To adapt to a constantly changing population, Scottsdale has responded by adding classes from time to time to reflect these changes. The “original” halter classes at Scottsdale were renamed “Classic.” They were followed by the International halter classes, so that those horses that didn’t fit the North American “look” had classes and a judging panel that favored the European style. A few years ago, straight Egyptian and Egyptian “Heritage” (Egyptian related, but not straight Egyptian bloodlines) classes were added to the show within the International division. (See the coverage of the Egyptian classes in our May Egyptian issue.) Futurity classes began with the Scottsdale Signature Stallion division, open to horses sired by a stallion in the program. You had to nominate the foal before it was born, and it had to be shown by an amateur. Those are the “SSS” classes. To that was added the “SSS Auction” class. This is the richest of the futurity classes. In order to qualify for the SSS Auction class, you had to purchase a stud fee at the annual auction held during the show. The resulting foal from that stud fee qualified for the auction class. So all told, three Exxalt yearlings won over $45,000 for their proud owners! The SSS Auction Championship winner for yearling colts/geldings was Domyno, an RD Dynamo son out of Ghazala El Jamaal. Owned and shown by Laura Koch, this colt won $31,350. Reserve Champion was the Pegasus Arabians bred colt, Believer PA (Masquerade PA x Fadila PCF) shown by Kenneth McDonald, winning $15,675. Winner of the SSS Auction Championship for yearling fillies was the beautiful black Raven M, by *Kahil Al Shaqab out of the DA Valentino daughter Kharisma M. Bred and shown by Anthony Marino, she won over $31,000. Reserve Champion, winning over $15,000, was RHR Anna Lena B, by OFW Magic Wan out of the extraordinary producing mare Amety B. Then, as stated earlier, standing third in this class was the Exxalt daughter, Anna Lexxa PCF. There were two three-year-old SSS Auction classes for amateur owners to show. Winner of the Three-Year-Old Stallion Championship was the Titan AS son, Quantico PA (x RD Challs Angel). Top: Champion Classic Senior Mare *Queen Ayda FWM (*FA El Shawan x TN Mariani), owned by Orrion Farms, Ellensburg, Washington, and shown by David Boggs.
“We are beside ourselves with joy for these special horses,” says Steve Poore of Orrion Farms. “*Queen Ayda FWM (FA El Shawan x TN Mariani), unanimous Scottsdale Champion Senior Mare, Naillla de Bloodstone (Etaya Sudan Amir x MB Pirouette), Gold Straight Egyptian Mare, and Exxaltress (Excalibur EA x Vesperra), First Place Two-Year-Old Filly April 16 through December 31, are back at the farm, and they love being out in the pasture with the rest of the herd. They’ll take a break from the show circuit, grow out their winter coats, and enjoy just being horses. Now, of course, they begin their primary role as foundation broodmares as they are an important part of our breeding program. “El Rey Magnum RCF (Basilio CS x Cirque Du Soleil BF), unanimous Scottsdale Champion International Yearling Colt, had an exciting debut, to say the least. He is enjoying the winter in Scottsdale preparing for the Vegas show. “Our Marquise Auction purchase, Aurora Aljassimya (Marwan Al Shaqab x Diamond Lil), got our attention the first time we visited Bart at Aljassimya in Santa Ynez. She checks all of the boxes: pedigree, conformation, temperament, produces high quality foals, and she is truly an all-around, versatile mare … exactly the kind of mare we want in our program. We plan to breed, ride, and fill her with carrots! “One of the most interesting things we love about Arabians is their fascinating personalities. We have a two-month-old colt, OFW Lazo (JJ Bellagio x Duchess Of Marwan) (“loop” in Spanish), and

he is one of the most curious and charming characters. Besides running thousands of circles around his dam for exercise, he is always the first one that comes over for a nuzzle and scratch. Everyone who meets Lazo adores him. “We are fortunate to have such a dedicated and experienced team here at the farm. Our team started a breeding program from scratch, which allowed us amazing flexibility when choosing broodmares and breeding pairs. Thankfully, the show horses we purchased have been successful, now time will tell if breeding OFW horses can continue our success. We have eight foals on the ground, and all indications show we are headed in the right direction.”

