✦ Named “Best of Brazil” ten consecutive years (2004 to 2013) ✦ Other titles include “Best Breeder” and “Best Exhibitor” of the Brazilian National Show in both halter and performance. ✦ Registered more than 500 JM foals in 25 years. The year 2013 was exceptional for Haras JM, the year in which Haras JM earned the tenth consecutive year as Best of Brazil. We look forward to welcoming breeders to Haras JM — one of the premier stud farms of Brazil, and South America.
“I dedicate the winnings of our ten consecutive years as Best of Brazil to my mother Lia, my father Nendo, my wife Maisa, to my grandmother Dida, to my sons José and João Ricardo, and my daughters Vivian and Stephanie.” — José Alves Filho

One truth of the Arabian horse world: successful breeding programs are not born overnight. Sometimes they arise through serendipity. Sometimes they spring from a hobby into something bigger. Sometimes they are lifelong dreams, finally realized. The origins of farms are as varied and fascinating as the horses themselves. The decision to take the initial spark and turn it into something indelible is only the beginning of the journey; financial resources and connections alone do not create an award-winning program. Like any worthwhile endeavor, a successful breeding program is created over years of careful planning, study, and commitment. World-renowned Arabian breeding operation Haras JM, owned by José Alves Filho and his wife, Maisa Tucci Alves, followed its own path to prominence. In fact, the operation began with no Arabians at all. The family’s interest in horses began with the Mangalarga Paulista, a typical breed of horse developed in Brazil. “My brother and mother started breeding Mangalarga,” Alves explains. “I liked Mangalarga and respected the Brazilian tradition and interests of my family, so naturally I supported them. But in 1989 I discovered I preferred Arabian horses.” His children asked him to start breeding Arabians, and initially he did that, primarily for them. Soon enough, breeding Arabians became Alves’s passion. “I have loved to breed dogs, horses, cows, birds, and rabbits, since I was ten years old. When I started with Arabian horses I felt it was in my blood. I am very enthusiastic about the Arabian horse. It is a great pleasure for me to make the breeding decisions each year, to choose the stallions for the mares.” “Passion” seems too inadequate to describe the Alves family’s fervor for the Arabian horse. Their Brazilian facility, named Haras JM for José and wife Maisa, is home to 400 purebred Arabians and 160 Mangalarga. Situated on 500 acres in Monte Mor near the city of São Paulo, the farm is both functional and breathtakingly beautiful. When he began 25 years ago, Alves’s vision was not only to create a breeding operation of the highest quality, but also to create a luxurious, welcoming destination to share his horses and program with Arabian enthusiasts both near and far. This vision has been fully realized. The stunning custom-built home includes lavishly appointed apartments for guests. Toucans, macaws, and other tropical wildlife abound. “We welcome any Arabian enthusiasts to the farm,” he says enthusiastically. Haras JM is a must-see destination for any Arabian breeder or owner.

Haras JM has established itself as a top breeder, both in Brazil and on the world stage. In fact, Haras JM has earned the title of “The Best of Brazil” as breeder and exhibitor in Brazil for ten consecutive years (from 2004 to 2013). “To be the best breeder is not easy,” Alves confides. “Everybody is competing for this title. To earn points, you need to often place between first, second, or third in many classes. You cannot just show up to get points.” This year, Haras JM dominated the competition, earning over 7,000 points more than its nearest rival. “I play strong,” continues Alves. “I don’t just have a few good horses, but many good ones. There are breeders that have an extremely good horse. I work hard to have many extraordinary and special horses.” What makes a special horse at Haras JM? Alves describes his ideal. “I like a taller horse, and the neck for me is very important. Nowadays, because of the influence of Europe and the search for a refined head, many breeders are losing those great qualities of the neck. I don’t like a horse without a long neck. In Europe, they are primarily looking for a head, but you are not going to ride on a head.” Alves also gives strong consideration to other parts of the horse. “Good legs are extremely important, but oftentimes they are overlooked. And I like a strong back, croup, and topline. The Arabian horse must be harmonious and balanced, charismatic with excellent movement.” Three Brazilian breeders, Paulo Levy, Lenita Perroy, and Luciano Cury, greatly influenced Alves’s early search for the ideal Arabian, and he speaks of their breeding programs with great respect. “These three are my teachers, and very successful breeders in Brazil and internationally. In the beginning, I very much wanted to understand their thought process and it has had a great influence on me.”

