haras meia Lua: THE LIVING LEGACY by Betty Finke

A

All great breeders in the history of the Arabian horse have three things in common: a love of the breed, an eye for a horse, and a vision. The lucky ones are able to turn their vision into reality. A select few follow and achieve a vision that transcends the boundaries of the fashion dictates of their time, and succeed in changing the world. There is no doubt that Lenita Perroy, whom the Arabian community sadly lost earlier this year, was one of those select few. With an artist’s eye and a true breeder’s touch, she created her own distinct type of Arabian that captured the hearts of breeders across the world. She did not do it the easy way, by simply following an already established breeding program. Instead, she created her own unique blend, using the best sources available and helped by the one thing indispensable for a successful breeding program: a truly outstanding sire. Some breeders’ names have become inseparable from the name of the horse that “made” their program. With Sheila Varian, it was Bay-Abi, with Sigi Siller, it was Estopa. With Lenita Perroy, that horse was Ali Jamaal. If those two had never met, if Ali Jamaal had not become hers, things would probably be very different today. For one thing, Ali Jamaal might never have become the household name he now is, despite the fact that he was named U.S. National Champion Futurity Colt in 1985. He was not really fashionable for his time, which still tended to identify Arabians by labels. He was neither straight Egyptian, nor pure Polish, nor straight Russian, nor a descendant of Bask. His sire was the straight Egyptian Ruminaja Ali, while his dam, Heritage Memory, represented the American “domestic” mix of Crabbet, Old Polish, Old Egyptian, and Davenport bloodlines, tracing in tail female line to the very roots of American breeding: the desertbred mare Nejme, registered as No. 1 in the American stud book. He was the product of an almost complete outcross, with only a few distant connections between his parents through Egyptian ancestors quite far back. You don’t really know what you will get with a breeding like this, but there are a few cases in the history of the breed where such a cross resulted in a horse that was totally unlike his parents, but himself a superior and dominant sire. El Shaklan was such a horse. Ali Jamaal was another. As for bringing the two together ... This is exactly what Lenita did, to stunning effect. El Shaklan is often named as her original inspiration, and she began her breeding program by securing as much of his blood as she could. Of the original twelve foundation mares she started out with, two were daughters of El Shaklan, both bred by Om El Arab in Germany out of Spanish mares: Naharra 1980 (out of Niharra by Jaguay) and Lydira El Shaklan 1982 (out of Lydia by Marpeso). Several of the other mares were bred to El Shaklan for their first foals, and their daughters retained.

Lydira El Shaklan ranks as one of Lenita’s most significant foundation mares. Her first two foals were Lakmee El Shaklan in 1986, by her own sire El Shaklan, and Lyria El Hardun in 1987, by the Spanish stallion Hardun. Both became broodmares for Haras Meia Lua and were eventually bred to Ali Jamaal. Lakmee El Shaklan produced the stallion Lethyf El Jamaal, a very popular sire in Brazil, as well as the Meia Lua broodmare Lalek El Li (by Litigator) and the mares Lahsa El Jamaal (by Ali Jamaal), exported to Saudi Arabia, and Lady Satyn (by Satyn El Jamaal), exported to Austria. However, it was Lyria El Hardun whose international impact was even greater. Lyria’s first foal, Lilyh El Jamaal, born in 1991, was the first Ali Jamaal offspring to reach Europe and win championships there. She was taken to Austria by Ferdinand Huemer of La Movida Arabians, who had originally started out breeding straight Spanish Arabians. The breeding program changed considerably in the 1990s, with heavy involvement from Ali Jamaal. La Movida quickly became the main source of Ali Jamaal blood in Europe, also importing the Ali Jamaal daughter Majalis and the Ali Jamaal grandson R Ali Bey (by Magic Dream CAHR) from the U.S. Majalis later returned to the U.S., and R Ali Bey was sold on first to England, where he was a popular sire, and then to Spain. For La Movida itself, Lilyh El Jamaal was of vital importance. She started out by producing three colts in a row by the Fame VF son Essteem, all of which were exported as breeding stallions to different countries: LM Limaal to Belgium, LM Lamee to the Netherlands, and LM Latour to Saudi Arabia. In 1999 she produced her first filly: Lara El Ludjin, who was linebred to this family, sired by Ludjin El Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Lydira El Shaklan). Lara became one of La Movida’s finest broodmares. Her son Lorenzo El Bri, by the El Shaklan son CH El Brillo, became a successful sire for Austrian skiing champion Mario Matt, while her son Lawrence El Gazal (by Gazal Al Shaqab) is now a senior stallion at La Movida. He has won numerous international

