L
ast year about this time, I bet on the long shot to win at Santa Anita racetrack in California. To the utter disbelief of his owners/breeders Alan Kirshner and Deb Mihaloff, and even his trainer, Lynn Ashby, he led wire to wire to win (which meant I did, too!). That was the day that Thess Is Awesome (Dahess x In Awe by Monarch AH) won the $100,000 Darley Award Stakes, the richest win of his career. There, on that beautiful California spring afternoon, celebrating in the winners circle and watching the gleaming athletes coming and going, it felt like the best place on earth to be. And then there was Chantilly, France, last October, when, between the passing clouds and sunshine, we stood in awe as the great Al Mourtajez (Dahess x Arwa by Nuits St. George), the Grandes Écuries providing a majestic backdrop, galloped all alone across the finish line to win his second consecutive Qatar World Cup worth $1.1 million. There is nothing as exciting as watching a great horse run ... unless you own him, too. As Alan Kirshner once said, “We are dreamers; we love to create and win or we wouldn’t be in this business.” We dedicate this 5th annual Arabian Racing Yearbook and Stallion Guide to all you dreamers … and thank you for breeding the kind of horses that make us dream, too. — Denise Hearst, Publisher

DARLEY PREVIEW Top Ranked U.S. Racehorses
b y St e v e An d e r s e n
The Darley Awards, led by Lara Sawaya, the executive director of the Sheikh Mansoor Festival, left, is the highlight of the first of three days of activities. The following day, the $100,000 Darley Awards Arabian Stakes will be run for the second time at scenic Santa Anita, just outside of Los Angeles. The weekend will conclude with a dinner in Beverly Hills.
S
ome horses stand the test of time. When the nominees for the Darley Awards for outstanding Arabian racehorses of 2016 were announced in early February, there was a familiar name on the list. Paddys Day (Burning Sand x AK Loretta by *Virgule Al Maury) was nominated for the second consecutive year in the Horse of the Year and older male categories, titles he won in 2016. 16 b ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK b WORLD
The awards ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, on March 31. Overall, 19 horses were nominated in six categories — three-year-old males and females, four-year-old males and females, older horses and older mares. There were three nominees in all categories except for four-year-old fillies, which had four. Other nominees for Horse of the Year include RB Madymoiselle (Majd

Al Arab x *Frynch by Dormane) and Thess Is Awesome (Dahess x In Awe by Monarch AH). RB Madymoiselle is nominated for champion four-year-old filly, while Thess Is Awesome is among the finalists for champion older male. The advantage is probably with Paddys Day, owned by Scott and Lori Powell and trained by Scott Powell. He won five of eight starts and earned $176,367 during the season, the highest earnings of the year for an American-based horse. RB Madymoiselle was more active. She won six of 12 starts and earned $135,313. Thess Is Awesome had one win in six starts and earnings of $84,170. Paddys Day won major stakes at Sam Houston Race Park in Texas, Delaware Park, and Churchill Downs in Kentucky, and was second in stakes at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, California, and at Los Alamitos and Santa Anita in the Los
Angeles area. He was never worse than second through the season. His most emphatic win — and one that will weigh heavily on the minds of voters — was the $107,600 President of the United Arab Emirates Cup at Churchill Downs on September 24. Paddys Day drew away in the stretch of the race at 1 1/16 miles to win by 8 ¼ lengths over Thess Is Awesome. RB Madymoiselle was third, beaten by 12 lengths, in the field of nine. For Paddys Day, the President of the UAE Cup was his third race on consecutive Saturdays at Delaware Park, Los Alamitos, and Churchill Downs in September. Scott Powell said Paddys Day thrived on the activity, and showed his durability. “They say you can’t run back-to-back-to-back,” Powell said after the win at Churchill Downs. “You can. You have to build them up in the off-season to handle it.” Paddys Day raced from early March to late September in the United States, and did not always win the biggest races. Thess Is Awesome beat Paddys Day in the $100,000 Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Award Stakes at Santa Anita Park last April, a race held in conjunction with the events of the Darley Awards weekend. Thess Is Awesome led throughout and prevailed by 1 ¼ lengths over Paddys Day at odds of 46-1 for owners Alan Kirshner and Deb Mihaloff and trainer Lynn Ashby. Paddys Day lost two more races through the year, both in California to Sand Victor — the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan Arabian Cup at Pleasanton in July and a race with the same name at Los Alamitos in September. Sand Victor is a nominee for champion older male. 17 b ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK b WORLD

