeling while running a telemarketing call center; all to pay for the horses. Ar abian Horse Times | 112 | Volume 51, No. 5

Years as a trainer: 37 Services/Discipline: Breeding | Marketing | Training (primarily Saddle Seat)

In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? I learned how to use Zoom … you can’t keep the horse industry down! And the most difficult … wearing a mask. My positive was showing Vegaz and receiving a standing ovation in one of the most exciting and talked about classes that has happened at the U.S. Nationals for some time, and at a show with the most energy I have seen since it moved to Tulsa. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? Adding SF Aftershoc to the stallion list. He and Vegaz both are leading sires in the industry. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? Trainer collaboration or think tank meetings to discuss ways to improve the industry and increase participation. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I started out in saddle seat but did everything; I just had more success in saddle seat, so those are the horses that filled the stalls. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Bits … all of them. What’s something most people don’t know about you? My early success came in native costume. Years as a trainer: 32 Services/Discipline: Amateur and Youth riders in a variety of disciplines In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? This has been a difficult year because of Covid, but my day-to-day life didn’t change a great deal except for the month that I had to close the barn. The hardest part was not having horse shows to attend and to judge. The positive part was having more time with my family. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? I have moved from Miami to Ocala and have a beautiful new farm to enjoy with my clients and family. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? More grassroots in our industry. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? Growing up, I competed in a wide variety of disciplines because my Arabian did everything from English to western and everything in between. I know I’m dating myself, but all of our disciplines have now become so specialized that most focus on their individual forte. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Wine opener. What’s something most people don’t know about you? I still compete in the same side saddle skirt and saddle that I used when I was 12. Ar abian Horse Times | 116 | Volume 51, No. 5

What was the most difficult part for you? We all learned how incredible our Arabian horse community is. The most difficult part was trying to plan our show year which is hard when things were changing constantly. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? We hope to grow in all areas. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? Prize money programs to entice people to get involved in our breed. What division did you start out competing in? My first real show experience was in western/English. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Latex. What’s something most people don’t know about you? Trainers

Bridget Fitzpatrick Fitzpatrick Performance Horses, LLC Minden, NV

Years as a trainer: 22 Services/Discipline: Western, English, Hunter, Driving, Costume, Side Saddle, Halter In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? I have definitely learned that I personally need to not be so caught up in a fast-paced crazy lifestyle, to slow down and breathe, and appreciate the day-to-day which we often take for granted. 2020 has been a reminder of how privileged I am to do what I love and make a living from it. I am so very grateful for the Arabian horse community. We truly are more than members … we are family. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? The strangest result of the pandemic is that our beginner lesson program is booming! So much new blood, and many newcomers who have fallen in love with Arabian horses! Many will be leasing, showing, and buying their first Arabian in 2021. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? Bringing new blood into the breed. Every single farm NEEDS to have a beginner lesson program and outreach plan. We have such a phenomenal product, the Arabian horse, and it is our job to bring new people in and give them a positive experience. It’s essential for the success of the industry. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I started in western pleasure but was cleaning stalls at a farm with a lot of English presence, so I was enamored and immediately appreciated everything there was to offer with Arabians. At my first Scottsdale show, I competed with the same horse in western pleasure, stock seat equitation, side saddle and costume. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Pretty much everything I own! I’m a heavy packer, and fully believe if I leave it behind, I will for sure need it, so I just pack it all! What’s something most people don’t know about you? I have a degree in Public Relations. I am OCD about things being clean and perfect. I tell my daughter that the dogs and my mini horse (Hobbs) are her brothers, and I have a very good sense of humor which occasionally gets me in trouble. I’m working on a children’s book series about Hobbs. Ar abian Horse Times | 120 | Volume 51, No. 5

