Arabian Racing’s Allure by Denise Hearst, Publisher

F

or some of us, the best ticket in racing is the one that gets you into the saddling paddock – arm’s length from the incandescent athletes, so full of fire. Follow them to the track where, in Europe, especially, they aren’t ponied and you can watch them loose themselves, spilling a little of their nervous energy on the way to the starting gates. It’s an intoxicating moment. Emmanuel Cessac of Haras de Thouars finds excitement in the growing international nature of Arabian racing, “Arabian races are now international for elite horses,” he says. “This is a great honor for Arabians and a good showcase for the sport and its many passionate actors. Diversity of countries and performance levels lend a true richness to Arabian breeding. I go to many international race meets every year, and it is always magical to see the horses coming into the presentation ring.” Guy de Fontaines (see his interview on page 18) describes the thrill of Arabian racing another way. “It’s the rhythmic thumping of the hoofbeats expressing the power of the horse’s gallop, coupled with lightness off the ground which makes the horse appear to fly. “When racing, it is the beautiful struggle to get to post first. That is something you cannot force a horse to do. A horse who races well loves to run. The jockey’s role is to steer him well and give him the chance to express his quality and fighting spirit.” Perhaps it is that spirit coupled with the majesty of the Arabian that compels us, joining us in this warm fraternity of racing enthusiasts. We are proud to present our 7th Annual Arabian Racing Yearbook – the only publication to print the results of all the Group and Graded PA Stakes races from around the world. We owe a debt of gratitude to our advertisers who make our efforts to promote Arabian racing, and the Arabian breed, possible.

erfection. That was the way Quick Sand AA went through 2018, winning all six of his starts in the nation’s toughest races to rise to the top of American Arabian racing. With an unbeaten campaign, the five-year-old Quick Sand AA (Burning Sand x Triumphs Silkie by Seyvilla Triumph) has left no suspense for the Darley Award announcement for the 2018 Horse of the Year at the St. Regis Houston Hotel in Texas on March 23. Quick Sand was an easy choice for voters when ballots were distributed in January, a standout for 2018. Owned by Joe and Betty Gillis, Quick Sand, running at distances ranging from seven furlongs, or 1,400 meters, to 1¼ miles, or 2,000 meters, exclusively on dirt, won important stakes at Sam Houston Race Park in Texas, Santa Anita in California, Delaware Park, Churchill Downs in Kentucky, and

Lone Star Park between Dallas and Fort Worth. Throughout the season, Quick Sand developed a patient style. He never had an early lead, but was always prominent by early stretch. “Every time he ran, he got a little bit better,” said trainer Jerenesto Torrez. Adds Joe Gillis, “He’s responding to training. Jerenesto has done a wonderful job. The light bulb has come on. He used to be a speed horse. We’ve converted him into a distance horse.” Quick Sand did share his first win of 2018, in the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Stakes at Sam Houston last March, when he finished in a dead-heat with Easter Man, also owned by Joe and Betty Gillis and trained by Torrez. The pair finished three-quarters of a length ahead of RB Nash. Those three were the dominant older horses of the spring of 2018. A month later at Santa Anita, Quick Sand won

before fading from contention. A year later, Coa had a more patient mount with Quick Sand. Quick Sand was fifth in the field of nine for the first half of the race and steadily improved position before taking the lead in the stretch. Quick Sand won by a head over Quick And Rich, who finished a clear second. Throughout the season, Torrez noticed

“This horse is so special,” Risenhoover said after the race. “I let him do his own thing, and when we turned for home, he kicked into gear.” Torrez described the win at Churchill Downs as Quick Sand’s biggest race. “He won by nine and she didn’t have to ask him a lot.” Six weeks later, Quick Sand won his final start of 2018 in the Grade 3 Lone Star Arabian Stallion Stakes at a mile.

a renewed level of confidence from Quick Sand. “As the horse got a little bit older, he realized he can do better,” Torrez said. “He’s an easy going horse, and we enjoy him.” Quick Sand followed the stakes win at Delaware with his most emphatic victory of the year in the President of the UAE Cup at Churchill Downs on September 29. With Risenhoover back aboard, Quick Sand closed from fourth in a field of nine to take a commanding lead in the stretch. He won by nine lengths over Madjikman, with Easter Man in third.