championships both as a young horse and more recently, besides siring many winners and also serving a turn as a sire at Janow Podlaski in 2013. Lara El Ludjin brings us to Lydira’s arguably most significant offspring, the stallion Ludjin El Jamaal. He, too, had an international career, being initially sold to Count Zichy-Thyssen in Argentina and later returning to stand at his birthplace, Meia Lua. In Argentina, he sired a huge number of foals, including several very prominent broodmares. ZT Ludjbrosiaa (out of the El Shaklan daughter ZT Shabrosiaa) became a foundation mare for Talal Omar Aggad in England, founding a huge and successful family that includes British National Champion Stallion ROE Lateef (by Gazal Al Shaqab), and winning the Princess Muna Saddle of Honor for the best family group at the British Nationals in 2012. Her three-quarter sister ZT Ludjkalba (out of ZT Shakalba by El Shaklan) was a broodmare for Marieta Salas at Ses Planes in Spain, where her offspring include the full siblings Abha Qatar and Abha Myra, by Marwan Al Shaqab. Abha Qatar was winner of the European Triple Crown — All Nations Cup, European and World Championships — as a junior in 2009, while Abha Myra, herself an international winner, is the dam of World Champion Fadi Al Shaqab. ZT Ludjteyna (out of Shahteyna by Bey Shah) produced the exotic sire ZT Marwteyn and is now owned by Athbah Stud in Saudi Arabia. At Meia Lua, Ludjin El Jamaal sired Jullye El Ludjin, a former Arabian Horse World cover girl and dam of Varian Arabians’ top sire Jullyen El Jamaal, as well as

several outstanding stallions. Aryes El Ludjin (out of Arianna Shah) and Jonathan El Ludjin (out of NV Justa Dream by Bey Shah) both joined La Movida Stud in Austria and became successful sires in Europe. Jonathan El Ludjin is the sire of Arian Shah (out of LM Alisha by CWP Chances Are), Champion at the German stallion licensing and successfully performance tested, and grandsire of BB Jawhar El Than (Raffael El Than x BB Jhadenz), the 2017 German National Champion Stallion. Ludjin El Jamaal’s 2009 son Eman El Ludjin (out of Elle Dorada) was a junior sire at Haras Meia Lua. Looking at the entire picture, it is safe to say that Lydira El Shaklan was the most influential of the original twelve foundation mares. That is not to sideline the impact of some of the others, and in fact it is sometimes difficult to keep them apart because they frequently have descendants in common. Naharra was Niharra’s only daughter by El Shaklan and her best offspring other than her very first daughter Bint Jacio, who was a foundation mare for Om El Arab International in the U.S. After having produced two colts by different stallions, Naharra was bred to Ali Jamaal for the rest of her breeding career, producing five broodmares and two stallions. Of the two stallions, Nyhl El Jamaal stood at Meia Lua and sired some very international offspring. Faez

