2009 German Stallion Licensing Show

Stallion German Licensing Show THE YEAR 2009 MARKED A MAJOR CHANGE in the method of stallion registration in Germany; by no means the first, but the first for very many years. Ever since state licensing was abolished, there have been ongoing discussions about how to select and recommend the best stallions for breeding, and after a couple of false starts, the gold, silver, and white ribbon system established itself and the annual stallion registration show at Aachen became a must-attend event on the Arabian horse calendar. But not everyone was happy with this system. Some wanted to bring back licensing, while others wanted to go even further and dispense with any kind of evaluation system. Many stallion owners just wanted their horse registered so his foals would get papers, and didn’t care about ribbons one way or the other (or knew very well they’d never get one in any case). So finally, by membership vote, it was decided to decentralize the event. The decision was controversial, as it meant that for the first time in many years, breeders would not be able to see all newly registered stallions in one place. The importance of this was shown by the fact that this was always the one event in the year that everyone attended, small breeders as well as large ones; this show actually attracted more German breeders than a major ECAHO show, even the All Nations Cup. The stallion show was a must, from any serious breeder’s point of view, whether you were interested in showing or not, because this was where you see the development in breeding. However, there is no doubt that it also put a strain on many smaller breeders to have to haul their horses all the way to Aachen just to get them registered, even if they weren’t interested in having them graded and possibly getting a ribbon (the equivalent of what used to be licensing). It was also a fact that the huge number of stallions coming to the annual show was often too much to deal with properly in just two days, even if it wasn’t always

could bring their stallion just for registration, but also for evaluation with a view to getting a ribbon at Aachen. Because the new system didn’t mean that the central stallion show was canceled; merely that it was slimmed down, ideally to include just the better horses that had received a recommendation at the regional registrations. There was quite a bit of apprehension as to how many stallions would actually come to Aachen, and if it would be worth running a central grading show at all. They needn’t have worried. The regional preselection actually did exactly what it was supposed to do. The number of stallions that came to Aachen was down to a manageable forty-something, and with the decrease in numbers came a dramatic increase in overall quality, reflected in a record number of eight gold ribbons, plus another three premium stallions in the licensing group — that’s 25 percent premium stallions. And yes, there

is a licensing again, even if it isn’t the obligatory state licensing of previous years. If you want to use your purebred stallion for breeding Anglo-Arabians, Shagya-Arabians, or Half-Arabians, he needs to be licensed and performance-tested in any case, but anyone who wants to can enter his stallion for licensing. Again, the recommendations were given at the regional events. The amazing thing this year was that of the 10 stallions up for licensing, which included seven purebreds, all were licensed, with three purebreds and the only partbred stallion, a Trakehner, being awarded premium status. That’s an unheard-of 100 percent licensing result. For the registration show, 31 purebred stallions had come to Aachen, including four horses that came just for registration, because for some reason or other they had not been able to make it to the regional events. Of the remaining 27, only seven actually had a recommendation, but the remainder included a number of successful show horses. Another four stallions went home without a ribbon, including two of the recommended ones, showing that a recommendation doesn’t go along with a success guarantee. Of the final 23 contestants, 8 went home with gold, 7 with silver, and 8 with white ribbons. Incidentally, it is sometimes possible to “upgrade” from white to silver at a later date; in fact, one of the silver ribbons this time already had a white ribbon from a previous occasion. The winner of the registration show was both one of the recommended horses and a show champion: Reinhard Sax’s homebred Taymar, a four-year-old son of the U.S.-bred straight Egyptian Kyro KA out of the straight Russian Tamara IV. Tamara was a daughter of one of Reinhard Sax’s finest foundation mares, Takema, herself a show champion and recently deceased at the age of 30. Taymar is actually quite small but looks much bigger, as he

has a large frame and a long neck, plus good bone. Unlike some successful show horses, he would probably look good under saddle as well. Incidentally, the four- and five-yearold sections are the most notoriously hard ones to get gold ribbons in, or any ribbons at all — I don’t believe a fouryear-old ever won the show before. The two-year-old class, on the other hand, is traditionally the class with the highest percentage of gold ribbons, and 2009 was no exception with 4 out of 6 colts receiving top honors. This began right away with the first entry, Muranas Jassehr, who despite being the youngest horse in the show boasts one of the most impressive show records. Bred and owned by Michaela Weidner of Murana Stud, he is sired by Major, himself a premium stallion and an international show winner but, strangely, not a stallion that has been used much by breeders. Jassehr is one of just three Major sons to date, all of which have done well at the shows. Major’s pedigree is a mix of predominantly Egyptian plus Russian and old Weil bloodlines; nowadays, 5 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b JANUARY 2010

