Silangan Kicks Off UE’s 65th Foundation Anniversary
‘Remembering Rizal’ Artfully Portrays Nat’l Hero
Rizal Remembered The program’s participants— including Dean Julian Abuso, Dean Amado Valdez, Dir. Mercy Candelaria and Dir. Anna Tabita Piquero— gather onstage for the finale and group bow
Kick-off day of UE’s 65th Foundation Anniversary featured Remembering Rizal, a grand show commemorating the life of our National Hero, on September 9, 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the UE Theatre. The elaborate program, which ran for about an hour and a half, showcased the University’s cultural groups under the Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA), namely the UE Chorale, UE Band, the UE Silanganan Dance Troupe, the UE Drama Company, as well as Teatro Silangan of the Elementary and Secondary Laboratory Schools. Interspersed in the program were monologues given by College of Law Dean Amado D. Valdez, College of Arts and Sciences-Caloocan Dean Julian V. Abuso, Student Affairs Office-Manila Director Mercy L. Candelaria and College of Education Secretary Cynthia Grace L. Diaz. Conceptualized by OCA Director and Dance Troupe Director-Choreographer Generoso A. Caringal, the program was divided into seven main parts, namely the Overture, “Intramuros in the Time of Rizal,” “Rizal as a Young Boy,” “Rizal the Romantic,” “Rizal the Writer,” “Ako’y Gamu-gamo” and the Finale, “Heroes Then and Now.” T h e O ve r t u r e u n ve i l e d a slideshow featuring quotes from a number of UE officers about their thoughts on Jose Rizal with orchestral music from the UE Band. “Intramuros in the Time of Rizal” presented a backgrounder of Manila during Rizal’s time, particularly the famed Walled City. Dean Abuso, dressed as and assuming the demeanor and language of an ilustrado, described Manila life during the 1800s. The UE Silanganan Dance Troupe then gave a complementary visual rendition. In the “Rizal as a Young Boy” segment, Prof. Diaz and members of Teatro Silangan then shed light on the influence on the young Pepe by his brother Paciano. More important, this part highlighted the childhood
8
of Rizal, as well as the events that shaped him, particularly the Gomburza execution and the incarceration of Teodora Alonso. This portion likewise portrayed the tight bond between Jose and Paciano, and how Paciano’s influence molded the young Jose into a patriotic and responsible individual. Teatro Silangan has ESLS Teacher Yodelherson B. Mortiga as Artistic Director. The UE Chorale then serenaded the crown with love songs via “Rizal, the Romantic.” The segment also gave a glimpse of the different women wooed by Rizal, from his first love to his eventual wife, Josephine Bracken. The UE Chorale was led by the group’s Musical Director and Conductor, Mrs. Anna Tabita V. Abeleda-Piquero.
“Rizal the Writer” showed excerpts from Rizal’s letters to his family and friends. Dean Valdez provided insight on some of Rizal’s traits as evidenced by these letters, such as his value for art, his generosity and his love for his parents. The UE Drama Company, for its part, portrayed certain chapters of Rizal’s debut novel Noli Me Tangere. Prof. Frederick R. Castro heads the Drama Company as Company Director. For the “Ako’y Gamu-Gamo” segment, Dir. Candelaria gave a dramatic retelling of the famous story of “The Moth and the Gas Lamp” as imparted by Teodora Alonzo to the young Jose. The UE Silanganan Dance Troupe then gave a creative take on this as well, relating how fire
and the gas lamp provided solace for Rizal during his incarcerated at Fort Santiago, leading up to his execution, with flashbacks of Rizal’s fond memories of his mother interspersed within the performance. The section ends with the execution of Rizal at Bagumbayan. The execution then segued to the Finale, where all of the performers gathered on stage to pay their respects to the fallen martyr while singing a medley of “O Bayan Ko” and “Lupang Hinirang,” in the process conveying the message that each and every one of us can be a hero in our own right. Remembering Rizal was staged for the third and last time on September 19 at the UE Theatre.