Nyhl El Jamaal’s daughter Jasmyne (out of Justine El Jamaal by Ali Jamaal) was imported to Austria by Ferdinand Huemer and later sold to Kuwait. In Austria, she produced the black stallion Jazzmeen (by Essteem), who has had a very international career and is now in the Netherlands. Nyhl El Jamaal’s full sister, Nyagara El Jamaal, was exported to Germany, where she established a dynasty through her daughter MF Navarra (by SDP Taylor). Among Lenita’s original 12 foundation mares was one daughter of Ansata Ibn Halima, Rose of Cameo (out of Cedardell Cameo by Cedardell Heritage). This is a very similar breeding recipe to Ali Jamaal — a straight Egyptian sire used on a mare with old American breeding, though in this case with a heavier emphasis on Crabbet lines. Rose of Cameo was bred to El Shaklan to produce Roxana El Shaklan. Roxana’s first foal was Renee El Li by Litigator, whose daughter Regine El Jamaal became another foundation mare for La Movida with international connections. Regine’s daughter Reza El Bri (by CH El Brillo) became one of La Movida’s best broodmares. Her son Raffael El Than (by Jonathan El Ludjin) — who was “straight Meia Lua,” so to speak — is chief sire at BB Arabians in the Netherlands, while her glamorous daughter Rihanna El Hadiyah, by the straight Egyptian stallion Al Hadiyah AA, is one of La Movida’s finest mares, a show winner as well as an excellent producing mare. After producing Renee El Li, Roxana El Shaklan’s foals were all by Ali Jamaal. Foremost among them is the 1992 stallion Ryad El Jamaal, chief sire for Haras Vanguarda in Brazil, with get and grandget in Brazil and the U.S. as well as in Europe. SS Marietta (Dalul x Silveretta by Bask), a blend of Egyptian/Polish/Crabbet lines, has founded another very international family. Her daughter Scala El Jamaal became a prolific broodmare for La Movida, whose daughters are prized broodmares throughout Europe: Sarah El Bey (by Bey El Jamaal) for Mario Matt in Austria, producing the champion stallion MM Sergio (by WH Justice), now in Belgium; Scarlett (by Essteem), a foundation mare for Emaj Arabians in Switzerland and dam of their top producing mare Al Shareefah; Sayonarah El Bri (by CH El Brillo) for Knocke Arabians in Belgium; Samira El Bri (by CH El Brillo) first for Ses Planes and then Mandara Stud in Spain; and Sorella El Hadiyah (by Al Hadiyah AA) for Eos Arabians in Germany, winning the German National Champion Mare title in 2017. Talbreena (Talal x Breeze), a mare of Egyptian/Crabbet breeding, can also claim very international connections. Her daughter Talya El Hardun (by Hardun) produced several full siblings by Ali Jamaal,

including the stallion Tallyen El Jamaal and the mare Thessalya El Jamaal. Tallyen is best known as the sire of the brilliant Ruger AMW (out of HE Jiajna), who was exported to Britain. He is a British National Champion Stallion, as well as a champion under saddle, and a sire and grandsire of both halter and ridden winners. Thessalya was exported to Germany, where she produced the stallion MF Aryan El Thessa, a popular sire in France, and the mare Joanna El Thessa, who was a broodmare for Sax Arabians before being sold to Kuwait. Another popular example of Talbreena’s family is her daughter Tulle El Jamaal, who was a prolific winner in the U.S. during the 1990s but sadly died at a fairly young age, producing only eight foals.