In the SSS Two-Year-Old Gelding Championship, the winner was the SF Veraz gelding Veroc PCF, out of Majoretta by DS Major Afire. This beautiful gelding has a great performance pedigree and should be one to look out for in the future. In the SSS Two-Year-Old Filly class, Sara Bella SDA (Marhaabah x Scarlett SDA) took home the Championship ribbon, followed by the wonderfully named Ever After filly, Happily Everafter LRA out of Ultimate Desire LRA. She was owned and handled by Ron Armstrong. There were 15 colts in the SSS Two-Year-Old Stallion Championship, and the charismatically named son of *Hariry Al Shaqab, Elvis SBA, won the class. This grey colt out of Epiphany DDA, with a superb body and a very upright carriage, was shown to the win by Ryan Moore for breeder Stella Bella Arabians. Reserve to Elvis SBA was the Trussardi colt Manhattan LD, out of the Stival daughter Princess Stivalia LD. In the SSS Three-Year-Old Championships, 42 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b APRIL 2018
Champion Stallion was Hermes MA, by *Hariry Al Shaqab. It was a unanimous decision for this son of Legacys Treasure by the great Legacy of Fame. Hermes MA is owned by Al Nayfat Stud of Saudi Arabia and was shown by Steve Miles. Reserve was Quantico PA, the beautiful son of the first foal crop of the multi-Champion Titan AS (El Nabila B x Om El Belladeena). Royally bred top and bottom, Quantico is out of the mare RD Challs Angel. The Champion SSS Three-Year-Old Mare was MVA Heavens Veraz (SF Veraz x MVA Heavens Grace). This lovely grey mare is a beautiful blend of the very best of Polish, Egyptian and Russian bloodlines. Reserve went to the Vitorio TO daughter, Angel of Vitorio ORA, out of Star of Justice ORA. This bright chestnut with a perfect star was winner of her auction class last year. Grand Promise NA lived up to his name by winning the SSS Three-YearOld Gelding class. By Grand Commandd out of Promises Psy, he was owned and shown by Jeffrey Frahm. Grand Commandd scored a one-two punch by also producing the Reserve Champion gelding, Grand Augustus, out of the Magnum Chall HVP daughter, Mistichall UA. The Four-And-Over SSS Championships were smaller in class size but made up for it in quality. producing mare Amety B. Bred by Stephanie McMahon, she was owned by Cumberland Mountain Equine. Reserve Champion was Olympiaa, by Magnum Psyche, out of the Brass daughter, Ames Mirage. Al Nayfat Stud of Saudia Arabia collected another Championship with Veyron ORA (Vitorio TO x Luxemere Jizette) in the SSS Four-And-Over Stallions/Geldings class. I guess this is what you would expect when you breed a U.S. National Champion three-year-old colt to a U.S. National Champion three-year-old filly! Reserve to Veyron ORA was the DA Valentino son Aramis LBA out of another great producing mare, Amelia B, who just happens to be the daughter of Amety B, who produced the winner of the SSS Four-And-Over Stallions/Geldings ATH class! Aramis LBA, is owned by Ali Brady. Scottsdale is adding an additional program starting in 2018, called the Signature Gelding Incentive Program. Horse owners who breed to Scottsdale Signature Stallions can buy into the gelding program for $25 when they nominate their SSS mare.
Any yearling gelding that has been enrolled in the program will compete in a yearling gelding open class. The following year, as two year olds, the geldings will have an opportunity to go through the Gelding Initiative Auction that will be held at the Scottsdale show. Judges for the International division were Eileen Verdieck, U.S., Corky Sutton, U.S., Richard Petty, U.S., Rodrigo Forte, Brazil, and Majdi Al Saleh, Jordan. The International Breeders “Classic classes were for the European-type horses. Emerald J offspring have been scooping up big prizes across the pond, so it was not a surprise that the Gold Champion Yearling Filly was Atare Al Shahania (Emerald J x MFA Annies Song), shown by Michael Byatt for Al Shahania Stud, Doha, Qatar. Unanimous Gold Champion Yearling Colt was El Rey Magnum RCF (Basilio CS x Cirque Du Soleil BF) shown by David Boggs for Orrion Farms. This bay colt with a very extreme face has been much discussed on social media. Cameras exploded all over the arena when the colt came in, but he took everything in stride and showed very well. Contrary to expectations, I believe he scored one 20 for head. However, he has an excellent body, especially in the hip and croup, and should be acknowledged for more than just his head. Gold Champion Junior Filly was Ghazelle WPI (EKS Alihandro x Ghazala El Jamaal). Bred and owned by Paul and Bianca Clark and shown by Steve Heathcott, 43 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b APRIL 2018
RODRIGO FORTE By Cindy Reich One of the International judges at the Scottsdale show was Rodrigo Forte, a multi-generational horseman and Arabian breeder from Brazil. Rodrigo, his sister, and his parents Carlos and Marisa own RFI Arabians in Brazil, where they have been breeding Arabian horses for over 30 years and are on their fifth generation of offspring. He might be best known for producing the stallions RFI Maktub (Altam Yshmayl x RFI Cyntilation) and RFI Farid (RFI Maktub x RFI Fayara El Shiraz). Rodrigo has been a judge for over 20 years, and this was his first time judging in the United States. He is married to Sabrina Forte and has two lovely children, Felipe and Marina. Tell us about your experience judging the International classes at Scottsdale this year. Judging Scottsdale was a huge joy to me, for the importance of the show, the high quality of the horses and, particularly, because it was the first time I judged a show in the U.S. The first time I went to Scottsdale was in 1993 when I was still a kid. After that, I went back several times, and I never imagined that one day I would go back to judge. It was sensational! What did you think of the quality of the horses you judged? I would like to take several horses that I judged to my farm. I liked males and females, but I was especially impressed with the classes of females. It was incredible and difficult to judge the female finals because we had a lot of good ones in the arena. This makes the show even more extraordinary. I really enjoyed the quality of the horses in general. You can always see great horses in Scottsdale. I have been following the American breeding for almost 30 years, and every time I go to the shows in the U.S. I see the consistency and the advances of this breeding, always among the best in the world. The Arab horses from the U.S. and Brazil have a very strong connection. I was very happy to see Brazilian horses and descendants of Brazilian horses winning in Scottsdale.

