Al Shaqab — The New Generation

The new generation

The new generation by Mohammed Al Sulaiti

I

think every breeder can relate to that feeling of anticipation throughout a mare’s pregnancy. Certainly, at Al Shaqab, it doesn’t matter how many foals we breed — that anticipation, the excitement, it never diminishes. The news of every birth spreads with instant enthusiasm. It’s prioritized above any show result, any guest, nearly every other activity. Our immediate priority shifts, we all want to see and know about the new foal. We are eager for answers to the all-important questions, is the foal healthy and well, what’s its gender, has the mating met our expectations, is this the foal we’ve been dreaming of? At Al Shaqab, we are dedicated to breeding and while the perfect Arabian horse does not and may not ever exist, we are committed to preserving the breed standard at the highest level possible. And, perhaps, this is why we are frequently asked the question, “Which Al Shaqab stallion should I breed my mare to?” We want to be of assistance and I suspect the reasoning for this question is based on the idea that there might be a secret answer. But with no perfectly conformed horse we believe there is no perfect breeding decision — that there is no secret to breeding the horse of our dreams.

KAHIL AL SHAQAB

But that will not deter us from trying to breed the horse of our dreams. We begin with the Arabian horse standard of excellence. The standard is defined and we make every breeding decision with the intention to produce a horse as close to the standard as possible. However, the standard is limited to the description of conformation. The standard does not enable a breeder to know whether the horses being mated are capable of reproducing their most ideal conformational traits, whether the horses can reproduce their quality and whether they can reproduce either or both their quality and ideal conformational traits with consistency. The intention behind every breeding decision and every purchase (Al Shaqab regularly purchases and also acquires horses, via our stallion leasing program, to incorporate into the breeding program) is to achieve our goal. The goal is to preserve the Arabian breed at its highest level and in doing so we aim to make a positive and lasting contribution to the future of Al Shaqab’s breeding program and the Arabian horse breed. To that end, we will not discriminate against any bloodline or any horse. If a stallion owned by someone other than Al Shaqab can meet our needs, we will use him and show results will have no influence upon our breeding decisions. This position, coupled with the contributions of Al Adeed Al Shaqab, Gazal Al Shaqab, and Marwan Al Shaqab, a purposeful focus on the future of our breeding program along with the support of our Chairman, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Thani, has enabled us to produce a new generation of Al Shaqab breeding horses. On the following pages we present the families of this new generation, families that are proving capable of consistently reproducing their most ideal conformational traits and quality.

HARIRY AL SHAQAB (Marwan Al Shaqab x White Silkk), 2010 stallion.

2 ▪ AL SHAQAB ▪ WORLD

David Boggs once told me, “I predict Hariry will be one of the all-time great Arabian sires in history.” For Al Shaqab, Hariry Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x White Silkk), 2010 stallion, is among the leading successors to Marwan. But Hariry represents even more than the status of successor. By our assessment Hariry is truly unique; he is one of those rare individuals who equates to greater than the sum of his parents. Hariry has inherited the very best characteristics of his entire pedigree, a pedigree that is comprised of the breed’s most highly accomplished breeding and show horses. Hariry was named U.S. National Champion Colt twice, along with Scottsdale and Arabian Breeders World Cup Champion, confirming his ideal conformation and quality. With the arrival of his 2014 foal crop, Hariry has proven that he can consistently reproduce his conformation and quality, a trait that makes him a reliable and valuable breeding stallion, in our program at least — and has made a positive first step toward becoming one of the greatest Arabian sires in history.

To equal the merit of our most accomplished breeding mares, arguably Kajora, the dam of Gazal Al Shaqab, Little Liza Fame, the dam of Marwan Al Shaqab, and Sundar Alisayyah, the dam of Al Adeed Al Shaqab and Hadban Al Shaqab, is a significant credit by our evaluation. But having produced two World Champion sons, both full siblings, another son and full sibling that exhibits equal promise, Kenz Al Shaqab, and possibly the best Al Shaqab-bred Marwan daughter to date (an unnamed 2014 filly), OFW Mishaahl (Mishaah x OFW Balarina), 2002 mare, can be counted among Al Shaqab’s best breeding mares and with grandchildren beginning to make their mark, she is, perhaps, the most significant contributor to the new generation.

KAHIL AL SHAQAB (Marwan Al Shaqab x OFW Mishaahl), 2008 stallion.

