As the 2014 Polish “Arabian Horse Days” unfold on the pages ahead, we’d like to offer a glimpse back to June of 1987. Twenty-seven years have failed to diminish the captivating words and photos of the late Zofia Raczkowska, whose work expresses the unique heritage of the Arabian horse, forever entwined with that of the people of Poland.
“Imagine a tradition which has survived war and occupation, sacrifice and pain. Where history has conspired to destroy it, the art of Arabian horse breeding has outlived its conquerors, and become part of the fabric of the nation. Only the freedom of the imagination could have kept it alive; only the Polish people could have made it their own. This is the soul of Poland.”
