Small groups of foals lie napping in the lush Wisconsin pasture, their tails swishing occasionally in response to summer breezes and a few pesky flies. The foals are watched over by their dams, and by Jaleen Hacklander, secondgeneration owner of Hadaya Arabians. Growing up around Arabians was normal for Jaleen, as was riding, cleaning stalls, attending to new foals, welcoming new horses, and a thousand other memories that she recalls.

“I

remember riding our first Arabian around bareback with a halter and lead rope with my mother telling me to ‘get off that horse and put a saddle and bridle on him.’ My reply was, ‘I’m fine, don’t worry.’

The horse, a stallion, was purchased from the St. Clairs when my parents were looking for a riding horse for my sister. When this stallion stuck his head out of

the barn door and whinnied, my father said, ‘now, that’s my kind of horse’ and traded his dune buggy as a down payment! “My other vivid memory was Ansata Nile Jewel. I knew her bloodlines were important, but I looked at her as just another horse, and I loved her for her soul. She had lost an eye in an accident as a yearling, so Ansata showed her with a black patch over her eye. She got around amazingly well as she lived out the rest of her life with our family. It wasn’t until years later that I understood the significance that she would play in history as the foundation mare for Hadaya. I grew up crawling around her stall and playing in the pastures with her, her offspring, and the other wonderful horses I was honored to be around.”

After college, Jaleen left for the corporate world in Madison. “I really didn’t think about the horses. Then, they just called me back. I phoned my mom and asked her to send a horse to Madison so I could ride. She sent me the sweet gelding Hadaya Ibn Habeeb. I put him under saddle and rode him. Years later, I told my mother I wanted to come home and start breeding. ‘Are you sure?’ she asked me; ‘Are you sure?’ I was, and so I began with a few mares from the Hadaya herd. As a girl I didn’t know this is what I would do. But this is absolutely the right thing, and I can’t imagine any different life.” Today’s mare band still contains the foundation lines from the 1970s, with select additions. Closest to Jaleen’s heart are the descendants of Ansata Nile Jewel (*Morafic x Falima), purchased almost 40 years ago by John and Marianne Hacklander together with her yearling daughter Ansata Nile Moon (by Ansata

Hadaya Nile Blessing (Ansata Qasim x Hadaya Bint Ashia by HadayaBayHalimBey), 2012 mare. “She has all the qualities I’m looking for,” says Jaleen. ”She is my only replacement for her deceased dam. I

establishing the “Nile” line at Hadaya that traces through the Babson mare *Bint Bint Sabbah to the original Egyptian mare El Dahma.

All three mares were by the homebred stallion my parents retained, HadayaBayHalimBey.”

“I have continued to build the tail-female line of Ansata Nile Jewel,” says Jaleen. “I have six mares that are tail female to Jewel; two are over 20 … but still producing! I’ve added to the Hadaya line by leasing Ansata Nile Nefertiti, a greatgranddaughter of Jewel. A filly by Ansata Star Of Qasim arrived this summer. Her name? Hadaya Nile Jewel — and rightfully so, with Jewel four generations and 45 years back in her pedigree. 5 ▪ HADAYA ARABIANS ▪ WORLD

that became EBC Champion Filly and then Silver Senior Champion Mare at the Egyptian Event. I wanted a daughter to carry her line forward, and she finally gave me a precious filly last year at the age of 26. “We tried and tried for a foal, using all the usual medical interventions. Nisr was cystic; Regumate — didn’t work. One day I looked at Nis and said, ‘We’re done. No more hormones.’ I put her on an herbal supplement plan, giving her the chance to choose what to eat and how to regulate her system. Then, boom, she was in foal to Kaliph MH. The vet said her tone was great, so we didn’t put her on hormones. She carried to full term like a queen, and I was speechless when it was a filly, a replacement for this pearl of a mare. The filly is full of snort and blow and ‘look at me’ attitude. She prances through the pasture, tail over her back.” The two other matriarchs unite the Jewel and Kamal lines. Both are by HadayaBayHalimBey, a son of Ramses El Kamal: one, Hadaya Baqtaten, 1995, is a Jewel granddaughter (out of the Jewel daughter Hadaya Nnefertiti), and the other, Hadaya Nile Dove, 1994, is a great-granddaughter through the Jewel daughter Ansata Nile Moon. Asked about the best horses she has bred, Jaleen names Hadaya Nile Blessing (Ansata Qasim x Hadaya Bint Ashia), 2012, from the Nile line. “She has a beautiful

