Egyptian National Championships

he El Zahraa 17th National Arabian Horse Show was held in Cairo, October 21-22, at the EAO Stud Farm. The first surprise that greeted visitors was that the show had been moved back to the original show grounds after two years in a different location. (The previous two years had been set up in temporary grounds closer to the barns, but the great majority of guests wanted it back at the original stands near the EAO office.) The week before the show had been unseasonably hot for Cairo but fortunately the weather changed, and both the horses and people were able to enjoy pleasant fall days. Ahmed Hamza, Chairman of the EAO, was chief organizer of the Class-C show and began the festivities by welcoming the many guests from abroad as well as many new people from Egypt. There is always some confusion in Egypt over the National championships. Two shows are held in Cairo every year; one at El Zahraa and one by the Breeders’ Association, and they alternate what is deemed the “official” Egyptian Championship show. This year it was the Breeders’ last spring and next year it will revert to the EAO. Approximately 170 horses competed in the two-day event. Thursday morning began with two sections of filly classes born 1/10/08–30/9/09 with a total of 42 horses. The winner of Section A was Ghazaal Tahani, a very promising young filly by Ezz Ezzain out of TB Shadiya. The typey grey filly is carrying on in the tradition of her two parents, who have been champions in previous shows, as she went on to win the Junior championships at this show. In second place was Rowaeda Al Kaherah (Mirajh RCA x Mounira). In the filly classes, most of the breeders and owners of the winners were one and the same. Section B went to Magda El Gabry (Gamil El Gabry x El Thay Matala), a dark grey filly who had the highest score for movement among the fillies and also won her class at the Egyptian Nationals earlier this year. Second place was won by Mona Al Bawady, by Barakat Al Khaled out of Shwikar Saqr. The second class, for two-year-old fillies, also had two sections with a total of 28 entries. In Section A, the winner, who scored well in head and neck, was Rayhana Al Kaherah, another foal by Mirajh RCA, and this time the dam was Sameira. She was awarded the Reserve Junior Championship. Second place went to Hamees Tahani, a grey daughter of Ezz Ezzain out of Serene Bana Al Daira. She was Reserve Junior Champion at last year’s EAO Championship. Section B was won by Bushra Ghaleb, a compact bay filly by Khaled Saqr out of Nariman Al Boraq, who showed a lot of refinement. She won the Silver Junior Championship at the Breeders’ Association Nationals in the Spring. In second place was Amira Al Farida by Said El Chamsin out of Musayida Al Qusar.

Class 3, for fillies born 1/10/06–9/30/07 went to Zeinah Al Hamd, an expressive grey filly by Nasr Al Sharbatly out of Negma El Gabry. Zeinah’s movement took her to a close win (a fraction of a point) over the second-place Gawaher El Gabry, an elegant chestnut by Ajmal Sinan out of Dalia El Gabry. Zeinah, who is bred and owned by Ahmadeyat Al Hamd Stud, was the Bronze trophy winner for Junior females. The afternoon took us to the mare classes and the great majority of the entries were familiar to the crowd since they have been in various shows throughout their years. The first mare class, for those born in 2004–2005, was a strong class with only a small fraction of a point determining first and second place. The winner was Khorafa El Gabry, a powerful chestnut mare by Ajmal Sinan out of Gawharet Aal Hanafi; she came into the ring with the appearance of being there to win. Even though she is in foal, her high-reaching movement took her to a narrow win over the secondplace mare. She also went on to win the Mare Gold Championship. Khorafa had been Junior Champion at the EAO in 2008. Barely behind her in second place was Anbar Noor (Ibn Arabia Saqr