Second place money earner RB Madymoiselle (Majd Al Arab x *Frynch by Dormane), owned by RoseBrook Farm and trained by Scott Powell.
Kirshner and Mihaloff, who have been stalwarts in Arabian racing for decades, appreciated the magnitude of a stakes win at Santa Anita. “I was dreaming that it would happen,” Kirshner said in the winner’s circle that afternoon. “This is a big-time event.” Thess Is Awesome raced four more times through the year and was never worse than third, including a third to Paddys Day and RB Madymoiselle in the $51,000 Delaware Classic Handicap in September. Paddys Day had one start overseas in 2016, finishing seventh in the $1.28 million Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi on November 13. Sand Victor finished tenth, while Thess Is Awesome was last of 16. RB Madymoiselle raced for owner and breeder Dianne Waldron and her family through their RoseBrook Farm. Scott Powell trained RB Madymoiselle for most of her year. Similar to Paddys Day, RB Madymoiselle was a very busy filly, particularly in late summer and early fall. From August 20 to October 1, she ran six times at four tracks — Delaware Park, Los Alamitos, Churchill Downs, and

Retama Park, near San Antonio. In that span, she was never worse than third and won three stakes — the $30,000 Delaware Park Arabian Derby against males, the $45,125 Buzz Brauninger Distaff against fillies and mares, and the $21,000 Texas Arabian Oaks at Retama Park for four-year-old fillies. “She’s been all over the place,” Waldron said last fall. RB Madymoiselle ended the year with a win in the $30,000 Shadwell Arabian Stallions Texas Distaff Stakes at Lone Star Park near Dallas in early November, for her fifth stakes win of the year. “She’s run hard and gives her all every time,” Waldron said after the Texas Distaff Stakes. 2016 California Horse of the Year Sand Victor (Burning Sand x *Vague De Gemme), the grey, on his way to winning the Diamond Jewel of the Triple Crown Races at Los Alamitos.
A state program for owners, breeders, and stallion owners This program is provided by state law to promote the horse racing industry in California. Owners, breeders, and sire owners of Cal-Bred horses share a percentage of the state-designated money each year. ARAC was successful in introducing legislation with the State of California to bring Arabian Cal-Bred awards in line with those paid out to other racing breeds.
Extra cash awards are generated by monies wagered on the races. Each time a Registered Cal-Bred Arabian finishes first or second in a race in California, the owner, breeder and sire owner earn money. This money is distributed on a yearly basis with 55% to the breeder, 20% to the owner, 15% to the stallion owner, and to promote the Cal-Bred Awards Incentive Program.

A CONVERSATION
with Thomas Fourcy Al Shaqab Racing —Ecurie Haras Bouquetot Sas
b y St e v e An d e r s e n a n d D e n i s e He a r s t
Perhaps it’s no surprise that Al Mourtajez was a
Trainer Thomas Fourcy and family with Al Mourtajez (Dahess x Arwa by Nuits St Georges), leading international Arabian racehorse for 2016, owned by Al Shaqab Racing.
somewhat cantankerous three-year-old, before his career began. What he has done on racecourses in Qatar and Europe in the last few years has shown how tough he is. In January, Al Mourtajez became the first horse to be honored as the top-rated runner in consecutive seasons in year-end rankings reflecting most of the 2016 season. To clinch his status, Al Mourtajez won the Qatar Arabian World Cup at Chantilly for the second consecutive year in October. A third attempt at the Qatar Arabian World Cup is planned this year, which will be the last for Al Mourtajez before he is sent to stud. A colt who was tough to handle early in his career has settled into a brilliant racehorse. In this wide-ranging interview, Thomas Fourcy discusses Al Mourtajez’s racing career, and the goals for 2017.
Al Mourtajez is something of an ambassador for Arabian racing. Do you think he has helped raise the profile of Arabian racing in Europe? He has been so consistent and is often the pick of the fans. Yes, I sincerely think that Al Mourtajez is a reference in the Arabian racing world. He was so consistent since day one, in his performance as well as the way he gallops. He has “everything” which makes him a very good horse: class, spirit, physique, and a warrior temperament. Everyone in the Arabian world enjoys seeing such a horse on the racetracks. How was the horse acquired by Al Shaqab Racing? Everything started when His Excellency Sheikh Joaan purchased Al Nachmiya at the Saint Cloud Arqana Sale in October 2011, the day before the Gr.1 Arabian race for three-year-old