“She was standing apart from other horses, a long-necked, flea-bitten grey mare, huge-eyed with a look of another time and place. Soon, Hadaya Fayekaara was mine. I didn’t know bloodlines. Everything else about the mare, and most of what I came to know about Egyptian Arabian horses, came from Marianne Hacklander and her husband, John. Marianne taught me, over kitchen table soup-n-crackers, how to see the horse. Let the eye wander and then focus here, there, first the eye (lustrous, large, prominent), the hip (long, powerful, full), neck (shapely, expressive) … then back away to reclaim the full contour of the figure… nothing extreme, everything in elegant balance. Look again and again and yet again. School the eye! “The Hadaya-look, the Hacklander aesthetic defied any single label. I never heard Marianne use the word ‘type.’ But, Nisrs Bint Kamal (Ansata El Nisr x Ramses El Kamal by *Ramses Fayek) gave it ultimate expression. Marianne and Jaleen loved the mare, I believe, above all others on the farm. And Marianne was quite taken with our Thee Desperado son, CN Jericho, whom she wanted to see bred to Nisr. We were honored. The result was Nakhda Saqqara, who from her first outing at The Egyptian Event as a futurity and EBC filly, has captured hearts and delighted the eye much as does her mother. Marianne did not live to see Saqqara be named Silver Champion Senior Mare at the Egyptian Event, but Jaleen was there — and in her capable hands, Hadaya continues to thrive.”

body and movement and tail carriage, arch necked and poll, expressive eye. Fine, fine skin. And exquisite quality of refinement through muzzle. We almost can’t use clippers on her.” Jaleen has not just developed the historic Hadaya lines. “I have added some bloodlines into the core mix that have caught my eye and heart, both in the Dahmah and Saqlawiah strains. The PVA Kariim blood is being slowly infused through a few of his daughters. In addition, I hope to bring in this blood through PVA Kariim’s full sister, so it can be used through the Saqlawiah tail-female line as well. I feel it important to bring the Saqlawiah bloodlines in and am doing this with a few mares.” Most of the mares of the Saqlawiah Jedraniah strain trace to Moniet El Nefous through the mare Shafali. “Shafali goes back in her tail-female line to a mare named Farsa. We bred and owned Farsa, but did not have her bloodlines in our current herd. This was an opportunity to weave some of the originals back into our herd, and she has given me two wonderful daughters, Hadaya Safiya (by Ansata Qasim), 2012, and Hadaya Johannah (by Ansata Nile Commander), 2013. Another branch goes through the Babson import *Maaroufa to Bint Yamama. “SH Safina (PVA Kariim x MB Pashata) brings both that great PVA Kariim blood and the terrific movement of this tail-female line,” continues Jaleen. “All the trainers who see her and her daughter want them. And then there is Maar

Jamana MH and her 2013 daughter Hadaya Maar Jassirah (by Imperial Al Kamar). This powerful blood has great structure, superb movement, and that indescribable desert look.” Hadaya may also have the largest breeding herd of straight Egyptian Kuhaylah Rodania mares in the United States. Half are through the Riyala branch and half are through the Risala branch. “I found myself time after time being drawn to the Kuyhalah Rodania lines without knowing it. We have three main families here: Merjana (*Messaoud x Maalaka), a mare bred by Gleannloch from whom I now have sons and a daughter; Nefersiri (Ansata Sirius x Rashaikha) and her daughters and granddaughters; and the daughters and grandget of MB Sahammena (Tammen x Egyptian Saphire).

“Then I just fell in love with Duquesah KA (Marquis I x Ruminaja Sonbolah). She is a great-great-granddaughter of *Serenity Sonbolah, and she has all of those qualities: great structure, terrific movement, smart, and upright carriage.” The Kuhaylah Rodania group has produced a second favorite of Jaleen’s: a filly by Kaliph MH and out of Qadar Nile Fahari. “She is just phenomenal, with upright neck and the break at the poll I want, plus the quality of body, temperament and engine. I will have to be patient while she matures, but I’m very excited about her.” Some would be surprised not to find a group of stallions standing at Hadaya, but Jaleen points out that is neither a tradition at Hadaya nor where she wanted to put her energy while building a mare band. “My parents didn’t really stand stallions. We used a lot of outside stallions, *Ramses Fayek, *Ansata Ibn Halima, Ansata Halim Bey, Nabiel, *Farazdac. The exceptional stallions we bred were usually sold. Top: SH Safiina (PVA Kariim x MB Pashata by Imperial Saturn), 2006 mare, produced a filly in 2013 and a colt in 2014. She traces to the Babson import *Maaroufa.

