Forty years ago, in the heart of Texas just off the banks of the Brazos River, Judy Sirbasku and her late husband Jim began a small breeding operation based on straight Egyptians. This fateful endeavor would come to be known as Arabians Ltd.

Waco, Texas, forty years ago, may not have populated the list of must-see destinations for the average tourist, but it was home to the largest Egyptian Arabian breeding farm in the world at that time, Bentwood Farms. For Judy and Jim Sirbasku, this proved serendipitous. “I think people kind of fall into things in life,” says Arabians Ltd. manager Shawn Crews. “Judy met David and Marion Gardner, who were involved with Bentwood, at a little horse show in Waco. So right from the beginning there was never anything else in her vision but straight Egyptians.” “I was looking for something new to do,” explains Judy. “So I started going to horse shows in the area. Arabian shows were so much fun. When I met David, he introduced me to people who helped me understand a bit about the breed.” Gardner had been a major force in Arabian breeding for years through his involvement with Bentwood Farm and then with his own Gardner Bloodstock. He had also been the driving force behind the syndication of Ruminaja Ali. Since the inception of Arabians Ltd., there is one decision that has defined their contribution to the breed — Thee Desperado (The Minstril x AK Amiri Asmarr). “Judy’s legacy in the Arabian breed is Thee Desperado,” states Shawn emphatically. “That is what she will be known for.” Thee Desperado was a bay colt that Judy and Jim had the foresight to become involved with when he was only a few weeks old. Later, they would purchase him and create a dynasty for Thee Desperado that would not only be the cornerstone for Arabians Ltd., but also have a lasting impact throughout the breed. “I am prejudiced when it comes to Desperado,” says Shawn. “When he was born, Judy, Jim, and I were not experienced enough to ever consider that he may not turn out. We were just in love, and God has shined on that horse and all who have been involved with him since then. The horse was just a genetic powerhouse. He blessed our life with all he has given us. His daughters are producing the core of so many breeding programs around the world, and I don’t think we have seen all of the best horses yet to come. Those people who purchased lifetime breedings to Desperado when he was five weeks old have made their money back many times over.”

With a sire like Thee Desperado, it is natural that world class sons would follow and join their sire on stallion row at Arabians Ltd.: Thee Infidel (out of Bint Magidaa), Pimlico RCA (out of Bint Bint Jamil), bred by Dara Meadows Farm, and The Sequel RCA (out of La Marsala), along with grandson Bellagio RCA and his son Infinity RCA. That said, one could argue the strength of the Arabians Ltd. breeding program lies in the Desperado daughters and grandaughters. They come in all styles, looks, and colors, but one thing they all have in common is their ability to replicate quality time and time again. The challenge, of course, when you have a breed-changing sire on the farm is finding the next step for the breeding program, the outcross for Thee Desperado. For Judy Sirbasku, the search for the perfect sire to accomplish the goal took them across the Atlantic to the grey Ansata Sinan son *Mishaal HP (out of Mesoudah M). “When Judy heard about this horse, she sent me to Germany — quickly,” remembers Shawn. “I saw him with my eyes, but Judy is the one who had the guts to make that all-important decision. Frank Spönle knew the Desperado daughters well and had confidence in the horse for us. The pedigree, once again, was what we bet on. He is by Ansata Sinan out of *Imperial Madheen’s full sister — all lines that had crossed so well with Desperado daughters. Judy really has that instinct for what lines will blend together well, and she was right on the mark. Mishaal’s blood makes the whole program work. Thee Infidel, Pimlico RCA, The Sequel RCA, Alixir, and Bellagio are all great stallions that we use for different traits — but all closely related. With Mishaal in the mix, it all works beautifully.”

