Hello there! I’m Archana Sivaprakash, a student of Architecture, currently pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Manipal School of Architecture and Planning, Karnataka, India. I’m strongly of the belief that human experience is the truest measure of quality architecture. I’ve always been, and continue to be, fascinated by the capabilities of the tangibles and intangibles of the built environments to manipulate and shape user experiences and emotions. As a prospective architect, always inspired by spatial narratives and experiential architecture, I aspire to create designs that value the integrity of human experience to generate invigorating built environments. Through this portfolio, I present the design and decision-making skillset developed across the 4 years of my undergraduate training and seek opportunities to trade the same to further learn, refine and grow as an aspiring architect.

The muted and earthy tones that comprise the natural material and color palette of the space is complimented through the integration of the lush outdoor with the indoor spaces. These indoor courts not only serve as visual relief and a source of daylight, but also as space dividers.

This public hospital in Udupi adopts a holistic approach towards creating an adaptive healthcare environment that focuses on the user well-being through the principles of “Salutogenesis”, i.e., comprehensibility, meaningfulness and manageability, to craft a space that is mentally stimulating and inspires health, while sustaining a link to the roots of the users to avoid alienation. Site Location: Kalsanka-Ambagilu Road, Udupi, Karnataka Site Area: 11,000 sq. m

form development

While the mass is bifurcated into segments based on the parameters of functionality and user groups to enable the primary functions of a hospital with ease, the winged form coupled with the rhythmically repeating open courtyards serve as a source of much-needed positive distraction. Further, the introduction of the dynamic curves makes the structure more breathable and creates an air of informality and warmth.

Site Area: 11,000 sq. m Total Built-up Area: 14,369 sq. m

Repetition of the same layout across floors, visually connected through courtyards and buffer spaces enable easy visual cohesion. 15

Further, all waiting spaces overlook or open up into break spaces in the form of an open courtyard, which acts as a source of positive distraction and helps encourage a stress-free atmosphere.

With higher floors, the functions of spaces located on the floors become increasingly private, serving spaces like operation theatres, ICU, etc. that require increased seclusion and containment to maintain a sterile environment.

The simple linked pavilion layout followed with a central core corridor from which sub-spaces branch out, helps enhance the comprehension of space which in turn facilitates easy navigation.

Ample daylight and visual connectivity with the outdoors instils a sense of brightness and positivity in space, thereby creating an atmosphere that is uplifting and comforting, in which the users can thrive physically, mentally, and socially.

The design of this district public school in Bhatkal, Karnataka, catering to students of ages 617, borrows from the concepts of “Kinesthetics” to craft a space that attempts to take the academic proficiency of the students a step further by presenting them a friendly and welcoming ambience that incorporates learning through movement into schooling. Site Location: Ternamakki, Bhatkal, Karnataka Site Area: 4567 sq. m

Site Area: 4567 sq. m Total Built-up Area: 6593 sq. m

The existing block of secondary school on site has been maintained, with the design intervention blocks following the boundaries of the limited site to prioritize on opening up maximum area for free movement with the built form serving as a watchful closure. Further, pockets and voids in the mass facilitate natural ventilation and daylighting, while also doubling as interactive spaces.

This urban revitalization project focuses on KR Market, the vivid flower market located in the heart of Bangalore, a victim to improper planning strategies that pose a threat to not only its vibrant identity, but also the informal vending activity it supports. The design intervention thus attempts to bring out the vibrancy of the market into the foreground and impart a positive connotation to the existing negative perceptions of informal and unorganized street vending, thereby leading the market on a path to strengthening its resilience as an economic hub.

The intervention envisions KR Market as a resilient economic hub through inclusive planning and sustainable infrastructure development to create a convivial visitor experience; one that does away with the prevalent issues of Improper spatial planning resulting in unorganized street vending, further leading to the issues to hampering of movement, filthy vending conditions, and poor garbage disposal.

Blooming Bazaar: Reinvigorating KR Market This exercise in place-making derives major inspiration from the vibrant character of the market, deriving influences from the various tangible and intangible identifying elements associated with the space.

master plan

The intervention attempts to maintain the iconic and chaotic nature of the space, mainly the flexibility in spatial appropriation for vending, the vivid array of colors and smells, and the easy to navigate circulation spines, while organizing them through unified elements of design, thereby ultimately upholding the integrity of the identity of KR Market.

The proposed vending unit equally combines functionality with visual aesthetics. The colorful acrylic awning fabric roofing derives inspiration from the unruly tarp roofing currently in use, while proving as a more durable alternative, thereby refraining from disturbing the existing character of the space.

The roofing form is inspired by the existing permanent shell structure, as well as the blooming flowers, to strengthen the link to the unique identity of the market. Further, the bamboo roofing system with thatch cover promotes the local crafts and celebrates local materials and workmanship.

This interior redesign project targets a 130 sq. m apartment in Falnir, Mangalore. Being relatively small, this space that houses a family of four calls for a design intervention that is not overwhelming or overcrowded, to result in a space that is modern, stylistic, and bright, while remaining subtle, cozy and welcoming.

Hence the concept of a Japandi style of design was adopted to create a space that draws on the refined yet rustic minimalism of Japanese styles and balances it with the of coziness and homeliness of Scandinavian styles to create the perfect blend of function and form, focusing on clean lines, lots of contrast, bright spaces, and light colors.

The existing conflicting color palette and bulky furniture has been replaced with a bright, natural and neutral palette, inspired by Scandinavian styles; against which clean and sleek furniture forms inspired by Japanese styles are set. Further interest in space is created through limited color introduced through artworks, indoor plants, décor, and even the luminaires. The outcome is a more aesthetically pleasing ambience that achieves the same without compromising on the existing strengths of the space like the daylight and coziness; while also being mindful of the functionality.
