he 13th annual Sport Horse National Championships was held in picturesque Raleigh, North Carolina, for the East rotation. The venue, The Governor James B. Hunt Jr. Horse Complex, is nestled against a welcoming and heavily forested backdrop with cedars, pine, oak, and birch trees. This National competition has a decidedly different atmosphere from the other Nationals shows that feature blended class offerings. There is no question that this is, in part, thanks to the fact that this is the only discipline-focused competition which features only “sport horse” classes that closely mirror all breed competitions for dressage, hunters, jumpers, driving, flat work and in-hand, with a few differences. In addition, many of the performance classes are not purebred or Half-Arabian specific, thus all entries frequently compete against one another. The competition, like all rated sport horse classes, samples judges with discipline appropriate certifications and all breed competition experience and expertise. The result is a competition that celebrates the Arabian not for breed type, but rather solely for form to function and athleticism. This opens the door for some of the breed’s most incredible athletes from all bloodlines and phenotypes to be judged solely on performance or, in the case of the in-hand division, on physical attributes for discipline-specific abilities. It is not uncommon to find a mix of horses in each class from halter, racing, main ring, or sport horse specific breeding programs. There is an incredible variety of classes for exhibitors and spectators to enjoy. Even more impressive is that many horses cross enter across many (in rare cases, all) divisions offered at the show. While glancing through the program, one discovered there were more than a dozen horses who were entered in more than 15 individual classes.

Another unique aspect of this show is that Arabians remain the only breed to offer a sport horse-specific national level competition. The allure of the opportunity to compete at a prestigious venue has become attractive to breed newcomers and each year there are many first-time exhibitors to the national show. New exhibitors are celebrated in center ring for a group photo opportunity to welcome them to the competition. It is also not uncommon to find exhibitors from all age categories, including many junior riders. Due to the fact that very few of the amateur classes require an “adult amateur” status, junior riders are able to compete in almost all classes alongside adult amateurs and professionals alike. For this year’s competition, the grounds themselves lent an intimate impression as the barns are predominately wooden, permanent structures with large inviting overhangs that encourage camaraderie among exhibitors. The setting proved perfect for the annual barn tours, where many farms participated serving everything from libations to barbeque and offering entertainment such as live music. The uncovered dressage arenas were against a forested backdrop and the permanent barns overlooked the beautiful outdoor hunter/jumper arena. The weather was more than favorable for much of the show, drawing out additional spectators to enjoy the sunshine and beautiful, athletic Arabian horses. The in-hand, rail, and driving classes were housed in the large indoor arena that boasts a covered walkway to an ample, indoor warmup/waiting area for exhibitors to prepare their horses. While longing spaces were limited, the under saddle/driving warm ups were ample. Each year, the competition adds additional classes or modifies existing offerings to give exhibitors more opportunities to showcase their horses. This year was no exception. New to the lineup was the western dressage division where two exhibition classes (basic level and first level) were offered and commanded a well-attended debut. This discipline has been growing in popularity in recent years and has gained fast appreciation on the Arabian horse circuit. Additionally, the jumper offering was expanded to include a Novice jumper exhibition class which saw a comparatively large number of entries juxtaposed to recent-year open jumper classes. The Novice jumpers, with lower fence heights,

Champion Sport Horse Stallion Hunter Type ATH and Reserve Champion Sport Horse Stallion Hunter Type Open The Bandera (Alixir x Arabella MCA), owned by Tom and Gail Chasteen, Rocky Face, Georgia. These two championship wins for The Bandera decidedly punctuate his remarkable career within the Arabian horse world. “This straight Egyptian stallion not only competes in multiple disciplines but wins at the highest levels,” says Tom Chasteen. “Over his ten year career, this versatile stallion has National,

Scottsdale, Egyptian Event, and Regional wins in main ring halter, hunter pleasure, western pleasure, sport horse in-hand, and dressage. Trainers such as Luis Paniagua at Arabians Ltd., Gary MacDonald, Brett and Marjie Becker, Tara Carpio, all played roles in his success. The Bandera stands at Jonesborough Farm in Culpeper, Virginia. His trainer, Larry Jones, says, “Over the last decade Jonesborough Farm has enjoyed the distinct privilege of stewardship for four U.S. National Champion Sport Horse In-Hand Stallions. It goes without saying that all have been incredibly beautiful specimens of the Arabian breed. None among them, however, has possessed the combined attributes of gentle kindness toward people, willing athleticism under saddle, and captivating Arabian type more than The Bandera.” After moving to Culpeper, Virginia, and being with Larry Jones for just two months, The Bandera became the Champion Arabian Stallion SHIH (six years and older) Hunter Type at this year’s East Coast Championship Show. With Larry at the lead, he received the highest score for all stallions at the show. With his most recent Championship wins at Sport Horse Nationals 2015, The Bandera has now earned the AHA Achievement Awards of “Legion of Supreme Honor” and “Legion of Supreme Merit” for his achievements in halter and performance. The Bandera has proven that straight Egyptian horses are capable of performing and winning at any discipline. “The future of our breed will be greatly enhanced by Bandera’s influence as a sire,” says Larry Jones. “I congratulate Tom and Gail Chasteen for having bred and enabled the success of such a beautiful stallion.”