fillies. She won in pure class and His Excellency was so happy that he decided to visit the farm where she was bred, at Hassan Mousli’s stud. His Excellency went in the Charente-Maritime region and saw a group of yearlings, including Al Mourtajez. H.E. Sheikh Joann was seduced by some of the yearlings and decided to invest in Mr. Mousli’s homebred yearling crop. This is how he became the new owner of this fantastic colt. Is there anything about his pedigree that made him appealing at the start? Al Mourtajez has a very good pedigree, everything to make him a good horse. His dam was consistent in her production, and gave birth to valuable horses. His sire made a change in bloodlines; a successful match! What has Al Mourtajez been doing in December and January after his 2016 season? Over the 2016-2017 off season, Al Mourtajez stayed in our yard. We had a special mental program for him. On Royan La Palmyre track, we have training gallops but also tracks and paths in the woods. He’s a seven-year-old in 2017. Will he have a similar campaign from past seasons, and, if so, what will be the first goals in Europe?

Al Mourtajez the winner of the $1 million Qatar Arabian World Cup in 2015 and 2016.
His 2017 season program is yet to be defined. It will depend on His Excellency’s choice, first of all, and the horse himself. We would love to see him race again this year of course, and try to aim for a third World Cup! What factors contributed to his consistency in 2016, a season that saw him win four consecutive Group 1 races in England and France? The colt reached maturity at the end of his five-year-old season I think. A lot of Arabian horses can be quite late types. Was there a single race that stands out as a highlight, perhaps winning the Qatar Arabian World Cup at Chantilly? The race I really cherish is his first success in the Qatar Arabian World Cup at Longchamp. Al Mourtajez was a tough horse to train at the beginning, very delicate with lots of strength, that even he could not manage! To win this race with such a horse was really joyful and a great achievement for the whole team! Will 2017 be his last year on the track? Yes, 2017 will surely be his last season on the track. A stallion career is logically planned for the colt. The Arabian breeding world is waiting for him and he should have a very nice book of 57 b ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK b WORLD
A CONVERSATION WITH THOMAS FOURCY mares. According to his inherent qualities, he should make a contribution to the Arabian breed. Any conclusions about the loss in the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi in November? Does that provide a concern of any sort? His performance at Abu Dhabi was not, in my opinion, a race to remember for this horse. Racing rhythms over there are higher than in France, or even Europe. Al Mourtajez is a horse who likes to dominate the event with his classy pace and he got lost straight from the start. He was 200 percent ready for the Arabian World Cup at Chantilly and the close trip to Abu Dhabi may have been a bit too much. This performance does not take any of the colt qualities away of course, he is not a sprinter, that’s all! He was very good as far back as his four-yearold season in 2014, his first full year on the track and the season he won stakes at Deauville and Toulouse. Has he changed in recent seasons? No, nothing has changed, his physical maturity helped him settle his supremacy. I personally think that he was at his best as a five-year-old and even better at six.
He may be a lion on the track but Al Mourtajez is a lamb at home — enjoying all the attention Thomas and his sons bestow on him,
Physically and mentally, what are his best attributes? His best assets are his warrior mindset and his out of range strength. He does not need anyone during his races. He has such action that when the other horses do two strides he only has to make one over the same ground. He has a great shoulder and a powerful rear end. He is a non-standard horse and I am very proud of having been able to work next to such a horse, and as a trainer for Al Shaqab Racing. On a day-to-day basis, what is he like to train, and “live with”? He is a horse who was very difficult to handle early, as a threeyear-old. As I said before, he could not handle his strength and was kind of worried about the surroundings (environment, rider, etc.). It took us a lot of time to gain his confidence and when he turned four he started to be more and more quiet, and he actually understood what we were expecting of him. He is a colt but this has never affected his temperament and behavior with the other horses. Nothing bothers him. He is very sweet and appealing. He knows who is who, and my kids love petting him and giving him carrots! And I can assure you that Al Mourtajez loves it too! He is with us for more than four years now and he is part of the family, he is our sweetheart, our blue-eyed boy! 58 b ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK b WORLD