with the most popular sires being of mixed bloodlines, you wouldn’t expect that to put off anyone, but many German breeders still prefer straight Egyptians. Overall, straight Egyptian lines still make up the majority of all stallions coming up for registration. In 2009 however, there was not one straight Egyptian among the two-year-olds, which is unusual and may well be a sign of the times. The two-year-old gold winners were certainly a highly variable group, having not much in common besides meriting gold ribbons. Cafra Arabians’ Jaipur (WH Justice x Exotic Pure) was actually the tallest horse in the show with an impressive 15.3 hh, but still clearly far from mature. He is also quite untypical of WH Justice’s foals, which seems to go along with his being bay; Justice’s greys and chestnuts appear to run toward a certain recognizable type, but the bays are totally different and also much rarer. Jaipur’s dam Exotic Pure is a double Kubinec granddaughter with a Spanish dam line, so again this is an interesting mix. The remaining two “golden boys” were a lot smaller, in the case of Gazwan Al Nasser just around 14.2 hh, but well-balanced and again with enough frame and substance to not actually look small. Gazwan Al Nasser was bred in Qatar and represents that country’s most successful lines, being by Gazal Al Shaqab out of Ftoon Al Shaqab by Al Adeed Al Shaqab. A small, refined bay horse with an exquisite head, he has also been shown successfully and is now at the Ismer Stud. Last but not least, was another big-looking small horse, Jumanci OS, by WH Justice’s oldest son Ajman Moniscione out of Praetoria, a straight Russian mare by Kubinec. Bred and owned by Osterhof Stud, he reflects his sire’s double Padron breeding and has also done very well at the shows since he was a yearling. Praetoria, one of Osterhof ’s best producing mares, had another son at this show, the four-year-old grey Emotion, by Eternity Ibn

Navarrone-D, who went home with a silver ribbon. Only one three-year-old received a gold ribbon, and he was definitely one of the stars of the show. Altis, bred by Krzysztof Gozdzialski in Poland, is surely one of the most beautiful WH Justice sons anywhere, with a stunning head with really enormous eyes, plus a spectacular trot courtesy of his Polish dam. He has already sired a very exciting first foal crop at the Ismer Stud, which now owns him together with Turban Stud in Denmark, where he spent the 2009 breeding season. The two remaining gold ribbons went to older stallions that have a lot in common: both are grey, straight Egyptian, nine years old, and sired by the Ansata Halim Shah son Maysoun. Mahmudi, bred and owned by Manuela Schmidtchen, is already licensed with the ZSAA as well as successfully performance-tested. He is out of the Ansata Amir Zaman daughter Mahdeenah, a beautiful show-winning mare who has produced several registered stallions. Authentic Dahman, out of the Alidaar daughter Classic Dahra, is owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Khaled bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar and is currently back on lease with his breeder, Rosemarie Kolster. He was one of the typiest stallions at the show, and he has already sired winning get. If there was a most successful exhibitor at this show, it was definitely Dr. Nils Ismer. Besides getting gold ribbons for both his newly imported stallions, Gazwan Al Nasser and Altis, he also presented his homebred two-year-old

Three-Year-Old Premium winner El Mariachi (Excalibur x Sharima III), bred and owned by Nadja Brennicke.

The question of stallion selection is certain to become an even bigger issue in the near future, now that a genetic test for CA is available as well for SCID, and several hugely popular sires are turning out to be carriers. This is an important subject that will have to be dealt with carefully, sensitively as well as sensibly, and, most of all, openly. Breeding Arabian horses is a matter that requires great responsibility, now more than ever.

Eight-Year-Old Premium winner Mythos (Marwan I x Isy), bred by Jean-Francois Marsot and owned by Jan Calis.

IS Euron for licensing. Another superb colt, another premium — and he was the overall licensing winner, beating not only the older purebred stallions but the Shagya, Anglo and partbred entries as well. Euron is three- quarters Polish and one-quarter Egyptian, one of the few get of the sadly deceased Monogramm son Fernando. His dam is the homebred Evita II, by Siam, also Ismer-bred, out of the imported Probat daughter Elwanga. He takes strongly after his dam, being a well-balanced bay with superb movements, a fairly straight face, but refined and with beautiful eyes. The Ismer Stud is one of the oldest in the country, having celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, as well as the biggest; what a great way to end the anniversary year. By contrast, another premium stallion came from a new and very small breeder. German TV and film actress Nadeshda Brennicke has a passion for Arabian horses and had brought her first homebred colt for licensing. This was the three-year-old El Mariachi, a very typey dark brown colt by Excalibur, a grandson of Padrons Psyche and NV Beau Bey, out of a mare of American and Old German breeding. The final premium winner was something completely different: Mythos, one of the most successful German Arabian racehorses of all time. Being half French, by the Manganate son Marwan I, he is of course not a model of exotic Arabian show type, but still a handsome horse and with the sort of conformation you don’t see very often, especially with tremendous hindquarters — you can see where that racing power comes from. He is very interestingly bred on his dam’s side. His dam, Isy, was bred in Portugal by a stallion of Spanish bloodlines out of a German dam, who is a daughter of El Shaklan tracing back to the old Weil family of Murana in tail female line. This is a winning combination, as Mythos’s full brother Mefisto was also a very successful racehorse. He was also entered for the show, but unfortunately didn’t come. All in all, the results were more diverse than in previous years, taking into account that there are different types of Arabian horses

suitable for different purposes, and all have their justification. All too often, the impression has been that only horses of show type are eligible for premium status; in other years, it would have been unthinkable to have a racehorse of French descent and type among the premium stallions. The results, especially in the licensing group, for once took into account that some of these horses, while they may have their faults and/or would never win a prize at a show, have impeccable performance credentials. This is undeniably important, especially in a time when show types dominate the scene. Beauty is all very well, but athletic ability is just as essential an aspect of Arabian horse breeding and must not be neglected. The question of stallion selection is certain to become an even bigger issue in the near future, now that a genetic test for CA is available as well for SCID, and several hugely popular sires are turning out to be carriers.