As the eldest son, Kahil Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x OFW Mishaahl), 2008 stallion, was the pioneer in proving his mother’s potential and that he and his family were worthy for inclusion into the Al Shaqab breeding program. And prove it he did. He went undefeated in 2011 at Al Khalediah, Menton, and then Paris where he was named class winner with a staggering eight points above the second-place competitor, Best Head and Gold Champion! The year 2011 also saw the leasing of Kahil to the world-renowned Polish State Stud of Janow Podlaski and upon his arrival in Poland that December, Michalow also procured forty breedings. Kahil was only three and a half years old and had sired just six foals! In 2013 and from his first foal crop Kahil had sired the World Champion Yearling Filly Minwah (x LC Primavera by Padrons Psyche), bred by myself and owned and shown by Aljassimya Stud, along with Al Khalediah Gold Champion Yearling Colt and Filly, Menton Gold Champion Yearling and West Coast Cup Silver Champion, all at their first shows. And 2014 marked the first exhibition of the Polish-bred foals. His son Morion (x Mesalina by Ekstern) and daughter Al Jazeera (x Alhasa by Ganges) were both named 2014 Polish National Junior Champion respectively. In addition to the consistent production of quality and his overall look, Kahil can be relied upon to sire his trademark charisma — charm, presence, personality. From near or far his offspring are immediately identifiable by their flamboyant carriage, flagging tails, and that much-prized blow-and-snort “WOW” factor. Of the eight Kahil daughters that have been retained thus far, the eldest will enter the breeding program next year.

Following Kahil’s accomplishments and having captured for himself the title of 2012 Gold World Champion Colt, the public embraced Wadee Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x OFW Mishaahl), 2010 stallion, and he bred a great number of mares in 2013. We also had high expectations of Wadee’s breeding ability. We’ve observed that he breeds his own look, his special type of elegance and prettiness that’s most commonly associated with his sire line. From the first ten Al Shaqab-bred foals born in 2014, Wadee has confirmed his role among the new generation of Al Shaqab breeding horses. The 2014 filly (Wadee Al Shaqab x Magheeda Al Shaqab).

Johara Al Shaqab (Imperial Mahzeer x Sahaba), 1998 straight Egyptian mare, has singlehandedly founded a dynasty that now reaches far beyond the border of Qatar. Johara’s firstborn daughter, Amwaj Al Shaqab (by Safir [Salaa El Dine x Aisha]), is a Qatar International Straight Egyptian Gold Champion Mare and the dam of two producing daughters, the full sisters Wijdan Al Shaqab (by Al Adeed Al Shaqab) and Amina Al Shaqab, the 2014 Egyptian Event Gold Champion Mare. Johara’s firstborn son, Farhoud Al Shaqab (by Al Adeed Al Shaqab), has emerged as one of the leading breeding stallions at Al Shaqab with just four foal crops and a limited number of offspring. The Ansata Nile Echo daughters, a 2014 filly from Amina Al Shaqab and Jaziah Al Shaqab (x Johara Al Shaqab), represent a younger generation of Johara’s descendants that are set to make their mark, both as show and breeding horses.

BARIQ AL SHAQAB (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Wahayeb Al Shaqab), 2011 straight Egyptian colt.

Wahayeb Al Shaqab (Ansata Selman x Johara Al Shaqab), like her dam and maternal sister Amwaj, has also proven to be a consistent producer of ideally conformed quality offspring. Her son, Bariq Al Shaqab (by Al Adeed Al Shaqab) has been twice named Qatar International Straight Egyptian Gold Champion Colt and Berlin Cup Gold Champion Colt. Despite his quality and conformation, Bariq, like many of his immediate relatives, has been slow to mature. However, he was noteworthy from birth: his extraordinary head type, Al Adeed style conformation, abundant athleticism and carriage have always been apparent and we expect he will sire these highly desirable traits with consistency. The first Bariq foals will be born in 2015.

FARHOUD AL SHAQAB (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Johara Al Shaqab), 2008 straight Egyptian stallion.