Quick Sand was in front a little earlier than normal — on the turn — and was tested to the wire by stablemate Easter Man before winning by three-quarters of a length. In his six starts in 2018, Quick Sand AA earned $185,340, by far the highest earnings of the season for an American runner — and yet another measure of what is needed to earn Horse of the Year.

the first Grade 1 race of his career in the $114,000 HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Stakes at Santa Anita. The race was held on the same program as the Santa Anita Derby, which was won by Justify, who later won the Triple Crown. The Sheikha Fatima Stakes was Quick Sand’s richest win of the year. He closed from ninth in a field of 12 under jockey Sasha Risenhoover to win by a neck over Easter Man, who was a neck in front of RB Nash in a thrilling finish. “When I asked, he gave me everything down the lane,” Risenhoover said. The race was an ideal promotion for Arabian racing before a large crowd of Thoroughbred fans. Quick Sand’s victory at Santa Anita was Risenhoover’s second stakes win on an Arabian in her career. They were reunited later in the year. During the summer, Keiber Coa rode Quick Sand to two victories at Delaware Park — an allowance race in late July that was a prep for the Grade 1 Delaware Park Arabian Handicap Classic, a $50,000 race in late August. The Delaware Park Arabian Classic was once the premier race of the year for older horses. It still holds an important status, but the Sheikha Fatima Stakes and $100,000 President of the United Arab Emirates Cup at Churchill Downs are more valuable. What sets the Delaware Park Arabian Classic apart from other important races for older horses is the race distance of 1 1/4 miles, a true test of stamina. Quick Sand was last of eight in the 2017 Delaware Park Arabian Classic, racing near the front for the first six furlongs

A VISIT WITH GUY DE FONTAINES of France Galop

by Denise Hearst

Guy de Fontaines is well-known in Arabian racing and show circles. For France Galop — the organizer of major horse events in France – Guy is in charge of Racehorse Ownership Development, and flat and jump racing. This encompasses Thoroughbreds mainly but also AQPS (French chasers) AngloArabs and Arabian ownerships. He explains, “My job is to work on the owner loyalty programs, entertainment and hospitality on racecourses, stud farm visits, visit at the gallops, etc., and promoting racehorse ownership via the development of mentor operations in the regions and incentives to help our professionals promote their activities and products on race days at our Parisian racecourses.” Guy is also in demand as a suave and multi-lingual horse show announcer. We visited with him recently to hear his thoughts on the state of the sport and his long career with horses. Please give us some background on your role and responsibilities for France Galop, the organizer of major horse events in France. Does your work span all breeds and disciplines? I am presently in charge of Racehorse Ownership Development in France and for flat and jump racing for France Galop, the organizer of major horse events in France. This encompasses Thoroughbreds mainly, but also AQPS (French chasers) Anglo-Arabs and Arabian ownerships. What drew you to Arabian horses in general, and to Arabian racing in particular? What is it that you love the most about Arabian horses? My interest in Arabians began in the early 1970s mainly via my background as a rider of Anglos for show jumping and eventing, and my childhood Connemara pony who was one-quarter Arabian. My interest in racing is owed to my admiration and fondness for the Thoroughbred. What I like about the Arabian is his intelligence, charisma, suppleness, overall balance, and readiness to work for his rider. You are the rare person with extensive participation in both racing and the show arena, where you lend your announcing talents

to the Arabian World Championships in Paris every year. What appeals to you about the Arabian show world? I started as a student helping out in the organization of the Paris show back in 1974. It was the only international Arabian show at the time, and I was asked to be the commentator. I used to love the shows as they were the only place to see the best breeding animals. Nowadays it is very different. The showmanship aspect has taken over and the breed is being modified to suit fashion. I am a professional commentator for shows and other equine events, but I profoundly deplore the evolution of Arabian showing. Has the upswing in high profile races in France and other places, such as the Qatar Arabian World Cup or the Qatar International in England, led to an increase in interest in owning and breeding Arabians in France? Likewise, the presence of Arabian racing has grown substantially in France in the last decade, notably at major venues on important race days. Are there any changes to the program in 2019? What do you look forward to in 2019, particularly involving Arabian racing?