Rizal Park is Central Point of Anniversary Week’s Kick-off UE kicked off the main week of its 65th Foundation Anniversary celebration with activities held at the Rizal Park, Manila on September 25, 2011. Given the anniversary theme, “Jose Rizal, Nasa Puso ng UE,” the activities were aimed at giving due recognition and respect to the Philippines’ national hero while raising public awareness about UE’s anniversary. Students, faculty members, employees and officers gathered at the Manila Campus to formally start the festivities via a motorcade from UE Manila to Fort Santiago. UE’s vehicles such as the UE Technobus, the Red Warriors bus, the College of Dentistry bus and the OECO bus were joined by private vehicles owned by officers, faculty members and students as they paraded down the streets of Manila on the way to Fort Santiago, where Rizal had spent his last moments. At the Rizal Park, UE officers gathered at the Rizal Monument for the ceremonial wreath-laying. Headed by UE President Ester Garcia, Mayor Lim, Dr. Tanchanco, Chancellor Santiago and Chancellor Battad, they were accompanied by Mr. Reghis M. Romero II of the Knights of Rizal as
they offered a wreath to the tomb of the National Hero. The community then gathered at the Luneta Ampitheatre for a short program and a dance contest. In his welcome remarks there, Dr. Tanchanco reminded everyone to put Rizal in their hearts and to follow his example. The same message was echoed by President Ester Garcia in her talk, as she challenged the UE community to put into practice Rizal’s teachings and philosophies. The dance competition featured five groups, most of whom are named after characters from Rizal’s novels. The teams named Simoun (representing the University Student Council-Manila) and Sisa (Casual Employees and Student Assistants) both took home consolation prizes. The University formally jumpstarted its 65th Foundation Anniversary with the re-unveiling of the Jose Rizal bust at the Rizal Hall on September 9, at 9 a.m. The bust’s likeness in UE Caloocan was likewise re-unveiled, on September 13, 2 p.m., at the UE Caloocan Administration Building. Mr. Michael G. Tan, President and Chief Operating Officer of Asia Brewery, was the guest of honor at UE Manila’s unveiling. Also present were UE officials led by President Ester A. Garcia, Manila Campus Chancellor Linda P. Santiago, Marketing Department Executive Director Jesus T. Tanchanco Sr. and
deans, directors and other officers, as well as Mr. Jerry G. Codiñera, the Head Coach of the UE Red WarriorsMen’s Basketball Team. The re-unveiling actually called for a refurbishment of the busts and their respective stands, and was in line with the University’s 65th Foundation Anniversary theme, “Jose Rizal, Nasa Puso ng UE,” and was an occasion to enhance each landmark. The theme’s concept was a brainchild of Dr. Tanchanco, who is the Chairman of the Anniversary’s Steering Committee. In charge of the refurbishment of the busts were Office of Cultural Affairs Director Generoso A. Caringal, who was also
the Co-Chairman of the said Steering Committee, and College of Fine Arts Dean Celino B. Santiago. A fixture at the Rizal Hall, the previous Rizal bust’s stand was made of concrete and painted white. The bust’s improved stand was designed by Dean Santiago and is made of concrete with an outer layer of granite. Its marker, formerly at the foot of the bust, is now held up by two metal poles. Construction work for the new bust commenced in August and was finished early September. Similar enhancements were done to the bust’s stand in UE Caloocan. The re-unveiling of the bust

UE-Tan Yan Kee Scholars, Grantees Formall
For the past 12 years, the freshmen scholars and grantees of the UE-Tan Yan Kee Foundation Inc. scholarship program gathered together to be formally recognized by the officers of both the University and the TYKFI at an annual recognition program. This year, however, the 13th year in a row, the occasion was doubly special, as 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the TYKFI. The event carried the Foundation’s anniversary theme, “Silver Reflections,” which is also the title of the commemorative coffeetable book about the TYKFI. The momentous occasion took place last September 20, starting at 1:30 pm, at the Grand Ballroom of the Century Park Hotel in Manila. Present were the officers of UE and the TYKFI, led by Dr. Lucio C. Tan, UE’s Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer and the TYKFI’s Chairman and

President; distinguished guests of both institutions; the scholars and grantees who are studying at UE Manila, UE Caloocan as well as the UE Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center Inc. (UERMMMCI) along with PNB scholars under the auspices of the Philippine National Bank; the students’ parents or guardians; continuing UE-TYKFI scholars and grantees; and former UE-TYKFI scholars and grantees turned working professionals. (UE’s new scholars and grantees for SY 2011-2012 are in the boxed list on page 11.) The entire program kicked off with a celebratory lion dance, followed by the invocation delivered by Maura G. Gonzales, a grantee taking up at the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy program at the UE College of Business AdministrationManila. Then came the singing of the Philippine national anthem led by the UE Chorale, followed by the welcome remarks of TYKFI Vice Chairman and Executive Director Harry C. Tan. The UE Silanganan Dance Troupe then rendered a Muslim dance, followed by a “Silver Reflections” audiovisual presentation about the TYKFI. One of the program’s highlights came thereafter: the launch of the coffeetable book Silver Reflections: The Tan Yan Kee Foundation Inc. at 25. Brief introductory remarks on the commemorative tome were given by Mr. Harry Tan, followed by the signing by Dr. Lucio Tan of