l Mourtajez is redefining brilliance in Arabian racehorses. In January, Al Mourtajez (Dahess x Arwa by Nuits St. Georges) was honored as the top-rated older Arabian by the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authority’s Pattern Race and Handicapping Committee for achievements in the 2016 racing season. It was familiar territory. Al Mourtajez received the same honor for the 2015 season when he was awarded a rating of 130 points. In 2016, he received a record rating of 134, the highest in the brief history of the ratings, which were launched after the 2011 racing season. By comparison, previous top ranked horses were No Risk Al Maury (128) in 2011, Mkeefa (126) in 2012, Tabarak and Mushrae (126) in 2013, and Djainka des Forges and Al Tair (124) in 2014. The rankings were released in midJanuary and reflect racing results from Nov. 8, 2015 to April 7, 2016 in the Middle East, and from Feb. 14, 2016 through Nov. 20 for European and other countries in the IFAHR pattern race calendar. Using those dates, the committee did not consider the results of the $1.27 million Sheikh Zayed Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 13, 2016, a race in which Al Mourtajez finished sixth, ending a four-race winning streak in Group 1 races. Yes, Al Mourtajez is beatable — just not very often. Owned by Al Shaqab Racing and trained by Thomas Fourcy (see our interview with him on page 112), Al Mourtajez won four of five starts in the period used to

determine the rankings. He began the year with a third-place finish in the $1 million Emir’s Sword in Qatar in February and then reeled off consecutive wins in four Group 1 races — the Qatar Coupe d’ Europe des Chevaux Arabes at Deauville, France, in May, the $520,000 Qatar International Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse in England in July, the Prix Dragon at Chantilly, France in September and the $1.1 million Qatar Arabian World Cup at Chantilly on October 2. Al Mourtajez, who raced as a six-year-old in 2015, overwhelmed the competition during the winning streak. He won at Deauville by five lengths, by eight at Goodwood and by seven and 4 ½ in starts at Chantilly. No one could get close to him in the European portion of his season, and he always ran against top competition. He won at distances ranging from 1,600 to 2,000 meters, or a mile to a mile and a quarter. Al Mourtajez’s record rating produced the widest gap to the other leading runners. Gazwan, Manark and Thakif tied for second at 123. The rest of the runners in the top 10 were Mehdaaf Athbah and Tayf at 122, AF Mathmoon at 121, and Assy, Majeed and TM Thunder Struck at 120. Arguably, Al Mourtajez’s win in the Qatar Arabian World Cup pushed his rating to the record figure. The race drew Europe’s top field of Arabians, including Mehdaaf Athbah, Tayf and Gazwan, who were second through fourth. The Qatar Arabian World Cup drew a strong field. Of the 15 runners, six were rated in the top 25 in the year-end ratings. Al Mourtajez’s comprehensive win in the race at 2,000 meters left Fourcy slightly stunned. “It’s incredible,” he said after the race. “The more he races, the better he gets. He is a champion, a horse above normal. I don’t have enough good things to say about this horse.”
The Qatar Arabian World Cup was run on the same program as the $5.3 million Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for Thoroughbreds, the richest race in Europe. The races were run at Chantilly in 2016 while Longchamp Racecourse on the west side of Paris undergoes a renovation to its grandstand. Gazwan, Manark and Thakif each made their mark through the world in late 2015 and 2016, but their ratings were a reflection of what they accomplished in the Middle East, the committee noted. Gazwan (Amer x Arc de Ciel by Djendel) beat Al Mourtajez in the Emir’s Sword in February, 2016, his final win of the year for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar and trainer Julian Smart. Through the season, Gazwan was later second to TM Thunder Struck in the Group 2 Qatar Gold Sword in Qatar in April and third to Sylvine Al Maury in the Group 1 Doha Cup at Deauville in August. Gazwan was fourth in the Qatar Arabian World Cup in his final start of the year in Europe. Manark (Mahabb x Mendra by Sousse) raced only twice during the ranking period, with two starts in the final months of 2015. He finished 10th behind Kalino in the Sheikh Zayed Jewel Crown in November, 2015 at Abu Dhabi and won the Group 2 Mazrat Al Rawayah at a mile on dirt at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai in December, 2015. Owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai and trained by

