Sire of 1,200 foals and a full list of stars around the world, the glorious Padrons Psyche is one of the architects of the breed we know today. At the age of 29, the great horse has certainly earned his life of leisure.

Padrons Psyche is the perfect link between 20th and 21st century Arabian breeding. Deeply rooted in the tradition of the European foundation breeders, he is one of the architects of the breed we know today. On the brink of his 30th year, he embodies the bridge between the past and the future. Though registered as being bred by the McPherson Family Trust, Psyche comes from the breeding program of Make-Believe Farm. During the 1980s, Robert Stratmore’s Make Believe Farm was one of the foremost breeders of Russian Arabians in the United States. Stratmore imported Psyche’s sire *Padron as well as his maternal grandparents, *Tamerlan and *Kilifa, and bred Psyche’s dam, Kilika. By 1988, the year of Psyche’s birth, the farm itself may have been history, but Padrons Psyche embodies its breeding program like no other. The top sires at Make Believe Farm, *Padron and *Tamerlan, were quite a contrast. *Padron, by the exotic Aswan son Patron out of the Crabbet mare *Odessa, was the embodiment of type, with an extremely dished face courtesy of his sire, and a golden chestnut coat with flashy white markings courtesy of his allEnglish dam and typical for the family of Rodania, the 1869 desertbred mare to whom he traces in tail female line. *Tamerlan on the other hand, bred at Tersk, was by the Polish stallion Arax out of Trapecia, a mare of Polish and Crabbet breeding with a dash of French. A dark bay, he represented the Polish Kuhailan type, a horse with solid conformation and legs who had proved his mettle at the racetrack in Russia, tall, with a straight face rather than exotic type, but very refined. In his dam line, he also traced to a Crabbet foundation mare, Sobha, who was bred by Ali Pasha Sherif. Last but by no means least, Psyche’s maternal grandam *Kilifa was bred by Henry and Silvia Garde, the pioneers of Russian breeding in Germany. She was sired by the great Aswan son Kilimandscharo, another source of extreme type coupled with good basic conformation, out of Kapelka, who was also by Aswan. That makes three crosses to Aswan, who is the source of extremely dished faces in Russian Arabians. As for the dam line, it goes back to Crabbet Park yet again, in this case to the desertbred mare Dafina of the Kuhailah Krush strain, which is an extremely rare family today. In fact, Psyche exemplifies everything Crabbet Park aimed for: a horse with superb type, good conformation, and size. It has always been my feeling that, if Lady Wentworth were alive today, she would certainly have tried to buy him. While there is no Lady Wentworth, quite a few people did buy him; he changed hands seven times, five times within the first six years of his life. He was first sold as a foal, then again as a yearling, as a threeyear-old, as a four-year-old, and again at the age of six. At age three, owned jointly by Zahara Bloodstock, Inc. and Four Star Arabians, Inc., he was campaigned by David Boggs, like his sire before him. Unlike *Padron, he did not make it to U.S. National Champion, but he was Reserve National Champion in 1991

as a three-year-old, and the youngest horse to win that title. He also collected some regional halter wins, including Region Five Champion Stallion. After spending six years with Futuro, Inc., he was purchased by Robert and Dixie North, who are most closely associated with him and owned him for a longer period than any other breeder in the United States. Psyche’s own show record is good, but not extraordinary; it is first and foremost as a sire that he will be remembered. Among the breeders who first used him, prior to his National Reserve win, were Loy and Linda Davidson and Wayne Newton, with excellent results. His two oldest daughters bred by the Davidsons, Focus Galliana and Focus Seneca, were also the first of his get exported to Europe, and successful broodmares in Britain where Galliana founded quite a dynasty. Another early daughter, Psyches Amber Gem, bred by Zahara in 1993 out of the straight Egyptian mare AK Zabiya, was World Champion both as a junior and as a senior and Psyche’s first big international winner. Other prominent horses from the Zahara/Four Star period include the 1997 Scottsdale Champion FS Ritz and the French National Champion Padrons Immage, sire of the reigning European Gold Champion and World Bronze Champion Stallion, Im Bayard Cathare. In the ten years spanning from 1995 to 2005, Padrons Psyche had his most active years at stud. He has sired more than 1,200 foals altogether, most of them born within this time frame, and it’s a list full of stars. Without doubt, his most successful son has been Magnum Psyche, foaled in 1995 out of the straight Spanish mare A Fancy Miracle. Campaigned by Midwest like his sire and grandsire before him, Magnum Psyche has been Brazilian and U.S. National Champion and Scottsdale Champion and a hugely influential sire in his own right. In particular, he is the sire of the phenomenal WH Justice, who has singlehandedly done more to distribute this line across the world than any other horse. There are successful Magnum sons