Qatar Saint Cloud trophies. And the Breeders Challenge Sheikh Zayed bin Nahyan Classic (2,200m) will be run in Bordeaux later to allow recuperation for horses having run the World Cup at Longchamp in Paris.

Guy and the Arabian racehorse El Zeer, bred and owned by HH Sharif Nasser bin Jamil of Jordan.

If I had a magic wand, I would only race Arabians on very short, like a quarter mile, or very long distances. One major challenge we face in France is adjusting to unfavorable Paris mutuel wagering return, meaning that Arabian racing will be ever more relying on its very supportive sponsors to maintain its prize money level. That being said, the French racing Arabian industry is still thriving with 46 active sires and a very good Arqana sales return. All that put together makes France the leading country for Arabian racing. The French Arabian Racing Association, AFAC, is actively promoting the sport and especially sponsorship development. The 2019 Arabian racing calendar has only seen slight changes, like the adjustment of the date of the Group 2 Breeders Challenge sprint race, not to clash with the Jewel Crown Group 1 race run at Abu Dhabi. Both Breeders Cup Challenge Group 2 races have become prep races for the

How would you assess the Arabian bloodstock market in France? The Arabian bloodstock market was nonexistent up to the mid-1970s. French Arabian bloodlines were bred in the southwest of France primarily to bring the necessary Arab blood percentages into the Anglo-Arab racehorses. So they were bred for speed and had already developed a particular phenotype. That was the reason WAHO only very reluctantly accepted the French stud book. When Arab racing later developed, it became evident that classicallybred Arabians could not compete against them. The great surge in the market started in the early ‘80s after the famous Kempton Park race sponsored by Dubai ignited the interest of Middle Eastern magnates in the French Arab racer. The market is still very good because of the international performance leadership of French Arabians and their reputation in the Middle East. But, it had reached a peak back in the end of the ‘90s. Nowadays, most sheikhs and princes have developed professional breeding operations in Guy and Winnie, an Anglo-Arabian eventer by France and Great Djecko AA out of Oureah AR by Ghalbane AR.

Britain primarily. Therefore, only the very best are still exported to Arab countries. What is your best pitch for getting people involved with Arabian racing? What should breed organizations or jockey clubs need to do in order to help the sport grow? In France, new owners usually start with Thoroughbreds. Word of mouth could bring them to Arabian racing. What I could say to a potential new owner is that he can hope for a good ROI on his purchase if it is top class. If not, the Arabian can nevertheless race longer than a Thoroughbred, and since prize money is high in France, he can still hope for a good return in the long run. Also, the owner can develop a lasting relationship with his racehorses. It is important to choose a horse with a very consistent dam line. Developing mentor programs with incentives for owners who would bring in new investors, like what is done in the U.S., is the best a jockey club can do to develop ownership. Maintaining purses as high as possible is also a good incentive. The number of races is also important to give an owner the maximum chances of winning. A well-devised program with opportunities for all ages, distances, and aptitudes is another essential aspect of development. If you had a magic wand, what three changes would you make to the world of racing? If I had a magic wand, I would only race Arabians on very short, like a quarter mile, or very long distances. Miles, up to classical 2,400m distances, are for the Thoroughbred who has been chiseled by centuries of selection for speed and stamina. The classic Arabian is a small horse with a lot of stamina, and he is good for short bursts of speed as well. Let’s not forget that he was chiseled by desert conditions and used for raiding and surprise attacks. Longer distances are Guy's new Thoroughbred mare also attractive because Myval by Myboycharlie out of a Manduro daughter. spectators see the horses

