In just ten years since its inception, Arabian horses bred by Al Shaqab Stud have claimed the world’s most coveted showring prizes, from United States National Champion Stallion, to World, European and All-Nations Cup Champions. It is an unprecedented accomplishment, and a testament to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of Qatar. Here in Qatar, on the edge of the Arabian Peninsula where the Arabian horse has thrived for thousands of years, the 400-acre Al Shaqab Stud facility is home to more than 200 horses. In one sense, the stud is an expression of His Highness the Emir’s ambition to link the rich heritage of his ancestors to the present. By preserving so many of the breed’s ancient sire and dam lines, perpetuating the native Qatari Arabians, and continuing to raise the bar in breeding world class show horses, Al Shaqab Stud’s place is assured in the landscape of the breed. When His Highness the Emir laid out his quest in 1992, the man charged with bringing the goals to fruition was Sheikh Hamad Bin Ali Al-Thani, a lifelong horseman. As director of the stud Sheikh Hamad relished the challenge, assembling a broodmare band that represented a cosmopolitan array of bloodlines. “We collected horses from all over the world to perpetuate the characteristics of the Arabian horse of our ancestors,” he said. But for His Highness the Emir, it was not enough to purchase horses. The challenge, and the sweetest reward, lay in breeding great horses, and further, to see the produce of Al Shaqab assimilated into breeding programs around the world.

With the deft use of the straight Egyptian stallion Ansata Halim Shah (Ansata Ibn Halima x Ansata Rosetta), Al Shaqab stud welcomed perhaps its most important foal crop in 1995. “It was as though it was fated,” says Sheikh Hamad. “The year we lost Ansata Halim Shah, the mare Sundar Alisayyah (Ruminaja Ali x Imperial Sayyah) delivered his son, Al Adeed Al Shaqab. He was a gift from God. I can’t find the words to describe him. He is unique, and he comes the closest to our ideal of the Arabian horse.” That Al Adeed approaches perfection of form has not been lost on judges throughout the Middle East and Europe. Among his wins: 2003 World Champion Stallion; 2002 Nations Cup Champion Stallion; 2000, 2001, and 2002 Qatar International Champion Stallion; and 1999 Middle East Champion Stallion. “And he is a sire as well,” notes Sheikh Hamad of Al Adeed. “We have many champions by him in Qatar.” At the 2002 Qatar International Festival of the Horse his daughter Amira Al Shaqab (out of World Champion Mare Imperial Phanilah) was named Senior Female Champion, while another daughter Hathfa Al Shaqab (x Kajora by Kaborr), was Reserve Champion Filly. Ftoon Al Shaqab (x Malvina by Balaton) was Champion Junior Female at the 2001 Qatar National