Erwan Charpy, Manark did not start again until January of this year, when he finished third to AF Mathmoon in the Group 1 first round of the Al Maktoum Challenge at Meydan. That race will be assessed in ratings issued in early 2017. Thakif (Mahabb x Sheena by Djelfor) had two Group 1 wins in the 2015-16 ratings period, both in the United Arab Emirates. Owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mansour Al Nahyan and trained by Majed Al Jahouri, Thakif won the Group 1 first round of the Al Maktoum Challenge at Meydan in January, 2016, and a month later won the Group 1 President’s Cup on turf at Abu Dhabi. During the ratings period, Thakif was third in the two richest races in the United Arab Emirates — behind Kalino in the Sheikh Zayed Jewel Crown on turf in November, 2015, and to AF Mathmoon in the $1 million Kahayla Classic on dirt at Meydan in March, 2016. Manark has been a fixture on the year-end list in recent seasons. In 2012, he was second in the ratings for three-year-olds in Europe. In 2015, he was rated third, at 123, behind Al Mourtajez on the basis of two stakes wins in Dubai early that year, including the $1 million Kahayla Classic. For the second consecutive year, the highest rated American-bred was TM Thunder Struck (Majd Al Arab x Bonnett by Burning Sand), who was bred in Texas by Todd Moak. For the 2015 season, TM Thunder Struck was given a rating of 118. He was two points higher this year, rounding out the top 10. Owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifi al Thani of Qatar and trained by Alban de Mieulle, TM Thunder Struck raced in Qatar, Dubai, England and France in late 2015 and 2016. The Group 2 Qatar National Day Cup in December 2015 and the Qatar Gold Sword last April were the highlights of his Middle Eastern campaign along with a close second in the Kahayla Classic in March, 2016. In Europe, TM Thunder Struck was fourth behind Al Mourtajez in the Qatar International at Goodwood and third in the Prix Dragon. The highest-rated female for the second consecutive year was Sylvine Al Maury (Munjiz 61 b ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK b WORLD

x Savavit Al Maury by Dormane). Owned by the Royal Cavalry of Oman and trained by Elizabeth Bernard, Sylvine Al Maury won consecutive Group 1 races in Europe last summer – the Dubai Duty Free Hatta International Stakes for fillies and mares at Newbury, England last July, and the Doha Cup against males at Deauville last August, beating Majeed and Gazwan. Sylvine Al Maury, a five-year-old mare in 2016, was seventh in the Qatar Arabian World Cup, her first start in the lucrative race. In 2015, Muraaqib (Munjiz-Tashreef AT by Bengali d’Albret) was recognized as the leading 3-year-old of the year, with a rating of 118. He had a successful season as a fouryear-old in 2016 racing against older horses, highlighted by a win in the Group 1 Shadwell Dubai International Stakes at Newbury, England, in July, the third win of his career at the highest level. Muraaqib had won two Group 1 races in 2015. Muraaqib was given a rating of 119 for the 2016 season, leaving him in a tie for 11th on the overall list with six other horses. For 2016, Motrag (Amer x Digama by Al Sakbe) was the leading three-year-old with a rating of 113, one point higher than Nafees (Azada x Vivamaria by Njewman) and Zikreet (Dahess x Dormadora by Dormane. Motrag’s season was highlighted by a nose win over Zikreet in the Group 1 Qatar
Arabian Trophy des Poulains at SaintCloud in Paris last September. Owned by Al Shaqab and trained by Fourcy, Motrag won two of four starts in France in 2016. The Arabian Trophy des Poulains was his first start at the prestigious Paris tracks. Nafees won the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge at Toulouse in late October for the Royal Cavalry of Oman. Nafees won by 1 3/4 lengths, a deceptive margin since he was not urged in the final yards of the race. Zikreet was fourth in the Toulouse race in his final start of the French season. The highest rated filly was Samaa (Majd Al Arab x Noorah by Djelfor) who was given a rating of 111, equal to the stakes winning males Al Mounteze Monlau and Dahham. Samaa won the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches at Saint-Cloud in late September for Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani and trainer Alban de Mieulle. She was part of a group of runners sent to Qatar for the 2016-17 winter season, and is expected to race in Europe in 2017. Steve Andersen is a correspondent for Daily Racing Form