in action much longer which adds to the fun. That would bring the classic Arab horse back into the picture for punters and the general public! Do you own any horses yourself? My last Arabian died on happy retirement some 20 years ago. I had given up riding because of my job promoting the French horse industry abroad and now for France Galop. But I’m back in the saddle since last year and currently training my newly purchased three-year-old Thoroughbred mare with a vision to have her either show jump or event with my 14-year-old daughter. She has a very good pedigree, being a Myboycharlie daughter out of a Manduro mare — I may breed from her later. Please share with us a couple of the greatest moments you have witnessed in Arabian racing. Same question for the Arabian showring. The Qatar Arabian World Cup is certainly the greatest Arabian race I saw. It always crowned a top racing Arabian, like No Risk Al Maury, Sylvine Al Maury and General (by Amer), owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani, who was one of the best I saw, but there were many others. It's a fact that so far there hasn't been an Arabian Man O' War or Secretariat. The greatest moment I’ve witnessed in the showring was the championship win of the Polish mare Pilarka in Paris. I’ve seen many a top champion but never a mare quite like this one. The sight of this mare just floating gracefully at the trot and standing majestically, staring at the crowd at the standstill, was far from the frantic running around the ring with helpers waving plastic bags, together with stereotypical poses that we see nowadays. Sorry for being a bit severe. But I like to see the personality in a horse, not standardized posing. Looking back on your career with horses, what brings you the most pride? I would pride myself on being considered a horseman. But I know it is a never-ending endeavor. The modest equestrian successes I managed to achieve with the very difficult horses I’ve ridden and who taught me the most, have been the most gratifying. Also having managed His Majesty King Hussein’s private stables and trained Princess Haya in show jumping. The years I spent in Jordan I’ll remember as being my happiest so far. This I owe Princess Alia Al Hussein.

TOP INTERNATIONAL A Tie at the Top

Tied for top international racehorse are Fazza Al Khalediah (Jalnar Al Khalidiah x Assma Al Khalediah by Amer), left, owned by Polska AKF Sp. Zoo, and Gazwan (Amer x Arc de Ciel by Djendel), owned by Al Shahania Stud, Qatar, right.

hat started in relative anonymity in Poland ended with triumph on the world stage. Arabian racing fans could be forgiven if they were unaware of Fazza Al Khalediah at the start of 2018. By the end of the European season in October, Fazza Al Khalediah had made an impression on the sport. Fazza Al Khalediah won the $1.15 million Qatar Arabian World Cup at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris on October 7 in a 69-1 upset, adding to stakes wins earlier in the year in Poland and Italy. For his success in Paris, Fazza Al Khalediah shared the title as the top-rated Arabian racehorse of 2018 along with Gazwan, a star in Qatar in the spring when he won the Qatar Gold Sword. Fazza Al Khalediah and Gazwan were given ratings of 128 for their respective major stakes wins. Gazwan is a familiar name on year-end rankings. He ranked second on the 2017 list, with a rating of 125, and was expected to be among the leading runners of 2018. In contrast, Fazza Al Khalediah’s inclusion could not have been envisioned at the start of the year. The classifications were compiled by the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing’s Authority Pattern Race and Handicapper Committee. The group reviewed races from Europe for the 2018 calendar year and from the Arabian Gulf countries from October 2017 to May 2018. Among four-year-old and older horses, there were 58 runners with ratings of 110 or higher. Among three-year-olds, 20 runners received ratings of 105 or more.

