A Breeder’s Vision
For many breeders, it is a dream to produce an Arabian stallion that will progress the Arabian breed to the next level. A dream that requires great vision and years of dedication, effort, carefully planned decisions and often, disappointments. Many attempt, but few achieve. The young sire Exxalt (*Excalibur x Vesperra) exemplifies the realization of one such vision, fueled by Ted Carson and embraced by owners and breeders Frances Butler, Jeff and Sybil Collins, and James and Kay Smith. Enjoy their thoughts on Exxalt’s journey. “The vision was to produce a breeding stallion who was typey, fault-free, and who moved well, and whose pedigree supported many of the stallions with whom we have previously been involved. We wanted to ensure confidence that those traits would be passed along to the offspring, while also including an outcross from most current pedigrees,” says Ted.
Heritage
“Exxalt is a unique combination of the most prestigious bloodlines from around the globe that combined to create a stallion who is the epitome of Arabian pedigree and phenotype; the complete package that is typey and structurally sound. He enables breeders to obtain good traits to carry forward while not risking the possibility of obtaining a major fault from the sire line. “The Smith/Collins/Butler partnership purchased the grandam of Exxalt, the lovely straight Egyptian filly LF Triumphant Star, in 2007. As a two-year-old, Triumphant Star exuded a depth of quality and of body that is rare in straight Egyptians, and was a nice mover as well. Her pedigree was attractive and enabled her to be an outcross to almost any stallion we would choose to breed her to. “The dam of Exxalt, Vesperra, was the result of the decision to breed LF Triumphant Star to SF Veraz. During the years we were heavily breeding mares to SF Veraz, we found that he consistently gave us three things: length of leg, throatlatch, and tight muzzles. Additionally, he sired good-minded, trainable foals. Vesperra was no exception and was perhaps his best filly that we produced on our farm. “Upon selecting *Excalibur EA to bring the Shanghai EA blood into our program, Vesperra was bred to him via embryo transfer. Excalibur EA demonstrated exceptional tail carriage and movement, good legs, and a tight muzzle which we wanted to reinforce in our broodmare band. Vesperra was two years old at the time and so was *Excalibur EA. As a result, this was the first time that the resulting foal’s pedigree would exist, as this was the oldest offspring of SF Veraz and Shanghai EA. That resulting foal was Exxalt. “Our goal was to create an individual who was excellent all the way across the board — a colt that we could embrace, support, and move forward with. One whose pieces, when applied to the scorecard, would collectively and individually score high, even legs! One whose pedigree had the strength to instill his traits in his offspring.” According to Dr. Jeff Collins, “We all dream, and sometimes dreams come true. Exxalt is the culmination of years of thoughtful breeding by the owners and breeders of this young stallion, breeding decisions guided by Ted Carson.”

Future
“To date, Exxalt has repeatedly confirmed our vision,” says Ted. “The moment Exxalt hit the ground, he was a special animal. He was shown to Scottsdale Gold Champion Colt honors as a yearling. The following year Exxalt had an excellent breeding year as a two-year-old. He covered 30 mares that resulted in 27 foals due in 2017. This year, his first foals have arrived from a variety of bloodlines exemplifying beauty, type, and strength of body, excellent necks and shoulders, and great carriage.” Frances Butler adds, “The 2017 Exxalt foals represent four generations owned by us. Grandam, dam, Exxalt himself, and several foals are owned by the same partnership of myself, Jeff and Sybil Collins, and Kay and James Smith.” “Currently, Exxalt is breeding a large group of mares this season,” says Ted. “Next we will compete for the U.S. National Champion Futurity Colt title this fall. “With Exxalt standing at the cusp of a dramatic impact within the breed, astute horsemen and women are putting their faith in this young sire, and reaping the rewards. The culmination of a vision, Exxalt exemplifies the complete Arabian sire, the next step forward.”
