“As an architect, you design for the present with an awareness of the past for a furture which is essentially unknown” ~ Norman Foster

I am an Architectural student, in my fourth year ‘senior year’. I am supposed to graduate next year. I am that type of person that follows technology. I love tectonics and the fact that this project allowed me to experience real life shape-shifting facades and modules was a headstart that may inspire my thesis project. I led my team into choosing the natural phenomena that inspired us the whole semester. I am a team leader in other aspects in my life; scout for example. Scout is my second main extracurricalr activity that i can never let go of. It teaches my the way to go through life.

This is my passion in architecture. The fact that i get to know something about everything is thrilling. Most of the professions just excel everything about their fields but don’t get to know other aspects in life. Unlike architects who encounter different knowledge about different life aspects as eventually I am designing for the human being. This is the most sacred belief, the human is what God created, an I am supposed to assist in his comfort. Such an honor to perform. That’s why I try as much as I can to accomplish my designs with all duty and perfectionism to produce well-designed architecture for the people to benefit and enjoy. Lastly, this storybook will be telling the story of the ‘sretch’. How it came up as an indea till it became a standing architectural and functional building.

3 FULGURITE

“Petrified lightning is a permanent record of the path of lightning in earth, and is called a fulgurite, after fulgur, the Latin word for lightning. Hollow, glass-lined tubes with sand adhering to the outside. The glass lining of a fulgurite is naturally produced silica glass (Lechatelierite).

4

Characteristics:  • Quite brittle  • Vary in color (Black & White)  • Lustrous within  • Rough Sand cover  • Tiny bubbles (within the glassy portion)

Process:  •High temperature of the stroke fuses the sand  •Blast of a billion Joules radiates through the ground  •It branches through it like the root system of a tree Conditions:  •Existing sand high in silica or quartz  •At least 1,800 degrees Celsius/3,272 degrees Fahrenheit of lightning.

7 Misconceived FULGURITE

Characteristics: The lightning creates a tube of glass through the ground, not above it. Though fulgurite is made below the ground, it does have a way to get above it: Erosion.

11 GLUE

Experiments implemented on different kinds of glue by adding Vinegar, Water, Soap, Flour and even heating to detect whether the glue would react similar to the sand and produce a different structure like the Fulgurite or will it lose its properties vor remain the same. Sand reacted to the lightning and formed a new structure called “Fulgurite.

Thermoplastic Polymer Viscosity: the state of being thick, sticky and semifluid in consistency, due to internal friction. Glue depends on internal friction, heating and addition of different materials plays a role in its viscosity. Static then changes to dynamism through reverse branching

Process: Solidification into dynamic vs. static structures according to the movement of people and shadows created by light in the courtyard. “Reverse Branching

15 Reverse Branching

Characteristics: Several branches that form a one wholistic structure. Alike Sand that formed the Fulgurite from several particles into one.

17 Inspirations

Characteristics: Allow for Light Penetration by opening and closing. Formed by a pattern that solidifies from several to whole.

21 Site Selection

Characteristics: The courtyard next to Architecture & Mechanical. Parameters: seating & trees Variables: Movement of people & light People’s Movement will transform the structure’s staticness into dynamism through the experience encountered by students within the structure that intrigued them by the shade and shadow created by the parametric elements. Seatings and trees will be integrated to give a natural feeling.

22

Characteristics: Choosing the pattern that will create the reverse branching concept. Pipes were the external structure that will branch from different entrances towards the central point in the building.

Process: The spread in pipes will start from the entrances where there will be 3 according to the site analysis forming a universal space in the middle were functions are most efficient. This will require as well an internal glass structure that will enclose the building.

24

Characteristics: The mechanism at the beginning was the change from felexible to static and from the hard to static. Therefore, one side would look so rigid and the other will look so dynakic. Universal space in the middle of the building created by different branches allover the site. Pipes were the main material for the external shell that will form the mass of the building.

Process: The branches were still in process not yet defined. How the building would look like was dependent on how the branches would flow. Entrances and functionality weren’t yet thouht off.