all over the world, including AB Magnum in South America, Magnum Forty Four in Australia, and MCA Magnum Gold in the Middle East, but none of them can touch WH Justice. Sometimes you get a line where in each generation, one particular stallion emerges who is head and shoulders above the rest, and this appears to be one of them. Padrons Psyche is far and away *Padron’s most significant son; Magnum Psyche is the same for Padrons Psyche; WH Justice for Magnum Psyche; and there is every indication that Ajman Moniscione is the next link in this very strong chain of sires. Having said that, there are quite a few other Psyche sons that need mentioning. First and foremost of course Enzo, bred in 1999 by Dr. Philip del Pozzo and Brent Stone, who was perhaps the most like his sire of all Psyche sons. He sadly died in 2016, but has left a rich legacy of his own that includes the multiple champion Eden C, Polish National Champion Albano, and Michalow Stud’s fabulous young sire El Omari. There’s also Psymadre, bred by Kenneth and Donna Topp, foaled the same year as Magnum Psyche and himself a successful show horse and sire. And not to forget the Psyche daughters that have done their sire proud. Special mention here must go to NW Siena Psyche, bred by Ruth and Michael Doe, who is the dam of Barzan Al Shahania, and OFW Psylhouette, bred by Harold and Dolly Orr, dam of the reigning All Nations Cup and World Gold Champion, EKS Alihandro, who is also emerging as a sire to be reckoned with. One thing that emerges very clearly even from this brief overview is that Padrons Psyche is a sire who works well with mares from a broad spectrum of different backgrounds, including Spanish, Polish, Russian, straight Egyptian, and mixed American bloodlines — an all-purpose sire who has something to offer for nearly everyone. And then there is Europe. Though bred in the U.S., Padrons Psyche is an all-European horse, and he was popular in Europe almost from the start. As mentioned above, the first of his get arrived there very early

in his career. Padrons Immage was another early import and probably the first Psyche son in Europe, but he never became fashionable and was sold to Saudi Arabia, where he died all too soon in 2009. The horse that really got the ball rolling was Psytadel, a 1998 bay stallion bred by Bob Boggs. Imported as a yearling by James Swaenepoel of Belgium, who still owns him today, Psytadel was a successful show colt and soon became one of the most popular European sires. His influence throughout Europe has been tremendous, beginning with the very typey, if sadly short-lived ANC and World Reserve Champion El Amin, and no end in sight. His sons include two British National Champion Stallions, Final Shadow and Psy Dream, of which the latter is himself a sire and grandsire of British National winners; Monarcos DD, sire at the Royal Jordanian Stud; the successful international sire Psyrasic, bred by Gestüt Osterhof in Germany and standing in Italy; and of course Al Zobair Stud’s SMA Magic One, who is emerging as a sire to be reckoned with. Psytadel sons have also been very successful under saddle, including the German-bred Patros HB in Britain, and Psymply Red DD in Belgium; and the Psytadel son H Tobago, more than a little reminiscent of his grandsire Padrons Psyche in appearance, is a popular sire with sports horse breeders in Britain. Thanks to shipped semen, some European breeders also bred their own Psyche foals. Two notable stallions were bred by Hans Trummer in Austria, Psyches Ambassador and Psynergy, both out of straight Russian mares. The aptly-named Ambassador has been successful at national and international shows, while Psynergy, owned by Bychan Arabians, is a major sire in Britain, both of halter and ridden winners. The mare Psayada Bint Psyche, bred by J. Scholes in Britain out of the wonderful Polish mare Zaneta, is

