eauville itself is the most beautiful old harbor town in northern France, well worth a visit at the best of times, all the more so when the Arabian Cup is held at the stunning equine center just a few miles out, and the hospitality from the organizing committee is second to none. The arena is bright, modern and airy and the stabling superb, plus all the stables were already laid with fresh bedding so deep we had to jump up and down on it to get the horses through the doorways! The show is run by the charming Eric Gear, with help from his wife Patricia Gear, Laurence Boccard, and their committee, and is held under ECAHO rules, where no prize money is allowed but they have added their own Yearling Championships, sponsored this year by Al Khashab Stud, Kuwait, and worth 5,000 euros each. Everyone was made to feel most welcome; not only were the VIP tables laden down with champagne, canapés, and other delights, but there were plenty of (nonalcoholic!) refreshments and foody bits laid out in the collecting ring too, far more necessary for the hard working, hot handlers. All this resulted in a very convivial, almost relaxed atmosphere, enhanced by plenty of music from the Rolling Stones! The four judges this year were Christian Bourassé, France; Maria Ferraroni, Italy; Tomasz Tarczynski, Poland; and Koenraad Detailleur, Belgium.

The first yearling filly class was headed by two EKS Alihandro daughters, typically with that wonderful pizzazz of his that he passes on. There was only half a point separating them, but it was Al Shahania’s very leggy and elegant black Love Chimes LD daughter, Rasha Al Shahania, who won the class, a little light in condition at the moment after her travels, she narrowly beat another homebred, Kuwait’s Al Mai Stud’s Sultanate Al Mai out of the El Perfecto daughter Abha La Luna, an elegant little bay who showed very well. Winner of the second yearling filly section was a smart bay Emerald J daughter, Esmaelia Al Haven, owned and bred by Marine Lamoureux, France, and Al Thumama’s Kahil Al Shaqab daughter, Emara AT, another nice bay out of a Botswana daughter, was second. Last into the ring but easily into first place in the two-year-old fillies and eventual Gold Junior Female was the wonderful moving machine Al Aryam Shammogh (Eden C x Al Aryam Suhayla by Marwan), a fabulous fun-loving chestnut who never stops trotting, tail over back, and when she’s not trotting
for 20 she’s doing a 21! Shammogh has a lovely rounded, athletic way of going, and similar to her sire in more ways than one, this pretty filly also gives a nice stand-up and never stops trying. Strangely Shammogh only received three 20s for movement (and a 19.5) although she was also awarded Best Movement Female of the show. Second to Shammogh was the bay Shah Arousa, homebred by Amir Ali Sardar Afkhami, Arousa is by Fadi Al Shaqab out of an Om El Extreem daughter and really does have such exquisite, dainty, and incredibly soft features, helping her to become Silver Champion. Winner of the three-year-old class wasn’t following the day’s type — although she did in color as she was another bay — but she actually isn’t a Marwan descendant! HB Angelina, bred and owned by Heather Brown of the U.K. by Santorini out of the U.S.-bred MC Angelica (Magic Dream CAHR), is an out and out show horse. She stormed the ring and gave a stonking pose to take the class from Schoukens Training Centre’s lovely bay Marwtyna (ZT Marwteyn x Evita-N). HB Angelina went on to 3 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b JANUARY 2017

take the Bronze in the Junior Female Championship as well as the award for Best European Horse. Al Thumama’s very successful and Right: Gold Champion Junior Filly Al Aryam Shammogh (Eden C x Al Aryam extreme black mare Ava (Vervaldee x Suhayla), owned by Al Aryam Arabians, UAE. Aziza), showed well as ever to take the four- to seven-year-old class over the very harmonious Ermonia, a super grey (at last!) by Ajman Moniscione out of Erigone by Ekstern. Ermonia is mostly Polish in type, a lovely, quality mare yet with more of a Moniscione face, and these two ended up as Silver and Bronze Senior Females respectively. However, the Gold was awarded unanimously to the easy winner of the eight-year-old and over mare class, the ethereal SA Minerva, an extremely feminine, snow-white Royal Colours daughter out of Cicilla by Borsalino K, bred by Angelo Scipione and now owned by Al Khashab. This sublime mare really is very beautiful and deservedly gained 374 points, the highest score of the show, as well as Best In Show Female. The colt classes didn’t follow the same form as the females in more ways than just the one, in that some were actually grey and had no Marwan in them. In fact winner of the first class, the pretty, well made Anaaz Al Fayyad (Fayad Al Fayyad x Katifa Al Zobair) is 4 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b JANUARY 2017
actually pink at the moment. He was eventually awarded the Bronze Yearling Colt, behind Shah Pirouz, winner of the second section of yearlings. Shah Pirouz (Pogrom x Shah Mashougha) is hard to fault, although it was a little surprising that in his class he beat the stylish French National Champion Styx Kalliste, albeit by half a point. The extravagant Styx Kalliste is a very light grey by Shanghai EA out of L’A Saalmah, by BS specific. He’s also extremely tall! However, in the Championship the placings were reversed and Styx Kalliste went on to become Gold Junior Male (unanimous). Things were back to normal in the two-year-old colt class, with the bay QR Marc son R’adjah de Cartherey taking it easily. This balanced, well made, substantial showman has done very well this season already, including winning Best in Show at the Tulip Cup, and unsurprisingly went on to take the Gold Junior Male here. Another smart QR Marc son was second to him, the chestnut Magnums Volcan KA out of the super FS Magnum’s Madonna, who was later awarded Silver Champion. Bronze Junior Male went to Tsar Nerio, sadly the only entrant in the three-year-old colt class, a nice chestnut by Largo de Sarjevane out of
a Padrons Immage daughter, owned by Sabrina Schwab of France and bred by Christie Garrigou. Not many can make a greater arena entrance than EKS Alihandro, but his son EKS Mansour always has a good crack at it. Al Shahania’s grey showman took the class by storm, getting a scattering of 19.5s in most areas, plus some very good body marks, giving him a total of 371, second only in points to SA Minerva. The flamboyant white-grey Shakar Pegasus (Shaezz El Madan x Jamaal Pegasus) was second, showing glimpses of outstanding movement; this very pretty young stallion is one to look out for. As expected, EKS Mansour was the unanimous Gold Senior Male and Shakar took Silver, over the only stallion forward for the eight-year-old and
above class, the chestnut Fahim Ishane OS (Ajman Moniscione x Praetoria by Kubinec). Fahim gave a great display of how an Arab really should move, gaining three x 20 along the way for movement. This chap showed a huge trot around the big arena again and again and how refreshing it was to see him, in this day of continuous canter circles, with handlers trying to convince the judges that their horse is a big mover, hoping it will get marked on the couple of lift strides it gives before launching into canter! At this show both Al Aryam Shammogh and Fahim Ishane OS proved my adage: those who can, trot, those who can’t, canter.