The birth of Farhoud Al Shaqab (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Johara Al Shaqab), 2008 straight Egyptian stallion, has enabled us to extend the influence of Johara throughout the Al Shaqab breeding program with glorious success. Farhoud was the 2010 Egyptian Event Champion Colt and Supreme Male and has since established himself among the leading breeding stallions at Al Shaqab. Of all the Al Shaqab stallions Farhoud is the most reliable for consistently siring his extreme head type. Farhoud will also contribute his conformation and look, a look heavily influenced by his dam Johara Al Shaqab. And this look and type have produced a collection of accomplished show horses at prestigious shows around the world. This year alone Fayyad Al Shaqab (x Ghalia Al Shaqab by Marwan Al Shaqab) was awarded PSAIAHF Gold Champion Yearling Colt; Victoria Al Shaqab (x Victoria II HPS by RSD Dark Victory) was named Arabian Breeders World Cup Silver Champion Yearling Filly; and Tibrah Al Shaqab (x Twom Hiddiyya by Imperial Pharaj) was presented with the Egyptian Event Gold Champion Filly award.

FADI AL SHAQAB (Besson Carol x Abha Myra), 2008 stallion.

16 ▪ AL SHAQAB ▪ WORLD

Fadi Al Shaqab (Besson Carol x Abha Myra), 2008 stallion, is an attractive package, hard to fault and hard to resist on every account. We consider him to be almost perfect, an evaluation reinforced by a stellar show record that culminated with the title of 2013 Gold World Champion Stallion. But beyond the outer layers of appearance and accomplishment, Fadi represents a far more significant and deeper value: he is the son of a Marwan Al Shaqab daughter. Within the Al Shaqab breeding program we have made an invaluable observation of the Marwan daughters and their production: that they, despite their varying differences, are like their sire in that they, too, possess Marwan’s unique ability to consistently reproduce their most desirable characteristics, along with that Marwan quality. Further, from our observation of these first few Fadi foal crops, he, too, has inherited this most impressive and valuable trait. And while Fadi and Marwan consistently sire differing conformational characteristics in the extreme, they nonetheless share this most desirable ability, an ability that has set Marwan apart and established his title as one of the most influential breeding stallions of recent history. These observations have led us to suspect that Fadi, too, could fulfill such a role and perhaps in time take a place of equal merit to that of Marwan’s breeding contribution.

17 ▪ AL SHAQAB ▪ WORLD

As is the case with many Marwan offspring, Abha Myra (Marwan Al Shaqab x ZT Ludjkalba), 2003 mare, is in many ways her father’s daughter. This fact is reinforced by an admirable show record that places Abha Myra among Marwan’s most accomplished offspring; U.S. National Reserve Champion (behind the Gazal Al Shaqab daughter and living legend Pianissima), Scottsdale Champion, All Nations Cup Reserve Champion, and Sharjah Reserve Champion. Today, Abha Myra is retired from the showring and has taken her place as a broodmare at Al Shaqab. Her production has been limited to date and consists of colts only thus far. However, all of her foals have been noteworthy for their above-average quality. In addition to Fadi Al Shaqab, a younger son by Thee Desperado (The Minstril x AK Amiri Asmarr), Hakeem Al Shaqab, 2011 stallion, has also been retained for breeding and showing. We bred to Thee Desperado, the renowned straight Egyptian Scottsdale Champion and U.S. National Reserve Champion stallion, late in his life and Hakeem is the much-wanted son we had hoped for.

ABHA MYRA

(Marwan Al Shaqab x ZT Ludjkalba), 2003 mare.

Hakeem bred his first mares at Al Shaqab this season and has been leased until 2016 to the Rach Stud of Brazil. Established nearly thirty-five years ago, we appreciate Rach Stud for their initial acquisition of superb Polish-bred stock from the United States and Poland and the subsequent generations they have perpetuated from their group of foundation horses, today reflecting an impressive overall consistency of quality, type, and conformation. For this reason we couldn’t be more pleased by this opportunity to cooperate and honestly I feel that just like breeding Anaza El Farid to Kajora, the introduction of Hakeem at Rach Stud will present both of us with an important step forward. So, despite the difference in color, the influence of Abha Myra is apparent when considering both Fadi and Hakeem’s phenotype, and more so when assessing the Fadi foals born at Al Shaqab. For us, it is impossible to dismiss the consistent and significant influence from Abha Myra. To see the Fadi foals moving at liberty, their athleticism, carriage, and attitude, regardless of color or dam line, the influence of Abha Myra is apparent, giving us much confidence that Hakeem, too, will emerge as a sire of significance and provide a lasting and valuable contribution.