Fazza Al Khalediah (Jalnar Al Khalidiah x Assma Al Khalediah by Amer) recorded the greatest upset in the history of the Qatar Arabian World Cup, run at Longchamp Racecourse. Trained by Michal Borkowski for owners Polska AKF Sp. Zoo, Fazza Al Khalediah had won the Group 1 President of the United Arab Emirates Cup in Milan, Italy, in July. A second-place finish in a Group 3 race in Poland in August ended a nine-race winning streak that began at the start of Fazza Al Khalediah’s career. The August loss led him to be largely ignored by bettors in Paris. In the Qatar Arabian World Cup at 2,000 meters, or 1 ¼ miles on turf, Fazza Al Khalediah finished 2 ½ lengths in front of Khataab (Amer x Djelana by Al Sakbe). “The success is all down to the horse,” Borkowski said after the World Cup win. Khataab’s performance was worth a year-end rating of 123 for the 2018 season, good enough for sixth on the overall list. Gazwan (Amer x Arc de Ciel by Djendel) improved his overall standing in 2018 compared to 2017 when he was a joint second with a rating of 125. Gazwan, who won the 2017 Qatar Arabian World Cup at Chantilly, France, for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani and trainer Julian Smart, was fourth in the 2018 Qatar Arabian World Cup. Gazwan was in peak form early in 2018, winning the Group 1 Emir’s Sword and Qatar Gold Sword in consecutive starts in Qatar in February and April. Gazwan did not race during the summer and finished third in his comeback race — the Group 1 Prix Dragon at Chantilly in September.

RACEHORSES Sheikh Mohammed and Smart had the three top-rated horses for the 2017 season with Ebraz (127) and Gazwan and Reda (125). For the 2018 season, they were also represented in the top 10 with Ebraz (Amer x Massamarie by Tidjani), who ranked a joint fourth. In Qatar in early 2018, Ebraz was second in the Emir’s Sword and third in the Qatar Gold Sword. In Europe later in the year, Ebraz was second in the $524,000 Qatar International Trophy at a mile at Goodwood, England, in August and third in the Qatar Arabian World Cup. Ebraz tied for fourth with Muraaqib (Munjiz x Tashreefat by Bengali d’Albret), the winner of the Qatar International Trophy. In November, 2017, Muraaqib was promoted from second to first in the $1,398,270 Sheikh Zayed Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi after RB Burn was disqualified from first and placed second for causing interference in the race at 1,600 meters on turf, or a mile. The 2017 Sheikh Zayed Jewel Crown was considered in the 2018 rankings since the Middle East racing season stretches from November to early spring. Yazeed tied for fourth with a rating of 124 for the 2017 season and was alone in third-place on the 2018 list, with a rating of 127. Owned by Umm Qarn Racing, Yazeed was trained by Alban de Mieulle. Similar to Ebraz, Yazeed was active in the top races in Qatar and France in 2018. In Qatar, Yazeed was third in the Emir’s Sword and second in the Qatar Gold Sword. In France, Yazeed won the Prix Dragon — after a summer off — and was fifth in the Qatar Arabian World Cup. There were two American-bred

horses among the top 10 rated older horses — RB Burn (Majd Al Arab x Burnie Gee PW by Burning Sand) and TM Thunder Struck (Majd Al Arab x Bonnett by Burning Sand). The similarly-bred runners represent two highly successful breeders — Dianne Waldron of Florida and Todd Moak of Texas, respectively. RB Burn, owned by Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, earned his 122 rating for the Sheikh Zayed Jewel Crown in November, 2017, in which he was disqualified from first to second. TM Thunder Struck, owned by Umm Qarn, won consecutive starts in Qatar — the Group 2 Qatar National Day Trophy in December, 2017, and the Group 3 Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani Cup a month later. For the most part, the top of the list was a boys’ club. The exception was the four-year-old mare Al Shamoos (No Risk Al Maury x Hamiya by Al Hasim). Owned by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, Al Shamoos was given a 120 rating for her win in the Group 1 Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments at Longchamp in Paris on October 6, the world’s leading race for four-year-old fillies. Al Shamoos will figure prominently in the 2019 year-end rankings. She followed the win at Longchamp with a victory in the $1,362,397 Sheikh Zayed Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi on November 9, the world’s richest race for Arabians. The race was not included in the 2018 rankings, but will be part of the discussion for the 2019 scores. A R A B I A N R A C I N G Y E A R B O O K > 23 < W O R L D