25 copies that were given away to the attending heads or representatives of 25 TYKFI partner institutions, in acknowledgement of their support for the Foundation in its first quartercentury. That acknowledgement was capped with a toast to the Foundation and its partner institutions by UE Vice Chairman and TYKFI Treasurer Jaime J. Bautista. A two-part intermission followed. First was an indigenous Cañao dance featuring students of the Tan Yan Kee Elementary School along with their parents and councilors and elders of Barangay Balate, Santa Fe in Nueva Vizcaya. The School is based in that barangay of the said mountainous province. Second was a brief but lively set by the UE Chorale. The audience sought an encore each from both sets of performers. Then came another highlight of the afternoon, the ceremonial handover of scholarship support to the new UE-TYKFI scholars and grantees by Dr. Lucio Tan and his wife Carmen K. Tan. This has always been the opportunity for the scholars and grantees and their parents or guardians to meet their benefactor up close as well as shake his hand and personally express their gratitude. Likewise enjoying this privilege that afternoon were former UE-TYKFI scholars Marrion U. Abong and Abigail Sandra D. Yao, who are both UERMMMCI-TYKFI scholars in their first year as UERM College of Medicine students. Acknowledged as well during the program were the continuing UE-TYKFI scholars of the University’s Manila and Caloocan Colleges, followed by the recognition of the PNB scholars. Giving the response on behalf of all of the scholars and grantees is Ms. Mona Lisa G. Sabañico, a former UE-TYKFI scholar while she studied to earn her Bachelor in Secondary Education, major in Math degree from the UE College of Education and who is now a high school teacher at the UE Elementary and Secondary Laboratory Schools and is a UETYKFI grantee as she pursues her Master of Arts in Teaching, major
in Mathematics studies at the UE Graduate School. After being introduced by Mr. Jaime Bautista, Dr. Lucio Tan went on to deliver his inspirational message which was directed to the scholars and grantees, as well as to their parents and/or guardians and mentors. Serving as the master of ceremonies for the entire program was Prof. Mercy L. Candelaria, the Director of UE Manila’s Student Affairs Office. Prior to this grand September event, a general assembly of the UE-TYKFI freshman scholars and grantees was held last July 15 at the Briefing Room in UE Manila. This was one of the activities for scholars and grantees organized by the UE Guidance and Counseling Office in collaboration with the Admissions Office. This activity held every July is a good venue for the new scholars and grantees to be recognized by UE’s academic officials, specifically the President, the UE Manila and UE Caloocan Chancellors and all the Deans of the students’ respective Colleges. Teambuilding and socialization activities, as well as psycho-spiritual activity, are also prepared for the UE-TYKFI scholars and grantees, to address the unique needs and concerns of these UE students, particularly in sustaining their motivation to study well so they can maintain their scholarship. True enough, the idea of organizing the UE-Tan Yan Kee scholars and grantees that was born in 2008 has paved the way to more active and supportive scholars and grantees as they become more purposeful and concerned with each other’s welfare. The Tan Yan Kee Foundation Inc. was established in 1986 by Dr. Lucio C. Tan in honor of the Tan Family patriarch, the late Tan Yan Kee. As the corporate social responsibility arm of the Lucio Tan Group of Companies (LTGC), the Foundation’s principal projects are in support of education, culture and sports, research, health and social welfare, and manpower development. For the past 25 years, the

Foundation has been carrying out its mission with generous support and donations from the LTGC. Through the years, it has donated hundreds of millions of pesos to finance scholarship grants, training teachers and doctors, and renovating and constructing school buildings, hospitals, churches and houses for the homeless. It also provides calamity assistance, livelihood training, environmental protection drives, antivice campaigns and other programs for social development. A full-fledged non-governmental organization accredited by the P h i l i p p i n e C o u n c i l f o r NGO Certification, the TYKFI has evolved to keep pace with changing trends and societal needs. The Foundation has since been ranked as among the Philippines’ largest philanthropic non-government organizations. And consistent with its desire to be part of the local as well as the global NGO community, the Foundation took up membership with the League of Corporate Foundations (LCF) and the Association of Foundations (AF). One of the Foundation’s major projects has been the UE-Tan Yan Kee Scholarship. Since SY 1998-1999, the TYKFI has been providing such scholarships to many underprivileged but deserving college students as well as faculty members of UE—the scholars hailing not just from the National Capital Region but also from various provinces. To date, the TYKFI has spent no less than P68.1 million for the scholarship program, which includes a book allowance, uniform subsidy, transportation allowance and a monthly stipend. Tuition and other school fees are covered by UE, which has spent P98.7 million since the program’s inception in 1998. Close to 1,000 students, which include 12 faculty members and 60 grantees, have benefited from the program. Inquiries regarding the UETYKFI scholarship program are welcome at the Admissions Office of UE Manila and of UE Caloocan. (This report includes data from the TYKFI, the Admissions Office and GCO Dir. Silangan Dr. Ambeth Ocampo and our National Hero up on the UE Theatre stage