9 b HARAS MEIA LUA b WORLD

While none of the other mares of the original dozen can claim families of quite such distinction as those listed above, some of them have come up with at least one distinguished individual. The El Hilal daughter Malika Cielo was the grandam of the mare Calyenna El Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Cahline El Li), who was exported to Italy. Calyenna produced the stallion MA Shadow El Sher, by the El Shaklan son El Sher-Mann, who was first sold to Spain, winning numerous international champion titles including the 2005 Junior Triple Crown, before being sold on to the UAE. FF Pavielle (Gdansk x FF Azuree), of Polish/Crabbet breeding, was the dam of the stallion Parys El Jamaal, who ranks as one of Ali Jamaal’s most significant sons. His son Besson Carol (out of Classic Krystall) was exported to the U.S. as a colt and was a Champion at Scottsdale in three successive years (aged two, three, and four), going on to become a distinguished international sire in his own right with offspring all across the world. To name just two wellknown examples, Besson Carol sired multiple international champion Fadi Al Shaqab and British National Champion Forever Besson, both of them also successful sires. Another Parys El Jamaal son of distinction is Petrus Carol (out of Jur Jakleen by El Shaklan), also imported to the U.S. and a winner both at halter and under saddle. Lenita’s original plan to have just 12 elite broodmares eventually went the way such plans usually go, and many more followed. The most notable of the later additions were daughters of Bey Shah, and foremost among these is NV Justa Dream (out of Mi Favorite Toi), founder of the fantastic J family. This family appears to have a knack for coming up with very special stallions. NV Justa Dream’s first daughter Justine El Jamaal produced Jasmyne (by Nyhl El Jamaal), who has already been mentioned as the dam of the black stallion Jazzmeen (by Essteem). Jazmeen has had an international career, taking him from Austria via England to the Netherlands. He is an accomplished show jumper and has also sired endurance horses. Juliet El Ludjin (Ludjin El Jamaal x NV Justa Dream) produced two stallions by Ali Jamaal, Javier El Jamaal (sold to La Movida in Austria) and Johann El Jamaal. However, Juliet’s full sister Jullye El Ludjin did even better. Her offspring include Varian Arabians’ Jullyen El Jamaal and his full sisters Jyselle El Jamaal, Jiullya El Jamaal, and Jylda El Jamaal, all of them top broodmares for Meia Lua. Jiullya El Jamaal produced the Scottsdale Champion Jiuliusz De Wiec, by the Polish stallion Debowiec, and the full siblings Jynnah Meia Lua and Jyar Meia Lua by RFI Maktub, who both joined La Movida Arabians. Jyar Meia Lua is only five years old at this point, and his first foal crop in Austria has been truly outstanding. La Movida also owns Jylda El Jamaal’s daughter Jytara El Perseus. Last not least, Jullye El Ludjin is also the dam of the beautiful young stallion Jaipur El Perseus (by Perseus El Jamaal), sold to the U.S. and already a sire of winners in Europe. Another daughter of NV Justa Dream has to be mentioned, Julianna El Jamaal, who was also sold to La Movida. There she produced Jana El Bri (by CH El Brillo), who in turn was sold to Murana Arabians in Germany. Jana El Bri is a top producer and an Elite mare of the German registry. She is the dam of the beautiful stallion Muranas Jassehr (by Major, a stallion of Egyptian and Weil-Marbach breeding), winner of many national and international champion titles and a sire of winning offspring. He is currently on lease to Michalow Stud in Poland. Of NV Justa Dream’s sons, Jary El Jamaal was sold to Chile and Jonathan El Ludjin to Austria (yes, La Movida again) where he distinguished himself by siring successful sons as well as daughters. Many of his get have been exported, including the stallions Arian Shah to Germany, Raffael El Than to the Netherlands, Joanna El Thessa to Kuwait, and Rose Jamaal and Bea El Than to Britain. Among Lenita’s Bey Shah daughters, special mention must also go to Perfectshahn SRA (out of Lady Tanzeer). She was bred to Ali Jamaal for most of her foals, several of which went abroad. Her oldest

daughter, the black Pandora El Jamaal, again went to La Movida, where — after a string of colts — she eventually produced several lovely daughters, including the stunning black WH Justice daughter Dominga El Justice. Pandora’s two black full brothers, Perseus El Jamaal and Pryam El Jamaal, were retained as breeding stallions for Meia Lua, while their bay brother Pershahn El Jamaal went to the U.S., becoming Scottsdale Champion and both U.S. and Canadian National Reserve Champion as a three-year-old. Lenita’s Bey Shah daughters also included the full sisters TW Bey Fantasy and TW Bey Fantaishah, out of Gioiella by SX Saladin. TW Bey Fantasy was the dam of the stallion Bey El Jamaal (by Ali Jamaal) another very international horse. Like so many Meia Lua horses, he first went to La Movida. He travelled on to Germany and eventually South Africa. His South African daughter Johrhemar Danjah Bey is a wellknown show winner in England.

