Foreword The Sensory Activity Book is created for the Parent Resource Library (Room) at THK EIPIC @ Tampines. This booklet is created based on sensory activities listed on the Parent Resource Library (E-Version). Sensory activities promote sensory processing, as it stimulates the child’s senses during the exploration with materials. Exploration can also be maximise as activities use majority edible products. These activities provides the opportunity for interaction with your child while having fun with the materials and at the same time, it caters to your child’s sensory needs. Gloopy Gloop

Ingredients: • • •

3 tablespoons of corn flour ¼ cup of water Food colouring

Instructions to prepare gloopy gloop: 1.

Add several drops of food colouring into water until desired colour is achieved (shown below).

Add half of the coloured water into the corn flour in child’s play tray or alternatively a plastic container (shown below).

Instructions for activity: 1.

Child is to wash their hands clean and wear an apron, if necessary.

2.

Mixing of the ingredients in the tray or plastic container should be done by child as part of the exploration.

3.

More coloured water should be added by the adult until a slimy consistency is achieved.

4.

After achieving the slimy consistency, allow child to explore with the gloopy gloop.

5.

Gloopy gloop is to be disposed at the end of the activity, as it will harden upon long exposure in open air.

Disclaimer: This activity is edible however, may stain hands due to the use of food colouring. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water to remove stains.


Jelly

Ingredients: • • •

1 sachet of agar-agar premix powder Water Food colouring (If agar-agar premix powder is colourless)

Instructions to prepare jelly: 1.

Add agar-agar premix powder to water (according to recommended recipe of specific brand)

2.

Warm mixture and continue stirring till boiled.

3.

Allow mixture to cool for 2 minutes before pouring into a large square mold (shown below).

4.

Chill till mixture hardens.

5.

Cut jelly into squares and place in child’s play tray or plastic container for activity, once jelly is ready.


Jelly

Materials needed for activity: •

Plastic fork and spoon (Optional)

Instructions for activity: 1.

Child is to wash their hands clean and wear an apron, if necessary.

2.

Allow child to explore with jelly using their bare hands or using forks and spoon.

3.

Child is to cut and crush jelly using their preferred method.

4.

Do not be alarmed if child eats the jelly during the activity as it is edible. However, it is recommended to deter child from eating the jelly as it will reduce maximum exploration.

5.

Jelly is to be disposed to avoid spreading of germs at the end of the activity. Jelly should be for one time use only. Disclaimer: This activity is edible.


Dough

Ingredients: • • • •

3 tablespoons of plain flour A pinch of salt ¼ cup of water Food colouring

Instructions to prepare dough: 1.

Add several drops of food colouring into water until desired colour is achieved (shown below).

2.

Add plain flour, salt, coloured water in a bowl and mix until a ball of dough is formed (shown below).

3.

Knead the dough for a minute to ensure consistency of the texture (shown below).

Rolling pin

Cookie cutters of various shapes

Instructions for activity: 1.

Child is to wash their hands clean and wear an apron, if necessary.

2.

Prepare the dough, rolling pin and cookie cutters and allow child to explore with the materials.

3.

Provide assistance to child when requested.

4.

Dough can be kept in an air-tight plastic bag at the end of the activity if it is not contaminated by other elements such as child’s saliva. If dough is contaminated, it is advice to be disposed to prevent spreading of germs.

Shaving Foam Art Ingredients: • • •

Shaving foam Food colouring Water

Instructions to prepare shaving foam art: 1.

Add several drops of food colouring into water until desired colour is achieved (shown below).

2.

Pour desired amount of shaving foam and several drops of coloured water in child’s play tray or alternatively a plastic container (shown below).

Paintbrush (Optional- for child with high sensitivity)

Instruction for activity: 1.

Child is to wash their hands clean and wear an apron, if necessary.

2.

Mixing of the ingredients in the tray or plastic container should be done by child as part of the exploration.

3.

Allow child to explore with the shaving foam art using their bare hands or using the paintbrush.

4.

Shaving foam art is to be disposed at the end of the activity,.

Puffy Paint

Ingredients: • • • •

2 tablespoons of plain flour 2 tablespoons of salt 2 tablespoons of water Food colouring

Tip: The ratio of ingredients (except food colouring) should always be 1:1:1.

Instructions to prepare puffy paint: 1.

Add several drops of food colouring into water until desired colour is achieved (shown below).

2.

Add plain flour, salt and coloured water In a bowl (shown below). Stir well.

Pictures for Art & Craft painting (Optional)

Paintbrush (Optional- for children with high sensitivity)

Instructions for activity: 1.

Child is to wash their hands clean and wear an apron, if necessary.

2.

Pour the puffy paint in child’s play tray or alternatively a plastic container.

3.

Allow child to explore with puffy paint using their bare hands or paintbrush.

4.

If pictures for Art & Craft painting are available, allow child to paint it using their preferred medium.

5.

Puffy paint is to be disposed at the end of the activity.

Sand

Ingredients: • • •

4 tablespoons of baking powder 1 tablespoon of water Food colouring

Instructions to prepare sand: 1.

Add several drops of food colouring into water until desired colour is achieved (shown below).

2.

Add baking powder and coloured water in a bowl. Stir well.


Sand

Materials needed for activity: •

Beach tools

Instructions for activity: 1.

Child is to wash their hands clean and wear an apron, if necessary.

2.

Pour the sand in child’s play tray or alternatively a plastic container.

3.

Allow child to explore with sand using bare hands and /or beach tools.

4.

Keep sand in an air-tight container at the end of the activity, if it is not contaminated by other elements such as child’s saliva. If sand is contaminated, it is advised to be disposed to prevent spreading of germs.

Soap Foam Bubbles Ingredients: • • • •

2 tablespoons of dish soap ½ cup of water Food colouring Mixer

Instructions to prepare soap foam bubbles: 1.

Add several drops of food colouring into water until desired colour is achieved (shown below).

2.

Add dish soap and coloured water in child’s play tray or alternatively a plastic container (shown below). Mix well.

3.

Use a mixer to form bubbles