encouraged young horses to participate as well as cross-entries from the hunter division to try the timed over fences class. The hunter over fences classes welcomed back *Oration, one of the breed’s winningest show horses. The 2004 son of Dormane captured his 31st and 32nd National/Reserve National Championships in Arabian Regular Working Hunter and Arabian Hunter Hack. The bay stallion has been a dominating force in the sport horse hunter, under saddle, and in-hand arenas since he made his showring debut in 2009. He is an excellent example of a stallion bred for the racetrack (where he was a money earner) who found his place in the working divisions of hunter over fences. His successes in the showring are so remarkable that he was even chosen as a model for a Breyer horse collectible and was invited to be a guest horse at the 2015 Breyerfest which was held in Lexington, Kentucky. For the second year in a row, the non-age-specific in-hand classes offered hunter and dressage separations, though many horses cross entered between the two sections. The in-hand divisions were well attended, with multiple classes having more than 20 entries. The supreme in-hand classes are different

from main ring halter as only national champions qualify and Half-Arabians and purebred mares, stallions, and geldings all compete against one another for the top title. There is no reserve championship in this winner takes all finals competition. Yearlings are not eligible to compete and two-year-olds have a separate supreme in-hand competition from the aged horses. This year, an MSU-bred (Michigan State University) gelding (MSU Bad Beat Benny) took home top honors as supreme champion in the aged horse division. This is the second year in a row that an MSU gelding captured this title. The top winning two-year-old was the Half-Arabian, warmblood gelding Furstafire bred by the sport horse breeding program Tobruk Farms (Susan McAdoo). The in-hand classes paralleled the U.S. National Championships in one respect in that a father/son pairing did 103 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ JANUARY 2016

Bill Ellzey with Champion Sport Horse Gelding Hunter Type Amiras Whirlwind (HSA Canis Major x HSA Amira Tajdol) and AHA Handler of Supreme Honor Henrietta Ellzey with Top Ten Sport Horse Mare Hunter Type, Top Ten Sport Horse Mare Dressage Type ATH, and Top Ten Sport Horse Under Saddle HSA Amazing Grace (Bask Elect x Al-Marah Adorable).

A Great Sport Horse National Show One of the many challenges that I face at major shows is learning the facility and the rhythm of how a show will run at that facility. Luckily, this year the AHA Sport Horse Nationals was held in Raleigh, North Carolina, a facility that I am familiar with. The changes in management helped the classes flow smoothly. The ring staff in the coliseum really helped keep things organized for the in-hand divisions. My own personal preparation paid huge dividends in the way of two National Championships and eight Top Tens. I spent weeks schooling to prepare for no longeing (I knew the longeing areas would be congested) and all of my help had our program down so we went the entire week without a glitch. The 2015 Canadian National Champion Sport Horse Gelding In-Hand Amiras Whirlwind was our first to go. On the first day of the show, he repeated that title at SHN in the Hunter Type Open. Amiras Whirlwind also earned Top Ten in the Dressage Type In-Hand Geldings. His owner, Henrietta Ellzey, did a superb job handling this amazing gelding in both In-Hand types for the ATH division and earned him two more Top Tens. Next up was Rosehill Alwaysalady in the Half-Arabian Mare Hunter Type Open. This mare, at only five years of age, stands 16.3 hands. She is a lovely Hanoverian cross owned by Barbara Sear Henson. Alwaysalady trotted a beautiful triangle for me and came out Top Ten. Then for the ATH class, my good friend Kelli Bennett handled her for the National Championship win. This gentle giant earned a Top Ten in the Dressage Junior Horse class with an honest test but not her best. There was a slope to those rings and that was not to her liking but she tried her heart out for me. Our final horse to hit the board in Raleigh was the veteran Bask Elect daughter HSA Amazing Grace. Grace, the polar opposite of Lady, stands 13.3 hands and rules the world. A Canadian Champion in Under Saddle Open, Grace is no stranger to the spotlight. However, Sport Horse Nationals has not been her luckiest of shows. In fact, SHN is the only time in her career that she was

