Letter From The President As our communities and nonprofit partners faced yet another challenging pandemic year, I continue to be grateful and inspired by the kindness, creativity, and generosity of all those committed to making the world a better place.

The nonprofit world continued to navigate the many hurdles associated with the second year of COVID-19. The pandemic increased the number of people in need of their services, and at the same time, impacted staff and volunteer resources, constrained funds, and disrupted usual operations. However, our charitable partners overcame these challenges, and found strength, resilience, and new, creative ways to serve those in their communities. The Arbella Insurance Foundation was encouraged by these actions and responded in kind. Together with Arbella Insurance Group’s employees and independent agents, the Foundation distributed $3.5 million in support of more than 639 unique charities in 2021.

Beverly Tangvik President Arbella Insurance Foundation

We supported a wide variety of causes, including food programs, social services, health, culture, education, and more. This included organizations both far and wide – from our neighbors in New England to our global family. We tackled ongoing issues such as COVID-19 relief and social justice inequities, and emerging issues such as catastrophic tornadoes and hurricane recovery. We worked with long-term partners whose missions we’ve believed in for years and new partners who we just recently met. Despite economic uncertainties, it was a year of outstanding generosity. The Foundation’s matching and enhanced giving programs - offered to Arbella Insurance Group agents and employees - saw significant participation. The Foundation, employees, and agents were responsible for donating nearly $1 million. I am once again humbled by the goodwill and selflessness of those we work with. As the needs of our communities evolve, the Foundation will continue to be here to support those who serve them. Thank you to our charitable and nonprofit partners who work tirelessly every day to help those in need, and thank you to all those who so generously gave to their neighbors in 2021.

Sincerely,

Beverly Tangvik President Arbella Insurance Foundation

The Big Picture The need for corporate support is greater than ever. Many

families continue to struggle with hunger and homelessness brought on by the pandemic. At the same time, supporting approaches that proactively improve diversity, equity, and inclusion is critical. People and communities beyond our borders need our help, too. Arbella recognizes its responsibility to reach farther than our immediate communities, particularly to those impacted by catastrophic events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters, and now, the war in Ukraine.

Arbella Insurance Group Employees “I’m grateful and extraordinarily humbled to witness the support Arbella has provided to Dana-Farber for more than a decade – Pink Day truly exemplifies what is special about our longstanding partnership. By supporting the important work of Dana-Farber’s Community Mobile Benefits Program, Arbella funds our Mammography and Blum Vans to help Dana-Farber bring lifesaving cancer education, prevention, and detection services directly to vulnerable populations in underserved communities across the greater Boston area. I cannot thank Arbella enough for helping thousands of patients to receive crucial cancer screenings each year.” Magnolia Contreras, Vice President of Community Health, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

“I was a foster child, so the Wonderfund will always have a special place in my heart. The Wonderfund helps foster children with emergency aid, gifts, clothing, museum, zoo tickets, academics, and more. Now, as a foster parent, the Wonderfund helps the children I care for enjoy things they may not have otherwise. I was lucky enough to receive a $1,000 donation through Arbella’s Employee Giving Program that is funded by the Foundation. Knowing it’s going to the Wonderfund makes my heart so full!”

O

ur nonprofit partners dealt with waves of change and uncertainty over the past two years, and the needs of our communities continued to evolve. Arbella Insurance Group’s employees remained deeply aware of these needs and devised new ways to give back. In February, they launched Team Arbella to sustain their deeplyrooted connections to each other and to their communities, despite being physically separated. Team Arbella took to the roads as employees participated in virtual walks, runs, and bike rides for a variety of causes. The Foundation supported them in numerous events including: Interfaith Social Services’ Stop the Stigma 5K, Hands on Hartford’s Walk Against Hunger, the Walk for Birthdays, the Walk to Defeat ALS, and local MS Walks. In total, 343 employees supported more than 60 charities’ fundraising events. The Foundation donated $85,900 to those organizations to further these efforts.

Through the Foundation’s Matching Gift Program, Arbella employees and the Foundation generously donated more than $101,000 to 283 organizations.

Employee giving remained high. Through the Foundation’s Matching Gift Program, employees and the Foundation generously donated more than $101,000 to 283 unique organizations. Through the Let’s Drive Out Hunger program, employees helped raise $42,000 for 59 food pantries. Twice in 2021, employees entered into Foundation-run raffles to win $1,000 for a charity close to their heart. Five winners were chosen from each raffle, bringing the total donated to $10,000. Our annual Pink Day fundraiser went hybrid again, and together with the Foundation, Arbella employees donated more than $40,000 to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s community outreach programs. These funds provide testing and awareness resources to underserved populations in New England and the Greater Boston area. Giving back is part of what it means to work at the Arbella Insurance Group. Thank you to those who live this value every day.

