Habiba Moemen Architecture Student

I’m Habiba Moemen, a 21 year old architecture student in the American university in Cairo studying in my fourth year and one year away from graduation. Since I was a little child I always had a passion for designs and buildings. As whenever I traveled with my family I’d always be fascinated by the buildings, especially when I went to Italy. I felt like the whole country was a masterpiece and I fell in love with it, then I was sure that after Im done with university, I want to get my masters from Italy. In addition, I know for sure that I want to have my own business one day which is a dream I’ll always follow and I will name it “HM designs world”. Although as I mentioned architecture has always been my dream but I also have a passion for fashion and jewelry which is also under the name of designs which is my main passion and I always love to be up to date to trends and fashion designers. My business

won’t be only dedicated for engineering it will be a world of several designs, colors, materials, and items. Furthermore, moving to Digital Design Studio and Workshop, the course where I finally found myself. I was a platform and starting point for me to go beyond reality, be crerative and conceptual as much as I can. On the other hand, the team taught us that everything is doable, and also by going beyong the rule and boundries, they also taught us how to still stick to the reality and make every design and form a real building which for me was the most challenging part but also very interesting. Thankful for learning such a program and a way of thinking to express my hidden desires and different forms. In this storybook, you will find the journey and progress I had from the beginning of the semster and how the form developed to reach it’s peak.

My main inspiration, mobius and klein bottle “Inside and outside blurred

3 Exterior shot showing the building that will be shown in the story book

In project 1, we are required to design a mobile shelter for the homeless. We are encouraged to develop several alternatives and design ideas as part of your preliminary search for a language of formal expression that responds to basic aesthetic and functional requirements. The notion of a shelter does not only denote concepts of mere protection and residence, but also aspects of social coherence and interaction. We are required to develop an in-depth inquiry into inspirations from nature as a driver for your designs. More specifically, we are required to observe the phenomenon of growth in nature as a source of inspiration.

OCTOPUS

Octopus Introduction: Sea creature, lives in coastal marine waters, dense small holes and around the rocks and corals. Life span from three to five years. Eaten by Eels, fish, seals, whales and birds. Newly born octopus eats baby crabs and sea stars. Adult octopus eats large crabs, snails, small fish and other octopus. Hunts at night. Main Characteristics: Has Nine brains, eight tentacles, three hearts, blue blooded, zero bones (invertebrate) 99% muscels, elongated body, dark defined eyes. Unique Features: Produces ink to escape, protection method. Adapt to changes, and change of skin colour.

Project location: SUEZ, EGYPT

Site Introduction: Suez is a seaport city (population of about 750,000 as of August 2018) in north-eastern Egypt, located on the north coast of the Gulf of Suez (a branch of the Red Sea), near the southern terminus of the Suez Canal. Why suez? Suez is connected by a canal, railways and highways. just like the octopus that has diverse membranes.

KEYWORDS Adaptability

The octopus has problem solving skills, which helps him to adapt to several env. changes

Fluidity

Has flexile body with no bones which is very fluid

Evolving

When he attacks and lose an arm it could regrow

Resilience

His technique of self defense when threatened is by splashing ink which helps him escape

Camouflage

Has the ability to change colors easily

DIGITAL FABRICATION In my model, I had to use two programms for fabrictation, which are Slicer and Cura, as my model is made of two parts, the fluid curvilinear part, and the mesh. The mesh will be done using slicer to be laser cutted and the main form will be made by Cura to be 3D printed. In the process of Digital Fabrication as was really amused as it is my first experience and trial to do such a thing, I have always used Autocad for laser cutting only.

Adjustments according to the scale of the model should be made first before entering cura, also thickness should be adjusted in several surfaces.

SITE LOCATION BLOM BANK South teseen street, New cairo

The building is located between North and South teseen street, it’s called Benok zone. It’s a commercial area, with high capacity, and very loud. The building faces a residential area from it’s south east facade. SOUTH TESEEN STREET

ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS The bank is has his most unique element and known by, is a huge glass facade which is located in the South side which is the side with the highest heat gain in this area, thus, it need a face lift to protect it.

The prevailing wind comes from the North west direction. While secondary comes from North and North East side.

SUMMER June - October: Shade needed from sunrise to sunset November: Sun needed from 7am-8am then shade December: Sun needed from 7am-11am then shade WINTER Shade needed in June, while from other months sun is needed

Habiba Moemen

4 ISSUE TO BE SOLVED The glazed curtian wall placed in the southern facade doesnot go with the hot climate in cario as it’s very sunny and hot and the south facade it the hottest.

SOLUTION Well after finishing the buildings, the best solution is to create a shed around the curtain wall exsisting to protect the building form the hot climate and sun, and oacts differently upon weather conditions ACHIEVMENTS PRIVACY Glass facade lacks privacy for specific rooms which is needed in a bank. NOISE South teseen is crowded area with hight noise, facelift should minimiza noise entering building SHADING DEVICE curtain wall facing south facade, needs to be protected from heat and sunrays entering through glass VENTILATION facade has no openings to allow natural ventilation for buildings thus facelift will provide solutions such as opening, windcatchers etc.

PARAMETERS AND SKIN BEHAVIOR PARAMETER 1 OPENINGS WIDTH By adding openings and perforations in the gypsum, and by increasing the diameter/width of the openings, the light penetration increased. DESIGN RESPONSE sensory stimulation The openings width and light/noise are directly proportional. By increasing the openings width the light entering the building increased, while the noise and sound entering also increased. SKIN RESPONSE modifications According to the analysis, the openings width should be decided according to the function of the space, if private or small should have small openings to avoid noise and extra light. While for public or large spaces it should have large openings to allow more light.

7 PARAMETER 2 CONTROL POINTS The mold is flexible and adaptable to any changes which could be flattened, smoothed, stretched to adapt the form requested form to fit the conditions or requirments and it will be done using control points with respect to the center point. DESIGN RESPONSE tweaking to adapt Control points is responsible for several factors. It depends on the needs, in could be responsible for sun rays entering the building according different seasons and its needs. Wind direction by pushing/pulling some points. SKIN RESPONSE adaptations Control points fro shed and control points for windows. So basically, the pattern used in my double skin should by curves combined from different control points which is changeable by the season and conditions, in winter control points should be pushed away from the center to allow more sun rays entering and the openings still closed to avoid wind and vice versa. ARCH 473/3522 - Fall 2020

Habiba Moemen

8 PARAMETER 3 MOLD DEPTH FORCES APPLIED The higher the depth of the mold the more thickness and bulkiness it gives the shape. Also the higher the force applied on the curves resulting on a more curvature shapes affecting the design. DESIGN RESPONSE playing with forces and depth The depth and thickness of the shape could be a good insulation for noise, wind pressure. While the curvature and changes in shapes and angles could act as a shading devices based on seasons, sun and wind needed also based on function and floor height of the room. SKIN RESPONSE negative spaces The forces applied created curvatures, creates also some negative spaces, which could act as shading devices from unwanted sun, also it could reflect the wind coming in winter and push it away and vice versa.