ever shut out. Not this year! Grace was on game leading up to the show and I felt she was going to deliver. Grace is literally one of my best-trained horses of all time. Her first triangle for Hunter Type in-hand was really good and her Dressage Type run was out of the park. I was thrilled and it was her best ever, from my perspective. Well, as anyone who shows sport horses knows, the first run earned her a Top Ten and the second glory days run was for no prize. But Grace, never to be shorted, returned with Henrietta Ellzey in the ATH classes. They made a tremendous effort and earned not only that Top Ten in Hunter Type but also earned Henrietta her points to complete her Handler of Supreme Honor from the AHA. This was so rewarding for me because Henrietta began her show career as HSA Amazing Grace’s owner/handler in 2011. Bill Ellzey purchased Grace for his wife, and Grace was their first horse. Henrietta was past retirement age when this all began. Today, she is a confident handler who shows many of my training horses. In fact, she showed one last year that earned my client and herself their first National Championship in Canada. So this year at SHN to be able to share in both Grace’s and Amiras Whirlwind’s success with Henrietta was great fun. On the final day of the show we were enjoying all of those garlands hanging on the wall, but Miss Grace and I were not done. I had made my cut in the open under saddle and I had that final left as well as the First Level Dressage. We decided to scratch the First Level Dressage ride, even though we had been Regional Champion under one of the Dressage judges. I really wanted this under saddle title for Grace. So in one of the last classes at SHN, Grace hit that ring and performed like the champion that she is. It can be hard for a pony in the open classes but Grace is a wonderful mover and she is beautiful. We earned that Top Ten, proving being positive and confident can prevail even if the odds are two to one. We had a great 2015 SHN in Raleigh even with new challenges.

capture National or National Reserve Championships in-hand at the same show. AO Breeze was named both National Reserve Champion Sport Horse In-Hand Dressage Type and National Reserve Champion Sport Horse In-hand Hunter Type ATH while his son, Motivation I was named National Champion in Sport Horse In-Hand Two-Year-Old colts. AO Breeze has five National Reserve Championships to his credit, including an open Jumper title from the same show. The popular Gambler’s Choice pleasure driving competition is always well attended from a spectator perspective. This even features obstacles with varying levels of difficulty and correlating point values, that drivers must navigate in order to achieve the most points before their individual time expires. The event is fast-paced, fun, and always features great horses from the driving division. This year, the Gambler’s Choice National Championship was won by the purebred gelding VPF Nite Reign who won an impressive eight titles at this year’s Sport Horse National’s competition, all of which were in the driving division. This accomplished gelding has won 24 National Championships and Reserve Championships in the driving division over his show career. Many classes boasted a high number of entries this year, but the largest class was the Arabian Sport Horse Under Saddle Amateur to Ride Championship that had an incredible 58 entries enter the gate. This year the highly competitive class was won by Aur Magic Mirage and owner/rider Kaylan Herbst. This 2005 mare also won Top Tens in dressage in Arabian Dressage First Level AAOTR, Dressage First Level ATR, and Dressage Second Level AAOTR. The Sport Horse Under Saddle division showcases working horses on the flat. Kaylan Herbst was also National Champion in the Arabian Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior Horse class on her four-year-old stallion, TA Caarnot, over 30 horses and professional riders. TA Caarnot was also Top Ten in the Training Level Junior Horse and the Arabian Hunter Hack Junior Horse. As with many of the National Shows, Sport Horse Nationals boasted two fundraisers to give back. The Sport Horse Nationals sponsored event was a silent auction near the show office where exhibitors/spectators donated to support the Arabian Horseman’s Distress Fund and Duke Children’s Hospital.

In addition to the Arabian Horse Association sponsored classes and events, Markel hosted a catered fundraiser for the Arabian Horseman’s Distress Fund’s Create Your Own Champion event. Their fundraiser raffled breedings to some of the breed’s most accomplished sport horse stallions. Chances to win were $50 a ticket and many stallions had dozens of entries. Overall, the 13th annual Sport Horse Nationals was a resounding success, entries stayed strong, the new classes were embraced by exhibitors, and the warm venue invited everyone to stay a little longer and talk a little more. As usual, the horses and exhibitors didn’t disappoint and gave powerful performances across all divisions. This venue affords Arabians the opportunity to be showcased in a unique way that attracts new enthusiasts that perhaps might not have otherwise considered an Arabian as their sport horse venue partner. There is no question that this magical show will continue to draw additional competitors in the future and that the first-time exhibitor’s photo will continue to welcome new faces each year. Every opportunity for the Arabian horse to showcase additional elements of versatility is another opportunity to capture the affections of new admirers and rekindle existing ones.