LEBINON AL SHAQAB (Alidaar x Lamia Al Shaqab), 2010 straight Egyptian stallion.

Ansata Halim Shah (Ansata Ibn Halima x Ansata Rosetta) was purchased by Al Shaqab in 1994. Sadly he passed away in 1995 and the descendants from his last foal crop continue to represent great value throughout the breeding program. Of all the Ansata Halim Shah daughters born in that last crop, it is the contribution of the prolific 1995-2009 straight Egyptian mare Aliah Al Shaqab’s (Ansata Halim Shah x Imprial Impharida) daughters that have brought this family to the forefront, primarily through Aliah’s straight Egyptian grandsons, Jadaan Al Shaqab (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Torfa Al Shaqab) and Lebinon Al Shaqab (Alidaar x Lamia Al Shaqab). Lebinon Al Shaqab, a 2010 straight Egyptian stallion, is special in that just like Aliah Al Shaqab he, too, is from the last foal crop of his sire Alidaar (Shaikh Al Badi x Bint Magidaa) and we are looking to Lebinon to further distribute the qualities he inherited from Alidaar, Aliah, and their renowned ancestors: sound conformation and athleticism, length of leg, pigment, head type and large black eyes, throughout the straight Egyptian breeding program. Lebinon has been leased by and stands at stud with Rancho Bulakenyo of Los Osos, California. Lebinon proved to be in great demand during his first season at stud and with a significant quantity of his book already sold for the 2015 breeding season we are anticipating a good number of exciting foals. Lebinon has also bred the best mares at Rancho Bulakenyo and a significant group of Al Shaqab mares located in the United States and Qatar.

As a grandson of Aliah Al Shaqab (Ansata Halim Shah x Imprial Impharida), through his dam, Torfa Al Shaqab (by Al Adeed Al Shaqab), and having been named the 2011 Qatar International Straight Egyptian Gold Champion Stallion at his first and only show, it was inevitable that Jadaan Al Shaqab (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Torfa Al Shaqab), 2006 straight Egyptian stallion, would become a valued sire. Aliah Al Shaqab passed along her large black eyes and pigment and coupled with Al Adeed, Jadaan inherited their smooth bodies and level toplines along with correct lay of shoulder and set of neck, conformation that has manifested in bold athletic motion, while multiple lines to Ansata Halim Shah guaranteed that exotic, extreme head type. Jadaan is leased by and stands with Forest Hill Stud, Australia. Through this lease Jadaan has proven his ability to consistently sire his ideal characteristics with a succession of foals born primarily at Forest Hill Stud. Today three Forest Hill-bred Jadaan daughters, Halimas Jasmine (x Halimas Fascination by Fayrid), Halimas Jadaan’s Dream (x Halimas Desert Temptation by Anaza El Nizr), and Halimas Jaddani (x Halimas Suddani by Royal Jamill) call Al Shaqab home and will enter the breeding program when they come of age.

AMIR AL SHAQAB (Gazal Al Shaqab x Amira Madrona), 2007 stallion.

24 ▪ AL SHAQAB ▪ WORLD

Since his birth it has been his type, his presence, and his quality that have set Amir Al Shaqab (Gazal Al Shaqab x Amira Madrona), 2007 stallion, apart and we’re flattered by the complimentary observation of many, that Amir evokes the essence of Ruminaja Ali, the legendary straight Egyptian, U.S. National Reserve Champion Stallion and international sire of significance. And while Ruminaja Ali is represented twice in Amir’s pedigree, other legends of the breed make up Amir’s genotype. Of course his sire Gazal Al Shaqab has been a terrific contributor. And his grandam Kajora, renowned for her extraordinary quality and for winning the title of U.S. National Champion Mare as a three-year-old in 1982. His grandsire Anaza El Farid (by Ruminaja Ali) and Farid’s overachieving dam Bint Deenaa (Ansata Ibn Halima x Deenaa) are revered for their almost flawless conformation and worldwide contribution to the straight Egyptian breeding community. Ali Jamaal (Ruminaja Ali x Heritage Memory) was a living legend famed for his unquestionable Arabian look and his consistent reproduction of that look, along with stallions of an earlier time, pioneers of the breed, including Muscat (Salon x Malpia), the 1980 Triple Crown Champion in the U.S. who traveled all the way from Russia and revolutionized breeding of that era, and Gai Parada (Ferzon x Azleta), born in 1969 and synonymous with the best even today.

