Why Architecture: Love of beautifying the surroudnings Best Quote: And without doubt our epoch......prefers the image to the thing, the copy to the original the representation to the reality, appearnce to being...What is sacred for it is only illusion, but is profane... is truth diminishes and illusion increases, to such an extent that the peak of illusion is for it the peak of the sacred. Project 1

Project’s Descrption Inspired from a natural phenomena we shoould designa shelter As a group We used the crab to imitate its mechanism to design the shelter

Behavioral level: Synchornous Vacancy Chain: As the Hermit crabs grow they have to find a new shell that will fit them.

Crabs: Several aspects of the crabs will be studied. Legs: Studies will be tackled in an organism level and be- Organism Level: havioural level. Locomation: The symetry and the joints in the Shell: crabs’ legs are vital for the horizontal and diagonal movement. Organism level: Voronoi Diagram: The exoskeleton is composed of Claws: the voronoi structure which gives its strength and Organism Level: protects it from the predetors. It contains a su Organism Level: bstance called Chitin that has different desinities (responsive) Change in Colour: The Shell changes colour with We analyzed the crab; heat Its allocation, skin, growing mechanism, its joints and how doesn this affect its movement Healing Properties: The shell has the ability to heal it self. Then idividually everyone of the group members emphasized on a mechanism that helped create Behavioral level: a movable shelter Synchornous Vacancy Chain: As the Hermit crabs grow they have to find a new shell that will fit them. I focused on the growing mechanism of the crab called the crab molting Legs: Organism Level: Locomation: The symetry and the joints in the crabs’ legs are vital for the horizontal and diagonal movement. Concept Generation Using the expanding and volumetric expansion mechanism of the crab’s exoskeleton growing phenomena, in which the crab uses its environemnt to carry out the process of expansion. Modeling of the Phenomena A whole of rectilinear shape that is folded into traingles. The different traingulations combinatons create different volume s and experience in response to the enviroment

ARCH 473/3522 - Spring 2019

Translation into Physical Model Folding approach thus through folding the volume could reach multiple sizes and volumes responding to the environemnt climatic changes

Description of the project

Through the folding technique , I created an experience by using different materials and creating cuts that produce shade and shadows. The spaces are adaptable for its users and to the external environemnt. The shelter responds to the environment that results in different shape, sizes and spaces using the folding mechanism One module of the shelter expand by folding down or up its different parts and many modules can be put next to each others if the desired area increased . The shelter also can accomodate to the external environment so its can adapt to differentenvironemnts.

The Road Ahead:

The course is a life changing experience that lead us to design in a new and unique way. The course has changed the way we see design and how steps are accumulated. The course showed us the importance of the form and how it is not just an output, it could also be functionalized. In addition, how structure of a building or a facade could be the beautifying element and not the enemy of an architect; always the case. This course taught us to embrace every element in the architecture we produce by learning from our many iterations.
