Welcome to the District Projects Manual! The District Projects Committee created this manual to help educate members and officers of our projects and charities. It is a one way stop to learn all about what our projects are and how CNH KIWIN’S Key Club members and officers can get involved! So, how can YOU use this manual?

2

MEMBERS

Use this manual to educate yourself on our emphases and projects. As a member, it is vital you know what we do within KIWIN’S and how you can contribute to your club, division, and district.

OFFICERS

Use this manual to teach your members about our different District Projects. As an officer, it is part of your job to ensure that members stay up-to-date on our district, as well as the organizations we work with.

CLUBS & DIVISIONS

Use this manual to learn more ways you can involve our projects and charities in your events and fundraisers. For clubs, it is important to support our projects regularly through service events & fundraisers. Along with this, divisions should advertise our projects regularly and ensure every member is aware of what our district contributes to the community.

MAJOR

EMPHASIS 4

What is it? By partnering with Live2Learn, we aim to implement education structures that will help children develop literacy and social skills, enabling them to pursue higher opportunities in life.

History of this project in CNH KIWIN'S? This program not only creates endless possibilities to strengthen the common goal of service, but also allows each CNH KIWIN'S member to develop into a wellrounded individual, community leader, and lifelong advocate for children's education. In the past, our district has had Live2Learn Days, focusing on service projects ranging from tutoring to mentoring. We have also held book drives and created videos on why supporting Live2Learn can affect real change.

How can CNH KIWIN'S help? Our Major Emphasis can be supported through service projects and initiatives. Through assisting teachers, becoming mentors, and promoting important tools, such as language and computer literacy, KIWIN’S can improve the lives of children all over the world.

Interesting facts? Although many of our other projects and charities are supported through fundraising, Live2Learn solely works through service events. Therefore, the initiative focuses on what we can actively do for the children of the world.

MINOR

EMPHASIS 6

What is it? Pediatric Trauma remains the leading cause of death and injury among children ages 14 and under in the United States. Unintentional injury kills more kids every year than any other cause – including disease, homicide and suicide. Each year in the U.S., 9,000 families lose a child because of a preventable injury. Studies indicate that 90% of these unintentional injuries can be prevented. The mission of PTP is to develop local projects, which will reduce the number of children in our three-state District who are killed or injured by trauma.

History of this project in CNH KIWIN'S? In CNH KIWIN’S Key Club, PTP has been our Minor Emphasis for several years. Students and Kiwanis Advisors alike raise money for the program and hold events to support it. Kiwanis works to prevent pediatric trauma by providing community outreach, education and materials to children and families living in the communities we share. Kiwanis also provides community outreach, education, and materials to children and families living in the communities we share.

How can CNH KIWIN'S help? Kiwanis improve the outcomes for children who experience pediatric trauma by providing grants to our partner hospitals, which enable them to reach out to their communities with educational materials, safety equipment and information on childhood trauma prevention; offer advanced pediatric training for doctors, nurses and first responders; and purchase specialized pediatric medical equipment. Donations to PTP are used for grants to support our partner hospitals, our Kiwanis and SLP clubs, and to purchase PTP safety items, which are available for purchase by the Kiwanis family at a subsidized cost.

Interesting facts? On average, CNH KIWIN’S Key Club raises $20,000 every year for the Pediatric Trauma Program, most of which is raised at our annual Fall Rallies. We dedicate one week every year to PTP.

THIRST

What is it? A non-profit organization whose aim is to bring safe drinking water to communities where it is not available. They collect money to build wells that will provide water to those communities. For example, most of their projects have been in Africa where villages do not have easy access to clean drinking water.

History in CNH KIWIN'S? Thirst Project was our Governor’s Project for the 2018-2019 term as well, and seeing just how much of an impact we were making, we have decided to continue on with it for another term. Since KIWIN’S works to improve the future of the world, by working with Thirst Project, we are able to make lasting impacts in communities who may not have the resources to do so.

8

Diamond Division

PROJECT How much has KIWIN'S helped or how can we? We can help by doing fundraisers, a pledge (donate $1 a day, for a week), or a club recycling drive (club collects empty plastic water bottle donations and recycles for funds). KIWIN’S has made significant contributions to Thirst Project, with Diamond Division KIWIN’S raising over $15,000 and even building a freshwater well last term.

Interesting facts? It only takes $25 to provide a lifetime of water to families in need! It is not the Thirst Project, just Thirst Project Project.

Children's Miracle Hospitals The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is a nonprofit organization that has raised money for the better care of children through: up-to-date equipment, trained staff, life-saving research conduction, etc. The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) help to benefit the 62 children who are estimated to enter a CMN Hospital every minute. CNH KIWIN’S has helped this charity through having fundraisers directed towards benefiting the charity and/or holding service events which help to benefit the 170 hospitals that are in affiliation with CMN Hospitals

March of Dimes The preferred charity known as the March of Dimes was originally organized and set up by the 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who initially founded it to fight against polio. The organization has grown to raise money for causes, such as the prevention of birth mortality, and they focus on helping to prevent the death of the 72 babies who are projected to die every day from birth complications. The holding of dedicated fundraisers for March of Dimes, taking part in the March of Dimes’ signature event, known as March for Babies, and raising money through various programs that benefit the March of Dimes has been part of the CNH KIWIN'S mission for years.

Unicef Unicef is known to be the only organization of the United Nations that solely focuses on assisting children in ways such as: helping to assist in basic education, safe water, and sanitation. Unicef has shared the common commitment of Kiwanis which is to assist the children, and they have been doing work to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorder. The event known as Trick-or-Treating for Unicef has been part of KIWIN’S for sometime, and the event has helped Unicef raise $5 million for the elimination of Iodine Deficiency Disorder.

Thirst Project Thirst Project is a nonprofit organization that helps to end the world water crisis, and they have been known to raise money for the construction of wells that will be made within countries that have suffered from unsafe drinking water. Thirst Project has worked with thousands upon thousands of student leaders to help end the water crisis and prevent dangerous waterborne-diseases. We, as KIWIN’S, have helped by doing such events like “Dirty Little Secret” where awareness is brought up and students organize events to raise money for the cause of ending the overall water crisis. KIWIN’S has organized events, such as Awake-a-thon, in order to raise money for the water crisis and to assist in the improvement of water situations all over the world.