Renowned Historian Speaks on Jose Rizal at University Convocation In celebration of its 65th Foundation Anniversary which began last September, UE held its annual University Convocation this November, featuring multiawarded historian Dr. Ambeth R. Ocampo as guest speaker. His talk in the morning of November 15 at the UE Theatre tackled “Rizal and Children: Learning Head and Heart.” This event was originally slated for last September 27 but had to be postponed as classes in all levels in Metro Manila were suspended due to typhoon “Pedring.” Dr. Ocampo is also an academician, a journalist and an author best known for his writings about the Philippines’ national hero. He had served as the Chairman of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NCHP) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). He is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of History at the Ateneo de Manila University, teaching “Rizal and the Emergence of the Filipino Nation.” He is also a Professorial Lecturer in the Department of Filipino and Philippine Letters at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Dr. Ocampo earned his BA and MA in Philippine Studies from De
La Salle University-Manila. He took postgraduate subjects in UP Diliman and read for a Ph.D. in Southeast Asian History at the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies. In 1993, he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Our Lady of Monserrat, Manila, where he was known as Brother Ignacio Maria, OSB. He left the monastery in 1997. He was appointed to the Board of the National Historical Institute (NHI) in 1999 by then President Joseph Estrada. In 2002, he was appointed as the Chairman of the NHI by now former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. In 2005, he was elected Chairman of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. As NCCA Chairman, he emphasized culture as a main theme in diplomacy and was granted full powers to sign Cultural Agreements with Pakistan, Vietnam, and North Korea as well as Executive Programs on culture with France, Mexico and China. He served as Chairman of the National Historical Commission, the successor of the NHI from 2002 to 2011 and concurrently as Chairman of the NCCA from 2005 to 2007. Dr. Jesus T. Tanchanco Sr., the overall chairman of the 65th UE Foundation Anniversary’s steering
committee, gave the welcome remarks at the convocation, warmly welcoming not only Dr. Ocampo, but also the students, faculty and staff to the big event. Dr. Ocampo’s talk was a mixture of serious history and light trivia regarding Jose Rizal and the country’s other heroes, presenting them more as humans rather than icons perceived to be cast in stone and steel. In addition, Dr. Ocampo also raised questions about facts concerning Rizal, such as the poem Sa Aking Mga Kabata which he says is erroneously attributed to the national hero as well as the great man’s not-all-great grades while he was a University of Santo Tomas student. However, Dr. Ocampo’s talk, which he backed with a slideshow featuring pertinent and rare photos as well as his talking points, had as main focus Jose Rizal’s relationship with children, particularly how he interacted with his nephews and nieces while he was writing some of his greatest works such as the Noli Me Tangere. He also showed Rizal as an educator, particularly while exiled in Dapitan, and how he selected the students for his school, giving special attention to the heart and not just on intelligence alone.
Dr. Ocampo also presented the factors that molded Jose Rizal into the person he became, such as how he lived and how he studied. In addition, he showed the candid side of the national hero that people rarely get to see, such as dressing up to pose as a model for Juan Luna’s paintings or simply just having fun with friends. In closing, Dr. Ocampo posed the challenge to the UE community, especially the students, to go for greatness as Rizal and the heroes did during their young lives. He also encouraged them to study not just from the mind but also from the heart, as the mind alone cannot constitute greatness without the heart. In her closing remarks to the event, President Ester Albano Garcia thanked Dr. Ocampo for his lecture. She said that the University was privileged to have him as its speaker as we were able to relearn history and see it from a different perspective. She also expressed thanks to the University, particularly its founders in contributing to the betterment of the nation, and thanked everyone present for ensuring the success of the convocation.

Libraries Director, ‘12 Little Things’ Author Inspire Students to ‘Lead Like Pepe’
On September 28, 2011 at the Briefing Room in UE Manila, the University Student Council (USC) held its first “Arise” Leadership Conference, one of our four projects lined for UE’s 65th foundation anniversary. The conference had the theme “Leading like Pepe,” in honor of the 150th birth anniversary of our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. The objectives of this activity were to impart Rizalian values on our student leaders, foster greater ties of camaraderie among them, and to ultimately inspire them to become better leaders for their respective organizations. Participants of the conference were the presidents and vice presidents of registered school organizations in the University. The speakers were Mrs. Loreto T. Garcia, the Director of UE’s Department of Libraries, and Atty. Alexander L. Lacson, the author of 12 Little Things Every Filipino Can Do to Help Our Country. The topics discussed include the life and struggles of Dr. Rizal, the importance and impact of books to Dr. Rizal and its relevance and benefits for leaders. Dir. Loreto Garcia gave a short lecture on the importance of reading books as a means of improving leadership skills and values. She also highlighted the great relationship
between Rizal and books, how it helped him to become the Rizal whom we know today. The highlight of the event was the talk of Atty. Lacson, wherein he stressed the role of the youth in nation-building. As reflected by the evaluation forms, the event was generally successful. Typhoon “Pedring’s” wrath failed to hinder our student leaders from participating in this event. We in the USC thank our speakers and all of the participants, and we hope that the conference had been relevant and beneficial to the student leaders and their respective organizations. The USC likewise thanks the Nutrition and Dietetics students who prepared the food for the conference. In mounting the Arise Leadership Conference, the USC subscribes to and promotes modern leadership.