Arbella Insurance Group Agents “At Chase, Clarke, Stewart and Fontana Insurance, The Arbella Foundation has always been an important charitable partner to our agency and the non-profit organizations that we support. This year the Foundation has been pivotal in supporting several local organizations that are helping those with food insecurity. The Foundation has made it possible for these non-profits to expand operations and help with the delivery of food for those in need.” James H. Stewart, President, Chase, Clarke, Stewart & Fontana Insurance

“The Bearingstar Charitable Fund is focused on making a positive difference in people’s lives. For those of us that work at Bearingstar Insurance Agency, we’ve always been involved in the community, but over the last 2-3 years, we’ve strengthened our commitment. The pandemic got us all to slow down and realize there’s more to life than going to work and doing your job. We’re thinking about the world more holistically. Arbella’s culture lends itself to this, too – it’s a great model to follow. That is why our employees take advantage of the Arbella Foundation’s opportunities to give back.”

Arbella Insurance Group independent agents continued to

inspire us with their generosity. In 2021, together with the Foundation, they donated more than $636,000 to those in need. Through the Foundation’s Matching Gift program, Arbella agents and the Foundation donated more than $355,000 to 117 unique organizations. An additional $128,000 was donated to 20 other charities that Arbella agents, who are active and involved community members, identified. These organizations included Friendship Home, Inc., Northeast Arc, Fisher House of Boston, Open Door Soup Kitchen, and Rockland Education Foundation.

In total, Arbella Insurance Group agents, together with the Foundation, donated more than $636,000 to those in need.

Arbella agents stepped up in response to the still-dire need for hunger relief in our communities, helping give more than $153,000 to 120 unique food pantries through our Let’s Drive Out Hunger program. Bearingstar Insurance agents remained active in their communities as well. The Bearingstar Insurance Charitable Fund, a division of the Arbella Insurance Foundation, donated $94,000 to several organizations that provide a wide range of services and programs to families and individuals. Bearingstar employees in MA and CT identified several local charities to support including Cops for Kids with Cancer, the Joe Andruzzi Foundation, Grow Hope Foundation, Christmas Wish CT, Special Olympics CT, Connecticut Foodshare, and many others. These employees came together several times to walk for important causes that were most meaningful to them, including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of Darkness Walk, the Down Syndrome Association of CT, the Walk to Recovery, and the Homes for the Brave Walk.

Diversity, Inclusion, And Social Justice “The pandemic exposed the injustice that many do not have access to safe, affordable housing, and people of color are disproportionately impacted. The Foundation proactively partnered with us to help purchase and convert an underutilized hotel into permanent supportive housing. This first-in-the-state project is a model for addressing homelessness, and we are grateful for the Foundation’s investment.” John Yazwinski, President & CEO, Father Bill’s & MainSpring

Our nation and communities throughout New England have

been forced to confront the injustices of racism, specifically pertaining to income inequality, educational gaps, joblessness, homelessness, and hunger. Given Arbella Insurance Group’s culture and commitment to supporting our communities, we believe in the importance of taking an active part in the efforts to make our communities more open, fair, and supportive of all people. The Arbella Insurance Foundation—which has always supported justice and equity through our charitable partners in New England—responded by significantly expanding its assistance to organizations that support social justice causes. In February 2021, Arbella’s Board of Directors approved the Arbella Social Justice Initiative: a $5 million donation to the Arbella Insurance Foundation to be distributed over the next five years to organizations championing social justice. This is in addition to the Foundation’s ongoing support of many other nonprofits throughout the region. In 2021, nearly $800,000 of the new funds supported more than 27 eligible organizations, and we have plans to aid many more.

“The Rian Immigrant Center is deeply grateful to the Arbella Insurance Foundation for your support of our online learning, career and citizenship programs. As Boston’s Welcome Center for immigrants and refugees, we, with the donations from the Foundation, have assisted hundreds of immigrants on the pathway from being welcomed as a newcomer and into the workforce. Without your support during the pandemic, our students would not have had the resources to transition so smoothly into online learning and career coaching. We are inspired by your commitment to social justice and racial equity. Thank you!” Ronnie Millar, Executive Director, Rian Immigrant Center

• The Rian Immigrant Center: The Foundation provided funding to continue and increase the Rian Immigrant Center’s English language and career development course offerings. It helped provide immigrant adult learners with online access to courses via laptops and internet services, drastically improving the number of student enrollments. • Father Bill’s & MainSpring: The Foundation’s grant helped fund onsite case management and wraparound services at FBMS’s newly-converted Rodeway Inn. Formerly an underutilized motel, the Inn is now 69 units of permanent supportive housing for individuals experiencing homelessness.