Larry & Jody Hoffman Diane Underwood Glenmoor Farms | Longmont, CO

Years as a trainer: Larry: 45+/Jody: 35+/Diane: 40+ Services/Discipline: Open & Amateur Training | English, Western, Hunter, Working Western & Equitation In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? Patience and adaptability … we never knew what could happen next and had to go with the flow. It did give us a lot of uninterrupted time to just train horses and get back to basics. With the waiving of qualifications, we were able to go to a new Regional show that we otherwise may not have gone to. It was challenging, however, not being able to get new horses and riders consistent show ring experience. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? 2020 was a big year for Glenmoor. We look forward to watching the program continue to evolve and advance in training, showing and breeding. We also want to continue growing the Glenmoor Riding Club in 2021. Our goal is to welcome new riders in of all ages through a successful lesson program. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? We all need to focus on how we welcome new people into our breed. Every local club and farm should strive to host at least one event focused on inviting in new people. Also, it is important we increase the education of our judges. With virtual tools, education should not be limited to every three years. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? Diane: I started doing a little of everything. I worked with whatever horse I had and because of that, I never focused in on a specific discipline. Larry: I started with western and trail Quarter Horses, but my first job was at an Arabian farm. I love the versatility of our horse and have always wanted to train all disciplines. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Diane: My favorite bits and reins. Larry: I tend to overpack, especially with bits because I never know when I will want that one specific bit. I also never leave without a bottle of omeprazole (for me). What’s something most people don’t know about you? Diane: I used to sew my own saddle suits and I am an avid reader. Larry: Most people know we have bulldogs, but as a kid, I was very active in theatre and music. Ar abian Horse Times | 122 | Volume 51, No. 5

Years as a trainer: 20 Services/Discipline: Hunter, English, Western | Youth and Amateur In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? The last year has been amazing. It has taught me to think outside the box when it comes to sales of horses. The most difficult part is not seeing some of my students. We are a very tight knit family and Covid has caused time apart. I love the relationship that has grown because of the distance and tough times. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? We have integrated a new breeding program, as well as taken on some new clients. I always love bringing new people into the Arabian industry and exposing them to the amazing breed. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? I would love to see more new faces entering in all levels. I believe we need to support small breeding operations so we continue to grow our registration numbers. Also, mentoring our new youth because they are the future of this business. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? English was the first division I started in at 10 years old. Luckily, I had the opportunity to ride five-gaited Saddlebreds and reiners throughout my youth. I always believed that if I rode all disciplines, it would improve my training tactics, however, my heart is with English. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? I’ve always been really picky about what I put in a horse’s mouth, so I would say I never leave home without my favorite Faulkner’s snaffle bit. It’s always been a go-to and all my horses love it! What’s something most people don’t know about you? My other passion is the outdoors. I enjoy hiking up a mountain, smelling the clean air and taking photographs of wild animals. When you get out away from society, cell phones and the internet, you can clear your mind and think about life in a different way. Ar abian Horse Times | 124 | Volume 51, No. 5

Years as a trainer: 17 Services/Discipline: Arabian and Half-Arabian Halter In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? I think something we’ve all learned in the last year was to be more thoughtful and caring of others around us. 2020 was probably a water divider year for all, and in my program, to see the support from my clients really showed in what direction to stir and showed me who was willing to strive for our dream! What new things will 2021 bring for your program? GRK’s new Scottsdale location is definitely something new and exciting for 2021, and the stallion lineup from our clients we are working to put together to stand at stud for this coming season. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? I have seen this last year more camaraderie among professionals and the support of one another not seen before made me happy. We needed that. I think transparency is definitely something to continue to aim for and bringing in new people excited for our Arabian horse lifestyle! What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? Back in Brazil as a kid, I rode a lot on different horse breeds and did some jumping at an equestrian center, but as soon as I got involved with my dad’s Arabian horse farm, I got into halter right away. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Show halter. What’s something most people don’t know about you? My name isn’t Lucho (lol!); it’s a nickname that my grandfather used to call me by!