Among the other later Meia Lua imports, special mention goes to Sonoma Lady (KJ Jordgee Boy x Brandie), the dam of the stallion Dakar El Jamaal. Imported to the U.S., Dakar El Jamaal was a U.S. National Champion Stallion and a successful sire, whose get include U.S. National and World Champion stallion Dakharo, owned by Al Khalediah Stud of Saudi Arabia. Not all of Lenita’s mares were imported from the U.S. Among the very few actually purchased in Brazil was Terta Real, a daughter of the straight Egyptian Ansata El Tareef out of AF Berta. She, too, founded a family with international connections. Her granddaughter Arianna Shah (Shahllenger x Alihana El Jamaal) produced the stallion Aryes El Ludjin, a major sire at La Movida, and now makes her home at Eos Arabians in Germany. Another granddaughter, Alessya El Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Alessandra El Li), was a broodmare for Shirley Watts in England, and Athenais El Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Terta Real) was a top producer for Michael Ponnath in Germany, who is better known for breeding straight Egyptians. She produced several lovely daughters by Egyptian stallions, of which Antigua El Jamaal (by Al Kidir) was sold to England. Terta Real was also the dam of the stallion Arkane El Jamaal (by Ali Jamaal), imported to the U.S., and his full sister Amelie El Jamaal. The latter is the dam of the beautiful mare Amalia Serondella (by Perseus El Jamaal), owned by Eos Arabians in Germany. Amalia Serondella was German National Gold Champion Mare in 2015 and is the dam of the 2017 German National Silver Champion foal, Eos Adorable (by S.M.A. Magic One). In later years, Lenita increasingly added Polish horses to her breeding program, including the Monogramm son Debowiec as a very successful outcross sire. The earliest mare from Poland at Meia Lua was Warsowia (Tallin x Wendeta) from Michalow, already a distinguished broodmare in Poland and dam of Michalow’s sire Wachlarz. At Meia Lua, she produced three daughters by Ali Jamaal, of which the black Walkyria El Jamaal was sold to Britain. She joined the black breeding program at Woodlay Arabians, producing three mares and two black stallions by R Ali Bey before travelling on to Equus Arabians in Spain.

Lenita and Ali Jamaal at home.

This account is far from complete, but it illustrates two important aspects. Besides giving an idea of the vast international impact of Lenita’s breeding program, it also shows that Ali Jamaal was a stallion who was able to “nick” with mares from very diverse backgrounds. Lenita also didn’t shy back from breeding his descendants to each other, doubling and even tripling Ali Jamaal in a pedigree, with excellent results. But she also took care to introduce outcross blood from time to time, adding new bloodlines to the pool. The result is one of the most genetically diverse breeding herds in the world, which is yet defined by a type all its own and, perhaps most significantly, clearly set apart from today’s fashionable bloodlines. Apart from a little Padrons Psyche blood through WH Justice and Enzo in recent years, the Meia Lua horses are, for the most part, prime outcross material. The blood of Gazal Al Shaqab, which is so prominent among today’s show horses, is entirely absent; but there is a relationship in that Ali Jamaal was a paternal half-brother to Gazal’s sire Anaza El Farid. The combination between the two has already produced great horses for other breeders, such as ROE Lateef, Abha Qatar, Abha Myra and her son Fadi Al Shaqab. There is unlimited potential there. While it is a pity that the Meia Lua breeding program will not be continued, it is also perhaps inevitable, because it was Lenita’s unique creation. It would be hard, if not impossible, for anyone to follow in such footsteps. It also provides the opportunity for other breeders to share in Lenita’s vision. She has created treasures which, in the right hands, will create more treasures. Lenita may be gone, but she has left a legacy that is very much alive, with all the qualifications to continue and enrich the Arabian breed for many generations to come.

lenita Perroy: SMALL STORIES OF A GREAT LEGACY

L

by Luiz Rocco

ROCCO PHOTO

Lenita Perroy distinguished herself among the breeders of the native Brazilian Mangalarga Marchador horse for having sought beauty in her program. But she was not happy with the direction the race was taking, as it always depended on inspectors and judges who dictated how the ideal horse should look. In her search for beauty and defined parameters, in addition to the worldwide appeal, the natural path was to dedicate herself to the Arabian horse in the early 1980s. During a period of observation with two Arab mares, to learn how they reacted when loose in their pastures, their habits, etc., Lenita studied everything she could learn from a collection of Arabian Horse World magazines. She researched deeply, from characteristics of lineages and pedigrees to important breeders, and even how breeders interacted with the market. She also visited the most successful Brazilian breeders at the time. The initial plan for Haras Meia Lua was to have 10 elite mares and, from there, to form a select group. Soon that number went to 12, then 15 ... and it did not stop. Her first acquisitions came from the United States, where she chose El Shaklan as the main basis of her mares, as well as daughters of El Hilal and Ansata Ibn Halima, among others. Visiting Shaklan in Goleta, California, she met Doug Dahmen, who became a close friend and advisor. It was at this time, 1984, that my brother Vico and I made our first visit to Haras Meia Lua. I estimate that I made