Amir’s star-studded pedigree and its influence upon his phenotype is apparent when evaluating his offspring. From the largest number of foals bred by Al Shaqab and Peregrine Arabians of Lexington, Kentucky, we have monitored the progress of a high-quality group all featuring Amir’s length of leg and smooth, square structure, overall conformational correctness, and the natural athleticism that is relative to his ideal conformation. With the birth of Sultan Al Shaqab (Amir Al Shaqab x Abha Al Shaqab), 2011 stallion, Amir’s first foal, there is little doubt that Amir will contribute a lasting influence at Al Shaqab. Sultan was awarded Gold in Menton as a yearling, along with Silver at the European Championships and Bronze at the 2013 World Championships. Sultan bred his first mares in 2014.

From Brazil, to the United States, Europe, and then the Middle East, Miss El Power JQ (Power World JQ x Elkada Sahibi), 2007 mare, has drawn a mass of admirers and left her mark as an accomplished show horse — Brazilian National Champion, Scottsdale class winner, Menton Champion, and Dubai Gold Cup Champion. At Al Shaqab, the indication of a valued breeding mare is measured in part by her ability to produce high-quality sons, and with the production of three promising colts, Miss El Power JQ has established a prominent position for herself. In every sense of the word’s meaning, beautiful would best describe Miss El Power JQ — graceful, elegant, charming. And quality, from nose to toes. Miss El Power JQ radiates quality and it is that beauty and quality we wish to distribute throughout the Al Shaqab breeding program. While Hamdan Al Shaqab (by Gazal Al Shaqab) and a 2014 colt by Marwan Al Shaqab, along with her 2013 daughter, Al Anood Al Shaqab (by Kahil Al Shaqab), are earmarked for the future, it is Marsal Al Shaqab (by Marwan Al Shaqab), 2011 colt, to whom we are now looking to perpetuate the beauty and quality of Miss El Power JQ throughout the breeding program. As one of the most promising sons of Marwan and representing the best conformation of both his sire and dam, Marsal will finally enter the breeding program in 2015, and we have not been shy with the selection of his first mares. He will breed a distinguished group of our finest mares located in both the United States and Qatar.

As a Qatar and Argentine National Champion, the full brother to the U.S. National Champion, Star Of Marwan, along with the 2013 Arabian Celebration Reserve Champion Mare, our own highly valued Adhaba Al Shaqab, there was never a doubt that Faraa Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x GW Natorious Star), 2007 stallion, would have a long-term place in the Al Shaqab breeding program. Faraa was leased by and stood at Haras Mayed, Argentina, during the 2011 and 2012 breeding seasons. Faraa exhibits the conformation, style, and look of Marwan and at Haras Mayed proved to reproduce Marwan’s silhouette along with those most appreciated traits from Marwan in the extreme. From the Haras Mayed-bred foals we have noted that his offspring consistently bear Faraa’s long neck, fine and vertical from the base, good arch and flexibility over the poll with elongated slender throats. The offspring reflect that Marwan structure to the head and face, each one with large black eyes, set wide and flat across the forehead, small well-set ears, refined muzzles, big nostrils, not to mention dark skin with coats like silk, and that all important temperament. Faraa and every one of his offspring have inherited Marwan’s charming and gentle demeanor.

With every daughter retained and grandchildren now gracing the pastures and awaiting their inclusion in the breeding program, Aliaa is confirmed as a leading contributor to our goal to preserve the Arabian breed at its highest level and to make a positive and lasting contribution to the future of Al Shaqab’s breeding program. When Beyond Imagination RB (Hadban Al Shaqab x Justmyimagination by Orashan) was awarded the 2013 Egyptian Event World Class Reserve Champion Yearling Filly title, Hadban confirmed his siring ability. With his largest foal crop born in 2014 we anticipate many more champion offspring in the future. We consider both Al Adeed and Hadban to be near-perfect examples of the breed standard and attribute their ideal conformation to Sundar Alisayyah. Through Al Adeed, Hadban, and their purposefully selected offspring, the important and valuable influence of Sundar Alisayyah will be perpetuated at Al Shaqab forever, ensuring that feeling of anticipation and excitement shared by breeders around the world for generations to come.