Innvovation Arabians LLC | Port Orange, FL Years as a trainer: First National Champion in 1981 (Serinask++, Informal Combination)

Services/Discipline: Training and Riding Lesson Programs for all Disciplines In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? 2020 brought some changes for me. After 30+ years in Scottsdale, I moved to Dayton Beach, FL in June to Innvovation Arabians LLC. This has been a rewarding experience. The love, compassion and willingness to learn from the Lapham family is refreshing. Most difficult for me is the struggles with COVID and not being close to my son, daughter-in-law, and grandson in AZ. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? Innvovation Arabians LLC is 280 acres with two covered arenas, covered round ring, two large outdoor arenas, dressage arena, 14 pastures with grass (all at least two acres each), and amazing riding trails. We welcome riders of all ages to the ranch. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? With the times that we are facing, we need to have a positive attitude and support each other in this business. We do what we do because of our love for the Arabian horse. We need to remember people have choices and our youth are the backbone of this industry, along with amateurs. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? At a young age, my parents owned a ranch in Tucson, AZ. We had Quarter Horses, Trotting Ponies, roping arena, jumpers … a little of everything. I rode it all. As the years went on, I rode Arabians with my dad, Gordon Shea, in all disciplines. My personal favorite is show hack, poetry in motion between horse and rider. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? If anyone knows me, my bit boxes. I have a large collection. What’s something most people don’t know about you? I race cars and desert race trucks. In MN after high school, I raced snowmobiles two winters. Loved it! Ar abian Horse Times | 128 | Volume 51, No. 5

The most difficult part was not being able to visit family, but the most positive was still having a job, which I’m very thankful for. @HARTMAN PHOTO

What new things will 2021 bring for your program? We hope to continue advancing and progressing in such a way that it is recognized within the industry. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? New halter trainers and new winners. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I started as an amateur and progressed by training constantly to go professional. I plan on progressing and growing as a professional. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? A show halter. What’s something most people don’t know about you? That is a tough question, as I am an open book.

Trainers

Katherine Rich-Elzig KRE Show Horses | Temecula, CA

Years as a trainer: 18 Services/Discipline: English, Sport Horse, Equitation and Dressage In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? As I reflect on 2020, I immediately ruminate on the character traits that came out in people. Through all the turmoil, inherent good is what has surfaced. I have never had a better show season, surrounded by such talented, passionate people focused on what really matters to them. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? We will continue to grow in our skill set, train excellent young horses and compete on two circuits. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? We (professionals) need to focus more on community outreach for an influx of new faces in our industry. By developing programs that help bridge the gap between the general public and their access to horses is the only way to keep our way of life sustainable. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I started with saddle seat. I trained my 4-year-old Barbary daughter with the help of Judy Kibler at the age of 8! From there, I did hunter pleasure, jumper, equitation in all seats, and eventually, show hack, which led to my obsession with dressage. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Oh boy, that’s a loaded question. By tack trunk you mean ocean container! I have two trailers of “stuff” I can’t leave home without. To narrow it down would be almost impossible; my husband can vouch for that. What’s something most people don’t know about you? Most people “outside of my circle” don’t know that I want to be in the Olympics in dressage. There are so many variables that are tied to that dream of mine, but I will tell you there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think or work towards that goal. In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? This last year has been difficult for us all as a whole. Living on the farm made it much easier for me personally to deal with all that we went through with COVID, especially never knowing what would change next. Having moved to a new farm needing a lot of improvements, it gave us time to work on projects that would have had to wait otherwise What new things will 2021 bring for your program? Our triplets did incredibly well at Nationals in 2020, and they will be starting their performance careers. It will be fun to watch them grow and blossom. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? I would like to see our Arabians be promoted more as a family horse. We have such an emphasis on national titles that we forget how much these horses do for us outside of the show world. We were blessed with an inconceivable number of national wins this year, but it is what these great creatures do for us outside of the show arena that touches our souls. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I started out showing mostly in western—Quarter Horses, in fact. My first top ten was in the hunter discipline, and as time went on, I worked with Saddlebreds and National Show horses where I concentrated mostly on saddle seat and driving. I’m now very focused on working with athletic halter horses and seeing them compete in the performance arena that best suits them. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? I never leave home without my farrier tools and medical supplies. You never know when you have to put a shoe back on or fix a cut leg. What’s something most people don’t know about you? My favorite part of being with horses is breeding. I enjoy deciding who to cross to whom; what is the predicted outcome, and how it works out. I love to talk to successful breeders and hear their stories. We can only breed a better horse. We can only do so much with training. We owe it to the Arabian breed to try and create on the most correct, willing horse that we can, without losing Arabian type. Ar abian Horse Times | 134 | Volume 51, No. 5