We believe that leaders should always be empowered by helping them to develop and discover more of their potential. We encourage every student leader on campus to rise above every challenge and go beyond their assumed limitations. We believe that thinking outside the box should be the norm and continuous development, a need. We hope to continue this endeavor and establish Arise as an annual event.—Kevin A. Mandrilla, President, SY 2011-2012, University Student Council; photo by Domingo Tan III Atty. Lacson is seen at right as he spoke about nation-building to UE student leaders; his shirt’s larger print says, “Thank God I’m a Filipino.” Above, he is seen with CBA Manila Dean Veronica Elizalde, student leaders and USC staffers and volunteers

Cultural Affairs Office Kicks Off School Year with Romeo & Juliet Ballet The UE Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) kicked off SY 20112012 with a staging Philippine Ballet Theater’s Romeo and Juliet on July 15, 2011, 3 p.m. at the UE Theatre. Based on William Shakespeare’s play, the ballet tells of star-crossed lovers who fall in love in the midst of their warring families. OCA Director Generoso A. Caringal says choosing Romeo and Juliet was to inculcate Shakespeare into the students’ consciousness, and the easiest medium is through interpretative ballet. Director Caringal also sits as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Ballet Theatre; he was previously PBT’s Artistic Director. The ballet starred two UE students: playing Romeo was Lemuel J. Capa, a BSEd student, major in PE, of the UE College of Education and a member of the UE Silanganan Dance Troupe; playing Juliet was Lorezza L. Pimentel, a 4th-year BSBA Marketing Management student of the UE College of Business AdministrationManila. Ms. Pimentel is also a graduate of the UE Elementary and Secondary
Laboratory Schools, and a former member of the ESLS Siglang Galaw Dance Troupe. The ballet company performed to an appreciative crowd who left the theater with a better under-standing of the Shakesperean tragedy. Director Caringal also shares that the UE Officials who watched the matinee performance also loved the presentation. Founded in 1987, the Philippine
Rizal, UE Pop Idol 2011 and a Musical Variety Show featuring Star Magic talents, the OCA will conduct the following: a Film Festival in November (see related below); a Choral Festival on December 1; and, in celebration of National Arts Month in February 2012: a monthlong exhibit about Dr. Jose Rizal, an On-the-Spot Painting Competition, and the UE Dance Fuzion Competition.

UE Observes Development Policy Research Month September of every year is Development Policy Research Month (DPRM), and so the University of the East joined the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS, a.k.a. the Surian ng Pag-aaral Pangkaunlaran ng Pilipinas) in the annual observance of September as DPRM. Per Malacañang Proclamation No. 247 dated September 2, 2002, September as Development Policy Research Month “provides a means of promoting and drawing nationwide awareness on the importance of policy research in national development.” This year marks the ninth DPRM, with “Back to ABCs: Education for Development” as theme. Per the PIDS letter to UE President Ester A. Garcia by PIDS President Josef T. Yap, Ph.D.: “A number of studies have indicated that education is a key lever to an individual’s having a better future and status in life, including potential higher incomes. On a larger scale, education is acknowledged to be an essential factor in a country’s fight against poverty.
Ballet Theatre is said to be the preeminent classical ballet company in the country today. It rose from the alliance of leading dance group of the 1980s and won recognition as a resident ballet company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. PBT’s Romeo and Juliet is just one of the presentations prepared by the UE OCA for this school year. In addition to that were Remembering
“Recognizing this, the 2011 theme of the DPRM focuses on the issues and challenges confronting the Philippine education sector. After several reviews and roadmaps done for the sector in the past, where does the country stand? What concerns continue to face our education leaders and decisionmakers? Does our education and its various services/aspects help our countrymen/-women address the challenges, among others, of globalization? “The DPRM, with its broadbased and nationwide outlets for discussion, may present the needed venue[s] for this active and rigorous discussion. The various studies and activities to be presented and organized during the month-long celebration of the DPRM will hopefully provide the appropriate base and support in helping to reevaluate where we are in the area of education.” More on the PIDS, which is based in Makati City, at <www.pids. gov.ph>.