A CONVERSATION with Jean-Pierre Deroubaix of The Royal Cavalry of Oman
b y St e v e An d e r s e n
Royal Cavalry of Oman consultant and adviser Jean-Pierre Deroubaix, far left, and Brigadier General Abdulrazak Al Shahwarzi, second from right.
The Royal Cavalry of Oman is commanding attention in Arabian racing in Europe and the Middle East. Through growth of racing in Oman as well as success in other countries, the Royal Cavalry of Oman has developed a reputation as a top-class producer of racehorses able to compete at the highest level of the sport. In 2016, Sylvine Al Maury was the highest-rated Arabian female racehorse for the second consecutive year. Based in France, Sylvine Al Maury won Group 1 races in England and France. She is back in training this year, and part of a stable of runners likely to continue to make headlines. Jean-Pierre Deroubaix is a consultant and adviser to the Royal Cavalry of Oman, working on their behalf of the management of the racehorses and bloodstock. In this extensive interview, Deroubaix talks about the history of the Royal Cavalry of Oman and goals for 2017 regarding bloodstock, racehorses, and the Cavalry’s investment in promotion of the sport through race sponsorship.
The Royal Cavalry of Oman has taken a greater role in sponsoring races in the United Kingdom in recent years. What are the plans for 2017? In which ways does sponsorship of Arabian racing help the sport? How do sponsorships benefit the Royal Cavalry? The Royal Cavalry Of Oman has sponsored races in the U.K. for many years. The ARO (Arabian Racing Organization) sent a proposal last season, including sponsorship in a couple of different racetracks (not only Windsor). It was a good opportunity to extend the “visibility” of the Sultanate of Oman. The Royal Cavalry of Oman’s presence in Arabian racing has grown steadily in the last decade. Have goals been met? What can we expect this year and in the next few seasons? In less than a decade, the Royal Cavalry race string came from nowhere, to now being ranked second best racing team in France for 2016. In first place was Al Shaqab (HH Sheikh Joaan from Qatar), and in third through sixth was HH Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum (Dubai), HH Sheikh Mansoor (Abu Dhabi), Umm Qarn farm (HH Sheikh Abdullah, Qatar), Al Shahania Stud (HH Sheikh Mohammed, Qatar), and Athbah Stud (Saudi Arabia). The Royal Cavalry’s horses performed at a high level in France, U.K., Belgium, Holland, Italy, Spain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and Turkey, from their base in France. At the same time, the Royal Cavalry horses based in Oman also succeeded at a high level this winter, with Maisoor (Burning Sand x Ahasen), unbeaten in eight starts, winning the Oman Derby, the Abu Dhabi Championship and the first round of the Arabian Triple Crown in Abu Dhabi. 66 b ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK b WORLD

The Royal Cavalry of Oman has a rich history in many aspects with horses, including a performance at Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday celebration in 2016. What events are planned for this year? Every time a VIP guest visits Oman (foreign Royalties, Presidents of Republics etc.), the Royal Cavalry performs beautiful shows. Due to the historic relationship between Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, Royal Cavalry was invited to perform a show at Windsor for Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. In 2017, the Royal Cavalry will be represented at many other events, like horse fairs, horse races, and endurance competitions. What is the status of Arabian racing in Oman? How many private owners are active in the sport? How many Arabian horses?

Right: Sylvine Al Maury (Munjiz x Savavit Al Maury), shown winning the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Juments at Longchamp in Paris in 2015, has won three Group 1 races in France and England for the Royal Cavalry of Oman in the last two years.
More than ten years ago, when I started working as the consultant/adviser for the Royal Cavalry, horse racing in Oman was limited to the horses belonging to HM Sultan Qaboos. Teams were running under the names of Royal Cavalry, Royal Police, etc. No private owners were allowed to compete against them and there was only one racetrack used to train and to race. It was the property of the Royal Court. As the Omani people are horse lovers, there was a real wish from many farmers to produce, or from private owners to purchase racehorses. Brigadier General Abdulrazak Alshahwarzi, the Commander of the Royal Cavalry, was receptive, and convinced the Royal Court to open the races to anyone. I went all around the country to inspect all the existing Royal Court racetracks for horses and camels. In the end, we decided to create a horse
track, inside a camel track, and the existing facilities were used for three years. It was in Barka, on the way from Muscat to the desert and the mountains, but not far from the Royal Cavalry stables. Something extraordinary happened; dozens of private owners purchased horses abroad, including second-hand horses from Dubai and Qatar. The Royal Oman Racing Club was created under the presidency of General Abdulrazak Alshahwarzi, and a new place called Al Rabbah Racecourse was found, near Muscat, with more space and facilities. This is where the local races are based now, running once a week, eight races, each one attracting eighteen to twenty entries. As the number of runners is limited to sixteen runners, there are always two to four “reserve” horses entered in each race. Most of time six races are for pure Arabian horses and two races for 67 b ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK b WORLD

They finished 1-2 respectively in the Dubai International Arabian Stakes in Duindigt.