Understanding the importance of bloodlines was a big part of this influence. Some bloodlines have become pillars of the Haras JM breeding program. These pillars were descendants of Bey Shah, Aladdinn, Ali Jamaal, Padrons Psyche, and nowadays, Marwan Al Shaqab. “I very much like the mixing of these bloodlines — they bring charisma, expression, refinement, and beauty, which are essential to the Arabian horse.” He also admired Aladdinn, grandsire of his foundation mare SL White Lace. “He is very important,” explains Alves. “And although Aladdinn did not always sire refined heads, the bodies are incredible, with very nice necks. In addition, Aladdinn sired very good legs and topline.” Like all great breeders, Alves understands the importance of mares for the success of his program. “To breed a high percentage of good foals, you really need to be connected to your mares. But mares are not like paintings; they do not last forever. You must renew your mare band constantly.” Indeed, Haras JM purchased 30 new mares last year alone. The foundation of the Haras JM mare band was built upon SL White Lace (Strike by Aladdinn x Four Winds Flare by Four Winds Flag). SL White Lace was bred in the U.S. by Linda and Sathaporn Vathayanon and imported by Alves to Haras JM in 1992. In 1989, looking for mares in the U.S., he was smitten with a beautiful black Strike daughter, but when he decided to purchase her, she was already sold. He asked his good friend Luciano Cury to find a substitute, and the result was the incredible SL White Lace. Two other friends were involved in the purchase of SL White Lace — Doug Dahmen and Greg Gallún. “I am proud to be supported by these extraordinary friends, because SL White Lace started the success of Haras JM Program, bringing Europa El Jamaal, Godiwa JM, and Jarytza JM,” Alves says.

SL White Lace was packaged with a breeding to Ali Jamaal. The future super sire for Brazil, however, was not a known breeding horse at that point. “I had no idea who this stallion was,” Alves recalls with a chuckle, “but we decided to purchase her anyway.” The resulting solid bay filly, Europa El Jamaal, would carry the Haras JM banner around the world, winning National championships in Brazil, Canada, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. SL White Lace was an excellent foundation, but sadly she was lost at the young age of nine. “When White Lace was lost very young giving birth to a foal, it made a big impact on me,” Alves recalls. “So I no longer let my best mares carry a foal, I use only embryo transfer. These important mares are the treasures of my program.” Other Brazilian breeders have followed his lead and now rely on embryo transfer to protect their foundation mares. SL White Lace’s influence is still felt through daughters Godiwa JM (by Kaali JP) and Jarytza JM (by Style SRA). “It will be too hard to sell the mares from the family of White Lace; I will keep them both in my program. I understood that this was an incredibly rich opportunity to have this mare,” Alves says. In addition, he purchased her full sister Striking Rhapsody (Strike x Four Winds Flare). “She is the mother of the excellent stallion Rashid Van Ryad. Another important mare for Haras JM is the Aladdinn granddaughter Hestoriah JM (NV Sure Fire x Nyska HCF by Aza Destiny), who has made great contributions to the breeding program, already having 21 foals.

The chestnut mare Piettra Di Style is a sentimental favorite of Alves’s. The 2012 Brazilian National Champion Mare is by the Haras JM foundation sire Style SRA and out of Divine NVC by CG Balih El Jamaal. She has had only one daughter, by Yllan El Jamaal, Xammour D’Yllan J, but next year will bring foals by Sir Marwan CRF and Pscore. “I am enthusiastic because she is a very special mare. Her show career is now over and she will be one of the main mares of my program,” Alves says.

