Breakthroughs in Equine Genetic Research Does Your Arabian Horse Have
Laminitis? Has your veterinarian mentioned metabolic syndrome?
Above: AHDC Medical technologist Veldina Camo works with the MagMAX Express 96, an automated method for extracting DNA Right: Dr. Samantha Brooks
Cornell’s Animal Health Diagnostic Center is now offering a genetic test for
Lavender Foal Syndrome The Brooks Equine Genetics Lab Cornell University Department of Animal Science
The Brooks Equine Genetics Lab needs your help! Dr. Samantha Brooks is currently conducting a study to investigate the genetic risks for some forms of laminitis. As part of the Animal Science department at Cornell University, it is the mission of our research group to use cutting-edge genomic technologies to provide valuable tools for improving horse health. We can’t accomplish this mission alone! If you have an Arabian horse who has had laminitis please consider participating in our project. DNA samples are simple to submit. For more information visit us on the web, http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/ brooks or email: equinegenetics@cornell.edu. Research like this pays immediate dividends, especially when it leads to genetic testing that may help to eliminate life-stealing conditions from your breeding stock.
Lavender Foal Syndrome is an often-misdiagnosed and fatal inherited disease of Arabian horses and their descendants. Last spring, Dr. Brooks and Dr. Douglas Antczak of the Baker Institute for Animal Health at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine, identified the genetic mutation that causes LFS and developed a method to test for carriers of LFS and diagnose LFS affected foals. This test will enable breeders to avoid carrier-to-carrier matings that can produce LFS foals. Cornell AHDC is the only AAVLD accredited laborator y of fering the LFS test. For more information on the test, visit http://ahdc.vet.cornell. edu/news/lfs.cfm or call 607.253.3900.
