As we remember Mrs. Izabella Pawelec-Zawadzka in this issue, we take a look back to our June 1986 issue for an interview with her predecessor, Mr. Adam Sosnowski, Head of the Department of Horse Breeding in the Ministry of Agriculture in Poland. He talks of the tumultuous times in Poland during WW II, of national treasures lost and found again, and of his hopes for the future, hopes that Izabella brought to fruition:
“On September 11, 1939, we received an order to evacuate the Janow Stud in a southeastern direction, toward Romania.
We proceeded under the supervision of Andrzej Krzysztalowicz, marching only at night when we could avoid attacks by German planes … The very first night we suffered considerable losses …”