about 400 visits to Haras Meia Lua, based on one visit per month, over the years. I was going to see a new foal, to try to buy a horse, to simply talk, to discuss a new brochure, to take visitors, or to take photos of the horses. Whatever the reason, it was always a good excuse! From this friendship came great memories, much learning, and also the great lesson of pursuing and appreciating what was the best available within the breed. At the end of 1986, with the arrival of the 1985 U.S. National Champion Futurity Colt Ali Jamaal, Haras Meia Lua found its true foundation sire. In the early generations it could be seen that the dream horse also created other dreams. In a short time, Haras Meia Lua was established among the greats of the Brazilian scene. Soon, outside visitors were arriving, and a large number of horses ended up being exported in the following years, spreading their fame internationally. In 1989 and 1990, Ali Jamaal returned to the Northern Hemisphere to complete his show record with the titles of Canadian and U.S. National Champion, presented by Greg Gallun. One of the first males born by Jamaal at Haras Meia Lua was Ludjin El Jamaal (x Lydira El Shaklan) — a rare combination of beauty between Ali Jamaal and El Shaklan. When he was sold to Argentina in 1992, when the Brazilian market was going through a major crisis, he left a daughter of Bey Shah, NV Justa Dream, with a filly at foot and again in foal. The result was one of the most beautiful mares in the world, Jullye El Ludjin, who enchanted breeders with her beauty and charisma. The1998 sale of Jullyen El Jamaal, a son of Ali

Jamaal out of his granddaughter, Jullye El Ludjin, to famous breeder Sheila Varian put an end to questions about the athletic ability of descendants of Jamaal. She used Jullyen with great success in her program. Lenita’s admiration for Bey Shah led her to purchase his daughter, the filly Bey Serenade SF, who became Reserve Champion in Scottsdale. She was eventually sold. On a visit to Nicasio Valley, California, Lenita sat on the fence watching Bey Shah for several hours in his pasture, wondering what he could add to her program. One day, Lenita made the decision to buy more of Bey Shah’s daughters, and we ended up making three trips to the United States, one to California, one to the Midwest, and the other, from Minnesota to Georgia, driving nearly 2,000 miles. Always with Vico at the wheel, me as co-driver and Lenita in the back seat talking only about horses, it was practically forbidden to talk about another subject. After a total of 45 visits to farms and training centers, the result was the importation of 15 mares to Brazil, which made Meia Lua the largest single owner of Bey Shah daughters at that time. Of these, excellent results came with Perfectshahn SRA (dam of Perseus El Jamaal and Pershahn El Jamaal) and Acuity (dam of Yllan El Jamaal), among others. With the increase in the demand for sons and daughters of Ali Jamaal, both in Brazil and abroad, ever more important achievements were being reached. At the U.S. Nationals in 1997, Ali Jamaal get won three of the top four halter titles, with Reserve Champion Stallion, Parys El Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x FF Pavielle), Europa El Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x SL White Lace) and Tulle El Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Talbreena), Champion and Reserve Champion Mare, respectively. Later, other descendants were also recognized in the United States, such as Pershahn El Jamaal and Dakar El Jamaal. In Europe, the names of Lenita Perroy, Ali Jamaal and Haras Meia Lua also became synonyms for quality, especially through the exports made to La Movida stud in Austria. Lenita had great admiration for successful breeders in their breeding programs around the world and travelled to visit them whenever possible. For her, the fact that these breeders managed to create their own type and to remain with great predictability in future generations was an extraordinary fact. Among these breeders are Ignacy Jaworowski (Michalów Stud), Hans Nagel (Katharinenhof Stud), Judith Forbis (Ansata Stud), Sheila Varian (Varian Arabians) and Sigi Siller (Om El Arab). As a curiosity, during an open house at Michalów Stud, we went to the house of Director Jaworowski, then retired, and Lenita asked dozens of questions. For more than three hours, Director Jaworowski answered all of them. In the end, after having practically covered his 44 years as head of the most successful Polish stud, he said: “That was the biggest interview I ever gave.”

