T

he Pyramid Society’s traditional annual gathering, “The Egyptian Event,” is always much more than a horse show. With educational seminars, barn parties, exciting auctions, a stallion showcase, and a lovely gala dinner, visitors have many things to enjoy in addition to cheering for their favorite show competitors. As the Society nears its 50th year, the theme of this year’s Event, “Celebrating the Legacy,” was particularly appropriate — in this case the “Legacy” referred to the Society’s co-founder, Judith Forbis, and the 60th anniversary of Ansata Arabian Stud. Visitors to the main arena were greeted by a display of historic photographs of Donald and Judith Forbis and Ansata horses, as well as the original jockey silks worn by Judi when she competed in the races in Turkey in the late 1950s. On Friday, attendees gathered for a breakfast at historic Spindletop Hall and then filled the Kentucky Horse Park Theater to listen to an engaging lecture by Joe Ferriss on the Ansata influence.

The highlight of the celebration, however, was the beautiful gala dinner at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort, graciously sponsored by Bait Al Arab, Kuwait State Stud. A seating area just outside the ballroom featured intricate hand-stitched Egyptian wall hangings, personally designed by Judith, that were used to decorate the Ansata show stalls over the years. Inside the ballroom, elegantly decorated in tones of turquoise and gold, all were greeted by an illuminated ankh as they entered. Kuwait was further represented at the gala by the evening’s feature film, sponsored by Kuwait Straight Egyptian Breeders, which celebrated the life of Judith and the influence of Ansata. Two other lovely ladies with a huge impact on the Egyptian Arabian were also joyously celebrated at this year’s Egyptian Event. Judy Sirbasku, whose Arabians Ltd. was the Signature Sponsor of the show for the fourth year in a row, was given a Milestone Award in honor of 40 years of continuous breeding of Egyptian Arabians. A film highlighting the contributions of Judy and her late husband Jim was shown in the main arena during the show finals on Saturday

GOLD CHAMPION STRAIGHT EGYPTIAN SENIOR STALLION MIKEEN EL MASR

BRYANT PHOTO

“Mikeen is a very special horse and is a rare gem,” says Mary Ellen Chavez. “When I saw him for the first time he took my breath away. I knew what he was capable of, but the reality of it actually happening was incredible! There is very little that you can fault about him. Pat Platzek of El Masr Arabians went ‘outside of the box’ when she bred this horse and the results are stunning. “Before he went into the ring, I was a nervous wreck. I was feeling very positive, as the team at Arabians International had him looking his very best, but you never know what the judges will think. When he burst into the ring, my heart jumped, and I just knew that he really was as amazing as I thought he was. He was so different from all the others in the finals. As we waited for the numbers to be called, I could barely stand it. Bronze was called and it wasn’t Mikeen, then Silver was called and once again it wasn’t Mikeen. At that point I was a wreck, as he either had the Gold or nothing at all. Gil from Arabians International came into view across the arena, and we signaled to find out what the results were. He gave us the thumbs down, and I was so scared. A few short moments later, the announcer called Mikeen as the Unanimous Gold Champion, and I nearly passed out and then jumped up screaming. I will remember that moment for the rest of my life. It was an incredible feeling of accomplishment, as well as satisfaction knowing that everyone thought of him as I did. I was so proud of him. “Mikeen is now at home in his pasture enjoying some freedom. He has Mary Ellen Chavez. accomplished everything

night prior to the award ceremony. This Egyptian Event also celebrated Anna Bishop, beloved Executive Director of The Pyramid Society, who was retiring after 33 years of dedication to both the Society and the Egyptian Arabian horse. On finals night, Anna and her family were then treated to “victory” laps around the arena in a horse-drawn carriage to the accompaniment of a cheering crowd. Attendees expressed their excitement at the upbeat and positive atmosphere that abounded at this year’s Event, held for the first time in late August. As Event honoree Judith Forbis has often pointed out,

he needs to in the show arena here in the U.S. with three Gold Championships in the past year. He deserves a well-needed rest to get prepared for breeding season 2019.”

however much we treasure our beautiful Egyptian Arabian horses, the special people associated with our horses are equally precious. This camaraderie among members, attendees, and friends is especially evident to all who attend the Egyptian Event, whether admiring the horses of fellow breeders at the barn parties, dancing the night away at the gala, or sharing in the excitement of a show win. Next year is certain to be another sensational Egyptian Event as The Pyramid Society celebrates its Golden Anniversary, and all are invited to come to Kentucky to join in the festivities! Portions of this introduction were previously published in The Arabian Horse Letters, a publication of Bait Al Arab, Kuwait State Stud.

THE EGYPTIAN EVENT

SILVER CHAMPION STRAIGHT EGYPTIAN SENIOR STALLION EUREKA ZAKI “Eureka Zaki, bred by my mother, Jeannette Longley, whom we sadly lost in late 2015, was her dream come true,” says Cathie Cash. “A member of the Scapa Syndicate, she chose to breed him to her mare Dianaah, a half-sister to international champion Nader Al Jamal. Eureka Zaki’s upright stance, well laid-back shoulder, long graceful neck, extraordinary presence and carriage resulted in his being ranked third in the USEF Arabian Halter Horse of the Year standings in 2013. “As he was announced Silver Champion Stallion at this year’s Event, I felt Mom’s presence and gratitude that I am able to carry on her dream.”