“Our family was thrilled when Hadaya El Tareef (Imperial Imdal x Hadaya NMerytaten), a 1986 grey stallion, was named U.S. and Canadian National Top Ten and Egyptian Event Supreme Champion Stallion for his owners. “When I first came back to the farm, I was fortunate to be able to breed to

“Qasim sired one of my favorites, Hadaya Nile Blessing, and my first Shafali daughter, Hadaya Safiya. “He is also the sire of Ansata Nile Falcon, out of a Jewel great-granddaughter. Falcon is an incredibly kind, gentle stallion, with beautiful ear set. He is smart and willing; I taught him to jump in hand during a walk around the farm while teasing mares. He has a long, beautiful hip — my mother would love it — and nice coupling. He did a great job pasture breeding while leased to Wadi Al Nasmet and had six babies there. He is available to a farm where he can contribute structure, type, and great temperament. “I have nine of the 2012, 2013, and 2014 fillies from Ansata Nile Commander. They are just getting old enough to evaluate. He did an exceptional job with several of the Kuhaylah mares, especially Qadar Nile Fahari, Qadar Bint Nadir, and Nefersiri. I am partial to his 2014 filly from Qadar Nile Fahari right now, and to Nefersiri’s.” Jaleen rode and competed in saddleseat, so a “good engine” is important. Her latest lease fulfills all her requirements. “Most recently I leased Kaliph MH from Jody Cruz,” Jaleen continues. “My parents knew and respected Dr. Felino Cruz of Rancho Bulakenyo. With the addition of the mares Maar Jamana and Kamaara MH and the lease of Kaliph MH from Jody Cruz, I sometimes tell him, ‘Your dad and my mom are scheming.’” Jody recalls the long association between Rancho Bulakenyo and Hadaya. “Decades ago my Dad, Dr. Felino Cruz, was friends with Jaleen’s parents. I remember him telling me how he tried to buy mares from them, but was unsuccessful. Of course, he was trying to buy their foundation mares! He loved their horses for their type, conformation, and overall quality. I am sure our folks are all observing and judging how the next generations are coming along.

Collaboration with other breeders, and their feedback, is critical for Jaleen. Recently, Keri Wright, Janice Bush, and Becky Rogers visited. Says Jaleen, “They were really taken with Hadaya Nile Jewel — they couldn’t keep their eyes off of her. But more than their appreciation of my horses, their visit reminds me that the Arabian horse has introduced me to some of my best and dearest friends — people I would never have met had it not been for the horses. All of us who know and love the Egyptian Arabian horse make up a worldwide circle of friends. On a personal level with the horses, they bring me to a quiet and peaceful place and are very calming. In addition, there is nothing more rewarding than gaining the trust of a horse that once had a hard time trusting and having him open his heart and soul to you. They are honest and pure and never have a hidden agenda. This is sometimes a rare quality to find. “When I got back into breeding less than 10 years ago, I went back and forth on how much could I do and which direction I wanted to go. The breeding program I’ve put together is just starting to blossom. I will probably breed 7-10 foals each year. I see the babies and have a good idea what they will become — but it will be five to eight years before you really know. When I think about Hadaya Nisrs Kemal, my 2014 miracle baby, I realize all her grandparents were foaled between 1967 and 1998. It is humbling and makes me realize how important it is to breed the best and pass them on.

“I would like to be known for preserving and improving the bloodlines that I am working with, for breeding a horse with balanced body, great tail/snort/blow and movement, sound legs, beautiful neck and throatlatch with a consistent type, expressive eye, and beautiful and kind temperament. I would hope that you would love to look at them and love to ride them. There are a handful of other qualities that I would add in there ideally, but those are the ‘biggies’ to me.” There is a secret oasis for Egyptian Arabians in upper Wisconsin. It is called Hadaya Arabians, and you should visit.

Dennis Fournier bought a colt many years ago from Hadaya, but it is a more recent event that he says is typical of Jaleen’s touch with horses. “I saw her at the Event a few years ago. She complimented me on the colt I was showing, and told me she had, within a few minutes, taught him a trick. We went to the stall and, on cue, he stuck out his tongue to be scratched. Today, he will still do that. Jaleen has a way with horses — all horses — and I’m thrilled to see Hadaya in her hands.”