Tragically, Judy would lose both Thee Desperado and *Mishaal HP in the same year, 2013. While Judy is the first to concede it was a difficult year, she had planned for this eventuality. “While it took us a bit to lift our hearts up again and look toward the future, we already had the genetics in place for moving forward. This not only made the transition easier, but incredibly exciting in some respects!” Obviously there was an impressive genetic lineup of Thee Desperado descendants to carry the mantle, but since Mishaal’s death was unexpected, it brought a unique set of challenges. “When we lost Mishaal, it was during breeding season and we had mares lined up everywhere,” says Shawn. “But within 10 days, with help from Allison Mehta, we had Dr. Dietrick’s Mishaal son Ramses Mishaal Nadir (out of Ramses Minx) on the farm and breeding mares without even a complete contract. That horse brought in different bloodlines for us and we had great foals. We had him for two and a half years. Judy had become quite attached to Nadir and cried when he left.” While Ramses Mishaal Nadir was on lease, Judy had her eye on the young homebred Shah Mishaal RCA (out of Bint Asila RCA) as a possible successor to Mishaal. “What attracted us to Shah Mishaal was an additional bloodline that we had always loved, the stallion *Jamilll,” says Judy. “Shah Mishaal’s dam line traces to Imperial Mistilll, one of *Jamilll’s best daughters. We have wanted to add that line for a long time.” Though Arabians Ltd. continues to look for more outcross blood, Judy is content with where the program is currently. “Mishaal gave us 10 years,” explains Judy, “because his sons and daughters can mix with anything we want as they are 50 percent outcross blood. While we are always looking for the next outcross, it doesn’t feel as urgent.” Another contributing factor to a lack of urgency is Judy’s constant search for new blood, and just not

from stallions. “Judy doesn’t just sell horses, she buys them. In addition to stallions, she brings in other mare lines when she sees something that really complements the genetic make up of the herd. Judy is able to see the entire picture, not only of her horses, but her client’s horses, too.” Lack of urgency does not stop Judy from moving forward if it is the right thing to do. An outcross that has been used recently at Arabians Ltd. is Kamal Ibn Adeed (*Al Adeed Al Shaqab x NF Bint Sahja), owned at the time by Dennis Fournier. “We had Kamal on lease for well over two years. Every time he was supposed to go home, I would call Judy and ask if I could persuade Dennis to extend the lease,” explains Shawn. “This was the first time we had been able to use *Al Adeed Al Shaqab blood. In addition, we had always loved Ansata Hejazi, and Kamal is out of an Ansata Hejazi daughter.” Shortly after their leases ended, Kamal Ibn Adeed was sold to Egypt, and Ramses Mishaal Nadir was sold to Qatar. It demonstrates the renown and influence Arabians Ltd.’s decisions have within the industry on a global level. “It seems that after we use them, those stallions are in demand with breeders. Often, we have leased stallions when they are really not well known yet, just kind of on the cusp of their careers,” remarks Shawn.

Another example of stallions that have made an indelible impact on the Arabians Ltd. program, and then moved on to a client’s program, is Alixir. Mohamed Jaidah of Qatar is a good friend and client of Judy’s, and his program was always centered in large part on the blood of Alixir. “We have never offered Alixir or any of our senior stallions for sale,” explains Shawn, “but when I mentioned to Judy that something felt really right about speaking to Mohamed about Alixir, she became quiet. Several weeks later, Judy expressed to me that this thought would not leave her mind! So she gave me permission to discuss Alixir with Mohamed. If it was not right for him, nothing lost. From the first time Mohamed and I spoke, we both knew that the result would be adding Alixir to the Al Jood Stud breeding program. Judy couldn’t be happier and knows in the end it was the right decision.” In addition to world-class stallions and Arabians Ltd.’s role as the launching pad for young stallions’ breeding careers, Judy’s vision has created a world-class broodmare band that is founded first and foremost on the qualities of conformation and temperament. It is also a diverse group genetically, as Judy likes to breed opposites. For example, mares that have extreme faces and compact bodies are bred to the tall, stretchy, leggy stallions: Thee Infidel, or Bellagio would be the go-to choices. The tall, leggy mares are typically bred to Mishaal descendants. He was tall, but lends substance to the extremely refined mares. All that said, temperament continues to be a key aspect. “I used to have handle those horses that came in from Egypt,” says Shawn. “I once gelded an expensive colt that I had picked out for Judy when it became obvious that he simply had a mean streak. Life is too short to have those kind around, and for sure too short to have them in a breeding program.” There are five very important and primary dam lines to the farm. Judy’s favorite has always been via the mare Glorieta Zaarina who she purchased in foal to Ruminaja Ali. That mare gave Judy a black filly named Aliashahm RA and she was bred to Desperado for Rhapsody In Black, who is the dam of Bellagio RCA. Judy just loves this mare family. It has always been the love of individual mares and their personalities that draws Judy in.