Show, and a colt, Adnan Al Shaqab (x Tebrah by Gad Allah) was 2002 Qatar National Champion Junior Male. Another son that looks promising is Shahem Al Shaqab, foaled in 2000 out of Imperial Phanilah. Paving the way for Al Adeed’s success on the international stage was the stallion Gazal Al Shaqab, sired by Anaza El Farid (Ruminaja Ali x Bint Deenaa), a U.S. National Top Ten Stallion, and out of U.S. National Champion Mare Kajora (Kaborr x Edjora). “Anaza El Farid was a stallion that impressed me and I wished to acquire him for Al Shaqab, but Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen of Argentina beat us to it,” says Sheikh Hamad. “Nevertheless, I bred Kajora to Anaza El Farid and she gave us Gazal Al Shaqab in 1995. He was the first of the Al Shaqab-bred Arabians to represent the stud in showrings abroad.” Gazal was well received in the showring, winning such titles as: 1996 Qatar Junior Champion; Egyptian Event unanimous Junior Champion and Reserve Supreme Champion; 1999 Qatar Champion Stallion; Middle East Champion Stallion in Amman, Jordan (with the highest total score); 2000 Reserve Champion Stallion at the Qatar International Show; and 2002 Reserve European Champion Stallion. But it was Gazal’s triumph in Paris as 2001 World Champion Stallion that remains a most special memory for Sheikh Hamad. “When I heard the National anthem of Qatar playing in Paris it was very emotional. It was so beautiful. I felt like I loved everybody. I was so happy.” In 2002, Gazal Al Shaqab gained the distinction of being selected by the Polish state stud farms to stand on lease for two years; one year at Janow Stud and another at Michalow Stud. “It’s a very big honor that this 120-year-old program would wish to lease Gazal Al Shaqab to improve their breeding,” says Sheikh Hamad. “We are proud of Gazal and his get.” Foremost among Gazal’s get is Marwan Al Shaqab (x Little Liza Fame by Fame VF), the reigning U.S. National Champion Junior Stallion, chosen unanimously just shy of his third birthday. The well-traveled colt has garnered prestigious titles on three continents, and remains undefeated in the showring. Marwan Al Shaqab will stand the 2004 season in the U.S. with Michael Byatt Arabians. Sheikh Hamad is eager to welcome him home to Qatar. “He is the pet at Al Shaqab,” he says. “There is no Arabian in the world who has achieved the prizes captured by Marwan. We are so happy to know that Marwan is the first Arabian horse bred in an Arab country, owned by Arabs, to be Champion in the U.S. In addition Marwan was named Qatar International Junior Male Champion, Nations Cup Champion Colt, European Champion Colt and twice World Champion Junior Colt in Paris. The first time he won in Paris was amazing for me. It was too wonderful. It had been our dream for many years to show our breeding on the world stage and to prove that we really are breeders. This was very important for me.” “For all that he has done and all that has been asked of him, Marwan remains the sweetest, kindest, most wonderful horse to live with,” says trainer Michael Byatt, who has shown many of the Al Shaqab horses to their wins. “He is a star, and he epitomizes the Arabian horse that everyone would love to have for their own.” “Marwan offers so many qualities rare to find in one horse,” adds Sheikh Hamad. “He has covered many great mares already, including 2003 U.S. National and World Champion Mare Zagrobla (Monogramm x Zguba). looking forward to seeing his foals in Spain, where he stood at Marieta Salas’s farm as a two-year-old, as well as those in the U.S.” Other Gazal get that appear promising are Marwan’s full sister, Rahaf Al Shaqab, foaled in 2002, and the fillies Enshouda Al Shaqab (x Efezja by Falsyfikat), foaled in 2002, and Osoul Al Shaqab (x Malvina by Balaton) foaled in 2003. “Enshouda is the result of not just a golden cross, but a platinum cross!” says Sheikh Hamad. “She is very special. She is one of the most beautiful animals we’ve bred. She has the charisma of the Polish horses and the type of the Egyptian. Osoul is another of the most beautiful fillies we had last year. I like her so much. Her eyes are really special.” In 2004, Al Shaqab stud will welcome 45 foals. “Of our 50 broodmares, many are of the Dahman Shawan strain which I really admire,” says manager Willy Oppen. “We still have six daughters of Ansata Halim Shah and 20 by Al Adeed. Of the 2003 foals, I am most impressed with the colts Sakr Al Shaqab (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Efezja), Maihab Al Shaqab (Gazal Al Shaqab x Little Liza Fame), and the fillies, Aazba Al Shaqab (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Moniet Al Oshaak), Talaiaa Al Shaqab (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x MB Tahareena), Jafla Al Shaqab (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Hazmeia Al Shaqab), and Shorouk Al Shaqab (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Aliah Al Shaqab).” Of the stud’s most treasured broodmares, Sheikh Hamad is quick to cite Sundar Alisayyah (Ruminaja Ali x Imperial Sayyah), the dam of Al Adeed, and Middle East and Qatar Champion Mare Kamasayyah (by Imperial Al Kamar), who in turn produced Wahag Al Shaqab (by Safir), 2000 Qatar International Champion Colt. “Looking at her, you might not guess that she would be such a brilliant producer,” Sheikh Hamad says of Alisayyah. “She’s a very athletic mare. She’s not extremely typey but she comes from a beautiful pedigree. She descends from the Hadban Enzahi strain of which we have few representatives. Her twoyear-old son Hadban Al Shaqab by Ashhal Al Rayyan will be a future herd sire for us. He’s growing very nicely. You can see Ruminaja Ali in him — the charisma, type, movement, and size. He’s just what we need in our program. “Ansata Mahala (Ansata Halim Shah x Ansata Malika by Jamilll) is another favorite,” says Sheikh Hamad. “She is a mare that Arabian breeders dream of. She has won a lot for us, and she, too, has a beautiful pedigree, tracing to the beautiful Dahman Shahwan mare Farida. She also has beautiful sisters like Ansata Majesta and Ansata Magnifica which shows how strong her family is. We are most pleased with her two-year-old son Dahman Al Shaqab by Alidaar (Shaikh Al Badi x Bint Magidaa). He’s one of the few colts we got from Alidaar. “And of course we cannot forget Little Liza Fame (Fame VF x Katahza), the dam of Marwan Al Shaqab. She has produced very well for us, and is one of the sweetest mares in the stable; very feminine. She is in foal to Ashhal Al Rayyan for 2004.” But there is one special mare at Al Shaqab who, although she will never set foot in the showring, and is unlikely to produce a show winner, is writing a vital chapter in the stud’s story. In December 2003, the chestnut Half-Arabian mare Johara carried HH the Emir’s 15-year-old son, Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani to a third place finish in his first endurance race. In so doing Johara brought Sheikh Mohammed a new appreciation of the breed, and fired a passion in him for breeding Arabian athletes … and perhaps to ride in the World Championship endurance race. 241 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ JUNE 2004