For a few years, in the 1990s, Lenita was received on Saturdays at Haras Vanguarda, at the invitation of Dr. José Diniz, Fábio Diniz’s father, to assist in the progress of the Polish program at the farms. Although she already knew a lot about Poland, there was always room for new discoveries, and in several trips to the country, new mares were incorporated into the Diniz family program. These Polish mares, along with those that already existed in the farm, were fundamental to the success of Haras Vanguarda in the showring, when they began to breed these mares with a son of Ali Jamaal, Ryad El Jamaal (x Roxana Elshaklan), bred by Haras Meia Lua and purchased from Haras Clio. Over the years, Ryad has become the leading sire of National Champions in Brazil. Years later, in two visits to Poland, Lenita brought to Brazil two mares that she purchased at the Polish auctions, Espalda (by Endel) and Figlarka (by Monogramm), and the stallion Debowiec (also a son of Monogramm), who became Brazilian National Champion Stallion and sired other notable stallions such as Jiuliusz de Wiec, exported to the United States, and Jazeer de Wiec, National Champion in Brazil and Chile. Debowiec was sold to Dubai Stud, but his blood returned to the program quite successfully through his grandson El Jahez WH. In 2007, another great acquisition made in the U.S. brought Haras Meia Lua forward in the quest for the ideal horse. The young Elle Dorada, less than a year old, daughter of Enzo out of the international champion El Dorada, two individuals Lenita always admired, was exported to Brazil. Through successive crossings with Ludjin El Jamal and El Jahez WH, Elle Dorada quickly became the prima donna of the farm. Her daughter Elzunya Meia Lua was sold to Qatar’s Al Shahania Stud, and before moving on to the Middle East, she won the 2016 U.S. Reserve Filly Championship. Lenita Perroy’s last bet was the stallion AG Shalom, son of WH Justice, a horse that matched well with the Haras Meia Lua mares. After researching several offspring of Justice, I recommended to Lenita that she should pay attention to Shalom, and she personally went to Italy to see him, along with veterinarian Paulo Zandavalli, who represented the other partner in the project, Laucídio Coelho. Between September and December 2017, no less than 43 mares got in foal by him, and in the second half of 2018, his first Brazilian foals will arrive. According to Lenita’s desire in life, with the agreement of her son Kim and daughter Helena, all horses should be sold, but I think the right word would be shared. We must agree that it is a pity that the story of the Arabian breeding of Lenita Perroy is interrupted, but, on the other hand, we have to be grateful for the opportunity we had to live with the most brilliant star of our breeding, already recognized as one of the best in history around the world.

I

I started with Arabians in the 1980s, when I was a teenager, and like many breeders, I was enticed by the romance of

Bedouin legends — that charm and spirit, and the classic, majestic beauty of those fabled authentic Arabian horses. My ideal was shaped by the successful stock of the time, primarily the soundly conformed, athletic Russian and Polish

horses. In general, those Polish and Russian-bred horses weren’t the prettiest, but there were a special few who carried the Egyptian blood of Aswan (Nazeer x Yosreia). Those few fostered my unshakable yearning for timeless, legendary, and somewhat elusive authentic Arabians … until I experienced Ali Jamaal. For me, Ali Jamaal possessed the essence, the quality, conformation, spirit and type of the authentic Arabian that had

long occupied my imagination. He was a living symbol of the ideal, and happily, Lenita’s first foal crop bore the unmistakable Ali Jamaal look. Eloise El Jamaal and *Miss El Jamaal, among others, were proof that Ali Jamaal was blessed with the gift of reproducing his likeness. Over the years, I procured mares heritage, directly from Lenita and of breeding, daughters Nyhl, When bred to mares of themany Ali Jamaal SF Veraz (Gazal Al her Shaqab x Veronica GA of by Jamaal, Versace)Ludjin, has sired a