Years as a trainer: 20+ Services/Discipline: Specializing in Western Dressage and Working Western In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? This past year has reminded me to remain flexible and that success isn’t always measured at the horse show. 2020 actually became an opportunity for our riders to develop new skills and branch out into new disciplines, from ranch riding to traditional dressage and even hunters. While planning for shows has been a huge challenge, the opportunity to diversify our riders’ skills has been rewarding! What new things will 2021 bring for your program? With the coming show season still being a bit unpredictable, I look forward to the challenge of coming up with new ways to improve our horsemanship in and out of the show pen. I am excited to introduce our own in-house achievement program to showcase our riders’ widely diverse talents. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? I think 2020 has proven how important it is for horsemen to collaborate and support each other, working together in new and creative ways. I feel this is something the Arabian industry does very well, and I hope to see the trend continue. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? My first interest was hunter pleasure, but I had the good fortune to work for a top NRHA trainer for several years where I developed a passion for working western horses. I enjoyed reining and cow horse immensely but have truly fallen in love with the finesse of western dressage and ranch riding. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? The older I get, the more I love my Tom Balding smooth snaffle. I enjoy transitioning my traditional bridle horses in and out of the snaffle as we work through new western dressage movements. What’s something most people don’t know about you? One day I would love to learn side saddle! It’s on my bucket list.

Years as a trainer: 25 Services/Discipline: Training and showing in all pleasure disciplines In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? 2020 was a difficult year. Never take for granted what we have. I love horse shows, so the lack of shows made this year long. On a positive note, we had more time at home and more time for training. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? Starting a lesson program to bring new people into the industry. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? Ways for the average middle-class family to be able to afford to do this. The unfortunate part of this industry is the cost which limits what many people can do. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I showed as a youth in western pleasure, but always did my own thing and never had horses with a trainer. Then I worked at a Saddlebred barn and rode all English horses. When I started on my own, I got a couple of nice hunters in training and that is what the majority of my barn is now. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Slow twist snaffle.

Mike Grimm Training | Raymore, MO

Years as a trainer: 15 Services/Discipline: Full-service training and showing in English and Specialty divisions In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? I was reminded of the value of surrounding one’s self with good people. From personal loss to health concerns to Covid restrictions, 2020 was a doozy. For me personally, I can’t say enough for the patience and trust of my clients. I’ve worked hard to improve the quality of the horses I train and show, but was reminded how important it is to have quality people to work for and with. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? Fingers crossed, we’ll have a complete show season. That will be new! What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? Our industry needs more comradery and sharing. I admit I’m skeptical of 2022 participation qualifications, but I’m hoping exhibitors will be able to have more time for socializing and networking. We pack our show schedules with so many classes, we don’t have time to enjoy being where we are. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? When I was young, I didn’t have the luxury of competing in just one division—I did it all and with one horse! Halter, showmanship, English, then western, and sometimes timed events after (all in one day). I’ve always been drawn to more forward gaits, so currently specialize in the English divisions. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? My long lines—definitely my favorite form of exercise. What’s something most people don’t know about you? After high school, my going to college was a big priority for my parents. I tried for two years and realized it was the wrong time/ wrong place for me. In my mid-30s I returned and finished my bachelor’s degree at the University of Massachusetts with a degree in Political Science and Legal Studies. Ar abian Horse Times | 140 | Volume 51, No. 5

Years as a trainer: 7 Services/Discipline: Saddle Seat and Hunt Seat (main focus) In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? 2020 didn’t necessarily teach us this, but truly shined a light on the fact that these horses bring so much joy to our lives. Even though we weren’t able to show as much, having these horses in our lives helped us all keep our sanity! What new things will 2021 bring for your program? Although it’s always a goal of ours, we would like to continue to try to grow our lesson program and introduce more people to the breed! What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? I loved seeing some of the older stallions in our performance divisions this year! I’d love to see more longevity in our horses’ show careers like we saw at U.S. this year! What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I mainly started saddle seat but always loved riding hunt seat as well. I have mainly stayed with those two disciplines as my focus. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? So many things! But I ride in different saddles for schooling, saddle seat and hunt seat, as they are the most “specific to me” equipment that I use. What’s something most people don’t know about you? I feel like everyone knows everything about me! I’m an open book and live a pretty low-key life outside of work. Years as a trainer: 20 Services/Discipline: Halter In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? Even in crazy times, people still find comfort and love their horse, all while still supporting the Arabian industry … they stick together. It’s also a reminder of how not to take life for granted and how fast things can change. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? New foals being born, a new year filled with hope and dreams, and a new show season that hopefully opens with travel. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? Being more supportive and more family orientated. We need to really take initiative and bring everyone together as a whole. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? Started out with equitation which led to rodeo (of all things), then progressed into halter. What’s something most people don’t know about you? Bronc riding!

