ÂŤ Design or rehabilitate a market in an urban area in Africa Âť The goal of this competition is to encourage, stimulate and reward the creativity and inventiveness of the African talents. Moreover, the competition aims to give students and young professionals the opportunity to discover and assess architectural and technical possibilities. Each team leader should register his or her team on the following website www.afrikarchi.com/afrikarchinetwork.
After registering online, a number is given to each registered team. This number must be mentioned on all documents (boards and presentation text, CD, sealed envelope ...) as well as all mails. The names of the participants and the name of their school or company must not appear on the documents submitted to the jury, but only the number that has been given after registration. ! Only one number is given to each registered team, not each participant!
2 - THEME Theme : “ Design or rehabilitate a market in an urban area in Africa “. « Markets are truly dedicated spaces to help and observe and understand the kind of social, economical and urban processes going on in Africa. Some markets have become wide hubs, integrating various flows, at the same time providing stocks and redistributing foods and goods. Those different flows have a real impact on life in the city, both physically and socially. Dantokpa Market in Cotonou (Benin), almost 20 Ha wide, which is often compared to a mini-city, has its own security and cleaning offices, bus station, motels, restaurants, currency exchange offices and even a dedicated radio station broadcasting on FM band (Radio Tokpa)! ».
Francis Sessou, Architect
The choice of this topic is related to many issues that can be involved in such program in terms of environmental, health, flow and mobility, or the management of stocks issues. The project will be designed using all the technical, architectural and urban characteristics which must have such facilities. The market should take into account sustainable development and public interest, as well as the development of local materials issues.
3 - SITE Each team will select in its own city, region or country the site where the project is going to be inserted. The site must be located in an urban area, in Africa. The choice of the site should be explained and justified through written notes and photos showing the proposed structures. It is required to produce a note (1 page A4 minimum) to justify the choice of study site.

4 - PROGRAMME Design or rehabiliate a market in an urban area in Africa, as structuring facilities of an african district or city. The project will include spaces dedicated to the installation of barges, sidewalks for pedestrians and paths for vehicles, delivery areas and storage spaces. It should also be taken into account the issues of hygiene , safety, management and maintenance of roads and utility services (water inlets, electricity, sewage and water valves, waste ...). The challenges of sustainable development and renewable energies should also be taken into account. It should also be integrated social issues related to such space, including customs and practices of places according to temporality. It is possible to integrate a mixity of programs such as playgrounds, hosting studios, friendly spaces. The structure of the design and coatings could be made with any suitable material. However, special attention should be given to the use of local materials (clay or adobe bricks, stone, wood, natural fibers ... etc. . ) . The structural components of the project could be designed in a mixed proportion. It will then be up to each team to measure and justify the choice of its architectural and technical relevance.