Eng’g-Mla Student Council Donates to Noontime Show’s Environmental Cause
The UE Manila Engineering Student Council (ENSC) played good Samaritan when it turned over 700 kilos worth of used plastic bottles to the noontime show Eat Bulaga, specifically for the show’s “All for Juan, Juan for All: Plastic ni Juan” Project, during a brief ceremony on September 7, 2011 at the UE Manila Quadrangle. The bottles collected were part of the Mr. and Ms. Engineering Personality 2011 Pageant. The Pageant’s People’s Choice Award was determined as follows: 30% was based on the number of “likes” on Facebook and 70% was from the amount of plastic bottles collected from the candidates’ respective supporters from August 8 to 25. The Pageant Finals was held on August 26 at the UE Theatre. The aim in collecting these bottles is to aid the noontime show’s cause of collecting plastic bottles to be used in the production of environmentfriendly students’ desks. These desks will then be donated to a selected public school. A crowd of UE students and employees gathered at the Quadrangle to witness the event. “MOTHER TERESA OF THE BUDDHIST FAITH...” • Continued from page 1 In 1966, she established the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, fueled by an immense force of love for society. From a small group of 30 housewives 45 years ago, the Foundation grew to an international organization that provides charity, medical care, education, environmental support and humanitarian effort to the world’s impoverished populations. Dharma Master Cheng Yen was awarded the Eisenhower Medallion for her contributions to world peace. In 1991, she was a Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for community leadership. She was nominated in 1996 for the Nobel Peace Prize for her selfless dedication to bringing to a troubled world a renewed vision of compassion in action. She was also heralded as one of the fifty “Stars of Asia” leaders at the forefront of change in the July 2000 issue of Businessweek. The Philippine Chapter of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation was created in 1994, three years after Dharma Master Cheng Yen donated half of her $30,000 prize money (around P825,000 at the 1991 exchange rate)—for being the 1991 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Community Leadership—to the victims of the Mount Pinatubo eruption, and the other half to the flood victims in China. The award paved the way to the exposure of the Master’s compassion for the people of the Philippines. In February 2011, the Philippine House of Representatives honored the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation for its exemplary humanitarian service, especially in the wake of Tropical Storm Ondoy. At the Conferment Representing Dharma Master Cheng Yen at the conferment was her disciple Tseng Yu Chen. In attendance at the UE ceremony

Rendering the presentation the honoree was UE Graduate School Dean Avelina A. De La Rea. Delivering the address of petition for the conferment was UE Caloocan Chancellor Zosimo M. Battad, followed by the reading of the citation by UE Manila Chancellor Linda P. Santiago. The conferment proper was done by UE President Ester A. Garcia. In the presentation of the academic gown, hood and cap, President Garcia was joined by Commission on Higher Education Commissioner William C. Medrano. The medallion was presented by UE Trustee Wilson T. Young, who represented UE Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer Lucio C. Tan, and President Garcia. Corporate Secretary Divinofiel E. Jaras read the diploma. Rendering musical numbers was the UE Chorale, whose third tune was “Isang Pamilya,” a song of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation Philippines. The UE Chorale likewise led the singing of the Philippine National Anthem at the start of the program and of the UE Hymn at the end of the event. conducted by the Foundation’s Philippine chapter prior to the conferment. The exhibit, which had the Dalupan Lobby as venue, was formally opened on October 1, at 8:30 a.m. Leading the unveiling of the exhibit were President Garcia for UE and Tzu Chi Philippines CEO Li for the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation. The exhibit featured displays detailing the Foundation’s history, accomplishments and goals, as well as Tzu-Chi-produced, environment-friendly consumer items made from recycled materials and publications such as the volumes of Jing Si Aphorisms. The exhibit, which also had Tzu Chi reps on hand to elaborate about Master Cheng Yen and the Foundation for visitors’ information, ran up to October 5, conferment day. Right after the exhibit was opened on October 1, everyone proceeded to the UE Theatre for the lecture-forum organized by the Foundation itself, with UE officers and NSTP students as well as Tzu Chi representatives in the audience. With Ms. Chieh Fang Uy of the Foundation as master of ceremonies, the two-hour program began with the welcome remarks of President Garcia and a “video sutra,” a video compilation of Tzu Chi activities. Tzu Chi’s Michael Siao spoke about the Foundation’s Cash for Volunteers program, which have benefitted residents of Marikina City. Filipino volunteers of the Foundation then gave a lively songand-dance rendition of two of the Foundation’s tunes: “The Recycle Song” and “Happy Face.” This was followed by a talk about Dharma Master Cheng Yen and the Tzu Chi world by the Foundation’s CEO Alfredo Li. Young volunteers of the Foundation then modeled the
“eco apparel” produced by the Foundation, such as shirts, jackets and blankets. Tzu Chi volunteer Ana Regina So then talked about the Foundation’s livelihood program, which has helped empower many Filipinos, and a sharing by some of the Foundation’s scholars about the positive impact of Tzu Chi on their lives and their future. These scholars include Dr. Harold Fulo, who graduated from the UE College of Dentistry in April 2011 and now works at the Tzu Chi Clinic; Michael Lagunday, an AB Broadcast Communication senior at the UE College of Arts and Sciences-Manila; and BS Accounting Technology sophomore Erwin Cervantes of the UE College of Business AdministrationManila. The entire program concluded with a sign language presentation by the Foundation’s Sign Language Team that called for lively audience participation. At the end of the program, the Tzu Chi reps took part in the outreach activities lined up by the UE Office of Extension and Community Outreach (OECO) for that morning. Specifically, a joint team of UE physicians and Tzu Chi volunteerdoctors handled the dental aspect of that day’s Medical-Dental Mission (UE doctors took on the medical aspect) held at the UE Manila Medical & Dental Clinic and at the College of Dentistry, while Tzu Chi volunteers undertook the free cataract screening conducted at the Graduate School Dental Clinic. Tzu Chi reps were also on hand to witness the feeding program undertaken by the OECO at the nearby Gota de Leche along Loyola (formerly Lepanto) Street. In keeping with the Tzu Chi Foundation’s observance of vegetarianism, the food for the guests served after both the lecture-forum and the conferment were meat-free.