And not to forget, the Polish state studs, while not using Psyche himself, availed themselves of the services of his son Enzo and grandson Eden C with quite spectacular results. In time Psyche became such a celebrity he was on one occasion flown to Europe just for a special presentation. Given all this, perhaps it was inevitable that one day, he would come to Europe for good. In 2009, Psyche changed hands for the last time as he was sold to Paul Gheysens, who was just starting Knocke

Arabians in Belgium. Initially he stood at Jadem Arabians, where many visitors came to see the grand old horse in person. However, a second stud career in Europe was not to be. Not long after coming over, Psyche suffered a bad colic that required extensive surgery. Fortunately, he pulled through and made a full recovery, but he was subsequently retired from breeding. For the last half-dozen years or so, he has enjoyed a quiet life of retirement at Schoukens Training Centre with his two Shetland pony companions. “He is a very special individual,” says Monika Dobrun, who looked after him for the last five years, about “Grandpa,” as he is affectionately known. “One of the smartest I have had the pleasure to meet in my life. He is highly intelligent and gentle to those he loves, he can be goofy and playful, and sometimes he can be angry and wants to be left alone, just like every old guy! But his moods don’t last very long. Mostly, if you turn around and pretend that you’re leaving, he soon shows his kind face and gives you a ‘come and cuddle me’-look.” At age 29, Psyche is in great shape and still enjoys showing off for visitors. After all, retired or not, he is the resident celebrity! “He loves when people look at him,” says Monika. “Then he puts on his macho look and tries to scare everyone with showing he can still roar like a lion and strikes with his front leg, even if it doesn’t go so high anymore. He likes to look at the sky,” she adds, “looking at planes, birds and I don’t know what else. Sometimes he just stares at the sky with those beautiful black eyes. Maybe he sees something I don’t. …” One thing is certain: this stallion has nothing more to prove. He has more than earned his retirement and plenty of TLC. He is now a gentleman of leisure, who from time to time consents to welcome admiring visitors to his presence. May he enjoy it for many years to come!

a conversation with bob and Dixie north by Denise Hearst When you purchased Padrons Psyche in 2000, he was already an established sire of national and international champions. Other than this, what attracted you to him and made you want to own him? Was there anything specific you felt he would contribute to your own breeding program? Our breeding program in January 2000 was relatively small and transitioning from “pure Polish” to a program focused on breeding horses that were “pretty” as well as athletic. We felt that Psyche was the perfect stallion to help us accomplish this new breeding goal. He had already demonstrated his ability to sire extreme type and charisma, and still maintain good size, structure, and movement. He also was also known for his ability to sire beautiful small, well-set tippy ears. From speculation to fact — what did he contribute? Among the foals he sired for you, which would you say is the best, and why? In what way, and how strongly, have he and his offspring influenced your own breeding program? Psyche has sired hundreds of national champions all over the world. He was universally recognized as one of the all-time leading sires in the modern Arabian’s history. What is interesting in his legacy, is that the Arabian industry has moved from the popularity of his most famous sons (such as Magnum Psyche, Enzo, Psytadel, Mostly Padron, etc.) to the general recognition that his daughters are perhaps his biggest legacy. Today, they are sought after as broodmares that are producing outstanding show horses with many different stallions. Like everyone else, our best producing broodmares are Psyche daughters. We have discovered that they can cross with a large
variety of bloodlines successfully. Psyche’s get produce good minds for halter and also excel in performance. As the Psyche offspring mature, they have many ways to go as they continue to achieve championships in both halter and performance. In his career, Padrons Psyche has sired successful horses from mares of highly varied backgrounds, including Egyptian and Spanish. Do you feel that he nicked better with certain lines than with others? Is there a “golden cross?” Is there anything that didn’t work at all? Psyche did cross with most bloodlines, of note though, he crossed extremely well with the Bey Shah lines. But there were many breeding age Bey Shah daughters when Psyche was in his prime. These mares crossed with Psyche produced many national champion offspring. Unfortunately, only a few Egyptian mares were bred to him but the results were quite good. Two of the most successful combinations — both represented in the North Arabians broodmare band — are with mares of Russian and of Bey Shah breeding. What distinguishes these crosses in your opinion? Given his own background, the combination with Russian lines is self-evident, but what is it that makes the cross with Bey Shah work so well? The Bey Shah mares tended to need more type as the industry moved away from the pure Polish concept. In general, the Bey Shah mares had great structure and good movement but needed better heads and ears, but we did not want to degrade the body, neck, and movement of these mares. Psyche also had great structure (body and neck) and excellent movement but he also sired improved type, head, and ears, in his offspring. Therefore, the Bey Shah

