Abstract

In the popular collective imagination, the curtain is not considered an element of architecture in the same way as the staircase, the door or the walls, nor is it even for a more specialised group such as architecture. This was demonstrated in Elements of architecture, an exhibition and subsequent publication directed by Rem Koolhaas (1944, OMA-AMO) for the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2014. This comprehensive catalogue chooses and exhaustively analyses the 15 elements that are considered to make up all the buildings on the planet. In each volume, dedicated exclusively to each element, their origins, typologies, details... Unfortunately, the curtain did not have its own exclusive volume, but was relegated to form part of the sixth volume corresponding to the window element, occupying only a couple of pages in it.

This made it clear that the most generalised conception attributed to the curtain in both types of public is the one that reduces this textile layer to its most commercial or objectual function. That is to say, understood as a piece of fabric or other textile made with textile fibres intended to cover the holes of windows in the interior in order to try to block or diminish the entry of light and in some cases wind, water, insects, etc. The curtains are at the same time and in their great majority, as we will also see some transparent ones, opaque sheets that prevent visibility from the outside to the inside, achieving with them more private areas to the interior. Basically, both publics think that the curtain is an accessory to the window and that it does not construct a space, which is why it is not considered an element of architecture.

Therefore, the aim is to analyse a series of case studies of projects that integrate the use of the curtain as another architectural element, such as the Samt & Seide Café by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, the Curtain Wall house by Shigeru Ban, the Grand Parc Bordeaux by Lacaton & Vassal or the Centres for traditional music by OFFICE, among others. To establish a classification of them on the basis of the spatial relationships that configure the textile elements in them, in order to demonstrate and vindicate that the curtain is not only an equally valid element of architecture as the others, but also behaves as an analogue device capable of generating adaptable architecture.
