In this stage we researched the “Sailing Stones Phenomenon to be able to determine parameters to guide our project. Stage 1: Phenomenon Experimentation

3 The Sailing Stones phenomenon is simply the movement of the stones without any human interference.

Stones are composed of dolomite & syenite, the same materials up the surrounding mountains. They crumble down due to the forces of erosion. Movement is the result of a balance between: ice, water & wind. Stones leave trails of movement behind. A balance of very specific conditions is thought to be needed for stones to move. This balance has to happen between a flooded surface, a thin layer of clay, wind, ice flows and the warming temperatures causing ice breakup.

4 All the parameters that where concluded from the research are the following: 1- Soil Saturation Overnight Fully saturated soil Inducing layer of ice ( between rock and surface) Parameters: Submergence of rock should not be more than (0.7 - 1.2 cm) Range would vary according to rock shape 2- Wind Wind causes motion and shape and wind direction affect directionality Parameters: A minimum of 2 m/sec and a maximum of 6 m/sec to avoid unrhythmic motion Can reach 15 m/sec 3- Temperature Effect through the day External environment temperature acting as a catalyst to the formation of the slimy frictionless layer between rock and acting surface Parameters: Between 5-12C in order to avoid snow formation or over flooding of water

6 In our experiment, we concluded that we need to create the exact same conditions to be able to successfully receive the movement we want. The rocks that were located on sand did not move since the sand was very dry and absorbed all the water. The shape and size of the rock also played a role in the movement and rotation of the rock. The surface and texture of the rock was also a key parameter in the movement or rotation of the rock.

In this stage we are aiming to choose a location from the three given court yards in the SSE that suits our idea and design approach the most. Stage 2: Site Selection

11 Site Analysis

Since we are supposed to design a design studio for architecture students at the American University in Cairo, I chose to locate it next to the most vibrant and popular social hubs on campus, the “steps”. The area around the steps and the kiosk “quick” is a center for social gatherings, student activities and still close to our department, yet exposed to other majors and department to encourage student engagements and new friendships. The site has special circulation routes since there in a classroom right in the middle of the courtyard. Almost all SSE students have experienced going through that courtyard and do not mind the small walk to reach the department.

Sketching out basic zoning and analysis about the chosen court yard to start designing the space and encourage the creation of public pathways in unused zones.

In this stage we are aiming to translate the outcomes of the research and site analysis into architectural parameters that will drive and guide our design. Stage 3: Form Generation

17 First attempt to create a form with different textures and functions.

Curved roof to create shaded areas for social interaction

Glazed roof to maximize daylight for more productivity

Exterior shell creating “cave-like zones for private seating

Rectilinear movable cubes serving as seating, tables or shelves for students to become creative outdoors

In this stage, the form of the building gets matured and further designed to suit the use, the driving concept and the parametric requirements. Stage 4: Form Progress

20 Precedents These precedents were chosen and studied since they reflect the juxtaposition between rough and smooth surfaces creating a special balance. This is the kind of balance that I am aiming to achieve with my studio design between the roughness and harshness of the studio work and brutal hours of work and the bright, smooth student life on campus that architecture students often miss, since they spend a large amount of hours in closed studios, isolated from all the student activities and fun hubs.

Final Design Drawings

The architectural studio is located in the court yard leading to the “steps” and “quick” where most of the social activities take place. The building allows circulation from both sides, encouraging social activities under its’ shading wallsdesigned in curves that create seating and shading for students to interact.

30

Ground Floor Plan The entrance for the studio space wil be in between the movable plates creating openings in the walls whenever appropriate. Students will be able to adjust the openings to their needs (moving materials, building models,...).