In the Sheikh Zayed Jewel Crown, Al Shamoos beat Fazza Al Khalediah in his first start since the upset win in the Qatar Arabian World Cup. The top 10 older horses did not include any of the leading three-yearolds of 2017. For the 2018 season, Al Haffanah (Amer x Al Nachmiya by Azadi) was the the highest-rated three-year-old at 113, a mark achieved with a win in the Group 1 Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches at Saint-Cloud on October 5. Owned by Al Shaqab Racing and trained by Thomas Fourcy, Al Haffanah had only two starts in 2018, winning a minor race at La Teste, France, on August 1 in her debut. Of the top six three-year-olds of 2018, the two top-ranked runners were fillies. Moubna (Moubtassim x Naimah) was given a rating of 112. She won the Group 3 Grand Prix Le Prince Heritier Moulay El Hassan against older fillies and mares in Morocco on November 18. Moubna was the only three-year-old filly in the race, which was worth $94,537. Marid (TM Fred Texas x Al Dahma by Amer) was also given a rating of 112. He won two Group 1 races — the Al Rayyan Cup at Deauville, France, in August, and the Group 1 Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains for three-year-old males at Saint-Cloud in October. Interestingly, Rajeh was given a 114 rating for winning the 2017 Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains. As a fouryear-old in 2018, Rajeh earned a rating of 118, good enough to rank among the top 20 horses of the season. Steve Andersen is a correspondent for Daily Racing Form.

A VISIT WITH PHIL COLLINGTON 2018 Leading International Arabian Racehorse Trainer

our years ago, when Phil Collington began training 3 ARO Cup International Stakes at Windsor in May and Arabian racehorses for Shadwell Stud in Great Britain, Mith’haf Athbah (Amer x Karouj by Karmah), winner of his focus was on domestic racing. With time, the the Group 3 Clarendon Stakes at Newbury in August, with stable — and his goals — have grown more international. Shomoos Athbah in second. Collington, 40, had a career-best year in Britain in In 2017, Mith’haf Athbah won the Group 1 Sheikh Zayed 2018, leading the nation with 24 wins in Arabian races. Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup at Chelmsford City Racecourse A former jockey who grew up with a hunt background in not far from London. A year before, the stable had its first Leicestershire, Collington is eagerly anticipating the start of major success in France when Shadwell’s Jamaayil won the British Arabian racing season in early May. the Group 2 French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge Sprint at “We’ve got a good string, with a lot of young horses, Toulouse. A year later, Mith’haf Athbah won the same race. including 20 for Sheikh Hamdan,” he says. Collington has been allied with HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Shadwell Stud for more than 15 years. In the early 2000s, he joined Sheikh Hamdan’s trainer Gillian Duffield as a work rider, a job that led to his first experience with racing in Dubai. Through the years, Collington rose to assistant trainer while riding races, winning five Arabian racing titles in England. Collington was the regular work rider for such major runners as Kaolino (Dormane x Cary De Carrere SBFAR), winner of the $250,000 Kahayla Classic in 2004, and Madjani who won the same race in 2007. More than a decade later, Collington is still grateful for the experience gained in those years. “I had the best that Gill had,” he said. “When it was all happening, you didn’t always realize just how great the horses were — you’re caught up in the moment.” Duffield retired at the end of the 2015 season — she was a tough act to follow, having begun training for Sheikh Hamdan in 1987 and having more than 800 winners in Britain and nearly 200 in the United Arab Emirates. Collington and James Owen became the new trainers for Shadwell, and last year, Owen was second in the British trainer’s standings with 17 wins. Collington and Owen were the only trainers with double-digit winners. Collington has since expanded his list of clients to include Athbah Stud of Saudi Arabia, and last year, top : Radames (Kerbella x Mlaika by Dormane), owned by Sheikh Hamdan he had some of his greatest success with Athbah Stud was Collington's first Group 1 winner in his first season for Sheikh Hamdan. runners, including Shomoos Athbah (Burning Sand bottom : Mith’haf Athbah (Amer x Karouj by Karmah), owned by Athbah x Djanet Monlau by Dormane), winner of the Group Stud is another Group 1 winner for Collington.