Years as a trainer: 33 Services/Discipline: Specialize in Breeding, Training and Showing of English Pleasure horses In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? Last year was difficult due to lack of horse shows early on in the season, but in retrospect, our clients loved going to bigger, more competitive shows. We also saw a big increase in our lesson program as parents looked for Covid-friendly activities for their families. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? The prize money programs we have in place are great, but wish our industry provided more show ring incentives for owners and breeders. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? Shawn: I grew up with Morgans and Saddlebreds and evolved into the Arabian industry. Carmelle: I started out in 4-H with a stock pony and graduated to an Arabian saddle seat horse. We are both drawn to the beauty and athleticism of the English horse. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Other than the obvious tack, we always pack lots of treats and gut medicine (omeprazole, Succeed, Gatric Ease), as we feel this is very important for our horses’ wellbeing and helps them perform at their highest level. And we always find ourselves needing to buy a new broom, LOL! What’s something most people don’t know about you? We are pretty much an open book; our lives revolve around our family and our business. We take a lot of pride in the breeding program we have established at RTS and enjoy watching the horses we have produced go on to win national championships.

Years as a trainer: 26 Services/Discipline: Arabians/Half-Arabians and Saddlebreds | English, Driving and Hunter In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? 2020 was a trying year for so many. I learned through this quarantine process that there is nothing I enjoy more than training and spending time with my horses. As for the difficult times, being away from my loved ones was tough; as was having shows cancelled and sales taking a hit. And the positive, definitely having so much quality time to spend with each horse and watching them develop. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? The foal crop from our breeding program is very exciting for 2021; along with the addition of my new assistant, Blake Cuevas. He comes to us with a specialty in starting colts but is proving to be a huge asset to our show horse program as well. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? First, I’d give the Arabian horse industry credit for our quality of horses and horsemanship being second to none! I would, however, like to see our judges pool for the national level expand. I feel this would benefit not only the exhibitors and trainers but be good for the industry as a whole. What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I started out in English and that’s definitely where I have made my name. But over the years of training such a versatile breed as the Arabian, it’s taken me into several different disciplines. I’ve garnered wins not only in English, but show hack, driving and hunter as well. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? Long lines and bit wrap. What’s something most people don’t know about you? I’d say my love of sports! I started out playing basketball through high school and into college, then coached at the high school level. The competitive spirit in me made this experience not only memorable, but something I’m proud of to this day! Ar abian Horse Times | 148 | Volume 51, No. 5

Years as a trainer: 12 Services/Discipline: English and Hunter Trainer/Instructor In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? Having many horse shows cancelled gave me more time at home to really get my horses broke and put more buttons on them without rushing them, but it was also hard not having them to see where my horses were at compared to their competition. Liz bought two great junior horses in the beginning of the year and I feel as though those horses missed out on the last year of their Junior Horse show career. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? Rob Haar has continued to do an excellent job selecting the best stallions and mares to add to our breeding program. We had a truly outstanding foal crop in 2020 and I am hoping that we will have the same (if not better) quality in 2021. Stay tuned as we start to market our 2020 foal crop in 2021! What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? I loved watching Vegaz, Heirs Noble Love, and Black Daniels compete at U.S. Nationals this year. It was so much fun to watch those horses continue to compete when they have nothing to prove. I wish more owners and trainers would continue to bring back national champions and put on a horse show! What division did you start out competing in? How did you evolve into another division? Or made you stay with the one you started in? I started out showing hunter and western pleasure but quickly turned to equitation and showmanship because my backyard horses were not regional/national quality and I wanted to win! I worked summers in exchange to show a nice country horse and once I trotted in the ring the first time, I was hooked! What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? All of my Freedman Harness Advantage Comfort work tack! Why only show your horse in luxury, high quality tack when you can work them every day in it! What’s something most people don’t know about you? I am a HUGE Harry Potter nerd. Ar abian Horse Times | 150 | Volume 51, No. 5