x Hams El Koloub Noor). This highly refined grey mare, owned since she was a filly by Rabab Stud, continues to improve, with type and head and neck scoring well. Anbar won the Bronze trophy. In 2008, she had been Reserve behind Khorafa at the EAO Nationals and she has won Reserve in nearly every show she has entered, including the Egyptian Nationals in 2006 and the EAO in 2007 and 2008. The second mare class, for those born 2002–2004, was won by Doaa Al Hamd, a chestnut mare who very much represents the look of her sire Sindbad and who is out of Ayah. Doaa was Reserve Champion back in 2004 and has placed well in numerous shows since then. In second place was Sabrah Om El Hana (Tallahsman x Om El Hana SEA). The last class of the day, for mares born 2002 and older, was won by Moghah Saqr, an interesting combination of refinement and power. The dynamic dark bay mare, by Imperial Madori out of SES Marah, has been in shows practically every year both at the EAO and at the Breeders’ event. She won the EAO Gold in both 2007 and 2008 and took the Silver in this year’s show. She was bred by Saqr Stud but has been owned for years by Khattab and Tahani. Second place went to Nelly Ghabour (Watef x Azama). The correct chestnut mare with very easy movement is what is referred to as a “good mare,” and as has placed well in shows throughout the years for her owner, Rabab Stud. The second day of the show was

place came Al Abgar El Mousa (Al Hagees El Mousa x Areeb Al Arab El Mousa). The class for colts born 2006–2007 went to the Reserve Junior Champion, Amirhom El Sheruk (Adham El Sheruk x MB Marlona). It was type that gave him the placement, just squeaking in over the second-place colt, Ezz Omar Hamdan F, another son of Ezz Ezzain out of the mare Ashrakat. The showy grey scored very high on movement. When it came time for the stallions, the influence of the outside blood was quite evident. The stallion Tamer Al Khalediah (El Thay Kemal Pasha x RN Al Shahba) looked very unlike the locally bred entries. The big bay stallion dominated the ring when all the entries came in for the preliminary look-see. It was his score for head and neck that gave him the tight win over the second-place Montasir Al Hamd (Ayser x Negma El Gabry) and the Reserve Championship for the show. The last two stallion classes were small, with only three entries in each. In stallions born 2002–2004, the winner was an elegant and typey Talal El Gabry, by the EAO stallion El Ragel out of Basashah. His movement was not up to his usual standard but he managed to pull a very close win over Rahawan Kareem (Seef x Morgana). Talal also took the Bronze position in the championships. The last stallion class was won by Kenz Noor (Imperial Madori x Naksh El Koloob Noor). The eleven-year-old bay, of the more traditional Egyptian type, was Reserve Champion at the EAO in 2008 and has won titles both in Europe and in the States before returning to Egypt where he is at stud at Rabab. Kenz has always been a sentimental favorite of his owner, Sheikh Khaled bin Laden, who was especially happy with the win. To add to the show’s flavor, there was a performance of the dancing horses each afternoon following the lunch break. The show was well-organized and moved quickly so that it did not extend into the evening hours. Attendance was good on both days with visitors from abroad as well as from a large number of local Egyptian stud farms. 5 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD

devoted to the males. There were some repeat entries from previous shows but for the majority of the colts and stallions, it was their first time on the scene. First section of the one-year-old colts was won by Sayed Al Kaherah, another of the Mirajh RCA foals to do well in the show. The refined bay colt is out of Sayyeda. Second in the class was Karim Bebo (Teymur B x MB Kariima). As in the filly classes, almost all of the entries in the three colt classes are still owned by their breeders. The second section went to Tourky Al Wafy, an Ezz Ezzain son out of Gamila. Without question, Ezz Ezzain (Ansata Murtajiz x Najaha) is the stallion with the most foals in all the recent shows in Egypt. The stallion himself has won a number of championships but did not show this time. Second place in the class was won by another of Ezz Ezzain son — Ghazal Al Yasser, a promising grey out of Venus Hedayah, who then went on to win the Bronze for Junior Males. Magd Al Farida, the son of two champions (Hamra Alligance x Erada) absolutely lived up to expectations as he won the class for two-year-olds and then the Junior Championship. His dam Erada is an example of EAO breeding (Rawwah x Olfah), she is being used successfully in the current program at Al Farida Stud and was Reserve Champion filly in 2005 at the EAO. The sprightly well-balanced colt with a lot of type scored quite high with his free and light movement. In second