Coach Darwin Campana, Jessica Christia Paron and Francislyn Cais
A total of 10 teams—seven from mainland Luzon, and three from Puerto Princesa— participated in the event. Aside from UE and UP, other schools that participated include Colegio San Juan de Letran, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas and Palawan State University. The Red Warriors fielded in two teams in the competition, with BSHRM junior Ma. Leuseht M. Dawis and 3rd-year AB IS senior Mary Grace N. Masangkay composing the other team. Both are students of the UE College of Arts and Sciences-Manila. The UE Red Warriors Women’s Volleyball team is under helm of Coach Darwin T. Campana.
The UE Red Warriors-Men’s Basketball Team in UAAP Season 74: All Out, All Heart! As UAAP Season 74 Basketball drew to a close, the UE Red WarriorsMen’s Basketball Team found themselves at seventh place with a win-loss record of 3 wins and 11 losses, and landed just ahead of the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons with a record of 2-12. Unlike other teams in the league, UE’s famed Red Warriors went into battle as an all-Filipino squad. Coming from their 2nd Runnerup finish in the Asian University Basketball Championship in Bintulu, Malaysia last June 5-10, the Warriors were very optimistic about the tournament. “If we play with the same intensity as we did in Malaysia, we could win in the UAAP,” shared Team Captain Paul Zamar in an earlier interview with Silangan, after their first international tournament following the appointment of UE alumnus and himself a former Red Warrior, Jerry Codiñera (Coach Jerry’s brother Harmon Codiñera, and Billie Reyes, Gual Garcia, Ernie Laurel and Jun Vega served as Assistant Coaches. Dr. Jesus T. Tanchanco Sr., the Executive Director of UE’s Marketing Department, served as Team Manager for the third straight year.) Basketball analysts, however, had a different opinion of the team. They believed that UE was in “rebuilding” mode, given the departure of six seasoned players from last school year. They also noted the team’s performance in the pre-UAAP tournaments such as the Fil-Oil Flying V Tournament, where the Warriors were unable to beat any of the UAAP Teams. In their first outing against the UP Fighting Maroons, the team gave its best shot but lost to the State U, 6169. They would go and succumb in their succeeding games to Adamson University, Ateneo de Manila University, UAAP 74 host Far Eastern University, the University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University, giving UE a win-loss tally of 0-6. The Warriors broke their losing streak on August 6, 2011, their last game for the 1st Round. The Rectobased dribblers escaped with a lucky 72-71 stunner against the National University Bulldogs. The celebration, however, would be short-lived as the Bulldogs promptly retaliated when they faced off again a week

later for the start of the 2nd Round, overwhelming the Warriors in a 5191 blowout. Not wanting to wallow in defeat, the Warriors regrouped and faced their next opponent, the De La Salle Green Archers, on August 20. In what was to be the turning point of the Warriors’ basketball season, they defeated the Archers, 74-69, giving them a win-loss slate of 2-7. Fresh from the euphoria of this game, the Warriors faced the defending champions, the Ateneo Blue Eagles. While they lost to the Eagles, the Warriors had the closest margin of defeat among all the UAAP teams against the Eagles with four points, 70-74, not to mention that the Warriors were able to hold Ateneo at bay for the first half, even leading by four at halftime. The Warriors would drop their succeeding games against Adamson, UST and FEU, relegating our boys to the last spot but tied with UP, 2-11. Their last game of the season against the UP Fighting Maroons was to break that tie. Thus, on Sept. 10, the so-called “Battle of the Cellar Dwellers” commenced. The Warriors relied heavily on Biboy Enguio as he led the charge with 18 points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks. When the smoke cleared, the Warriors emerged victorious, 68-54. In doing so, they escaped last place which UP occupied. Despite being touted as this season’s heartbreak kids, the Warriors were not one to go down without a fight, giving their best in exemplifying the UAAP 74 theme of “All Out, All Heart.” The season saw
VICTORIOUS SPIRITS Team Manager Jesus Tanchanco Sr. (far right) makes a victory gesture post-August 20 game while Team Captain Paul Zamar and Adrian Santos hug it out
breakout performances from Adi Santos, Biboy Enguio, Roi Sumang and Chris Javier. Team Captain Paul Zamar became the go-to guy for field goals and shots, while CoCaptain Lucas Tagarda was noted for establishing the plays and spectacular assists that almost always merited an instant replay. Jess Mar Sabangan, Jhon Rey Sumido, Lord Casarejos, Erwin Duran, Von Chavez, Nikko Montelibano, BJ Zosa, RR De Leon and Jairold Flores complete this season’s UE Red Warriors lineup. In addition, the UE Community never failed to rally behind the boys as proven by the full-force red-andwhite attendees at the Warriors’ games. Regardless of the standing and of the outcome, the UE side would always be cheering the Warriors on despite the insurmountable lead posed by their every opponent, always all-out in the singing of the UE Hymn, even applauding the opponents as they sang their own hymns.