Collington said it was difficult to name the best Arabian he has trained, but did nominate two exceptional runners. “In just three years of training it’s hard to pick one favorite horse, so I’d say two: Radames (Kerbella x Mlaika by Dormane), my first Group 1 winner in first season training and for Sheikh Hamdan, and then Mith'haf Athbah, mentioned earlier.” And the best he’s ever seen? “Of the horses not in our barn, I’d say best Arabian and most consistent would be Gazwan (Amer x Arc de Ciel).” Horses were never far from Collington in his youth. Collington’s father was involved with hunting, and Phillip had an interest in eventing as a young man. After college, he worked with a Thoroughbred racing stable near his home. “I got the racing bug,” he said. “I didn’t want to do anything else.” Collington later worked for prominent trainer Toby Balding, who had a flat and steeplechase stable. That led to involvement with trainer Emma Lavelle and with Arabian owners Michael and Tony Brunton as a jockey. “Arabians are so intelligent,” he says. “After starting out with Thoroughbred racehorses, I seemed to strike up a partnership with the Arabians as a rider at the time, which meant I was able to ride about 300 winners with them in total. To train Arabians you don’t always have to do everything differently than what you would with a Thoroughbred, but if an Arabian doesn’t want to go a particular way or place, you have to think carefully of a

solution rather than try to force them.” With the training stable now in its fourth year, the focus will be sending runners to continental Europe as well as races in Britain. The recent stakes wins in France have been joined by victories in Belgium, Italy and Saudi Arabia. This year, the stable will have approximately 26 runners. “I’d be happy if we hit 20 winners,” Phil said. “It was magic to get that far last year.” In the coming years, the stable could expand to race in the United Arab Emirates in the winter. With an emphasis on Arabian racing and strong prize money, particularly at Abu Dhabi Racecourse and Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, even a little success would be financially beneficial. “I do believe that Arabian racing today needs much more support from new ownership as it was previously very well supported with big field sizes. It does seriously need to be taken onto Thoroughbred cards to get the exposure. The distances an Arabian can run are very similar to a Thoroughbred. “The most exciting Arabian race I’ve ever seen was probably the Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi — Muraaqib and RB Burn nose to nose to the wire, and then dramatically, the race result overturned.” The President of the United Arab Emirates Cup at Churchill Downs in Kentucky in September is very much on Collington’s mind. “I’d love to have a runner in America,” he said. TEVIS CUP Endurance Ride

ARABIAN HORSE WORLD On July 28, 149 competitors left the starting line of the 63rd Western States 100-Mile Ride, better known as the Tevis Cup, with eagerness and trepidation of the trail that lay ahead; only 64 would complete. “The weather was brutal,” states Chuck Stalley, Ride Director of this annual endurance ride that starts in Truckee and ends in Auburn, California. “Not only was it hot, it was unusually humid. If that wasn’t bad enough, the air was smoky from the major fire 100 miles north (Carr Fire near Redding) and another 100 miles south.” The ride started at 5:15 a.m. The competitors left Robie Equestrian Park, near Truckee, where they gather and camp for the start of the event every year. They ride 13 miles to Squaw High Camp where water is available, as well as a veterinarian, if needed. Then, in another 8.5 miles, they are observed as they trot by, and veterinarians look for any lameness or problems with the horses. At Red Star Ridge, 28 miles, they have their first Gate-and-Go, a veterinary exam that must be passed before they may continue.

Win with mare leases from

THE LIFETIME LEADING BREEDER OF ARABIAN RACEHORSES IN USA With our overall ownership record, Cre Run has won over $2.5 million. As a breeder, Cre Run horses (which include Royal Atheena's bonus and horses bred in partnerships) have earned over $3.8 million. We are extremely proud of this success. Last year 15 runners bred by Cre Run graced the race courses in USA. This includes horses leased out or owned by others. These horses posted 15 wins, and each winner was out of a mare also produced by Cre Run - the history of our breeding success runs true year after year. Our name means “Creating Runners.” We plan to have ve 3-year-olds in 2020 to join our existing string and three 3-year-olds to come in 2021. We currently have 30 mares of breeding age, and many of these mares are available to lease. These proven mares give others a great opportunity to breed an excellent prospect without the cost of buying and owning. Don’t miss your chance...