In 2021, nearly $800,000 of the new funds supported more than 27 eligible organizations, and we have plans to aid many more.

• Boston Green Ribbon Commission: The Foundation committed to a multi-year grant in support of the Green Ribbon Commission’s strategic goals, including to further aggressive and equitable climate action, advance climate justice, and strengthen climate resilience – specifically in the city’s most vulnerable areas. • Sojourner House: The Foundation donated funds in sponsorship of fundraising efforts and Sojourner House programs that support victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. • Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance (MAHA): The Foundation helped fund MAHA’s STASH program, a savings match program for first-generation homeowners below the area’s median income. • Quincy College: The Foundation provided a grant to help Quincy College increase the diverse enrollment of students in its Health Care Heroes program. The funding removed obstacles such as childcare costs, transportation expenses, and tuition fees that would have otherwise been barriers to education. • And 21 more. We are pleased to report these very positive initial results. We are proud of this work and have much more to do.

COVID-19 Relief Efforts Continue “After a year of remote learning, all children, but particularly low-income children, experienced significant learning loss and struggled to make social and emotional connections outside the home. We responded by significantly expanding our summer learning programs and experienced greater costs in doing so. The Arbella Foundation was there to fully support this effort. In the end, we positively impacted the lives of 5,000 children, and for many of those children, it was the ‘best summer ever.’ We are eternally grateful to Arbella’s Foundation and its incredible team for believing in us and our children.” James O’S. Morton, Esq., President and CEO, YMCA of Greater Boston

Our nonprofit partners continued to feel the severe impact of

the pandemic throughout 2021. They struggled with the costs of testing, keeping constituents safe, and providing their services on virtual platforms. The Foundation sent funds to help residential organizations, such as the New England Center and Home for Veterans, implement proactive measures to keep those they serve healthy. Foundation funds also helped healthcare providers, such as the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, expand their services to include COVID-19 testing and vaccinations.

The pandemic continued to have a severe impact on our local nonprofit partners in 2021.

The Foundation helped the Greater Boston YMCA expand its summer learning program to address the loss of learning due to COVID-19 constraints during the school year. The New England Wildlife Center received funding to launch a new Environmental Education and Action project in a hybrid format. As the pandemic made it more difficult for people to find affordable basic necessities, many nonprofits saw a drastic increase in demand for their services. In response, the Foundation helped organizations like the Weymouth Food Pantry launch pop-up food pantries, delivery services to homebound neighbors, and a backpack program to feed schoolchildren on weekends.

Beyond Our Borders “I, along with my colleagues, are very happy and highly appreciative of Arbella’s generosity in supporting India during this COVID crisis. Thank you very much!” Srini Gubbala, IT Manager, Arbella Insurance Group

“I am proud of the support Arbella gives to our local charities. I am just as proud when the Foundation donates to our far away neighbors in their time of need, too. Another reason why I love Arbella!” Susan Haskins, Sr. Graphic Designer, Arbella Insurance Group

The Arbella Insurance Foundation has been a leader in New

England charitable giving since its inception in 2005. However, this year called us to do more. Last spring, COVID-19 devastated India and impacted many Arbella employees’ families. The Foundation donated $25,000 each to two organizations: Asha-Jyothi and American India Foundation. These groups were identified by Arbella employees as active charities providing on-the-ground aid.

This year called us to do more.

When Hurricane Ida ravaged Haiti, the Foundation donated another $50,000 to two organizations: Medical Aid to Haiti and the Red Cross. These relief efforts helped survivors access basic necessities as the country began to rebuild. In December, the central U.S. experienced some of their most catastrophic tornadoes on record. These tornadoes wiped out schools, homes, and towns. The Foundation immediately sent funds to the Red Cross to help provide food, shelter, and other necessities. Now, in 2022, the war in Ukraine is creating a severe and urgent need for food, medical supplies, humanitarian aid, and more. The Foundation is matching donations from both Arbella Insurance Group agents and employees to the Red Cross and UNICEF, and has made an additional $25,000 donation to each organization.

Our Established and Emerging Charitable Partners “As the pandemic continued to take a toll and pandemic safety-net programs ended, the percentage of food insecure households in Massachusetts hovered around a staggering 15% at the end of 2021. The Arbella Insurance Foundation wanted to help. Their financial support of Lovin’ Spoonfuls during the holiday season enabled our team to rescue 60,000 pounds of nutritious food and deliver this food (the equivalent of 48,000 meals’ worth) to programs serving people facing food insecurity across Massachusetts. We are grateful for the Foundation’s tremendous recognition of the work we do and unwavering support to the community.” Ashley Stanley, Founder/Executive Director, Lovin’ Spoonfuls

The Foundation continued supporting the causes we have

believed in since 2005. We are grateful to our many longstanding and newer partners for tirelessly championing these missions. Continued work in these areas is vital to the prosperity and fairness of our communities.