Champion Half-Arabian Sport Horse Gelding Dressage Type Raayder (Rosenthal x Afirelight by Afire Bey V), owned by Signe Kay Smith, Joliet, Illinois, and shown by Tim Schaap. “I just wanted to say how nice it was to be back at Sport Horse Nationals!” says Signe Smith. “The last time I was there as an exhibitor was in 2009 when my two-year-old Half-Arabian went National Champion in-hand. In 2010 I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease and then in 2011, suddenly lost my National Champion Half-Arabian. I bought my current Arab-Oldenberg gelding from the same breeder as my previous horse, right after he went top

ten as a yearling. There were times I thought I would have to sell Raayder, but I fought not only for my life, but to keep Raayder. In addition to his championship, he brought home a National Reserve Championship in Half-Arabian Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior Horse, and four Top Tens dressage and in-hand “Also, the breeders of my horse, Susan and Dave McAdoo, are small time breeders but they had another Half-Arabian who brought home numerous titles and they also bred the National Champion Half-Arabian two-year-old in-hand gelding who also went Supreme In-hand Champion. Almost all of their Half-Arabian Warmblood horses have national titles who show at Sport Horse Nationals and the ones that show USDF have won at Devon, etc. — pretty amazing people!” 107 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ JANUARY 2016

Middle: AO Breeze (Aclsic Raff x Mosha Khaitlyn), owned by Morgan and Ryan Moore, Pilot Point, Texas, is a five-time National Reserve Champion and the only living stallion to be named a U.S. National Champion in both halter and jumping competition (according to Arlene Magid). At the 2015 Sport Horse Nationals, AO Breeze added six National titles to his incredible show record including: Reserve Champion Sport Horse Stallion Dressage Type, Reserve Champion Open Jumper, Reserve Champion Sport Horse Stallion Hunter Type ATH, Top Ten Power and Speed Jumper, Top Ten Hunter Type Open, and Top Ten Dressage Type ATH. At the 2015 Sport Horse Nationals show his son, Motivation I, earned the title of Sport Horse National Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. AO Breeze’s show career has spanned both the main ring and sport horse arenas. His Scottsdale, Regional, National and World Cup titles span jumping, training level dressage, first level dressage, sport horse show hack, sport horse in-hand, and halter. AO Breeze stands to a limited public book with Morgan and Ryan Moore at MLM Arabians in Pilot Point, Texas. Left: Champion Two-Year-Old Sport Horse Colt Motivation I (AO Breeze x Marvfelous), owned by Tracy Glover, Leonard, Texas, and shown by Wendye Gardiner. He is pictured here with Tracy, left, and Morgan Moore. Motivation I was bred and is owned by Illuminati Arabians of Leonard, Texas. He was Sport Horse National Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and also captured the Region 9 Champion Two-Year-Old Sport Horse In-Hand Colt title this year. Motivation I is from Illuminati Arabians’ second foal crop. Their program focuses on producing beautiful athletes with the size, charisma, and quality to compete in both the sport horse division and main ring. Currently, Illuminati has young prospects in training and competing in sport horse, halter, hunter pleasure, western pleasure, dressage and endurance. Motivation is a tall, elegant, and correct individual with exceptional movement and quality. His sire is the fivetime National Reserve Champion AO Breeze and his dam is Marvfelous by *Doran SBFAR (full sibling to *Oration) out of *Mufka PASB by Polish National Reserve Champion Partner. Motivation is just beginning his show career, and plans are to enter him in both sport horse and main ring performance when he is of age. Motivation is currently in training with Wendy Potts at Freewill Farm for hunter pleasure. He will stand at stud in the future until sold.

Arabian Horse World was proud to join Markell Insurance a co-sponsor of a stallion raffle to benefit the Arabian Horseman’s Distress Fund. Over one-hundred people gathered around the Chesapeake Training Center stall fronts on Saturday evening for this special event. Guests enjoyed a wide variety of fine wines hosted by the Black Stallion Estate Winery and an elegant buffet of appetizers. All this while listening to an expert panel discussion on good conformation of the Sport Horse from speakers Kathy Smoke, Virginia Godwin, Larry Jones, David Conner, and Greta Wrigley. However, the main attractions were some of the stallions in the raffle. It was a pleasure to see these beautiful, athletic stallions who represent our Sport Horse division.
