THE STALLIONS OF ARABIANS LTD. b y

H e a r s t
As Egyptian Arabian breeding programs go, it would be hard to find a more successful and enduring program than Arabians Ltd., and certainly no farm has done more to cultivate newcomers. Owner Judy Sirbasku and longtime right hand manager Shawn Crews have found the formula for attracting, educating, and helping to establish successful breeders. One can find the products of Judy’s programs wherever Egyptian Arabians are shown in the world. The year 2013 was a tough one for the farm with the loss of their iconic stallion Thee Desperado, and the magnificent *Mishaal HP. But after solemn times Judy and Shawn have regrouped and are clearly focused on the future with a powerful lineup of eight straight Egyptian stallions, all of whom stand to the public. Four of them are sons of Thee Desperado, and the other four are sired by The Elixir, Alixir, *Mishaal HP, and *Al Adeed Al Shaqab. As global as the program is in the spread of its influence, none of the farm’s own stallions are available for international shipped semen. As Shawn says, “Judy has always felt strongly that by limiting the stallions’ availability, the value of their progeny is enhanced. We owe it to our clients who make the effort to come here, purchase a horse and ship it overseas, not to then ship semen to their neighbors.” Shawn explains that each stallion has been selected for certain traits, typically something Judy has identified from the dam’s family. “For instance, we have four Desperado sons, and each of them has a tail female line that we think is amazing. It’s their mother’s family that determines how we use them.” Shawn attributes the farm’s success in the breeding department to Judy’s vast experience and vision. “Growing up at Bentwood,” she says, “I was taking care of great mares like *Nabilahh, *Dawlat, *Omnia, and *Magidaa. Judy was there too, admiring those treasures … When you’ve got those pictures in your mind it makes those decisions easier.” One could say that having this kind of stallion power makes it easier, too. Let’s meet the boys.

According to Judy, Thee Infidel’s foals inherit his height, attitude and charisma, his upright build, a beautiful short face, and an ability to compete well not only against straight Egyptians, but in open competition as well. An English pleasure winner under saddle himself, Infidel has also passed along his wonderful motion, legs, and athleticism to his foals. “He’s very tall, and very similar to Ruminaja Ali,” adds Shawn. “Because he’s bay, many people think he looks like Desperado, but I cared for Ali and let me tell you — Thee Infidel walks like Ali. When he’s coming down the barn aisle you’d better get out of the way, because he’s 1,100 pounds of testosterone. He’s very imposing.” It’s that kind of commanding presence that has convinced mare owners to breed over 250 Infidel foals, making him a new Arabian Horse World “Sire of Significance.” Congratulations, “granddaddy.”

I loved the fact that Alixir was the odd one out in the Arabians Ltd. stallion lineup. In other words, he did not have a cross to Thee Desperado, which meant I could use him as more of an outcross. As I studied his photos, admiring his beautiful face and body, I thought he was the exact image of what I imagined an Arabian horse to be … he reminded me of a warhorse. And in a way, he was the challenger to Thee Desperado. I bought an embryo right to his daughter RSL Faith, a full sister to Bellagio, and I will breed her to my own stallion Marajh KA (Makhnificent x Marquisah KA). I have an embryo right to the famous producer Miss Maggie Mae (The Minstril x Bint Magidaa) and I will breed her to Alixir in the future — the first time that she will have been bred to him. I also own a full brother to Bellagio, and a colt out of the Alixir daughter Imaaras Alixir. So you could say that Alixir is a pillar of my program. I am very excited.
”

ALIXIR “H
e’s the sleeper,” says Shawn. “We had shown and won so much with Pimlico and Thee Asil that we didn’t show Alixir when he was young, and then the foals started coming,
so the long and short of it is, he was shown one time and he was a junior champion.” Judy and her late Jim Sirbasku began breeding Arabians 36 years ago. Alixir’s great-
grandam, *Masira, bred in Holland, was their first import, and Jim’s favorite mare. “As well as her great respect for the horse as an important sire, Judy is quite sentimental about that big, bay horse!” says Shawn. Alxir is one of the more prolific breeding horses at Arabians Ltd. Shawn believes his record is unequaled as a sire of Egyptian Event Junior Champion Colts. His black son, Bellagio RCA (x Rhapsody In Black), was 2005 Egyptian Event Junior Champion Colt and Scottsdale Top Ten Colt, and stands alongside his sire at Arabians, Ltd. Justynn (x Bint Bint Justina) was 2008 Egyptian Event Junior Champion Colt, and in 2009 Lexor Al Mar (x Alia Mar) took the Junior Champion Colt honors. In Switzerland, the Alixir son Al Aneed LDA (Illa Magidaa LDA) has been awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze Champion Stallion medals in Austrian, Belgian, and German shows. And in Egypt, the Alixir son Mirajh RCA (x Rhapsody In Black), another black and full brother to Bellagio RCA, was 2006 Egyptian National Junior Champion Colt, and is siring winners there. The cross of Alixir with the black mare Rhapsody In Black has indeed been golden. A full sisiter, RSL Faith, has three Egyptian Event wins and has produced three foals by Thee Desperado. Two more full siblings also have Egyptian Event wins. “Alixir is handsome, and so tall and well balanced,” says Shawn. “He’s extremely correct in every sense — feet, legs, topline, tail — he looks like his pedigree, which goes to Ibn El Marreekh and Bint Deenaa, whom I took care of when I was a kid. I can see her Alixir’s foals.” An added bonus is his propensity to sire blacks — 26 of his 143 offspring are blacks. “He is the sweetest horse on the place — any kid can go in his stall,” adds Shawn. “He’s crazy about his Jolly Ball — and it has to be a particular one. We threw a new one out for him the other day when we had visitors and he wouldn’t touch it. We have to drag new ones behind the tractor to break them in for him. Visitors love him because they can touch and commune with him. He has probably enchanted more newcomers with his friendly disposition — we think of him as the ambassador.”

