Mutualistic architecture serves as a tool of contribution between two buildings, an old one and a new one to be incorporated, where their relationship creates a specific type of coexistence of MUTUAL benefit. This relationship was materialized in the project through the incorporation of a new structure that is subtly attached to the old library building through its right side facade and underground floor.
This proposal extends the architectural program and current uses of the old building to optimize and potentiate its current state, with the incorporation of a new building that complements the existing one and that, as a whole, forms a unified project, integrating the public space and respecting the existing architecture.
The architectural extension of the “Aurelio Espinosa Polit Library”, located in the north of QuitoEcuador, is based on the principles of “mutualistic architecture”, a term that comes from an analogy between Architecture and Biology.

MUTUALISTIC ARCHITECTURE
ACADEMIC PROJECT - INDIVIDUAL SEMESTER: FINAL PROJECT
The project takes place in Amsterdam Noord, an area where residential buildings and workplaces have been booming in recent years. The area is located in a seaport with a privileged view of the IJ River. The project sits on a flat topography, opening its doors to the pedestrian with a design that links its multiple activities into a single building.
HYBRID BUILDING IN AMSTERDAM
8TH
The design of the project begins with a series of terraces, designed for the relationship and coexistence of the user. The permeability and connectivity of spaces are solved through a series of bridges and the liberation of its first floor, with a structural arrangement of reinforced concrete diaphragms that configure its spaces, together with the flexibility of its geometry, which allows an adequate interrelation of functions.
The sinuosity of its volume generates a route both at the public space level, with its multiple living and coexistence spaces, and at the semi-public and private level, with the connection between co-housing, co-working and the market, through its communal areas.

ACADEMIC PROJECT - INDIVIDUAL 9TH SEMESTER: FINAL PROJECT
A visual tour and a new user experience is generated when walking through the wide corridors of this project, where all floors are open to the public with a flexible design. This intervention not only provides a solution to the problems of disorganization of commercial premises in the neighborhood, but also focuses on optimizing the permeability of the sector.
The project takes place in La Villaflora neighborhood, a sector characterized by its natural views of the Pichincha volcano and its proximity to the Machángara River. It is a neighborhood with a large amount of commerce and agglomeration of people.
VILLAFLORA SHOPPING PROMENADE
This project focuses on grouping the existing commerce in the sector within a pedestrianfriendly commercial promenade that is subtly incorporated into the city. For this reason, the first floor consists of three main axes designed for the connectivity of the natural views and the relationship with the local people. Two floors of commercial spaces are created, with places to rest and public spaces of universal access.