English Thoroughbreds. Two years ago, a couple of owners purchased very good horses in Europe and in the U.S., capable of winning races in the Arab Emirates and in Qatar. Some of them are planning to send some horses abroad, in after the local racing season (from October to May).
Karimah (Munjiz x Kahina de Monlau) and Nafees (Azadi x Vivamaria) were outstanding stakes winners in France at the end of the year. How are they progressing for 2017? Are there other prospects that stand out so far? Both the filly Karimah and the colt Nafees won their “Breeders Cup” in France in 2016 and they are ready to compete in the European Group races in 2017. We have a couple of well-bred young horses (three-year-olds) in training, and we 68 b ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK b WORLD
SCOOPDYGA PHOTO
What is the size of the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s 2017 Arabian racing string? They have about twenty-five horses in training, based in France, and sixty horses based in Oman and the UAE.
are optimistic for the coming season knowing that some older horses are still there, ready to perform at the highest level: Alsaker, Djaikiri, Safinat, Worood and, of course, Sylvine Al Maury. Sylvine Al Maury (Munjiz x Savavit Al Maury) has been a brilliant racehorse in recent seasons. What are the plans for 2017? Sylvine is prepared for the Kahayla Classic, Dubai, at the end of March and her 2017 main target will be, of course, the Qatar World Cup, at the end of the year.
Karimah (Munjiz x Kahina de Monlau). will be heard from in 2017. She won both her starts at three in 2016, including this hard-fought victory in the Group 2 French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge for fillies at Toulouse in October.
The Royal Cavalry also maintains a broodmare band for racing Arabians. Where are they based, and how many foals do you produce each year? What are the predominant bloodlines that you are using? The number of mares that the Royal Cavalry owns went from twelve in 2011 to forty mares based in France, U.K. and Oman. We try to reduce this number and to breed only with the best-bred mares. The ones who did not produce a good winner from three or four runners are eliminated from the program to allow room for the young ones coming out of training. The plan is to keep about twenty mares in France and ten to twelve in the U.K., plus another twelve to fifteen in Oman. In Europe, we produce between fifteen and twenty foals every year. We try to classify the mares: for instance, the ones who did perform in Europe, on grass, and sometimes on “soft to deep ground,” are crossed with stallions
having had good production in Europe. The ones with good performances on sand or on fast surfaces are crossed with American stallions. The target is to cross the best mares with the best stallions. I try to send the young mares to proven stallions only and I will accept the risk to send a mare to a young new stallion (having no get running), to “proven” mares only. Then we must consider the size, the conformation, the temperament, the performances, the distances, the pedigrees. Hard game; we try to limit the risks. There are not many ways, but inspecting the horses as often as possible is the key to finding the best stallion for each of the mares. We work with the best breeding farms and the best trainers, and I am lucky to have two dedicated employees, Anne Sophie Benet and Aurélie Duverger, to help keep the breeding and training operations at the highest level and the “boss” updated. We are proud to work for the Royal Cavalry and can never thank them enough for their confidence, year after
year. With all the people involved in Oman and abroad, we are one team, and we have succeeded in bringing the Royal Cavalry horses to the highest level. Oman is now well known in the horse-racing world but also in the endurance and halter show international competitions. Thank you and congratulations to HM Sultan Qaboos for his vision to promote his country, Oman, through the horse world. Steve Andersen is a correspondent for Daily Racing Form.

When you seek a race-ready horse to acquire, what are the criteria that must be met? The target is to win Group races. If we are looking for a filly, I look at the performances and conformation, of course, but at the pedigree first, because we will keep the filly to breed in the future. You cannot build a band of mares without a basement of good old well-known families. If we purchase a colt, my priorities are the performances and the conformation. A poor pedigree is not an obstacle if the colt has already proven that he can perform at the best level of Group races.
Nafees (Azadi x Vivamaria). won his group stakes debut in the Group 2 French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge for males at Toulouse in October at a mile. He will compete in longer races in 2017.

