photoshop, grasshopper and indesign. I attended a construction internship at ECG which was mainly site internship. This internship helped me understand a lot of concepts of creating our designs in real world. I also attended an internship in Design Avenue where I was mainly in the interior design section. This internship helped me make more sense of residential spaces and understand the luxury of them. If I have free time, I work with my family to do small scale designs for them.
I am Hana Al Manadily halfway through the process of being an Architect. I am 21 years old and currently an undergrad studying architecture at the American University in Cairo. I am minoring in entrepreneurship. Both are two topics I am extremely interested in and hoping to peruse a career in both fields. From a very young age and I was very passionate about architecture. Also I like joining extra-circular activities because they help gain a lot of skills and experience in other fields. I was GM in PAL one of the most beneficial experiences I went through. Design 1 was chosen to be exhibited with university annual exhibition. My design 2 research was selected to be part of EURECA. Through my years in university i have gained many computer skills including autocad, rhino, revit,
Through my journey with 473, I have developed a lot of computer skills but most importantly my design skills were enhanced. Thinking parametrically is a challenge but a challenge that is worth it at the end. Being able to think outside the box and having the tools to create what is in your mind is something I really enjoyed at the course.

IX Different Material Exploration
Materials and Variables: Aluminum vs flames Friction paper vs wax Foam Paper vs flame Pu Foam vs air Pu Foam vs Paint Using various different materials and exploring their materiality, flexibility and reactions to different stimuli. From direct flame, to indirect heat, adding paint, adding hot wax and adjusting the factor of humidity to see various results. In this stage, the exploration was with no boundaries to inspire the second stage of detailing the motion and mobility to use in the pavilion design. Measurements of dimensions, time was taken into consideration to record and understand the process happening. Conclusion: Each materials reacts differently to the same stimuli where one material can change color and the other

X The transition that happened to rubber foam when subjected to direct flame was an interesting behavior to observe. The rubber foam after 10 seconds of direct flame start to curl down for almost 15 seconds and then it curls back up really fast. If the rubber foam after subjected to flame for 10 seconds and left after that it will remain curling down and maintain it’s new form. The new form is extremely stiff and rough it no longer has the flexibility it had before coming close to direct flame. Main Relation to the next projects is the point that gets subjected to flame will be the point that affects the curving of my pavilion Before: - Shape: Rectangular Sheet - Texture: Smooth -Property: Extremely Flexible After - Shape: Curvilinear form - Texture: Rough

XIV Site Location: AUC Art Center. The main reason behind choosing AUC Art Center as the location of my pavilion is to create a strong element that differentiates the art center from the adjacent buildings that are mainly administrative buildings. Wanting to create an identity for the art center where it becomes a magnet in the site for people to acknowledge and visit. Strengths and Opportunities: - Region with relatively high traffic as it near the main university entrance. - Artistic Place that allow for creativity. - Natural Light abundant in the space. - A Place that will emphasize the concept of liberal art. Circulation Pattern: As people enter from gate 1, their flow of movement revolves around the context of the space where very few stop at the art center neglecting it’s presence.

XVI Create an art installation that emphasizes the existence of the Art Centre within the context. Direct the flow of users to the space by attracting them to an abstracted art form projected from the wall. The wall other than being an art piece serves in many functions. The form should be abstract yet functional to serve it’s purposes. Adapting the mobility of rubber foam, where it curls up and down from point of heat will be the main focal point of the pavilion where the curves will appear from. This kind of motion will be reflected on the overall form. A three dimensional wave structure is taken as a starting point of wall attachment that generates it’s form for the forces and variables around it. These forces are the flow and direction of users on site. The light creating shade and shadows on the wall. Functions the pavilion will serve: - Seating to attract users to the place. - Shading to emphasize the entrance. - Backdrop to announce on events taking place.

XIX Stage 1 of the mobility project. Creating a surface that is tree-functional
The pavilion has a smooth surface that is attached to the wall and regenerates it’s form according the function. It acts as a one surface where it has the seating then the shading and the back drop. There is some negative space created between the pavilion and the wall at the backdrop area creating not to be efficient. The structure of form cannot really self sustain itself because it’s only connected the floor at one point creating it to be imbalanced.

XX Stage 2 The form is projecting to the wall but has serves the 3 functions. The form doesn’t give th essence of a free form where it adjusts between functions smoothly. However the ergonomics of the form is not suitable with the human scale. Even though the pavilion is attached to the wall from the back it seems like it’s lacking the connection and gives the feeling that it has just been attached to the wall but not connected. The form satisfies the three functions however it lacks the connection the flooring and wall. The mobility of rubber foam can’t be projected in this form because it is more bulky than smooth and flexible.

XXIII Final Model of the mobility project. Creating an art installation pavilion
The form is resulted from the problems that stage 2 had which created this smooth flowing pavilion. The form is attached to the wall from the back taking it’s form. It has a starting point from the wall where it protrude to create a seating space then it reforms to emphasize the entrance and create a shaded place for users to pass through and into the art center. Finally it flows to create a backdrop or space for an art piece then it connects with the floor giving the feeling that it has moved from the wall and into the floor. The form is a visual presentation the reaction of rubber foam to flame where the points heated curls up and down. Looking the form profile we can notice that with the three main functions there is change in the curve profile that curls in a certain form giving the same mobility of the material.

03 Patterns of Mobility
XXXV I After finalizing the rhino model, a few parameters were added to the form to alter it and create different alternatives for the model. The pavilion has many driving forces such as flow of people within context. Few parameters were defined to take the model into grasshopper such as: -Height of Shading Element to allow passage of users into the art center - Openings of geometric pattern to allow for different function ex: seating has to have small voids in the pattern or solid patterns. The shading has to have semi open patterns to allow light in but not too much. The Exhibition spaces needs to have wide opening to put in models. -Studying the light Penetration through shaded element to emphasize entrance. - Depth of elements to allow different functions. For example, the depth of the seating area to be comfortable for seating. Defining the parameters was a step forward to create a better functioning pavilion.

XXXVI Model 1 on grasshopper
Creating 3 main curves that create the profile of the surface using graph mapper where I can adjust points on the graph to create a certain form. The first curve used is mainly the outline of the three curves, the second one is used to adjust the heights of the points on the curve and third curve is mainly used to develop the depth of the pavilion. Adding attraction points on the entrance and middle of seating area to be able to have a fixed point where the curves curl up and down based on. Adding a triangular pattern on the surface to fulfill the functional needs. Creating a variety in the openings of the triangular patterns again by using attraction point as a set parameter to were the opening need to get big and small.

XLI Model 2 on grasshopper
The same technique was used with model 2 with changes in the variable values and the curve profiles which resulted into the second alternative of the same form. The variations in opening size of the pattern in the model is very clear however the main problem is the structure of the form to self sustain itself a long with the loads it will carry. The major adjustment in this variable was the attraction point related to the geometric pattern that created a pulse in the size

XLV Model 3 on grasshopper
The final model has the best outcome because the parameters are all set to work with each other to create the form. The variations in opening is very obvious in this model from extremely large on th the left to almost solid patterns on the right. The structure of the model is more stable because it has more than one point touching the ground. The pavilion itself will be hung from the wall which will make it well supported. The main adjustment in this form is the movement of the attraction point affecting the curve shapes along with variation in the 3 curve shapes,