he EAO hosted the International Championship for its 13th year on October 23 -24 at the world-renowned El Zahraa Stud Farm in Cairo. Visitors from the States, Europe, and the Middle East joined a large number of local enthusiasts who came to enjoy two days of horses who have been bred all over the world and now belong to Egyptian and Saudi Arabian farms. Royal blue-and-white draped stands ringed the showring with both VIP tables and gallery seating. Ahmed Hamza, Chairman of the EAO and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, presided over the welcome and the awards as well as overseeing the organization of the show. As with the Nationals, which had been held the two previous days, the organization was efficient and the classes all moved quickly. Approximately 150 horses were shown during the two days. Al Khalediah Farm of Saudi Arabia continued their tradition by bringing a number of horses to participate in the show although this year they brought fewer of the

international champions that usually compete in Europe and the Middle East. This year they were joined by Athbah Stud for the first time. The Saudis won the great majority of the female classes, in many cases winning both first and second place. They also won almost half of the same placements in the male classes. Every single winning horse was bred abroad, reflecting the current thinking in Egypt about the show circuit. All four championships were won by Saudi entries as has happened in most years of their participation. The filly classes immediately set the standard that would be followed for the show with high scores for type and head and neck. The judging system chosen by the organizers removes the high and low scores so that in a few cases the apparent winner did not, in fact, win. Some of the judges feel that this discredits their scoring. In Class 1 for fillies born 1/10/2008–30/9/2009, the winners both came from Athbah Stud in Saudi Arabia. First place went to Ghanyah Athbah, a rather precocious chestnut filly by Eden C out of JJ Ali Baska, who went on to win the Junior Female Championship over fillies who scored higher in their classes. Second place was won by Meqbilat Azbah, a grey daughter of QR Marc out of Martinique J. In Class 2 the first- and second-place winners were separated by a mere fraction of a point. The class winner Meshael Al Khalediah Al Thani (Marwan Al Shaqab x Blue Grass Easy Lovin) just skipped by to win by a sliver over the second-place Mawee Athbah, a chestnut daughter of QR Marc out of Trejor IA. Meshael went on to win the Bronze trophy, although last year she won the Gold Championship for Juniors. The third class for three-year-old fillies was a clear win for Bint Bessolea, a daughter of Marwan Al Shaqab out of HB Bessolea. The mare dominated the ring and took four 20s along with the Silver placement. In second place was Conga O, a large bay by Mazkarade out of Chili Pepper V, imported from the States to Egypt. It was remarked throughout the filly classes that they all looked much larger than their age and certainly than the Egyptian horses from the Nationals. The mare classes opened for mares born 2004–2006 with some very strong entries. The class winner Om El Bernadette by Om El Shahmann out of Om El Benedict was bred in the States and is now being campaigned by Al Khalediah. Her high scores in type and head and neck gave this very showy mare the Senior Mare Championship.

Second in the class was Dalia KA by Marquis I out of Georgia KA, also bred in the States and now owned by Al Farida in Egypt. The very elegant bay mare has always placed first or second in her class for the past three years and took the Bronze trophy at this show. Magora, still a spectacular light bay mare, by Gazal out of Morgotka, took five 20s in type and two more in head and neck and took over the ring with her steady fluid trot. Her body is substantial and her head is not excessively dished, which made her stand out as she went on to take the Reserve Championship. She had been Junior Champion at the EAO in ’05. A distant second in the class went to LV Asmarra, by Al Lahab out of Ariell, bred in Europe. The last mares class, for those born 2002 and older, was won by an entry owned by Athbah, the bay mare Breathless Love Psy who is by Padrons Psyche out of Takmy Breath Away. Second place went to Qatarariat Al Khalediah (Bistro x Naam Al Shaqab) who did not display her usual bright and deliberate movement for her current owner, Rabab Stud, Egypt. A short presentation of some of the EAO stallions, mares, and younger horses was held on Saturday. Unfortunately for the visitors from abroad, the lists printed in English never were distributed and the announcer and music system battled for supremacy to the detriment of the announcer so that the horses were not identified. Those who are familiar with the EAO horses were able to recognize some of the older stallions, who are from the recent royalty of El Zahraa. Among them were: Serag El Din ’92 (Mourad x Safinaz); Tagweed ’04 (Gad Allah x Tee); Baydoun ’98 (Gad Allah x Bint Ibtisam); and Mounadel ’05 (Adl x Mangoomah). Sadly the mares were not