Judy is especially excited about Sequel, outcrossed on Mishaal daughters. The Sequel had his first Gold Champion at the Egyptian Event this year: Patriot LSA (x Tammens Ana), Gold Champion Colt/Stallion ATH. At the same show Gaia TF (x Juno RCA) won Silver Champion EBC Filly ATH. Eight more Sequel get have Egyptian Event class placings. One of them, Thee Epitome RCA (x Imdala RCA), 2008 Egyptian Event First Place World Class Colts One Year Old, and second place World Class Colts Two Years Old, is now in Egypt in the ownership of Moustafa El Masry. Of all the Desperado sons, his most look alike is The Sequel, Shawn believes. And it is he who now resides in Thee Desperado’s stall, where he, seemingly intuitively, has assumed a more regal and mature bearing befitting his role as successor. “Judy bought this colt long before we needed him,” says Shawn. “Few would have made that investment, with the real benefits so far in the future. Now, as we mourn the loss of Desperado, the enormity of how crucial The Sequel is to our ability to continue to breed that look, the Desperado look we love sinks in. We are so blessed to have him. Twenty years from now, without The Sequel in the picture, Desperado’s influence would have been diluted with each generation. The Sequel — whom Judy named for his future role — with his concentrated blood, will ensure that the program will have that signature look for generations to come.”

Gamil Stud, Cairo, Egypt. Bellagio’s grandam, Aliashahm RA, also a black mare, was Judy’s most treasured mare, so she is happy to know that the mare will always be part of a precious legacy, embodied by Bellagio. “We breed straight Egyptians so that breeders will always have this pure gene pool to dip back into,” says Shawn. “So we were extremely proud that Ted Carson inquired about a large package of Bellagio breedings to use as an outcross. Historically, the Pyramid Society was effective in showcasing the spectacular results of Egyptian Arabians crossed on non-Egyptians, thus broadening the appeal of the Egyptian Arabian, so we are sorry that the Pyramid Society has decided to exclude Egyptian-related Arabians from future Events.” At the farm in Waco, Bellagio lives outside, where he is happiest. “I remember seeing Asfour living out in his pasture when I visited Simeon Stud in Australia, and noting how happy he was,” says Shawn. “I think this is a key to keeping stallions happy — treat them like horses.” Visitors are always happy to make the trek out to Bellagio’s pasture where he greets them, rain or shine, fresh from a roll, contentment shining in his eyes. ast February, the farm was rocked by the sudden passing of the beautiful German-bred stallion *Mishaal HP (Ansata Sinan x Mesoudah M). For years one of the leading sires at the
Egyptian Event, Mishaal was a valuable outcross for the Arabians Ltd. program. “We had mares standing here waiting to be bred to him,” says Shawn. “Judy and I wanted a Mishaal son. It felt like an omen, when at the very same moment, Judy and I thought of Nadir. We had great Mishaal colts, but not one old enough to step in and quickly breed Mishaal’s mares. Judy had long admired Nadir and was fascinated with his dam’s pedigree. She promptly asked me to call Allison Mehta. Allison was standing Nadir for Dr. Louise Deitrick. Thanks to the great kindness of those two ladies, Nadir arrived in Texas ten days later.” Shawn has a special connection to the young stallion through her long friendship with Dr. Herman Felton, former owner of Talaria Farms, and breeder of Nadir’s dam, Ramses Minx (by Thee Desperado), 2009 Egyptian Event Supreme Champion Mare and 2009 European Egyptian Event Reserve Champion Mare. “I go way back with Dr. Felton and I helped make the breeding decisions that produced Nadir for about three generations back.” “Judy and the Arabians Ltd. clients brought Nadir an incredible book of mares for 2014 foals.