worthy of him. We learned that you have to have good mares if you want good foals, even with a super sire like Psyche. The foals are more than 60 percent of their dam, so start with the best ones you can find.
What sires do you find cross the best with Psyche daughters? How many Psyche daughters and granddaughters do you have? We have lost several of our good Psyche daughters over the years, and two are now out of production. However, we still have three outstanding producing Psyche mares who continue to produce some of our best foals every year. More recently, we have been breeding a few of our Falcon-bred mares to Psyche in an attempt to get a couple of new young Psyche mares for our breeding program. The Psyche mares seem to produce with a variety of bloodlines (including our two current stallions, Ever After NA and Grand Commandd).
Any regrets about matings not tried? Anything you wish you could “do over” with Psyche? Any surprises? We bred almost all of our mares to Psyche when we had him here. The only do over would be not to have sold a few of those great mares by him. The surprise is still seeing Psyche in the pedigrees of the major show winners who are his grandget and great-grandget! His legacy continues to this day and it makes us so proud to have been part of his life.
Compared to many of today’s prominent champions, Psyche is a very complete horse, with a body and legs and unusual size, as well as type. Since he looks like he would make a good riding horse — has he ever been under saddle? Psyche has been ridden casually, but none of his previous owners ever promoted him in performance, nor did we. It was a shame, as he did sire so many champion western and hunt horses, and even cow horses, costume, and English horses. What, on the basis of his lifetime achievement, would you say is Psyche’s greatest contribution to the breed as a whole, and for what reason? What will, or should, he be remembered for? I think Psyche changed the look of the show horse. His legacy is based on a number of factors. In the 1990s and 2000s, he sired type and beauty, as well as great necks/bodies and movement. Also when his first get hit the showring the Padron “chestnut” was “in.” He will always be remembered for his overwhelming presence and his contribution to the breed via his impressive number of champions. What is the best lesson about breeding Arabian horses that you learned from Psyche? Psyche was such an icon, that we had to purchase some additional mares
What, for you personally, are the stand-out moments in your years with Psyche? Seeing people’s reaction to their first in-person introduction to Psyche; they would get tears in their eyes. He always caused huge emotions in people. Over the years at our farm, I never saw him come out of his stall when I did not get tears of joy at just seeing him. It was like being in the presence of greatness. When you walk through your pastures, where do you “see” Psyche? One of our best Psyche daughters has produced very well with Ever After NA, but previously all of her foals were bay. This year, she had a chestnut colt. And there he was! So Psyche looking! I never pass the foal’s stall or pasture without feeling Psyche’s presence. Final thoughts from Dixie on our life with Psyche: When we bought Psyche, we had to buy a farm worthy of him, and build a barn for him. The night he arrived at our new farm, all alone in a 15-horse trailer, he stood at the top of the ramp surveying his new home. It was an unbelievable sight, my heart just swelled. He was so magnificent and then, he just walked down the ramp to his stall like he owned the place! I spent the night in the barn, and at 3:00 a.m., I was convinced he was experiencing colic, as he walked around the stall and never put his tail down, even when eating. I called the vet immediately, but upon examination he was fine. This is how I learned that it was just “Psyche” and his fantastic tail carriage (which he passed on).