identifiable, which was a great disappointment. The last day of the show belonged to males. As happens every year, many of the horses who had been entered did not show for various reasons. Colts born 2008–2009 had two Saudi entries in the top slots. Fakhr Al Khalediah, a good-sized grey by Marquis CAHR out of Barah Al Khalediah, won with good scores in type and then took the Bronze Championship. One of his stablemates, Ashham Al Khalediah (Thee Ricochet x Psyches Kyss), took second. Winner of the second class had won his class here at last year’s show but did not go beyond that. This year, however, Ibn Jameelat Al Khalediah improved substantially in type. The strong black colt is by Moutaz Al Biwaibiya, last year’s Champion Stallion at the EAO show and out of Jameelat Al Khalediah. Ibn Jameelat won the Junior Gold medal. Second in the class was Milagro TDA, by Bellagio RCA out of Lotus Sadiy, who is now owned locally. The last class, for three-year-old colts, reversed the placement from last year’s show. Two very different bays competed — Jareer Al Khalediah, a Padrons Immage son out of Barah Al Khalediah, was the stronger of the two and won the class on his scores in type and then went on to win the Silver placement. Second place went to a much larger colt, MW Siensei (Gazal Al Shaqab x MW Siena Psyche), who was bred in the States. Stallion classes began with those born 2004–2006 and ended with a three-way tie. First place went to Awwal Al Amaar (Amaar Al Rayan x Farid Nile Dream), an elegant refined stallion whose score in type won him the Silver Championship. As he is drying out and turning pure white, his soft eye is showing up more. Second in the class went

to the typey and correct GR Lahari, the Al Lahab son out of GR Marianah, who most recently won the Bronze in last year’s Internationals at EAO and began his show career with a Junior Championship in 2006 also at the Internationals. Stallions born 2002–2004 was not a particularly strong class with the win only by a fraction of a point for the bay Imperial Kagaan (Imperial Al Kamar x Imperial Baahiyah). Second place went to Rahawan Kareem, by Seef out of Morgana. It was the only class in the Internationals with no Saudi entries. The last class, for stallions born 2002 and older, changed the field with Nijem Ibn Eternity, an extremely flashy stallion by the multichampion Eternity Ibn Navaronne out of Naravna. He had the highest score of the show: five 20s in type, one in head and neck, and three in movement. There was no doubt that he would be the Senior Champion Stallion as he flew around the ring. The big bay Imperial Baareg (Imperial Baarez x Imperial Karmah), bred in the States, made a credible showing and won the Bronze for the show. As in the Nationals, the pace was good. Some of the judges remarked that they had rarely had classes move so quickly. At one of the breaks in classes, they made mention in conversation of Phillip Jenkins’s “Go Box.” The ringmaster explained that it is an emergency kit for both horses and people that he has put 10 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD

together after years of working all sides of the showring. Among the articles are: head collar and lead, bridle clips, head stall, lead shank, first aid kit, sunblock (for people), and most importantly a bag of candies from the U.K. to lift the judges’ spirits. The bright purple duffel bag is positioned in a place easily accessed for any emergency during the show.

Dr. Nasr Marei changed his role for this year’s show. Throughout the competitions, he showed his horses from Albadeia and won a number of championships. Most recently, he was the organizer for the past two EAO shows, which set a new standard. This year, he decided to judge the Internationals for his first time judging in Egypt and was pleased by tremendous cheering from the stands in recognition of his work. He felt that although the organization of the show was quite good, the quality of the horses was not up to what he finds in

other B Shows abroad. Because Khalediah is known to bring strong contenders, the local farms often choose not to enter. Even those who won in the Nationals may not want to chance losing their titles against the Saudis. He has made the suggestion to the EAO that next year the two-day Nationals be separated from the two-day Internationals by four to six months. He feels that this would benefit the horses and trainers and allow for better entries from Egypt. As of now, next year’s event is scheduled for late October again. 11 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD
