Once again, Arabian Horse World presents our annual Stud book research feature in which we take a look at the numbers of new registrations, transfers of ownership, and the stallions being used by today’s breeders. We also present the all-time leading sires, the leading sires of previous Stud Book Volumes, and the top 10 breeders of Arabians by registered foals. Volume 90, in essence, represents for registrations for the year 2018. Of course, there will be late registrations trickling in but over the years we have tried to maintain the same cut off date for our research. The charts on the following pages speak for themselves. The numbers of new registrations continue a decades-long decline after a slight uptick in 2017. In 2018 a new leading sire achieved the number one position — Afires Heir (Afire Bey V x Brassmis), owned by William and Shirley Reilich. He won the U.S. National Champion English Pleasure Junior Horse title in 2007 and then went on to win the open title for the next three years straight. He has sired 29 National Champions over his lifetime. “We’ve been breeding for 40-plus years and have always relied on people who know what they’re doing rather than reinventing the wheel,” says owner Bill Reilich. “Afires Heir is a great stallion who sires beautiful athletic foals. A four-time English pleasure unanimous champion at U.S. Nationals with Joel Kiesner, he consistently appears in the leading sire rankings. Under Joel’s superior management, Afires Heir continues strong in the breeding barn.” *Equator (QR Marc x Eklipyka) has moved into second place. Bred and owned by Michalow Stud, Poland, he was leased by Aljassimya Stud, as was *Al Ayal AA (Al Ayad x The Vision HG), who tied for fourth place with Ever After NA. Also holding steady within the top four slots is *Baha AA (Al Ayad x Baraaqa AA).
We asked Aljassimya manager, Bart Van Buggenhout, to share his thoughts on the two stallions. “Equator’s foal crop was of good quality and athletic ability,” he says. “Our main goal was to add his beautiful Polish ‘E’ line to the breeding program, by using him; we succeeded in that already. His foals are generally well-built and typey with good show attitude. I do feel they are growing up into fine horses. The oldest now are two and a half, and some of them have been sent out to be trained under saddle. A few more will be seen in halter soon. “*Al Ayal AA has been without question the most consistent of the sires we have used. He is very dominant in reproducing his type and exotic face, good shoulder and chest and good hindquarters. His fillies are especially interesting for the future breeding program of Aljassimya Farm. The oldest ones are now in foal, and we are excited to see where they will bring us.” As for Aljassimya’s status as the top breeder of registered Arabians in terms of numbers, Bart has many thoughts on the subject ... from what those numbers mean, to where we are going. “Aljassimya’s breeding power is changing now, Bart says. “It started by bringing in top sires used on a large group of mares, but over the years some mares made it clear they were the exceptional producers. These mares are now creating families, and the smaller families are slowly disappearing. This brings a better consistency — comparing our success rate at the start, we have grown tremendously. I foresaw that setting up a breeding program would take 10 years, but with larger numbers and the use of embryo transfer, we have gained time and are achieving the goals a few years early. Soon the time will come when we don’t need to think about building, but about detailing and finishing the product, it’s exciting and evermore a huge learning curve. “As the numbers of foals in America go down each year, I think it opens up space for large breeders to bring forward a certain style and look for the breed,

as Gainy or Ansata were well known for (as well as many others). I also think it gives us a better chance to cross over and compete in halter, as well as ridden classes, as we have proven successfully for the last three years. “With breeding large numbers to register, many breeders specialize in one particular aspect of Arabian sport, and this means that our Arabian horses are starting to look very different from each other. They do that because it’s commercially viable, but I think this is changing now again. Compare a short distance racehorse with a halter horse with an English pleasure horse! In the end this difference should not have been — an Arabian horse is an Arabian horse and should be good looking, as well as have the athletic ability to perform. I feel with smaller registered numbers this might, with time, bring us back a little closer to that unity of one

Arabian horse, if set forth by the right breeders. “We do need to keep a few big breeders who have the funds to create diversity and try things smaller breeders could not afford to do. If only small breeders survive then you can see they all tend to go in a similar direction of what’s well promoted and advertised at that moment in time. The biggest problem for the future will be to maintain a healthy gene pool and the diversity within it. I do think it would be great time to cancel all frozen and shipped semen so young colts are given a chance locally, and in this way our diversity would survive, as well as a higher average value for the colts. I see so many beautiful colts being gelded because they don’t stand a chance in the market, and this suggests that we are doing certain things that will not secure our breed’s genetic future.”
