parametric designs and outcomes which brings us to the last stage which is the parametric modeling where I was supposed to identify the parametric logic for my proposed design with all the relations and parameters using Grasshopper. During the whole course, I learned many new things that was not easy to take all in especially because they were all new to me. However, I came to know that there are several aspects that we should take in consideration before actually starting to design, such as the rules, relations, constraints and parameters of my design.

I am Heba, an architecture student, and as an architecture student, this course have been very helpful in many ways. First, I was able to physically Experiment with different materials in order to understand material behavior upon applying different stimuli. This was very new to me, I almost never tried on multiple experimentations on materials in order to learn from their reactions and then use it as tool to inform and drive design solutions in a computational medium. I was then able to model and fabricate installation based on the material mobility. This was very challenging as using Rhino as tool to do so was not that easy. I always use Revit and Photshop to complete my design process . But using such tool was very new and very helpful in creating more

through every stage I may have struggled a bit. However, it was only because I was Learning and taking in a lot of new stuff that I need to actually practice before being able to come up with my desired outcome. First, I learned how to actually use Rhino, that I had to practice for a while and conduct multiple trials and errors in order to finally achieve what I want. Second, through turning my design into a parametric one, I had to actually practice using Grasshopper that took also multiple conductions and a lot of time to finally get where I wanted. Besides all this, I have learned many new things that ‘I am sure are very helpful for many design outcomes that are yet to come.

3 Chosen Site: Pathway leading to registrar at AUC...

The reason I chose the site was because it is a very popular site, students like to sit there most of their time, however, the place is missing many factors such as shade and maybe more seatings. on the other hand, there are fixed seatings that are located in the pathway leading to the registrar but they are of no use because of their location, they are not emphasized and thus students do not use them... This lead me to the idea of creating a design that would actually emphasize these fixed seatings in a way that would lead students more towards them as well as offer them the shade and maybe more comfortable seatings..

4 After experimenting with several materials, I chose the Pu foam as it was the most interesting for me. The material showed different characteristics that were very interesting and inspired me to develop an idea for my design...Such characteristics differ like the mobility of the material and how it reacted under different circumstances. What was the most interesting to me was how it reacted after drying, it created a smooth and flowy surface as well as bubbles and holes started to form on the surface creating an interesting shape that lead me to to the idea of creating a design that has the same language of smoothness in its surface as well as openings that would allow for maybe environmental adaption such as light and wind entry having the same language of the holes that was created from the Pu foam. What was missing was a layer of attraction, and how will my design attract students from from distance and will make them want to come and pass by the transition to see what is behind it.. This is the stage where I took into consideration the honeycomb pattern as my natural inspiration. The honeycomb mainly is known that its a method of attraction and something that is consider to be natural and attractive.

02 Stage 02 Capturing Mobility ARCH 473/3522 - Fall 2018

8 I first created the model using Rhino through creating ellipsoid by diameter to create a geodesic shape and then I subtracted elements to create the holes that I want. The second step was to draw the pattern of hexagons and then project it over the surface. Finally, by using loft and patch, the hexagonal shape where created on the surface then joined all together to connect all the surfaces together. The model I came up with mainly covered all the aspects that I was looking for in my design such as shade, openings to allow sunlight and mainly visually attractive for students to actually want to go through it.

I first developed the same model I designed into a parametric one in grasshopper considering multiple parameters respecting environmental adaption such as, openings respecting sunlight and changes in pattern size also in regards with the sun. Another parameter was the openings leading people through the transitions. However, there were many issues first I had to study the sun path and add layers of parameters that would actually result in the final outcome that I want. These parameters was decided by the sun, such as pattern size, pattern thickness and size of openings. Flow and Experience of people such as height and gateway opening’s size. And finally, maybe an addition of functional aspects such as seatings.

22 The first iteration mainly covered all the parameters that I wanted to cover. First, environmentaly, I tried controlling the openings so that I would have less openings in the direction of the sun and more toward the north that would allow for light entery but not too much light as well as allows for wind entery. The pattern size also on the other hand increases as you go from the seating area toward the transition zone. The pattern thickness however, increases when there is more sunlight to allow heat absorption and to block strong heat waves and light coming from the South direction. Moreover, taking into consideration the experience of the user. An addition of height parameter was added so that the height as you enter would be more than when you walk out creating a more eading experience.

26 In this iteration I focused mainly on the environmental factors and how my design would adapt to it. The parameters are the same as the first iteration including the pattern size that mainly increased when facing the sun for more reflection of light. The pattern thickness as well increased at the surface with the most sunlight hitting on. The openings on the other hand were more towards the area with the least sun to allow for light and wind entry but not too much light however. The openings do not only allow light but also wind as it is located in the north, where the least sunlight is. This iteration mainly focused on the environmental factors and how the pavilion would adapt to it.

30 Moving on to the this iteration, I mainly focused on the functional aspects. Different parameters where used such as the pattern size that decreased as you go towards the seating area creating seating spaces. As well as the pattern thickness that increased as well towards the seating area to allow for more functional usage outside such as shelving and seating d from the inside as the protrusions allow for space inside to sit down. Moreover, the openings where more towards the seating area to allow for more social interactions between people who are sitting and others passing by. The height parameter on the other hand plays a very important role as it gives some sort of a leading experience having a higher height as you enter and as you go out the hight is less. Mainly. this iteration did not focus on any other aspects other than the functionality of the Pavilion towards students or users in general.