GOLD CHAMPION STRAIGHT EGYPTIAN SENIOR MARE DAENERYS

STINE PHOTO

“There is so much of Good Faith, her dam, in Daenerys,” says owner Gail Ahrens. “We loved Good Faith’s delicate head and frame, but we could not assess her athleticism since she injured a leg in her youth. We are so proud of Daenerys for realizing Faith’s potential. Our hope is to breed horses that have phenomenal potential in a performance career. We are looking forward to exploring what Daenerys loves in the upcoming year. “Daenerys has the perfect mix of beauty and self-confidence. She is so in sync with trainer Mike Neal that he positions her, and she calmly waits for him to ask for her to move. Her willingness to set up quickly and quietly gives the judges a chance to see her amazing intelligence, gentle spirit, and beauty immediately. And it Gold Champion Straight Egyptian Senior Mare and Most Classic is hard to look at her face and not feel that her Head DAENERYS (Burak Ben-Eden EA x Good Faith), owned by Gail ancestors have passed on the best of everything Ahrens, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and bred by Eden Ahrens. they had to offer. “It is so hard to look at my own horses objectively and not be affected by the their individual histories. I always look at the other horses in her class and I am overwhelmed by their beauty. I never expect any of my horses to win, so I am always shocked by the results. After the class I very much want to be hands-on with bathing and grooming — I just want to tap into that bond and let her know how thankful I am to be part of her team. “This year Daenerys has clearly become the top mare in the field. Her confidence is unquestioned. But in the barn, she is an absolute sweetheart to work with. She is very attached to Mike, and it is a pleasure watching them together. “We are looking forward to her first foal via E.T., due March 27. She was bred to Justynn (Alixir x Bint Bint Justina). We are currently finalizing our decision about breeding her this year. “We are planning to take Daenerys and Caiiro (Alixir x Good Faith), 2018 Egyptian Event Liberty Champion and Reserve Champion Egyptian Stallion ATH, to a few shows this year. They are both qualified for the U.S. and Canadian Nationals, so we are expecting to show in one or the other. “This was the most enjoyable Event that I have attended. The mood was upbeat, and there was a wonderful spirit of shared passion on the show grounds.”

THE EGYPTIAN EVENT

GOLD CHAMPION STRAIGHT EGYPTIAN JUNIOR COLT INVISION MFA “Egyptian Event 2018 was a great experience,” says Martha Skapof. “First with Invision MFA taking the Straight Egyptian Yearling Futurity win, and his dam, Gaia TF, taking the Six to Seven-Year-Old Straight Egyptian Mare class. Words can’t express the excitement when Invision became the Gold Champion Junior Stallion. Special thanks to Ted Carson for leading him and his dam to their wins. Special thanks to Lisa Cifrese and Richard Geha from whom we purchased Gaia TF as a yearling. Not only was she a champion at Region 15 and the Silver Champion Junior Mare at the Egyptian Event as a two-year-old, but now she is the producer of champions! “We were so proud of Invision and are looking forward to presenting him at Scottsdale in 2019. We are in love with his extreme beauty, correct conformation, and his beautiful movement. We hope to see him become the same high quality sire as his father *Al Ayal AA, 2017 Scottsdale Champion Senior Egyptian Stallion and now 2018 Bronze World Champion in Paris. Looking forward to the future!” Gold Champion Straight Egyptian Junior Colt and Most Classic Head and Champion Straight Egyptian Futurity Yearling Colt (Apr. 16-Dec. 31) INVISION MFA (*Al Ayal AA x Gaia TF), bred and owned by Martha Skapof, West Grove, Pennsylvania.

THE EGYPTIAN EVENT

GOLD CHAMPION STRAIGHT EGYPTIAN JUNIOR FILLY NASHEETAH MVA “We bought our first Arabian in 2006,” says Dr. Daniel Heithold. “It was the Straight Egyptian filly Thee Desert Rose (Alixir x Nelly Rose) who changed our lives. She went on to win many championships and now is producing champion fillies and colts. Under Ted Carson’s masterful watch, Nasheetah MVA (Al Fayed x Thee Desert Rose) was Grand Champion Straight Egyptian at her first show at Region 12, and we entered her with high hopes into the Egyptian Event. “It was good to see the number of entries, and certainly the quality of horses, increase this year at the Event. The quality of young fillies and colts being produced in the U.S. consistently amazes me. Carol and I walked around the park and knew we had no easy path to win a Gold Championship. It has been a dream of ours since 2006. We were relieved to have both Nasheetah MVA and her half-sister Jassourah Gold Champion Straight Egyptian Junior Filly NASHEETAH MVA (A Illuminatus X Thee Desert Rose) win their MVA (Al Fayed x Thee Desert Rose), bred and owned by Carol and Daniel Heithold, Chickamauga, Georgia. classes and advance to the junior female Championship. “Going into the Championship Saturday night we felt we had already accomplished a milestone by getting two fillies into the finals. Once the class started it was a blur. We had horses at different ends of the ring. There were so many great fillies in the class, and it seemed to take an eternity until the results were in and Nasheetah was named Champion. “It is such an honor to win at the Egyptian Event, and we do not take it lightly. Nasheetah MVA is a special filly. She is a fourth-generation tail female Champion at the Event. She combines the best of Al Fayed (Ansata Sinan) and Thee Desert Rose (Alixir). She had high marks for her movement, body and neck. This was a breeding that infused outcross blood and added big eyes and prettier face, I believe. We are honored that the judges pinned her Champion on that night. I have an obvious bias (we took several other horses) but would like to thank all the judges for some of the most consistent and timely cards I have ever seen. “Going into 2019, we are considering taking Nasheetah MVA to the Scottsdale show with Ted Carson. We cannot thank him, Cory Byrne, and his entire staff enough. We talked about this show one year prior in a coffee shop with this lofty goal. It has been a memorable journey. We look forward to sharing our success and failures with all our friends who have become family again next year!”