Support was also evident through social media, particularly through the UE Facebook and Twitter accounts. During games, individuals showed their support to the team, win or lose. It was not surprising to read comments such as “Kaya pa ‘yan” and “Bawi na lang next time” when game results were posted in such sites. The same can be said for online forums such as those of the UE Red Tribe and at PinoyExchange, where the UE faithful, student and alumni alike, would defend the team against detractors or bashers. They would also offer their own analyses of the teams’ strengths and weaknesses, suggestions and even their own scouting report of opposing teams in a bid to help the Warriors improve their status. The Warriors will definitely charge this season to experience as they try to claw their way out of their low-end standing this year. As the old adage goes, there is no other way to go but up.

Silangan COLLECTIVE STATEMENT OF UNIVERSITY OF THE EAST-MANILA STUDENTS ADDRESSING THE DAWN REGARDING THE DAW AND REQUESTING FOR A MORE COMPETITIVE AND RESPONSIBLE STUDENT PUBLICATION We, the undersigned, students of the University of the East, in acknowledgement of our right to have a student publication that encourages critical thinking, and promotes the development of our moral character, ethical values and personal discipline through responsible and constructive journalism, do hereby condemn the DAW, a spoof edition of the official student newspaper, the Dawn, issued on 09 November 2011, for its MALICIOUS and downright OFFENSIVE content that have insulted students, members of the faculty, employees, University officials, and the University as a Higher Education Institution itself.
2. Freedom of Expression not an excuse to violate the rights of others We uphold the right of every student to freedom of expression; however, this freedom comes with a responsibility. As stated in Section 3, Article IV of the 2001 Revised Constitution of the University of the East Studentry, the rights accorded to us should be exercised responsibly, constructively and with high regard as to the rights of others. Clearly, the DAW was used as an avenue to ridicule individuals to the point of being injurious to their reputation.
Furthermore, we condemn its editorial staff for CARELESSLY publishing the said edition and without regard to the rights of others. Ultimately, we are also issuing this statement to demand for a more competitive and responsible student publication that we truly deserve.
3. A great disrespect to UE; a great damage to our image The University of the East, our University, is a great institution built by great people with great aspirations. It has been the home to thousands of students who have come before us. It is not just a school for some, but their lifeblood. Many people have given their whole lives for this institution. As its students, we must lead in the promotion and protection of its name and glory. We stand up against the great disrespect of the DAW against UE, its symbols and officials. What sort of image will this bring outside the campus? This is not only detrimental to the image of the University but also to the image of each and every UE student and alumnus.
We condemn the DAW on the following grounds: 1. Inconsistent with the Campus Journalism Act RA 7079, otherwise known as the Campus Journalism Act of 1991, states that strengthening ethical values, encouraging critical and creative thinking, and developing moral character and personal discipline of the Filipino youth are the underlying objectives of campus journalism. We understand that the purpose of the DAW, as a spoof paper, is to entertain, but the Dawn should realize that they are still writing inside an academic institution wherein students have different levels of tolerance toward sensitive matters like human sexuality. Furthermore, the University also provides education to high school and elementary students. What would be their young minds’ response to this malicious and vulgar “spoof paper”? What values shall we impart to them?
OUR REQUEST The Dawn’s purpose as a student publication is to produce material that is relevant to the needs and interests of the students. Each UE student pays ₱50.00 every semester for this service. We strongly demand that the Dawn improve its overall quality and give justice to the expectations of the students. We demand for a competitive school newspaper that works with the highest ethical and professional standards. We demand excellent and responsible journalism on our campus. We demand what we deserve.
Signed this 11th day of November two thousand and eleven.
