Arbor 2008/2009 Snowboards

Page 1

Since 1995, Arbor’s designs have been ecologically based, and

for most of that time, the only environmentally friendly alternative available. Over the years, a lot of people have looked at what we do and thought, “tree-huggers.” Classic… Yet we never fought the label too much - we are damn passionate about doing right by this planet. Just don’t expect us to fit the stereotype; Arbor is about riding and a modern approach to environmental thinking. Many of us who snowboard, skate, or surf are changing the face of environmentalism. The hardest kid you know might be ecominded to his core. You don’t have to broadcast it to live it - It’s not about identity, it’s about choice. A lot of companies have realized this, and are now looking past the mold and seeing just how many environmentally aware customers are out here. As a result, they’ve decided it’s time to get “green.” Good - whatever the motivation, their efforts are positive. For us though, you can’t just be green for green’s sake. If that were the case, we’d all be wearing hemp underwear. People expect style and performance. Arbor’s job is to find the environmentally friendly, natural materials, which can be developed into “eco-technologies” that deliver value. It is possible to replace harmful, man-made components with natural upgrades, and create better made, better looking, better performing snowboards. That’s what we do. In the end, if all the green hype turns out to be just another trend - we’ll still be here. Why? Like most of you, time spent riding gives us a direct understanding of what’s at stake. Protecting the planet is not about some place you see on TV - it’s about the environments we utilize everyday. We need clean air to skate, clean water to surf, and some freaking snow to ride.

BAMBOO Bamboo is a self-propagating grass that grows incredibly fast. It rapidly, continuously, and safely delivers more raw material per acre than any other natural fiber. This makes it today’s most renewable building material. Bamboo production is also remarkably sustainable because bamboo is inherently organic. No pesticides, chemical fertilizers, irrigation, or detrimental cultivation practices are required for bamboo to achieve its amazing renewability. BAMBOO TOPSHEET - bamboo veneer not only creates a clean, Zen flavor - it also works like a 3rd layer of fiberglass. During construction resin locks the dense natural fibers in place, creating a composite layer that structurally enhances a board, providing added return and durability, while allowing for important weight reduction. BAMBOO REINFORCED WOOD CORE - solid bamboo radically increases board power and durability. Bamboo is one of the strongest materials on the planet. It has 40 times the effective life of carbon fiber and provides 60% more return than traditional core materials. Bamboo has a tensile strength and weight-to-strength ratio superior to steel, yet it is light, flexible, and resistant to compression.

WOOD VENEER All of the natural veneers used in Arbor’s wood topsheet and inlay technologies are accessed from suppliers who produce their wood products in sustainable manners. The natural variance of real wood grain creates a completely unique, one-of-a-kind look for each board made with these technologies. FULL WOOD TOPSHEET - works like a 3rd layer of fiberglass - during construction resin locks the dense wood fibers in place, creating a composite layer that structurally enhances a board, providing added return and durability, while allowing for important weight reduction. INLAID WOOD BUTTER-BEAM - works like carbon fiber - strengthening specific target zones within the flex pattern. The butter-beam is designed to tune the flex to meet the needs of jib-specific riding, providing improved longitudinal pop, while allowing for a torsionally softer flex toward the tip and tail.

WOOD All of the following materials are renewable and produced in sustainable manners. PAULOWNIA WOOD CORE ADDITIVE- paulownia is a fast growing, plantation-cultivated species that we use as an ultra-lightweight, balsa-like core additive. Unlike balsa, paulownia strength is similar to traditional wood core materials, which allows us to deliver maximum weight reduction, without reducing durability. DIAMONDWOOD® REINFORCED RAILS - Diamondwood is compressed poplar and the hardest wood material available today. As such, it is an excellent replacement for endangered hardwoods. By adding it as the outside laminate to a full-length wood core, we create load beams that provide quicker initiation and return, while reinforcing the sidewall for improved durability and impact resistance. CORK DAMPING STRINGERS - Cork is an incredibly renewable, natural insulator. By inserting tip-to-tail cork stringers between a core’s laminates, we create a system that dissipates vibration in the frequency that creates chatter. As a result, we dampen the ride without deadening the flex. Instead of chatter you get usable energy. POPLAR WOOD CORE - Poplar is still the best choice as a primary wood core material due to its combination of lighter-weight performance, durability, and availability. .

W

e believe the current snowboard categories of freeride and freestyle are tired and need to be changed. The fact that a pipe board and a jib board, which have completely different flex patterns, are lumped into the freestyle category is one example of the ineffectiveness of the current system. The truth is, the modern snowboard design is all-mountain. Today’s boards are extremely versatile, performing in a variety

of conditions. The different designs allow riders to focus on certain types of riding but don’t lock you into any one terrain or style. To that end, we are introducing a board mapping system based on the “Terrain Mapping” program created by our friends at Rome. Rome’s idea of identifying a board by how it performs in four terrain categories is much more intuitive. The Board Map below shows where each of our new boards is designed to perform across a spectrum of terrains. We hope this helps you make the best choice when selecting your Arbor.

CARBON REINFORCING TRIANGULATED CARBON FIBER A-FRAMES – Running carbon fiber out to the contact points from the inserts creates structural a-frames that increase the torsional flex in the nose and tail, but not between the bindings. This increases on-edge performance without affecting the ease of initiating turns. CARBON FIBER STRUT - Inserting carbon fiber down the center of a board creates a compression strut that livens up a board’s longitudinal flex without negatively affecting turnability, spin initiation, or landing recoverability.

INSERTS 2X4 14-PACKS - provides a huge stance range and an amazing level of micro adjustability 4X4 10-PACKS - lighter performance than the 2x4 system, with the same massive stance range 4X4 8-PACKS - provides the lightest weight performance and affordability

EXTRAS BRASS EDGES - a softer metal edge for jib-specific riding, provides clean, catch-free rail performance. ZEROED CAMBER - signifigantly reduced camber for jibspecific performance, provides much easier spin initiation, hook free nose and tail sliding, a butter oriented ride, and smoother landings. SHADOW FLEX - a slight tapered thinning of the core profile between the bindings, improves turn and spin initiation, tracking in mixed conditions, on the flats, and during landings, and performance on rails, boxes and naturals. DURAFILM - an ultra thin layer of nylon that tops our full length wood and bamboo topsheets to protect them from damage caused by loose bindings or out-of-control skiers.