I am very enthusiastic about the Arabian horse. When I began breeding 25 years ago, I had a vision of creating a
breeding operation of the highest quality. I am honored to have achieved recognition as a top breeder and Haras JM has earned the title of ‘The Best of Brazil’ for ten consecutive years from 2004 to 2013. For years Style SRA (Bey Shah x Sociallite) was the main sire of Haras JM. Style was truly unforgettable; we knew it
would be a huge task to fill that void upon his passing. Having always admired the blood of Padrons Psyche, a unique opportunity became available to purchase Pscore, one of
his greatest sons. He came from the notable breeding program established by Lucy Whittier at Las Colinas in California, and was owned by our dear friends Robert and Dixie North of North Arabians.

It was a blessing to have such a special horse offered to us, we were extremely grateful to Robert and Dixie. The traits we liked in Pscore are those clearly passed down by his great sire Padrons Psyche. The amazing charisma, type, refinement, overall balance, and of course what is very important to the Haras JM program is the incredible movement. We want our horses to be form to function. We love that Pscore carries so many wonderful qualities from his sire but it is also his dam that drew us to him. Pscore is out of the iconic mare Bey Shahs Lady (Bey Shah x Elegance Of Taask). She is also the dam of Pstrategy (full brother to Pscore) and Bey Ambition (sired by Regal Actor JP). The cross of this beautiful mare with all that Psyche offers is another attribute that makes Pscore even more special.

We brought Pscore home to our farm in Brazil and he rapidly became our main herd stallion and covered most of the mares. We started crossing him on different lines such as our Style SRA daughters, and to some of our Ali Jamaal and El Shaklan-bred mares. The resulting progeny did not disappoint. An excellent verification of the transmitted phenotype and overall qualities of Pscore (and that of Padrons Psyche), is in his Brazilian Reserve National Champion daughter Venittia D’ Pscore JM (x Michelle Carol). This is just one example of his many championship progeny we have produced. Pscore was also well received by other major Brazilian breeding farms, making him the number one Padrons Psyche son in the countries of Latin America. His progeny have sold well at auction and by private sales, demonstrating the demand for his offspring. Pscore is also known outside of Brazil, with daughters purchased on an international level. Pscore has enhanced the already beautiful traits of our broodmare band. It is also very exciting for us to see what phenomenal producers the Pscore daughters are becoming. This is the ultimate goal of any breeder. We could not be happier with Pscore’s production and influence as a superb sire.

Padrons Psyche’s influence entered, embellished, and influenced my breeding program in 2009, and encouraged me to continue as a breeder, while still struggling after the loss of my son and partner. While looking for a colt to please my eye, the most amazing thing happened: sight unseen Psax (Padrons Psyche x Bey Shahs Lady) entered my life. I did not have many years of experience, but had always been able to note the physical perfection and beauty of the stallions we had owned. They all had fine personalities, but here comes Psax with such a perfect body and suddenly a personality I had not experienced before. I had purchased him for his bloodlines and because of Lucy Whittier’s excellent breeding reputation! He’s a full brother to Pscore and Pstrategy, and half-brother to Bey Ambition, all of Lucy Whittier breeding. We bred him as a two-year-old and he sired eight beautiful and excellent foals that first year, and I became a “Small Breeder.” His Half-Arabian daughter Psax Fifth Avenue (x Beautiful Legacy by Baske Afire), owned and shown by Lori Hart, dashed to two unanimous championships as a three-year-old at the 2014 U. S. Nationals in Half-Arabian Hunter Futurity and AOTR. She repeated this feat in 2015 and 2016. She did the same at Scottsdale and AHA Regionals. Her full brother Psax Afire (Psax x Beautiful Legacy), owned by Samantha Hilliard, is following in her footsteps. Others, like Blacksands (Psax x Psymply Magic), Symply Psaxon (Psax x Psymply Magic), Casanova Cowboy DCA (Psax x Psymply Magic), and Aladdinn Of Psax (Psax x Aamelia), have been successful as well. In 2016, AHA Sweepstakes earnings were awarded me for eight Regional Championships and one U.S. National Championship earned by get of Psax. Padrons Psyche’s influence through his son Psax gives “Big Breeder” accomplishments to a small breeder like me. Califchromeofpsax (Psax x Gracious Dream Tone) was purchased by U.S. and Chilean veterinarian Dr. Lori Dir, who plans to improve the Arabians in Chile with the Padrons Psyche influence, look, and personality. His owner says it best, “Friendliness has endeared him to everybody.” The art of breeding with the Padrons Psyche influence has just resulted in my Half-Arabian mare Beautiful Legacy’s birth of a new winner for someone. A joy of being a breeder is to greet the new foals, some who immediately look at you, cock their ears and give you a whinny or a nicker.