LESSONS GLEANED FROM 25 YEARS AS BREEDERS AND EXHIBITORS ✦✦ The mares are much more important to the breeding program than the stallions. ✦✦ All long-term breeders must bring aristocrat mares to their program: either the mares themselves, or daughters of these aristocrat mares. ✦✦ We respect the quality of the horses bred in our country, in addition to those bred in the U.S., Europe, South America, and Middle East. ✦✦ To construct a breeding program and achieve status as one of the five best breeders in your country, with the objectives of selecting and optimizing the genetic standards of your horses, it is mandatory to work hard, personally, physically, and intellectually. Breeding also requires practice, financial dedication, and good investments. We must also resist the offers to sell our best horses, which is often a problem. In our 25 years we have seen breeders of high-quality horses losing significant areas of quality in their horses, because they sold their best horses and had to start all over again from a middle- or low-quality level. ✦✦ A large breeding program with more than 70 mares must have more than three stallions and must always invest to purchase what they consider the best quality of each generation. One can consider a generation to be between five to seven years. ✦✦ We have learned that dead horses never win championships. You cannot rest on a reputation. Because of this one needs to invest a lot of time learning the best way to breed Arabian horses, and keep moving forward. ✦✦ To be successful as a horse breeder and exhibitor, you must have a great team of people to feed, manage, condition, and manage the logistics of showing horses, people who care for the horses day and night, all year long. ✦✦ To be successful as a horse exhibitor you must have the support of the best local and international handlers to show your horses. ✦✦ To be successful as a horse exhibitor you must plan your show program and contenders in advance — a minimum of 18 months before the start of a new year of competition.

Like many big breeding operations, Haras JM relies heavily on stallions that they stand themselves to cover their expansive broodmare band. Initially, the stallion Style SRA (Bey Shah x Sociallite by SX Saladin) had an important role at Haras JM. Bred in the U.S. by Dan and Maureen Grossman, with the support of David Boggs, José Alves brought Style SRA to Brazil, where he became recognized as the best Bey Shah son in Brazil. Haras JM started the trajectory of wins from 2004 to 2013 with the progeny of Style SRA. He was the first super stallion at Haras JM. Haras JM utilizes the stallions whose direct sire line traces to Ali Jamaal: Jullyani (Jullyen El Jamaal x Gai Sharise); Yllan El Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Acuity); and the most recent acquisition, Johrdan El Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Juliet El Ludjin). Each stallion has presented Alves with a unique opportunity. “Jullyani has sired the most refined mares that I have today. Moreover, crossing Jullyani with Pscore daughters is producing very special foals,” he says, his excitement evident. As for Yllan El Jamaal, he was brought in for a specific purpose. “I have many mares, and from my point of view it is not best to breed them to only one stallion. Each mare has certain characteristics, and I believe that Yllan is a very strong opportunity for me as a different cross.” The most recent acquisition, Johrdan El Jamaal, was purchased last October. “Johrdan is also Brazilian National Champion,” Alves continues. “I saw some very nice foals by Johrdan and wanted to bring him into my program.”

The Haras JM breeding program stays current by using the most influential blood on the modern show scene. For example, Alves recognized the importance of using Marwan Al Shaqab, but saw his influence in Haras JM’s foundation stallions. “Marwan, in my opinion, receives a great influence from Ruminaja Ali (sire of Ali Jamaal). Marwan gives to his progeny very good necks and throats. He also sires very harmonious bodies,” he says. One of the first Marwan sons to be used at Haras JM was Perignon, out of Psychic Karma by Padrons Psyche. This experiment is just beginning; so far, Alves is pleased with the results. One can see his thoughtful nature as a breeder as he reflects, “I am still learning with Perignon; 2013 was the first year for him in the breeding program. He had around 20 foals, so a good sample to be able to judge what he would produce from different types of mares. They were mostly high quality with some of extremely high quality. Now we need to understand how they develop from the first year to the next. But with Perignon’s pedigree, also from his mother’s side, I can trust he will be a special stallion.” Perignon’s foals may be destined for more than the halter ring as he has many special traits for performance. A large-framed horse, with excellent musculature, Perignon has outstanding legs and a long, useful neck. As Alves explains, “we have had a lot of interest from performance breeders, even racing enthusiasts have discussed using him.”
One of the latest additions to the Haras JM stallion roster is also a son of Marwan Al Shaqab, Sir Marwan CRF (out of Ames Mirage by Brass). His combination of beauty and performance ability convinced Alves that this could be the Marwan son he sought. “Sir Marwan’s dam is also a very special mare for me, being by the Bask son Brass and out of an Afire Bey V daughter,” he says.