Ghazelle WPI came out of a two-class split of two-year-old mares, but emerged as high point two-year-old filly with a score of 330. I judged this mare’s dam in Australia many years ago, making her Junior Champion at the time, and Ghazala El Jamaal eventually came to the U.S., where she was U.S. National Champion sixto seven-year-old mare in 2014, so I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for both the mare and this filly. It was nice to see her recognized for the quality filly she is. Gold Champion Junior Colt was *Royal Asad (El Tino x Lumiar Ethna) who was second in his three-year-old stallion class, but he turned it on in the Championship to take the gold garland. Owned by Royal Arabians and shown by Rodolfo Guzzo. This impressive and extremely typey bay stallion was one of my favorites of the International show. Gold Champion Senior Mare was the very strong *Minwah (Kahil Al Shaqab x LC Primavera) who is no stranger to the winner’s circle in Europe. She continued her winning ways here as she took the six- and seven-year-old mare class and then prevailed in the Championship to take the gold garland for owners Aljassimya farm, shown by Giacomo Capacci. Gold Champion Senior Stallion came from the winner of the four- to fiveyear-old stallion class, which was *Falah Al Shaqab (Fadi Al Shaqab x Joseph Just Emotion), shown by Michael Byatt for breeder and owner Al Shaqab. Although still a relatively young stallion, I believe he has won nearly every show he has entered, so this is just another step on a long list of accomplishments for him. It is hard to believe that 63 years ago, there were only a handful of halter classes at the Scottsdale show. However, when I was a child, I remember watching at the McCormick Ranch show arena as three complete circles of young fillies stood

Some of these champions might go across the ocean to campaign in France, Germany, or perhaps Qatar or Saudi Arabia. ersatility” sums up our breeding and performance program. At Scottsdale 2018, due to our “day job” conflicts, we only brought three horses. With those three, we won Champion or Top Tens in reining, ranch riding, ranch sorting, Sport Horse under saddle, and Sport Horse in hand. Gary Ferguson and one of our stallions, Picante Jullyen V (*Jullyen El Jamaal x Precious V), top tenned both in reining and ranch riding. Our gelding Renegade Mac V (Maclintock V x Ravvens Skylark) won his Sport Horse Show Hack class, was Reserve Champion Sport Horse In-Hand with Trish Nelson, and top tenned in the Sport Horse Under Saddle ATR with Reed Brainard. Andy Camacho won Reserve Champion Herd Work with Cowgirl Jake RS (Jake Jamaal JCA x SC Chipawa Chinks). Chinks (by Desperado V) was our first National Reserve Champion Working Cow Horse in 2006, so it is especially gratifying for a small breeder to see offspring achieve championships like their parents. SC Chipawa Chinks also gave us Chicago Chaps RS (by *Jullyen El Jamaal) who was 2013 U.S. National Reserve Champion Trail Junior Horse and Champion Trail Futurity and has gone on to win many more National titles in western and English trail and horsemanship. For Dick and me, producing horses that are beautiful as well as competitive in open and amateur classes is the ultimate. Dick is usually the only rider with an Arab or Half-Arab in the historic Rancheros Visitadores Ride in Santa Barbara every year, where 900 to 1,000 horses parade, trail ride, and compete for a week. Raising our horses in a natural setting with daily turnout and exposure to cattle, mountain trails, and other real world experiences, makes them fit, brave, and happy. Pedigree and conformation do not always tell us what the horse does best. We let the horses tell us what they excel in and bring each along at its own pace. We are grateful to our resident trainers, Rae Laczny and Byron Light, as well as our outside trainers, Gary Ferguson, Jill Mitchell, Trish Nelson, and Andy Camacho, for helping to bring out the best in our horses and riders. And to our ranch crew who nurture them daily.
