rasileiro CAentro B rabianHorseShow IT WAS THE BEST IDEA FOR A SHOW — EVER! Rogério Lemes Garcia of Skyline Arabians decided to hold the 33rd annual Exposiçao Centro Brasileira do Cavalo Árabe at the Pousada do Rio Quente (“Hot River resort”) in Caldas Novas in the state of Goiás in Brazil. This area of Brazil is famous for its underground thermal activity and it is a popular vacation destination for Brazilians desiring to soak in the many spas. The Rio Quente resort has several hotels on-site, a huge water park, freshwater diving, zip lines, rappelling, an aviary, paintball course, and many other attractions. The resort caters to families and some 3,000 people stay here in the high season. Therefore, as families were making their way to the wave pool, or the thermal pools, or the water slides, they could also stop and watch the horse show. It was a new experience from center ring to see people in bikinis, thongs, and bathrobes lining the rail, but the important thing was that there were people lining the rail. In fact, when some spectators decided to sit on the hill overlooking the soccer field … er … show arena to watch the classes, the resort staff quickly brought in dozens of chairs. Tables with umbrellas provided shade, and one could order drinks from nearby bars sprinkled around the area. Aside from introducing a whole new audience to the Arabian horse, it was a blast for exhibitors, breeders, and yes, judges as well! At the end of the first day of showing, everyone met up in the evening in the thermal pools, heated by the naturally hot river water that flows through the resort. There are many pools of various temperature levels, charmingly lit at night, and most have bars in the center. 2 6 ARABIAN HORSE WORLD 6 FEBRUARY 2010

After a long, hot day at the show, the opportunity to soak in the pool, engage in some hydrotherapy underneath the waterfalls or swim up to the bar for a caipirinha (Brazil’s national cocktail) was unique in my experience of attending horse shows. Unlike in the United States, judges are not presumed guilty until proven innocent, and we mixed with exhibitors, owners, and breeders in a social setting. It is pretty hard to act nefarious in a bathing suit paddling around the thermal pools! The beauty of this idea is that there is something for everyone in the family

to do outside of the horse show itself. Unlimited activities, restaurants, bars, and shopping are all within the boundaries of the park. Furthermore, everything is supervised by resort employees, so it isn’t necessary to keep one eye on the horses and one eye on the kids. Children can bound out of their hotel room in a bathing suit and return at the end of the day. Although the park activities close in the later afternoon, the thermal pools and bars are open well into the evening. As this was the first time a show had been held at the resort, the horse venue left a bit to be desired. However, one of the soccer fields was converted into an arena. The footing was a bit slick and hard, but it was grassy and level. The “arena” was only a three-minute walk from the hotel and was situated between the aviary and the paintball forest. This made for some interesting showing in the halter arena, but the continued popping of the

paintballs was a bonus for those handlers who wanted animated halter horses. There were halter and performance classes, and although the number of horses exhibited was somewhat small, the quality was excellent. The second day of the show didn’t start until 2 p.m,, which meant that everyone was able to explore the resort at leisure. It was fun bumping into various owners or exhibitors or the other judges in line at the water slide, or literally bumping into them in inner tubes going around the “river.” It had quite a strong current and took one on a circular trip through a mist cave before returning to the entrance. It is simply impossible to
look or act like a professional judge in an inner tube! Therefore, there was much banter, laughter, and good-natured ribbing throughout the day. However, once it was showtime, we all put on our game face and went to work. The second night of the show, the Arabian Horse Association reserved the wave pool for a catered party. With a white sand beach, large deck, and lighted bonfires, it was a spectacular setting. After a delicious buffet, a singer provided entertainment that would not be out of place in a Las Vegas lounge, crooning American classics as well as steamy Brazilian songs. He knew how to work the house, serenading

the ladies and even presenting roses to many at the end of the evening. Though we had been told to wear swim gear, as the wave pool would be available for swimming, the outfits of many of those attending the party were a bit more formal. However, no one cared about a dress code and everyone simply relaxed and had a good time. I was dying to swim in the wave pool. I mean, how many times do you get a white sand beach and a huge wave pool for your private use? So, off with the outerwear, down to the swimsuit, and out into the wave pool. A few others joined in after I started, but it was a HUGE wave pool and it really felt as if you were out in the ocean all by yourself. A resort attendant was acting as both lifeguard and wave manager, so he cranked up the waves at our request. Bodysurfing through the waves on a moonlit Brazilian night was a heck of a way to attend a horse show!

I am certainly not constructed to wear a swimsuit in an elegant manner, being of “traditional build” to borrow a phrase from Alexander McCall Smith. So when I saw show photographer Rogério Santos with his camera aimed my way, death threats came readily to my vocabulary. With luck, there will be no photographic evidence, but it was a spectacular evening. The following day, everyone hit the park for a bit more fun — I went diving with the president of the Associação Brasileira dos Criadores do Cavolo Árabe (ABCCA), João Sorvillo, and his wife and Elisa and daughter. In a large freshwater lake, one can “dive” amongst huge fish and a replica of the statue of Jesus that sits above Rio de Janeiro, as well as a statue of St. Francis, a boat wreck, and other interesting stuff sprinkled on the bed of the lake. Everyone had such a spectacular time that serious negotiations are under way to perhaps have the Brazilian Nationals at the Hot Park in future. Furthermore, the owner of the resort is interested in building an equestrian center in the park to encourage more shows to come. It is a win-win situation, which allows show organizers to introduce their horses to a

new, large, and captive audience in a place where everyone can also engage in all the activities of the park. This may be the wave of the future — vacation destination locations for horse shows. The World Breeders Cup in Las Vegas was the first to realize the benefit of having a show at a desirable vacation location. Brazil has gone one step further and it could pay off in a big way in future. The Show I first judged this show over 20 years ago, and was impressed with the quality then. It has continued to improve, particularly with the performance horses and although the number of entries was not large, the quality was still evident. The other show judges were César Augusto Oliveira and Nelson Pinto Moreira. Unlike our shows in the U.S., each class was a Championship, with the first- and second-place winners in three categories — Junior Championship, Colt or Filly Championship, and Senior Stallion and Mare Championship. The Liberty class is always very popular and was hotly contested at this show. The spectators, especially those that 6 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b February 2010
were non-horse people but guests at the park, were thrilled by the performances of the liberty horses. The winner, out of an entry of ten horses, was again a unanimous decision and went to Bey Shahday, by the beautiful Bey Shah son, Shahllenger, out of Lingerrie JM. Bey Shahday thought very highly of himself, and his confident use of the entire arena for his floating trot surely converted many guests to a love of the Arabian horse. Again, brilliant breed promotion. The Western performance classes were dominated by the Rodrigues brothers, ZeZe and Zetao, always battling back and forth in most classes for the win. I want to acknowledge, however, one of the best western horses I’ve had the pleasure to judge in Brazil, the bay gelding Ferdynan Sams (RSC Carhif x AF Hermosa). I have judged this horse at numerous shows in Brazil and he never puts a foot wrong. If ZeZe were to ever bring him to the U.S., he would be a force to be reckoned with. In the English classes, Hafati Syclone Bey (Keystone Bey V x Hafati Baskelle) won nearly all of the English classes unanimously.