As with Perignon, Sir Marwan CRF arrived only recently, so Haras JM has not had a chance to use him on a great number of mares yet, but Alves believes in his siring potential. “Sir Marwan is going to be a successful sire, I am sure about that.” Haras JM is planning to breed many mares to him this season and his progeny will be shown in 2015. Although Haras JM uses a number of stallions, the reigning chief sire is the Padrons Psyche son Pscore (x Bey Shahs Lady). Purchased from Bob and Dixie North of North Arabians, Pscore is half brother to another North American icon, Bey Ambition (by Regal Actor JP), and the well-regarded Pstrategy (full brother to Pscore), all being out of Bey Shahs Lady. Alves speaks proudly of the charismatic bay. “Pscore is really very special, a great son of Padrons Psyche; his charisma is very similar to his sire’s. Pscore is siring very refined colts and fillies. Today he is the main stallion at Haras JM, and covers the most mares.” On average, Haras JM has 70 foals a year and roughly half of these foals are by Pscore. Pscore is also popular with many other breeders in Brazil. His daughters have sold well at auctions, demonstrating the demand for his progeny. Pscore’s influence has gone international. His daughter Sherrize D’Pscore JM has been Uruguayan National Champion for two years. She was Brazilian National Champion as well.

While the sire side of Pscore’s pedigree was, of course, of interest to Alves, it was the dam that really sold him on the purchase. “Bey Shahs Lady is an American icon, just an incredible mare. I think she is one of the most important broodmares in the U.S. It is important for a stallion to have a special mother,” he says. “Pscore shows like his father. I am sure that the Norths look very fondly on Pscore and are happy to have another Padrons Psyche representative in Brazil. The Norths made a great sacrifice to part with Pscore, and I always thank Bob and Dixie for the wonderful opportunity that they gave to me to purchase him. Just as he is eager to extol the accomplishments of his farm, Alves is quick to praise his hardworking staff and trainers who carry the Haras JM banner on a daily basis. Elder Rodrigues and João Rodrigues (Zetão) expertly manage the daily affairs of the farm. For training, Haras JM horses are entrusted to Rinaldo Longhini, Rodolfo Guzzo, Zeze Rodrigues, Dejair Silvestre de Souza, Francisco Rego, Manuel Balarine, Arthur Nascimento, Zico Guardia, Sandro Pinha, and Dagmar Giordano. All of these talented professionals are critical to Haras JM’s growing success. Despite his many accomplishments, Alves dwells not on the past but looks ahead. He exudes enthusiasm when he discusses the future of Haras JM. “I am very excited about the future foals of Haras JM. I believe strongly in my mares, and I believe in their contribution to the breed,” he says enthusiastically. The Brazilian jewel of a farm will continue to lure Arabian enthusiasts. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED AS PRESIDENT OF THE BRAZILIAN BREEDERS ASSOCIATION For me, it was an especially great international experience. When I became President of ABCCA, I had many years of experience as a president of one National Association of Enterprises. There is a big difference between a National Association of Enterprises and a National Association of Arabian Horse Breeders. With the Horse Breeders Association, the participant’s emotional side is more prominent, often causing one to double our efforts to achieve the best terms between several divergent wishes. Internationally, the experience was rich, and I would advise WAHO, ECAHO, AHA, ALCCA and all the International and National Associations to invest in and give much more attention to the power of the International Network of the Breeders and Riders of the Arabian Horse. We are at first people, a community of people, that decide that the Arabian horse is our chosen life and that we have done the utmost to promote the Arabian horse. If we all invest more in the international network we are going to be so much stronger, because we have the best international circuit and opportunities for shows and tourism, wonderful people, and collective focus on the best and most beautiful horse on the planet. We have learned and understand that the large breeders must make themselves strongly aware of the importance of their roles to the empowerment of the Arabian Horse and the National Breeders Association in our country, our continent, and our planet. We also need to recognize that the small breeders are also important, and that middle size breeders are extremely important to the success of the quality, quantity, and development of the Arabiain Horse and of the National Breeders Association. But the empowerment of the Arabian Horse and the National Breeders Association is first and foremost the responsibility of the large breeders. — José Alves