In reflecting on the last year, what is something that you learned from it? What was the most difficult part for you? What was the most positive? Definitely, trusting that everything would be “fine” was the hardest thing. We are from the Northwest and all our shows just kept getting canceled. We attended one rescheduled Class A show in August and luckily, our customers were up for going to U.S. Nationals. The positive was a more laid-back way of life. We were home for the whole summer and took advantage of it by completing lots of projects. What new things will 2021 bring for your program? Keep looking forward. Staying positive. Believing everything is going to be ok and eventually will get back to “normal”. In 2020, we took trips to other facilities to ride with our customers and did quite a bit of trail riding. Everyone really enjoyed it, and we plan to continue with it in ‘21. What’s one thing you wish to see more of in our industry? Overall, our industry does a great job of supporting and helping each other, so would love to see the keyboard warriors go away and never come back. Positivity breeds positivity. Negativity breeds negativity. Helping each other is where it’s at. What’s one thing in your tack trunk you won’t leave home without? A very certain pair of draw reins. They are the perfect width and size, and we’ve had them for at least 15 years. This year at Nationals, we got back to our stalls and they were missing from our groom bag. We went back to the warm up and luckily, found them (I was ready to quit if not)! Haha! What’s something most people don’t know about you? Doug started a new hobby during the Covid lockdown. He took up making beautiful knives and sheaths. He really enjoys the craftsmanship and detail of creating knives. Kristi’s family has been putting on the Eugene Pro Rodeo since 1993 and when home from horse shows, carries the American Flag. Ar abian Horse Times | 152 | Volume 51, No. 5

IN MEMORIAM

MARVA JEAN FERGUSON

BRANDON BEY JCA

(1943-2020)

(2001-2020)

Marva Jean Ferguson, age 77, of St. Francis, slipped quietly into the loving arms of her husband, Ward, on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at home. Ward preceded Marva in death on June 11, 2020 and both are now at peace with the Father.

The prince of Jade Creek Arabians, Brandon Bey JCA, was peacefully laid to rest on November 11th. Born on the farm, Brandon’s journey started before birth. His dam, Hushahby Bey, had just won the Cal Bred Futurity Filly Championship when Manny knew instantly that he had to have her and struck a deal, bringing the future Bey Shah broodmatron home.

Born to Clarence and Celia (Ward) Trumble, Marva was a graduate of Marshall High School. She planned and managed many Arabian horse shows over the years, including at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul, MN. Marva was family oriented and often said that her real career was being a wife and mother. She traveled the country with the love of her life, Ward, and believed that the United States were the most beautiful on earth. Marva and Ward visited relatives and friends when traveling and anyone they loved were always considered a family member. Marva is survived by her children, Cherice (Michael) Gross, Karleen (Bill) Favreau, Heather Ferguson, Erin (Chad) Smith, Troy (Kathryn) Ferguson, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers, sistersin-law, brother-in-law, many nieces and nephews, friends, Larry and Shelly Jerome, and too many more friends (chosen family) to count.

Sired by the great Versace, Brandon Bey JCA was born from a genetic powerhouse blending of Hushahby’s Bey Shah and *Aladdinn blood. Aside from Brandon’s stellar show record and prowess as a breeding stallion, it was his quirky and unpredictable, sensitive character that set him apart from the rest. Brandon sired countless winners in halter and performance, earning many times leading sire status in the prestigious Scottsdale Signature Stallion futurity program. His sons and daughters were exported around the world, influencing breeding programs globally. Brandon Bey JCA and Manny shared a tremendous bond, together capturing a multitude of Regional Championships and Champion Stallion AAOTH at both the 2005 Canadian and U.S. Nationals. Waiting in the wings is One and Only JCA, sired by the Brandon Bey JCA son, Illuminati JCA, who gives us hope and encouragement for the future.
