Omar Mohamed Architecture Student Architecture school is a journey that requires dedication, patience, passion, and break downs. It is a joruney where you get to question the space around you, time and its effects on behavior and the environement, and you also get to question yourself, your beleifs, your capabilities, and of course your dedication to what your doing and what the responsibility that would be given to you when you graduate. It is an intense and delicate journey, but definetly worth the effort and passion that is put.

Ì am Omar Khaled Mohamed, a senior architecture student at AUC. As a “dreamer” , or rather I would like to use the word observer. There was always this moment for me, before getting into architecture school, where I would be in the car, hanging out with my friends, or walking in the street, when I would just pause for few seconds to look around me, contextualize myself and see what can is created from the environement around, the built, the landscape, the weather, and the people walking. It was always a trail from my side to understand the context I am in, to even question sometimes the choices made in this specific environement; the choice of material, color, or even the placement of a shelf or a seating. This is where my journey of question, observing, and the word “dreaming” started, and I found Architecture school to be the right context for me to do this on a daily basis, in times when I wanted to do it and in times when I was obliged to.

Welcome to my 473 Storybook, where I get to experiment with materials, time, space, and form.

The Final itiration of the first project was about trying to synthesize between the techniques and concepts used in the inital experiments; however, this itiration required the experimentation with design parameters for a facade.

16

This itiration was the beginning of parametric thinking and how to have parameters that control the overall design and can change respectively.

17

Synthesizing between fabric and casting was derived from the previous expriments with the added parameters.

After researching and understanding the dynamics of the dwarf chameleon’s skin changing cell structure, it was then about deriving design parameters that respons to the dynamics of the chameleon’s color changing properties. This research relly helped us understand the different parameters that lead to to the changes in the chameoleon’s cell formations that would then reflect and refract light.

The first phase was to understand the context and start analyzing the behavioral patterns. Thhe initial analysis deriven was the mobility of the users of the space ( staff and students mainly). From the analysis of the users’ mobility a pattern of motion and stillness was derived; in the center, the motion is from the plaza towards the classroom mostly during the day, with some students resting on the sides of the space. In addition, during assembly hour the motion was from the inside out, with more students sitting in the edges of the space. The concept was to capitalize on these difference, linking them to the different drivers that affected the change in the chameleon’s skin and accomodate these different inputs and how they could be visually linked without interrupting the travelling of the students and staff from and to the building.

50 Looking back at the previous projects, certain parametric notions were driven: Final Itiration in Project 1: The notion of having a base of a cell and adding parameters to move the center of the base in the x,y,z directions giving different forms based on certain givens. In addition, the form of the final itiration of the rigid members with the fabric connecting them along with the openings. Project 2: Having a modular grid (bases) and distroting it based on functions and certain givens to change the overall form, along with the use of fabric.

Reflecting the staggering of the panels and the structure onto the slab cuts required different zoning and additions of glazing techniques which referred to the cavity dimensions in the initial research. The relationship of the Skin with the slabs was through a main structural grid connecting the panels together and with the ground and the building and then through a series of cavities with different dimensions allowing for the manipulation of wind throughout the skin