When asked about which trait Shawn admires most in Judy as a breeder, Shawn is quick to answer. “Judy is really stubborn as a breeder, and I mean that in a good way,” explains Shawn. “That is a word I would use to describe her. When she has her mind set on something, she has laser focus. If she is going to get behind it and support it, it is 150 percent.” As an example, Shawn describes an incident a few years back when *Imperial Madheen (*Messaoud x Madinah) semen was donated at auction. “Judy called and said, ‘I am going to bid on this Madheen semen, what should I make my limit?’” remembers Shawn. “I know the challenges of using frozen semen and told her not to go over a conservative amount. Next thing I know, I am getting calls that Judy is at $15,000. I thought, ‘What the hell am I going to do about this?’ Judy ended up purchasing it for $30,000. It was a horse that we have always admired as Mishaal’s dam, and is a full sister to Imperial Madheen. Bottom line, Judy wanted it.” In addition, Shawn explains the meticulousness with which Judy takes her role as a breeder and caretaker. “Judy is an amazing record keeper,” says Shawn. “I joke with her that she would have been that Bedouin in charge of reciting and keeping track of the families and matings. Her inventory notebook is kept by families, and it is really quite interesting. She remembers her initial vision and can give you info on foals she produced 25 years ago. Past records are hugely important to present-day decisions. We do make mistakes, but try not to ever make them twice. Judy’s records are invaluable in all of our breeding decisions.” Shawn is pretty succinct in some of the most important changes she has seen in Judy’s breeding throughout the four decades. “In the bloodlines that we have today, I hardly have to look at their legs when they are born,” she says. “With each stallion that we have used, that has just been a fabulous improvement. She has also done a lot with size; they are a lot taller, more imposing horses without losing the type. In addition, the mind, the intelligence, and the kindness have just been exponentially improved over the horses that she started with. We deal with them all day long — we don’t want to have to deal with difficult horses.” The industry has recognized Judy’s stewardship of Arabians Ltd., and her contributions to the breed as a whole. In 2012 at the Egyptian Event, she was presented the Pyramid Society Trustees Award. In 2014 the

Arabian Horse Breeders Alliance gave the Ambassador Award to Judy Sirbasku and Shawn Crews at the Las Vegas Arabian Breeders World Cup. Judy also loves and has supported the Egyptian Event as the Signature Sponsor for several consecutive years. Her stallions’ breeding rights have generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Egyptian Breeders Challenge. Judy, however, would be the first to acknowledge that none of this was done alone, and she recognizes the incredible contributions made by her amazing clients, her family, and affiliate farm owners, Mike Cimino, Mark and Deb Burke, and Greg Knowles. Lastly, she is grateful for David and Marion Gardner, and Jim Maloney, for their longtime friendship and support. Judy has always been about the future of the breed, and perhaps what is most exciting is the growing influence of the straight Egyptian. Straight Egyptian classes have been added at Scottsdale and other venues, which has created a host of opportunities for straight Egyptian breeders. As one would expect, Judy is supportive of the straight Egyptian classes that are springing up in the United States. “What Taryl O’Shea and the Scottsdale board of directors have done with those divisions has been really good for the straight Egyptian market,” says Shawn. “When I was at the International Show at Scottsdale, I looked around and it was standing room only, and everybody was pushing, trying to get a better look. A lot of people have never seen high quality straight Egyptian horses. As I was watching I thought, people love this. They are starting to want straight Egyptian blood to infuse into what they are doing. A great example of how straight Egyptian blood, and Thee Desperado in particular, has gone global is the black mare The Vision HG (by Thee Desperado), owned by Ariela Arabians of Israel. Chen Kedar has done a superior job with first The Vision HG, and now using the *Mishaal HP daughter Saniyyah RCA.” “It is really amazing how international this program has become. It was a slow evolution of some of the finest horses in the world that have been embraced by breeders of all Arabian horses, not just Egyptians. I am particularly proud of the last part,” adds Judy with a smile. “Often I find a horse somewhere in the world that really captivates me, only to find out it traces to Desperado. “Many of our clients are just in love with the horse itself; a lot of them don’t even care whether they show,” Judy continues. “In this respect, it has been a private and personal experience for our clients and us. Many horses went to breeding programs that are being developed in a very thoughtful and private manner. There is little doubt of the continued demand for Desperado and Mishaal blood, whether as foundations for new programs, or to reinforce existing programs. And to me, that is the greatest reward.”