A CONVERSATION with Jon and Krista Henningsgard
FAIMAN PHOTO
b y St e v e An d e r s e n
Jon and Krista Henningsgard have kept horses in their lives for decades through showing, training, and more recently, racing. In the last few years, the Texas couple’s involvement in American racing has grown. On the track, their DC Willeys Song has been one of the finest racemares in recent years, and won the Darley Award for Best Older Mare of 2015. The Henningsgards have raced throughout the United States, and even contributed to sponsorships of stakes races. This year, they will have four racehorses competing in Texas and other circuits. Jon and Krista Henningsgard recently sat down to discuss the family’s dedication to horses, their success in races, and ways they hope the sport can work for improvement.
W
hat drew you to Arabians in general, and to Arabian racing in particular? What is it that you love the most about Arabian horses? My wife had the ability to ride and train many different breeds in a competitive environment while living abroad. Her favorites were always the Anglo-Arabians, which sparked her interest and love for the Arabian breed. Once she moved back to the U.S. we purchased our first Arabian horse from Dan and Claudia Spears and the rest is history. From there, our love and passion grew for this intelligent breed. What impresses us the most about this breed is their intelligence and their willingness to work. So with my wife’s knowledge and my competitiveness this was the second match made in heaven — the first clearly being my wife’s and mine! How much time are you able to spend around your horses? Everyday we are actively involved with all of our horses. We believe handling and desensitizing our horses at every opportunity is the key to success. What do you do when you’re not involved with horses? We have five children and one grandson. So if we are not foaling out mares or racing, we are babysitting, attending sorority events, parents’ weekends and eventing shows.

For 2017, how many runners will you have on the track and which are your leading prospects? In 2017 we will have four runners. All four are Uptown Arabian leading prospects. DC Willeys Song has been your top runner. What is she up to this year? DC Willeys Song (by *Doran SBFAR) has been enjoying retirement from the track and is about to be a proud parent of a Burning Sand foal. She is sharing a pasture with her dam, recent Hall of Fame inductee Wibwilcca (*Wilkolak x Wibracja). Do you have a favorite racecourse, and if so, why? That’s a hard question because we love to race — get them in any gate and haul ass. That being said, we love Lone Star Park and Delaware Park. We have visited Longchamp in France and the tracks in Dubai, but have not raced there, and would love to add them to our list of been there done that. Jon, you’ve become involved with management of racing as a business and sport. What drew you to that? Short answer is my wife Krista’s and my passion to compete. We love the journey of raising these wonderful athletes to reach their full potential and the strategy in doing so. The business part

is more difficult because it is a business. The passion and enthusiasm has to be balanced with good business principles. Occasionally it becomes a conversation over a nice bottle and dinner with my wife. As a sport, what can Arabian racing accomplish this year? Any more specific goals in the next three to five years? If you could wave a magic wand, what steps you would take to grow the sport of Arabian racing? Wow, now that’s a question! Simply,
we need more horses! In addition we need to agree as a racing community to fully support the U.S. tracks that support the Arabian horse. Then coordinate race dates and support those tracks fully. Once we do that successfully, we can look to expand to other tracks.
love to do our part and enhance the purse money and elevate the race day experience for everyone, but there needs to be more done for sure. I look at U.S. Arabian racing as a combined effort, not a state by state effort and would encourage everyone to do the same.
You’ve sponsored races in Texas. Any predictions about Texas racing trends this year? We have sponsored races in California and Colorado as well as Texas but that’s a Band-Aid to my previous answer. We

as that was, I was so amazed by the run So Big Is Better (Burning Sand x WW Mirror Image) had during the same campaign. We were in Colorado with Mark Powell and “Big,” and I had the honor of hauling him to Delaware. To see history in the making and to experience the class of that old guy was great — what a horse. And to have both D.C. Willeys Song and So Big Is
Better on the same trailer battling to be the best older horses in their respective class, was nothing short of amazing. The best was when the announcer at Delaware Park referred to them both as the “Arapahoe invaders,” later to be known as grade 1 winners. Steve Andersen is a correspondent for Daily Racing Form.

Willeys Song was campaigning for older mare of the year. We spent six months going from Texas to Colorado to Delaware and back to Texas again. Along the way we met Travis Wales, the great jockey and friend, and saw firsthand the amazing work all the various trainers (Jerenesto Torrez, Ken and Valery Danuluk, and Lynn Ashby), did to make the journey a reality.
