May Fagelnour Architecture Student

Architecture for me is the art behind the buildings the reason why I chose it is because I believe architects have the keys to produce a brighter future and have the power to change the world’s behaviour and people’s attitudes by guiding them in every step they take inside and outside the building. It’s not just about walls and slabs it’s way deeper than that. As for parametric design is a process based on algorithmic thinking that enables the expression of parameters and rules that, together, define, encode and clarify the relationship between design intent and design response. In this course we were learnt the basics of how to transfer

parametric designs and dreams into real, functional and beneficial buildings. Starting from the bottom and now I am able to translate my dreams and parameters using rhino and grasshoper. Rhino is particularly useful for additive manufacturing, but this program can actually be used for many different applications. It is an accurate 3D modeling software, perfect to design or for engineering analysis and it also provides deep analysis and visualization features. Learning to use it by priliminary steps and trials until we are finally there was the key for thoughts, parameters and understanding what is really parametric design and utilizing the power behind it and the strategies of it. For me I believe that this course is very useful espicially in long term projects that will surely come ahead in our career lives. In its simplest definition, parametric architecture creates a system of so-called “parameters” or variables and a set of constraints to produce an outcome (say a geometric shape like a cube) that can be modified by changing the variables

Star Motion-Galaxies inspiration

The different shapes form constellations which changes periodically as the entire sky rotates about a point.

SITE LOCATION Wadi-Elhitan

The reason why I chose this site is that it is full of gakaxies explorations and star-gazing location in the unique location of the planet.

INSPIRATION Candela by zaha hadid a sinuous concrete shell as part of the firm’s first exhibition in both mexico and latin america. the structure is titled ‘KnitCandela’, a name that alongside the design of the pavilion pays homage to acclaimed architect and engineer félix candela. the experimental scheme re-imagines candela’s inventive concrete shell structures through the introduction of new computational design methods and formwork technology. KnitCandela’ was built on an ultra-lightweight knitted formwork that was carried to mexico from switzerland in a suitcase. the project’s dynamic geometry not only references félix candela’s restaurant at xochimilco, but also the fluid forms of the colorful traditional dress of jalisco a neighboring state fringing the pacific ocean. ‘while candela relied on combining hyperbolic paraboloid surfaces (‘hypars’) to produce reusable formworks leading to a reduction of construction waste, KnitCrete allows for the realization of a much wider range of anticlastic geometries,’ explains zaha hadid architects. ‘with this cable-net and fabric formwork system, expressive, freeform concrete surfaces can now be constructed efficiently, without the need for complex molds. KnitCandela’s thin, double-curved concrete shell with a surface area of almost 50 sqm and weighing more than 5 tonnes, was applied on a KnitCrete formwork of only 55 kg.’ the hybrid and ultra-lightweight KnitCrete formworks are easily transportable, reduce the need for additional supporting structure and scaffolding, and simplify the logistics on the construction site.’

Fabrication of the shelter is mainly fabric and wood structure hyperbeloid form of wood. The reason behind choosing these materials is the location of place.

A section showing the homogenous form which can be folded and moveable accourding to the function.

A night photo for the shelter in wadi-elhitan.

This shot is made to show how the exposed common area at morning is designed to allow the users to experience the environment in the site with the opennings in the structure which allows sun rays to path with sufficient sun. Moreover, the experience of the materials and fabric tent at night which acts harmaniously in the location itself. The opennings in the shell differs from place to place accourding to the function. The place is designed to be a shelter for the homeless is designed to accomodate all their needs and allow the best experience in the place. The big entrance is the main entrance which is easily accessible by the people. however the shelter itself is closed and the services area has a secondary entrance for servicing the people there, not just a place where they can live and sleep it needs to be more than that espicially being located in this beautiful location .

22 Thermobimetals are chosen to be our type of panel research as it consists of everything we need. The panels open up when the sunrays comes and closes when the sun rays or heat is not there. This is the opposite of what a screen should perform. As a result, we decided to use two metals opposie to each other. The higher heat coefficient is on the front and the lower heat coefficient is on the back side. Bras and metal sheets were experimented. Here shows a regular screen shader, it fails due to the accumulation of heat rays in the wall and therefore to the building.

This is solved by the chimney effect where the hotter rays gets out and the cold gets in by this effect. The thermobimetals are enviornmental friendly and helps in this effect, whereas it repels the heat out and stores the cold weather in. When we experimented this by metal sheets, it was found out that it expends with heat and stores cold temperature along with it’s motion direction which opens up with the ehat rays that is solved by the usage of 2 metals and replacing according to openning direction.

The research was based on 3 components main ones are the perforated with small opennings, moveable and constant. second comes the less heat coefficient facing material as mentioned above. Third the more heat coefficient material of metal. This is based according to the direction of sun and the direction of openning we want to allow for the building accourding to the functions inside of the building. We switch between the 3 parts.

The three components are shown in the picture, the usage of less heat coefficient metal, using more heat coefficient metal and finally the perforated metal sheets along with the maximized angles for shading.

The model here is designed parametrically inside with the parts that has the led light sheets and biggest opennings. The parts with the maximized shading angled panels are pertruded outside the building with studied functions inside. The parts of the model with the perforated sheets has the terraces and common areas around while the parts with the metal sheets opennable has the functional parts around like offices or working areas.

My main inspiration was the self shading panels which has the main inputs of the thermobimetals along with a more flexible and interesting designs.

THERMOBIMETALS STUDY SHADING SCREEN

03 CHAPTER THREE Actual shading screen

37 FINAL SUBMISSION OF THE SHADING PANEL OF BLOOM BANK

First, my main parameters are the solar analysis and the shading analysis. the solar analysis is the parameter that controls the openning sizes of the panel along with their placament and direction in the facade. Second, the shading analysis along with the optimization is the second parameter and this what controls the pertrusion and the intrusion of the Etfe panels which allow the self shading for other etfe panels and the openning adjusted sized reflected glass panels. The idea of the self shading is processed through the pertsuions and intrusions of the triangular panels with relation to each other. The materials are etfe a trunslscent material for relfection, reflective glass for the openning sized panels and metal frame for the structure of the whole panel. The functions are adjusted behind. the area with the openning panels allow terraces and social areas around, while the closed transluscent ones allow functionality behind. The experience in the building is different, the floors conections with the panels allow different experience in floors.