We were pleased to begin work with a new partner, Lovin’ Spoonfuls, in support of their two-fold mission: reducing harmful food waste, and feeding Massachusetts communities. The Foundation’s grant helped Lovin’ Spoonfuls expand their geographic reach to north central Massachusetts. The Foundation committed a multi-year grant to support Father Bill’s & MainSpring’s Housing Resource Center, a creative new solution to homelessness. The Center will provide services geared toward preventing homelessness while also providing emergency shelter and onsite apartments.

“The pandemic and all of its aftershocks have created a perfect storm for increased levels of bullying. This means that our award-winning Boston vs. Bullies program is needed now more than ever. More than 160,000 students in our community at large have now experienced this program on a free-of-charge basis – and with demonstrated, positive impact among participating schools and students. The steadfast support of the Arbella Insurance Foundation has been instrumental in helping us forge this type of success and this type of impact. We are, and will remain, exceedingly grateful.” Rusty Sullivan, Executive Director, The Sports Museum

Youth and Families The Foundation grew its partnership with The Village for Families and Children, an organization whose mission is to build a community of strong, healthy families who protect and nurture children. The Foundation’s support will help The Village provide constituents with integrated financial stability services, including financial counseling, employment services, stabilization, and income support. Additional funding was provided for the introduction of a new, therapeutic sports program for marginalized children. The Sports Museum in Boston used Foundation funds to expand the reach of its “Boston vs. Bullies” anti-bullying program. This program has been successful in teaching over 160,000 schoolchildren how to recognize and prevent bullying in their schools.

The Foundation provided funds to many of these organizations throughout New England in support of the critical programs and services they provide to youth, families, and individuals of all ages.

YMCAs and Boys & Girls Clubs play vital roles in our communities, and have been appreciated by the Foundation for many years. Education and Culture “Arbella Insurance Foundation has been a generous and loyal community partner since the inception of the Quincy School Community Partnership, and has supported the academic and social successes of Quincy Public School students for more than 25 years. The financial, onsite, and student support has made a real difference! The support is an integral part of our students’ development into productive citizens and involved community members.” Janice A. Erler, Coordinator, Quincy Schools - Community Partnership

The Foundation is proud to help our communities’ children receive the materials they need to further their educations. Through its community partnership program, the Foundation provides grants to Quincy’s public school teachers to enhance learning in their classrooms. More recently, the Foundation’s sponsorship brought the Boston Celtics All-Star program to Quincy public middle school students. The Foundation also supported the South Shore Conservatory’s ImagineARTS program in the Brockton schools by providing funding for additional and expanded cultural programing. This programing is linked to the cultural heritage and varying needs of Brockton’s diverse population. The grant helped grow the program into two additional schools. As the “Music for All” sponsor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Foundation supported the efforts of the BSO to bring music to all audiences, including youth and families, school children, and college students.

Our Established and Emerging Charitable Partners continued

“The pandemic brought on major new challenges in Health Law Advocates’ work to ensure people with few financial resources can receive and afford the health care they need. The Arbella Insurance Foundation’s longstanding support for HLA was critical in helping us be ready to serve the community when COVID-19 hit. Together, we have aided our clients in persevering through it. The Foundation has especially helped us dedicate resources to groups impacted most by the pandemic, including immigrants, people of color, and children with mental illness.” Matt Selig, Executive Director, Health Law Advocates

Health and Wellness As a longtime supporter of Health Law Advocates, the Foundation was happy to increase its funding in this critical time. The Foundation’s support helped Health Law Advocates provide access to mental health services for youth, immigrant health programs, and aid to the transgender community and those with financial hardships. All of these services became even more necessary during the pandemic. The Foundation was also a sponsor of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s walks in both Connecticut and Massachusetts. The many uncertainties, tragedies, and difficulties of the year heightened the need for this organization’s services.

The many uncertainties, tragedies, and difficulties of the year heightened the need for these organizations’ services in our communities.

We were pleased to begin work with another new partner in community health and wellness. Dignity Matters is a nonprofit organization that collects, purchases, and supplies feminine hygiene products and undergarments to homeless or disadvantaged women and girls. These products help those that Dignity Matters serves stay healthy, regain self-confidence, and live with dignity. We are happy to highlight many of our charitable partners in this report. For a complete list, please see the back cover.

Thank You The Arbella Insurance Foundation extends its sincerest gratitude to all our charitable partners who make a significant, positive difference in the lives of so many people every day. We are in awe of the work you do and are inspired by your resilience, perseverance, compassion. As nonprofit organizations face new challenges in providing vital community services, the Arbella Insurance Foundation will be there to support you and the critical work you do. 12
