A STATE OF THE ART, SUSTAINABLE BUILDING

CREATING A NEW GALAPAGOS TORTOISE FACILITY

ZSL is known throughout the world’s zoological communities and conservation groups, having already built a new visitor centre and Monkey exhibit within the grade one Snowdon aviary, we were delighted to be tasked with creating a new facility for their Galapagos tortoise’s.

The Zoo were looking to rehouse their existing group of Galapagos tortoises to a new state of the art, highly sustainable building.

The original enclosure had been on site for a number of years, the Zoo were wanting to create an environment with the wow factor, using a building which mirrored the Zoo’s ethos of sustainability.

Fordingbridge, with over 55 years’ experience, are industry leaders in the field of sustainable buildings, ensuring complete traceability of our supply chain and using our own in-house teams of structural designers, manufacturers, and logistics specialists ensures we achieve the client’s brief. We aim to design and construct inspiring spaces for humans and animals alike by doing the simple things correctly, minimising the energy demand of our buildings, minimising wastage, and ensuring high levels of air tightness and insulation.

Fordingbridge were tasked with the concept drawings, structural calculations and producing working drawings, we then worked alongside the zoo’s appointed architect to obtain planning permission. We have worked previously with ZSL on projects, so our experience allowed us to work with maximum effectiveness. Building a relationship with the client allows us to have clear processes implemented from the start, helping make our projects, such as that with ZSL London Zoo, run more fluidly. Sustainable engineering is at Fordingbridges’ heart, the new Galapagos tortoise house building is flooded with natural light, the walls consist of insulated composite panels, helping to maximise the energy efficiency of the building through both winter and summer months. All of our techniques and applications work together to help achieve, if not exceed, the brief.

Following construction of the UK’s first Zero energy retail store for Costa with their Telford Unit, and a subsequent building in Swansea, we were delighted to be approached once again to deliver our third sustainable Eco- pod for the coffee giant.

Our custom facility in West Sussex allows us to pre-fabricate all structural elements of our buildings including beams, columns and bracings. We were also able to preassemble a substantial number of parts in the factory, this process not only reduces disruption to the client, but also allowed us as a business to work more efficiently, as a solid day of preassembly at our factory saves the work of 3 days on site. It is our experience that makes this possible, and of course the time saved reduces the impact on our client and their customers alike.

Fordingbridge consistently deliver successful solutions collaborating with Architects and specifiers. We have the knowledge, in-house expertise and understanding to enable inspired and durable designs. Our specialist design & build team are here to bring your next project to fruition.

TREX PROTECT

Today’s high-performance composite deck boards, like those from Trex, are warrantied to last for 25 years or longer. But what about the substructure material underneath? If the posts and beams that support the deck are made of wood, they are likely to deteriorate long before the decking warranty elapses. In fact, a recent survey of builders revealed that almost all wood substructures show signs of splitting, rotting or decay after just eight years. With Spring in sight, many will be thinking about getting out in the garden and prepping for the warmer weather. For some this will mean investing in shiny new decking or giving their existing deck some well needed care. Now, there is a simple and cost-effective solution to combatting the damaging effects of both Mother Nature and Father Time. Trex® Protect™ Joist and Beam Tape is a self-adhesive butyl tape designed to protect wooden joists and beams from moisture that can lead to rot and the loosening of deck screws and fasteners.