I feel very honored to own two incredible Padrons Psyche sons. After 10 years of breeding and constantly wanting
to improve my broodmare band of world-class mares, I decided that I needed a Padrons Psyche daughter to complete my broodmare band. I purchased a breeding to Padrons Psyche before his book closed to the public and bred him to the best mare I had, WC Ciao Bella, who’s earned a Legion of Supreme Honor. With much anticipation for this foal, I was not disappointed! This foal was incredible! Short dishy head, four perfect white socks, tippiest little ears I had ever seen, shortbacked and a great mover. One little glitch — it was a boy! But a great one, WC Ciao Psyche, who I hope will carry on the famous lineage that he represents. The other Padrons Psyche son that I own now, PF Psymply Psyche (x Skarlett Silk), was not planned, but he also brings
an impeccable pedigree to my breeding program that will be seen in the showring for many years to come. He possesses many of the wonderful Psyche traits with his incredible tippy ears, wonderful jowl, excellent bone and lots of chrome! That ‘Psyche look’ has added that extra special touch that I wanted for my breeding program.

The global dissemination of Padrons Psyche bloodlines has proven him a sire of utmost refinement and unwavering
consistency. His sons and daughters, now in their fourth generation, echo classic Arabians of the past. No question, Padrons Psyche has had a profound impact upon the contemporary Arabian horse, blending beautifully into Arabians of Spanish, Egyptian, and Polish descent. His blood runs strongly through the pedigrees of all my horses, including a rare and spectacular WH York daughter, Brooklyn CF, out of the exceptional Padrons Psyche daughter, Bint Alianna, now in Belgium. I feel fortunate to have captured her bloodlines before exportation. Brooklyn CF is one of the most beautiful, feminine mares in my experience. She’s produced an outstanding Spitfyre VF filly and recently foaled a Vitorio TO filly for Ken Schuessler. Years ago, we successfully campaigned the exciting and very memorable mare, Alada Psynergy VF (Psymadre x Alada
Fortune), a highly competitive halter champion as well as a powerful performance champion. Her three-quarter sister, Tapestry VF (Psymadre x Lads Tawny), has given us three outstanding foals, most recently a filly by Canadian, U.S., Scottsdale, and World Cup Champion Spitfyre VF (TF Psymreekhe x *Red Flame BRSB). The very definition of class, elegance, and style, this filly promises to be a showstopper. Tapestry has been bred back to Spitfyre for a 2018 foal. Currently, we see a rising star in our exquisite young stallion Skyefall (Skyehawkk x Tapestry VF). His first foal out of a lovely Valley Oaks Enzo granddaughter has arrived as we go to press. The result is a colt of refined lines and distinct characteristics that reflect his stellar pedigree. Athleticism is endemic in all my Padrons Psyche descendants and brilliance is no small part of the equation. Recently, a respected breeder was asked why Skyefall resonates. She answered, “he just does.” There’s an elusive quality that must be seen to be believed. Skyefall has it. He just does.