AL SHAQAB STUD

“Endurance is changing the way I look at horses, and more importantly, the way I interact with horses,” says HH Sheikh Mohammed. “Each day when I get on a horse, it feels like the first time. You feel, and I don’t mean this in a superior way, like you’re sitting on a throne. Proud. All the pressures of life disappear. “Now that my horse and I are in training, I am more aware of the fact that we are a team and that I must do my part. You can’t just ride. You must pay attention to the footing, the weather, your horse’s condition, and care for the horse before, during, and after the ride. I have this whole new perspective of horses. I discovered that the stereotypical image of endurance — just get on the horse and go — could not be further from reality. When you’re focused and you’re alone in the middle of the desert, usually on the third or fourth loop when people are really far away from you, you think of nothing but your horse, and it has a really big effect on you. “In my first ride, we were almost pulled at the end because Johara’s heart rate wasn’t coming down fast enough. We had ten more seconds and I was watching the heart monitor. Suddenly her heart rate dropped from 73 to 59 and that was such a big relief. But in that moment I also realized that regardless of where you place, just having a horse take you 80 km, to give you so much, is a great and humbling experience. “All my brothers and sisters ride at Al Shaqab and at our uncle’s,” continues Sheikh Mohammed. “Some of my brothers are into showing, some are into flat racing, but there are no endurance riders. So I said, ‘Okay, this will be the space which I can fill up.’ “So I approached my father and asked what he thought. I was hoping that my involvement might encourage others to get involved in the sport as well. So he said, “I’ve known you all your life. I know you can do it. Just go for it. But if it doesn’t work out, it just means it’s not for you. Endurance isn’t for everyone.’ “My father is always busy, but whenever I see him at home all I want to talk to him about is horse stuff. It’s a family thing. Having your family and friends with you makes it all the more special. “I look forward to building an endurance program. I know it will take a lot of time, work, and studying to find the right horses, but to have little endurance colts and fillies in the barn would be amazing! If you have a horse that you raised from a foal and watch it grow into a great horse and take it to its full potential — what a sense of accomplishment that would be.” No doubt His Highness the Emir feels a similar sense of accomplishment. “The Emir has put Qatar on the map as a source for great Arabian horses in breeding, showing, racing and endurance,” says Sheikh Hamad. “Next, he plans to create a museum and library dedicated to the Arabian horse so that all Qataris may learn of and enjoy their heritage. “I am especially grateful that His Highness The Emir has made it possible for us to learn and grow,” continues Sheikh Hamad. “He has been patient, supporting our shows, giving us the chance to go around the world to see horses, allowing our eyes to change. Among the most important lessons we’ve learned is this: Breeding is heart and eye. The eye needs practice. The heart needs love.” It is clear that this philosophy is bearing fruit, not only in the happy surprises of each new foal crop, but in the next generation of Qataris who are fated to inscribe the next verses in the song of the Arabian horse.

His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Thani with his marathon horse Cinco Festive (Numaa x Farizada).

“From a young age, my brothers and sisters and I spent time at the stables. Seeing the horses growing up on your own land, knowing that their ancestors were on this land, and that your own ancestors were on this land, gives you a sense of connection with the horse. Especially the Arab horse who is so beautiful, and who has this flair with people. “These horses are a part of me. All our people have this feeling for Arabic horses. It runs through our veins. When you see a horse running, or when you see an Arabic horse standing with his head high, you feel a sense of pride. Pride at having these horses in your own country. “Sometimes I walk into the stable in the middle of the night. Just watching each horse, looking after them, seeing what they need. I feel compelled to do that because they are giving me more than I am giving them.” — SHEIKH MOHAMMED BIN HAMAD AL-THANI