charming collection fillies Ivory for Haras Dharamsala, who, like JullyeBFAlRenaissance, Gazal XX, are characterized by the majestic beauty Ryad, Yllan, Jullyen,ofParys, RT, Perseus, Bogart El Perseus, Halyn Rey, Debowiec, Jylbert de Wiec, and lofty WH. spirit And of those fabled Arabians. El Jahez I leased theauthentic stallion Pyher El Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Perfectshahn SRA) from Lenita, who gave me a lovely collection of beautiful daughters. Throughout those years, I came to understand and appreciate the reliable families Lenita had established from her foundation mares, and the prepotency that made her breeding program one of a kind. Ultimately, to be permitted to share in Lenita’s life’s work with a hand-picked selection of horses, who have proven they can and do reproduce their best qualities, has been one of my greatest privileges. And along with Elle Dorada (Enzo x El Dorada PASB), Lenita’s horses will continue to play a major role in my breeding program, and certainly the best qualities of the Ali Jamaal heritage will be perpetuated at Haras Dharamsala.

Owners and trainers around the world are raving that Western Cross horses have sharp minds, incredible athleticism,

We are the largest source of Ali Jamaal blood in the U.S., including his 26-year-old son Renaissanse (x Carismor), his AHW “Aristocrat” daughter JE Ali Selene, and his “Aristocrat” granddaughter WC Ciao Bella+/. This year, Renaissanse’s 101st foal hit the

ground, and nine of WC Ciao Bella’s produce have shown and won at the Regional and National levels, including the 2018 Scottsdale and now Region 9 Champion Hunter Pleasure Junior Horse WC Ciao Vitorio. Ali Jamaal caught my eye from the beginning with his typey head and well-balanced conformation. Plus, his get have an international appeal with success in the Middle East, Europe, and the U.S. We’re proud to represent Lenita Perroy with our fifth-generation of Ali Jamaal foals.

Walt Lane established Esperanza Arabians as a successful show and breeding farm many years ago while a member of

the original *Padron Syndicate, but it was his wife Jeannette who, years later, wisely introduced the considerable influence of Lenita Perroy’s Haras Meia Lua into their program. Walt and Jeannette became foundation members of a cartel involving an exciting Haras Meia Lua import, *Dakar El Jamaal, sired by Lenita’s legendary U.S. National Champion, Ali Jamaal, and out of her Canadian National Champion Mare, Sonoma Lady. The *Dakar Kartel was founded in February of 2001. That same year, *Dakar El Jamaal became U.S. National Reserve

Champion Stallion, and the following year, U.S. National Champion Stallion. In 2007, the handsome *Dakar El Jamaal son, Dakharo, put his sire on the world stage when he was named World Champion Stallion at the prestigious Salon du Cheval in Paris, France. Throughout the years, the Lanes have made good use of the Ali Jamaal blood in their program, producing some outstanding *Dakar daughters and granddaughters who continue to create champions for Esperanza. They also still own the double Ali Jamaal grandson, Mazkarade (x Majalis by Ali Jamaal), himself a three-time U.S. National Top Ten and the sire and grandsire of many champions, and they now stand the exotic young multi-champion stallion Alkeynos EA, out of the *Dakar El Jamaal daughter Maisa El Dakar. Alkeynos EA’s foals are already proving to be superstars! “Lenita was a very remarkable and thoughtful breeder,” says Jeannette. “She is respected and will forever be by all breeders who continue the Ali Jamaal line. We have been very successful with those genes and lineage. From *Dakar El Jamaal Haras Dharamsala_circle logo.tif to Alkeynos EA to Chrystal EA, Lenita’s legacy lives on through the horses we breed today. Through her love of the Arabian

horse, she has left an indelible mark on the breed.”

As a breeder and long time admirer of the Arabian horse, I was thrilled to visit the famous Brazilian farm Haras Meia

Lua in 2016. While there, I had the privilege of getting to know the incredible program first-hand and experience Lenita’s unwavering passion for our breed. I was especially impressed with her grouping of mare families and the depth of thought that was put into each and

every breeding decision. I loved that there was no sacrifice of conformation for beauty, and I feel that our Haras-bred stallion, *Halyr Meia Lua (Ajman Moniscione x Halya De Jylbert), is a great representation of the Arabian type that Lenita strived for.
