design intent The Cloud Lab is designed as a multi-functional urban platform that integrates the old and the new. It is first separated into three different program typologies; public, semi - private, and private. The program typologies are then vertically stacked with the most private functions occurring at the top of the structure. Each typology creates its own identity and character therefore requiring separate strategies in terms of daylighting and electric lighting. The overall intent is to blur boundaries through translucent materials and controlling the light through architecture creating buoyancy, airiness, and lightness.

The private top program typology is intended for permanent users and hosts the lighting laboratory as well as work + learning spaces. Within the whole top area, daylight is mitigated through aperture and internal shading systems. The glass is highly reflective creating a dialogue between the building and the surrounding context. The electrical lighting enforces the concept of floating and lightness by creating volumes within volumes through diffuse and indirect light.

semi - private The semi-private middle portion of the Cloud Lab houses the exhibition + gallery space, which welcomes temporal and permanent users. The space welcomes low angles of daylight and excludes high angles that provide an excess of direct heat gain. The ceiling is faceted, perforated, brushed aluminum, which will allow the light to refract and illuminate further into the space. The perforation allows for indirect illumination that provides uniformity throughout the space

design intent The 24 hour Union Library, located in Union Square New York is designed to use as many natural elements as possible, from daylight, wind ventilations, and vegetation in order to create a sustainable building with the smallest environmental impact. To achieve the design, the structure contains on open courtyard which incorporates a stacked helical program. Therefore, at any given time of the year the facada does not recieve 100% of the sunlight, reducing direct sunlight in summer along with thermal heat gain. As in the winter, the structure allows for relfected and diffuse light to enter. Additionaly, the set-back facade and the cut corner maximize daylight. The courtyard acts as main outlet for stack ventilation and provides a space for reflected and refracted sunlight to enter the libary.

design intent Modern Vintage is the combination of the tradiational and the contemporary style infused with Design House Stockhom’s clean and simple design aesthetic. Our mission is to create a warm and welcoming environment by blending vintage materials and style with modern ideals and technology. Where the vintage is revealed. When first entering one will be greated by a warm white glow transitioning from exterior to interior. Upon arriving in the flex and retail space there will be highlights of warm and cool lights accenting merchandise and architectural features. The stairwell wil be highlighed with a chanderlier that will amplify the design aesthetic of DHS creating the warm glow we associate with comfort. The second floor will serve as a more private area that will consist of offices and lounges for empolyees. The lighting will be clean and cooler and in some intances hidden further enhancing the concept of Modern Vintage.

design intent The Pin Up Space (1) on the 3rd floor of 25 E 13th St. is under utilized and does not fulfill any particular task. It is poorly lit and does not emit a feeling of welcome, as well as a place where one may linger. It was our goal to turn this space into an actual Pin Up location for students to display their work as well as a space that would draw the eye and the person rather then acting as a transitional space. In order to achieve this we have undertaken the concept of “Floating Walls.” Where on large canvas and two smaller ones would be lit from the back using a LED source to emit a glow onto the wall. This would seemingly project the canvas further from the wall as to appear they are floating. In order to define the space we have chosen to highlight an architectural feature, the columns. Using AR70 spotlights, we have grazed the columns, to maintain the coolness of the LEDs the spotlight required a gel to balance the color temperature. In addition we have also included floodlights in the form of PAR30 lamps. This was to highlight the floating walls and e visible when used for presentations. Using this combination of lights and lamps we have achieved our desired effect in attracting the passerby and creating an individual space in what may be considered a transitional space.

design intent The Conifer Luminare is a directional spot light that emits 200 - 250 lumens of illumination. It can be used as a spotlight in high end retail stores as well as in residential applications.It has the ability to swing 360ยบ around on a mounted surface and has 180ยบ of up and down movement. This allows the luminaire to be flexible in terms of directionality as well as decoratvie. The luminaire is made of opaque plastic near the base, it then gradual becomes further translucent. With the gradual move to translucency the luminaire also emits a softglow.The base and swivel are made of metal and can be manufactured in silver or black.

design intent In our investigation of the site, we found that pedestrian movement is the m ain method of short-distance transportation in the ralative area. Building from this idea we discussed the various planes within the city on which pedestrian movement takes place. Since the majority of pedestrian movement normally takes place on the street level, our project takes advantage of the novel perspective and understanding of the cityscape that would result from changin the plane from which pedestrians and occupants of the site would relate to their surroundings. We identified several main planes, namely the EL level, the roof levels of the adjacent buildings, a subterranean level, and a plane that would rise above all the adjacent planes. In order to generate a form, we explored the act of moving from one plane to another in a smooth gesture. This led to the hexagon, a basic flexible unit of form whose variations create the space necessary to fulfill the programatic requirements while encouraging the movement on and between planes. The path through the site is defined by the major entry point from pedestrian corridors and the primary destinations within the program of the structure. These include the commercial spaces, residences, various multi-use, and green space. Furthermore, the complex program is organized by the various planes of elevation. The total effect is a unique steel construct which expands the horizons of the users while fulfilling their needs.
